ABC Orders Superhero Dramedy Series NO ORDINARY FAMILY!!

Published at:  May 12, 2010 9:46:38 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

The Petrelli-driven “Heroes” may be done, but ABC has ordered to series a new project about a family of superheroes titled “No Ordinary Family,” according to Deadline Hollywood.

The series, from dramedy vet Greg Berlanti (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Jack & Bobby,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Brothers & Sisters”), represents ABC’s latest attempt to graft the dramedy of hits like “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy” to a sci-fi project like its current biggest scripted hit, “Lost.” Prior ABC sci-fi dramedies include “Defying Gravity” and “FlashForward.”

"Ordinary" stars Michael Chiklis (“The Commish,” “The Shield”), Julie Benz (“Angel,” “Dexter”), Autumn Reeser (“The OC,” “Human Target”), Romany Malco (“The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Weeds”), Kay Panabaker (“Summerland,” “CSI”) and Chistina Chang (“24,” “CSI Miami”).

ABC, which announces its fall schedule Tuesday, describes the series' "Fantastic Four"-ish premise:

The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim and Stephanie’s relationship lacked the spark it once had, and their family life now consists of balancing work and their two children; leaving little time for family bonding. During a family vacation set up by Jim in an attempt to reconnect, their plane crashes into the Amazon River. But this is where the fun starts for the Powells as they soon discover that something’s not quite right. Each of them now possesses unique and distinct super powers. But saving and savoring their family life will be equally important as they try to find purpose for their new power and embark on a journey to find out what defines and unifies them. The Powells are a totally relatable family that happens to be a little bit amazing.

Sounds like its more Chick TV, ugh

    by saen

That track record of shows is scary; but maybe Chiklis can carry this thing to something watchable without estrogen.

    Well, at least...

...Chiklis isn't double-dipping in the Marvel universe like Evans is...

Will Michael Chiklis be breaking out his Thing suit?

    by fiester

This sounds like a quick cancel waiting to happen. The creator/showrunners pedigree and past record gives zero confidence he can handle a sci-fi/comic book show.

That's actually not a bad cast, mostly

    by robram89

I hope they don't waste Chiklis and Benz on the shitty show this is almost certain to be.

    by skidmarkedundies

That explains the laughable storylines . . . IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE COMEDIC! Fail.

    FF is not a dramedy

    by donsfingerbangthreatlevel

There has never been anything even remotely funny on it. At least not intentionally

This is the best he could do?

    by darth sicilian

This was the best thing offered to Michael Chiklis after his great run on The Shield? I thought he was destined for better things. I hope I'm wrong but I can't see a show like this lasting long on ABC. The combination of the word "Dramedy" and Michael Chiklis scares me.

    another word for dramedy...

    by kaijuturtle

is SOAP. All ABC hour-long shows are glossy soaps. Scifi soaps, medical soaps, supernatural soaps, over-40 women soaps, gay fashion soaps, etc. Pathetic

I actually prefer FlashForward to V

    by oisin5199

Can't seem to get invested in any of the characters in V, but I do actually care about Benford, Olivia, Demetri, and Janis. I hope if it's done this season, it's a good ending. I'll check out this show, 'cause it's superpowers, it's Chiklis and it's Julie Benz, who I haven't seen since Angel, since I've never seen Dexter.

    The Powers have Super-Powells?

    by vikkimarsdale

See what I did there? Better title.

This is like the Fantastic Four if Reed and Sue were married, Ben and Johnny were their kids, none of their superpowers were actually dramatic or freaky and instead of a rocket ship their airplane was hit by incredibly low flying cosmic rays.

I like dramedies and I love the use of humor on Lost and Fringe, but there is very little to nothing funny about either FlashForward or V - that's the problem.

I think part of Herc's credibility problem comes from his weak attempts at jokes. Obviously F/F is not a dramedy. To say so if either a joke or it's stupid. and if it's not funny people aren't sure if it's a joke, and that just leaves the other thing.

At east this may take up the superhero show gap now that Heroes is teetering over the verge of cancellation.
