The new Inception trailer is here to make your mind melt!

Published at:  May 07, 2010 8:28:25 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. When I saw Iron Man 2 last night I only got trailers for the new Shrek and Abrams' Super 8 (apparently I'm only allowed "S" trailers), but I know a whole lot of you got to see this new Inception trailer. I had to wait, but now I can watch it over and over and over and over and over and over again.

The trailer has made the rounds, but let's embed Film School Rejects... why? Because it's the first place I went and I'm lazy.

Ah, how refreshing that feels. Giant budget dream imagery from one of our most interesting working filmmakers. No racist robots (I think), no dumbed down action scenes (I hope)... I'm so ready for this movie. Any time now...

I think they should have included his movie Memento in the credits since this has more in common with that movie than Dark Knight, at least in strangeness factor. But you know, whatever. I do think it's good that you can see so much in the trailers and read the plot and it still seems a mystery what this will actually be.

    by kafka07

It's a sci-fi movie based on a common idea. Dreams are something all of us have almost every night, and they're one of the most interesting aspect of the human condition: the subconscious mind. It has some of the same story elements as the films you named, ominus, and you can add Brainstorm to that list as well. To use today's special effects to portray dreams and have it made by a very proven filmmaker is mind-blowing.

and it's going to end with the revelation that there was a big moment when the bad guy or good guy thought everything was real and then it turned out to be a dream instead but he revealed or did something that "ruins" the real world for him, so he ends up going back and living in the dream. Or he traps the bad guy in a dream the bad guy thinks is real. Yawwwwwn.

Yeah, in here people bitch about everything, if we see a remake, or a sequel, we ask for original movies, and when we see original movies we bitch about how it resembles to X movie. If a movie is good, is good, be a sequel, a remake, or something new like this, but is extra special to see something original in this big a scale...

yeah, it's better to have original stuff than transformers 3 but the thing is I think that this movie is probably going to be just as typical as transformers 3 just in a different way. these kinds of movies, the mindfuck movies, are all the same. whether it's old stuff like matrix or thirteenth floor or stuff or new stuff like inception, it's always this whole thing of like don't trust what you think you know or see. then there is the shot where something big looks small or small looks big or something and then there's the shot of the hero in a desert scene with stuff poking out of the sand like a freightliner. ive ben here before and i didn't like it last time when it was eternal sunshine or brazil or any of that kind of mindfuck movie. i like to know what im pretending is happening is actually happening to the people who are pretending its actually happening to them.

Real geeking-out anticipation. Haven't had this feeling about a movie since right before Fellowship of the Ring. Funny thing, my Moms (who is nearing 60 but knows I dig the movies - something we can still talk to each other about) caught a commercial for this during something she watches (probably American Idol) and asked me what it was about during a phone call. It just looks different and exciting. Cool beans.

    Leonardo

    by funkylovemonkey

For the longest time I hated him. Pretty much after Titanic and he became the lame dream boy for tween girls because he was safe and good looking and had the illusion of being dangerous but really deep down he was sensitive and sweet and just wanted love... Absolutely hated him, avoided everything he was in.

But the Departed changed my mind. I realized I was being way too hard on him just because of that one movie.

Ironically they I felt the same way about Kate Winslett after Titanic, but I started to like her after I saw her in Extras. Brilliant.

Oh, and I can't wait for this freakin' movie. July is too far away. After Memento, The Prestige, and the Dark Knight, Nolan is going to have to really screw up for me to not give him a chance. And the first trailer was stunning when I saw it in theaters. This one ten times better. Can't wait to see where it goes.

    by bruce of all trades

i.e. if you die in the Matrix, you're dead in real life as well. What I do think it'll be is... if something either goes wrong while you've invaded someone else's subconscious (as in, die), you risk being turned into a human vegetable and going comatose for the rest of your life. That would be a much better take on it than "OH NOES! I DIED!"

Sure we dont know exactly who he's after or what the secrets they might have but the basic outline is in the trailer. They either A: wait for someone to sleep, or B: they put them to sleep. Then Leo's character is hooked up to them and he enters that persons dreams and the dreams- which he says people dont refuse as reality. These dreams are shaped to foece that person to give away the secret his team is after. Hence the name inception. Like interception.

I want the Riddler to have no onscreen presence and to be the split/alt personality of a cop/private eye who is investigating Batman. This cop/PI has no idea about his alt personality. But seems to have been driven by his desire to solve crime, acting as a comparrison to Bruce's known alt personality and detective skills. Tieing in with Batman being hunted and the PI ending up also hunting the Riddler. The PI being hired by the new crime Boss (The Penguin), played by Tom Hardy

Joseph Gordin-Levitt's indie movie run of the last 5 years has been f'n exceptional. Leonardo DiCaprio has been awesome in everything since the Blood Diamond/The Departed. Yes, I was even impressed with him in Revolutionary Road.

    by asimovlives

... i would find the hatred against him justified. But the truth of thematter is, like it or not, DiCaprio is a talented actor. And unlike others like Tom Cruise, he's not exclusively after the more pop bulshit movies. In fact, he has a career made more made of indie movies then popular blockbuster material. You can tell by his career that he's after more then just getting rich fast from populist tripe (à lá Tom Cruise). DiCaprio strikes me as this type of actors who want to be proud of his career in their old age.Yeah, the guy won the genetic lotary and was blessed with killer looks the type thatmake women faint in his presence. And he seems to be resistent to aging. And it's too bad that you once caught your girlfriend marturbating in the shower or on her sleep moaning DeCaprio's name during the whole Titanic madness. That was 13 years ago, get over it. The guy is a very good actor, deal with it.

    Gordak, music

    by starlesswinter7

I'm sorry, but film scores make up my primary listening experience. I think I know where something is from when I hear it, and the music in this trailer could be ripped straight from any Zimmer-esque, tough, masculine score with those stupid staccato minor-thirds. They're everywhere in scores these days. Awful. TDK was practically 4/4 all throughout. Where's the complexity and creativity?

    The plot...

    by umbral_shadow_

Leo's character is required to steal ideas but for his last job he is asked to PLANT an idea into someone's mind - known as inception - which is considered impossible. Of course there will be a twist(s), but it won't be the whole thing is something Leo has dreamed up - that's far too obvious now, although it would have worked like a dream (pun intended) twenty or thirty years ago. And Ominus you have been fucking trolling, don't try to deny it. I expect to see you nitpicking this film as more details arise. I don't know what you have against Nolan's work but no one likes or tolerates such an ugly troll. Go stick your head up JJ abrams hairy ass and give him a prostrate massage with your tongue.

    by starlesswinter7

Does anyone hear even like music that's not all-out badass, masculine stuff with power chords? I'm not trying to be judgemental; it's a serious question. Seems like all anyone likes is Zimmer these days. His last great score was POTC3 because it was actually melodic and featured interesting instrumentation and lots of themes, not this electric guitar/synthesized crap.

Looks like Hollywood has found a new writer to ripoff -- Alfred Bester, The Demolished Man to be exact. Look, I'm not a Nolan hater, but as other posters have noted this movie seems "derived" from a number of sources. Which is okay -- if one must steal, steal from the best. In truth, I hope this works. I even hope that at some point Hollywood will actually attempt Bester's masterworks in their entirety, instead of bits and pieces of them.

As for Nolan's directing when it comes to action

    by bruce of all trades

That complaint is just retarded. He slipped up a bit in Batman Begins, mostly because he tried to do the whole "from the criminal's point of view" stuff, but showed genuine talent in directing the tumbler chase sequence. In TDK, the action is fine, just not extravagant, stylized and over the top like you'd see in a Spider-Man or Blade movie. He prefers a more effective type of action rather than just cool looking. Frankly, I'm fine with that, even though I understand why others wouldn't be. That said, the man isn't a bad action director. His action scenes just aren't made to be "mega-super-ultra-cool looking", like a Wachowskis or Zack Snyder movie.

Does that make you half an idiot? The main plot is not about Leo's character stealing an idea from someone's dreams. Rather he usually steals ideas, but in this case is hired to plant an idea into someone's dreams. Hence the name Inception, as in "starting point".

The idea of implanting ideas in people's minds isn't exactly new. Now, we have yet to see how Nolan uses that idea, but you can find that concept in something as mainstream as Harry Potter - the idea of modifying people's memories (by magic, though, in HP) to think they've done or experienced something.

Besides making crazy intricate music for a action crime story would take away from the visual element, this isn't fantasia where ur making visuals to music you are making music to support the visual story. That's why he's a film score artist and not a classical composer ect. Movie looks badass!!

Chris Nolan = What M.N. Shyamalan wishes to be, but never came c

    by --- emperor ---

Chris Nolan. Now that's a director with an original and intelligent spark in his bones. Both qualities, that Shyamalan thinks he has, but soaringly lacks. I'm not even a huge Nolan fan, but no doubts as to his abilities as a creative and original thinker. Nolan understands that shitting out another BULLSHIT 3D film just for the sake of it, is simply a corruption of one's own soul. Sure, the guy wants to make money, but he doesn't want to cheat in the process of making that money. The guy can sleep at night, knowing he's made money off quality work, not fucking rubbish. And as for the punjab curry stinking rat known as Shyamalan, well, that man's entire soul fizzled away with the 6th sense; and what was left of it, manifested in "Unbreakable", and it completely vanished by the ending (which is why that film started off promisingly and ended horrendously).

Well done to film makers like Nolan, who continue to produce quality work, without boring an audience or flopping at the box office. I wish him continued success.

For those who think I am racist: Yes I am, and so are you.

    by --- emperor ---

Everybody is racist. Everybody is sexist. To state otherwise, is being an ignorant, pretentious imbecile. All humans make decisions based on preconceptions and past experiences.

So, if I call somebody a punjab stinking rat, it means I have had a bad experience with those stinking cunts in the past. In fact, there are noisy, stinking punjabs living next door to me. Their stink is insufferable.

Does this mean that all punjabs are stinking, filthy, uncivilized noisy dogs? No. But many of them are. Does this mean Shyamalan is? Perhaps. Perhaps not. The bottom line is, I don't like the guy, and thus, I use my dislike of him to reference the culture that produced him.

Does that make it logical or rational? Yes and no. My outburst does have a rational basis. But humans do not think and act logically, even when they try to.
The bottom line is, if you're going to label me some bullshit buzzword like "racist", you're better off spending your time identifying the root causes of sentiments such as these, rather than throwing around a buzzword for the mere purpose of winning a talkback pissing contest, or congratulating yourself for NOT being "racist" (note: you ARE racist anyway, shithead).

I still don't get why Nolan is so revered

    by countryboy

Sure he's a skillful director, like plenty of others; but I'm at a loss to understand his lofty reputation. MEMEMTO was great. PRESTIGE was much slower and duller, and had a ludicrous ending. (SPOILER! The idea that you could, in the 1800's, invent a machine that would instantly create wholly conscious, functioning copies of humans is just idiotic.) Does anyone even remember INSOMNIA? BATMAN BEGINS had some of the most inept action directing I've ever seen. And without Ledger, DARK KNIGHT would have been just an average movie. There were no jaw-dropping set pieces (the truck chase was fine, but nothing new), no terrific dialogue (I can't recall a single thing Batman said), the plot was muddy; and it actually employed a non-action climax, where basically everyone stands around and talks philosophy. Seriously, why is it considered a masterpiece? I didn't hate the movie by any means; but concretely, what's so great about it? And what's so great about Nolan?

Thus, following your logic, everybody, including you, must necessarily be a twat, which in turn only undermines your 'argument' and highlights my point: you're an idiot. Learn to think. To suggest the two forms of bias are in any way comparable Two forms of bias? I'd like to see someone like Nolan just make a regular movie... like Dog Day Afternoon. All the fireworks in the world don't get me as pumped as that scene where he's yelling at his wife on the phone... cause it feels so real I feel as though I'm eavesdropping. I LOVE science fiction and I do think we're in a mini-renaissance of great sci-fi movies, but I have to wonder sometimes whether or not these guys would be able to handle a movie like Taxi Driver or Cuckoo's Nest, where regular people and all their attendant problems, failures, small triumphs, and inevitable frailty take center stage. Don't get me wrong, I don't mean some weepie indie, I mean something 'realistic' with a strong central performance where the guy doesn't wear clown make-up and taunt a man dressed as a bat. Please don't take this the wrong way, I'd just like to see them tackle something like that is all.

    CountryBoy its simple

    by ominus

From the fanboys point of view,Nolan managed to revive and turn a favorite among the fanboys,superho-hero comic character and the universe he inhabits, and turn those into a successful movie franchise which is not only very faithful to the dark roots of the character, but also it is serious, mature and very realistic.
Especially with TDK another thing also happened: Its universal critical acclaim from the professional movie critic , its phenomenal success in the BO and Ledger's Joker being oscar awarded, made the fanboys to think of the movie that finally got to the league of the great ones, that it was so good that it could be compared to the classics like Godfather or Heat (i am not joking,TDK was no1 in imdb during its release and fanboys in the imdb forums indeed compare it with Godfather)
And that thing made the fanboys to think that TDK was the ONE movie which broke the barrier between the 'underrated' and isolated comic super-hero movie genre and the rest of the serious, mature and artistic cinema.Fanboys believed that finally not only it was proved that a super-hero movie can be serious and mature and realistic and most importantly a brilliant work of art ,but also this fact was finally acknowledged and acclaimed by the rest of the world which was never into comics.
For the faboys the world which always thought that comics were not serious, they were only for kids, for entertainment, finally started embracing the super-hero genre as something more than just kiddie stuff. And that makes the fanboys really happy because they dont feel anymore isolated from the rest of the world. The things they love so much like the super-hero comics have finally come into the attention of the other people. The fanboys stopped feeling as geeks, nerds, freaks, weird people who dreamed everyday how to become super-heroes in the real world.
Everyone was talking about TDK which means everybody was talking about super-hero comics, which means nobody was ignoring the comics as something not worthy anymore.
IMHO thats what Nolan has achieved with TDK,well in the mind of the fanboys and thats why they worship him so much.
and frankly thats why i cant wait for Batman 3,because i am very interested to see what will happen then.you see Nolan doesnt have Ledger anymore with him and i would like to know how the whole situation will develop.

Do YOU know what bias means?
"Being biased has no causal/logical relationship with decision making based on preconceived notions."
Bias is not ignorance. Bias is a filter created by your experiences - a lens through which decision making is informed. It is generally unconscious - which is quite separate from ignorance. Just because you lack the self-awareness to appreciate that your decisions are informed by all kinds of biases does not mean everyone else is.
    "Being racist/sexist is being discerning."
You're joking, right? Racism and sexism are the opposite of discerning. They are lazy thought processes, by which people are judged and labeled according to a broad set of stereotypes. Do you think calling an Indian person a "punjab curry stinking rat" shows any level of discernment whatsoever? Really?
Swallowing a thesaurus and spitting out big words does not make you smart or insightful. And if me calling you a twat reflects some psychological dependency, then what do you suppose calling someone a
"punjab curry stinking rat" reflects upon you?
I'll tell you one thing - it's not indicative of a well-adjusted, emotionally intelligent adult.
Most people I know would say that it suggests a fair degree of twattery. But I must admit, I am dazzled by your amazing thinkosity, and will surely endeavour to model my thinkering on you in the future. Thank you for the lesson on what it means to be a great thinker. Avatar stands at its own, like Star Wars stands at its own.thats a fact unless you think that its whole universe has been stolen intact from somewhere else.influenced yes but stolen no.so even by that criteria,it remains an original movie.
and there lies the whole point: that this criteria was not taken into consideration when haters were attacking only the influences of Avatar but never focused on the final product of those influences.
But now with Inception, which already from its trailers seems to have been heavily influenced from other works, the Nolan supporters suddenly remembered that art is a product of personal vision and external influences and that you should only judge the final artwork by where it stands by its own.and they only remembered this fact now because they want to use it as the main arguments against the backlash from the Nolan haters who will criticize him that his work is not original but a ripoff.
as you can the hypocrisy is not about what criteria and how you use it to judge a film, but when you use it and when you dont use it.
I am sure even from now that Nolan has created his own personal universe with Inception, just like he did with Batman, but despite how the movie will turn out,the thing is that people will use arguments to defend the movie which in retrospect with Avatar, they kept deliberately denying. In other words they are using double standards which makes them hypocrites.
And i will laugh and troll with them when Inception comes out because of that.

    Happyfat73: Forget thinking. You're a dumbass.

    by --- emperor ---

It took you the best of 2 hours to come up with that asinine response?

Firstly, I didn't specifically state that Bias is equal to ignorance. You really cannot comprehend anything can you? This is also why you try to use the good old "swallowed the thesaurus" mantra to somehow suggest that I am a pseudo-intellectual, when it in fact is you, who is the psuedo-academic. I specifically wrote "being biased is being ignorant". This does not necessarily imply that bias = ignorance. Further below, I wrote: "ignorance creates bias, pretentiousness follows from bias to identify with one's psychological identification within society, and imbecility is the product of a human being, who attempts and fails to combine the two in order to form an invalid argument..." Can you read (and more importantly, understand)? Evidently not. You're not much of a thinker, which is why you are so pathetic at sarcasm. "You're joking, right? Racism and sexism are the opposite of discerning. They are lazy thought processes, by which people are judged and labeled according to a broad set of stereotypes. Do you think calling an Indian person a "punjab curry stinking rat" shows any level of discernment whatsoever? Really? " Boy, are you an idiot. Firstly, what you have not established what racism/sexism is, which is why you cannot follow on with the rest of your presuppositions. You have not defined anything in your "argument" (speak brain farts), which is why you have none. You didn't even understand my original post, but you continue meandering about "stereotypes"...another buzzword you farted out of your dumb ass. When I stated that you can't think, that certainly wasn't an overstatement. You really cannot do much at all, can you? Everything you type is just a bunch of scribble and brain fartery. There's no content, no structure, no logic in your driveling. In other words, you have nothing to say, besides vent your disapproval of my original post. You're just being a dumb-ass granny, sitting there yapping away at how furious you are at my remarks. Good for you, idiot. I already addressed your problems hours ago: Nobody cares if a fly shat on your tongue and left a bitter aftertaste in your mouth to propagate your banalities. If this is too tough for you to understand, just shut the fuck up. "Swallowing a thesaurus and spitting out big words does not make you smart or insightful." I agree with you there. However, what's your point, doofus? Oh, I forgot, you don't have one. I see. Well, you might as well insert some other random gibberish mid-way through your argument, such as "shitting out brown and black forms of diarrhea doesn't make you an artist". Oh. Okay. Thanks for that. "But I must admit, I am dazzled by your amazing thinkosity, and will surely endeavour to model my thinkering on you in the future. Thank you for the lesson on what it means to be a great thinker. I think I'm learning to think." Dude, you need to work on the sarcasm. In order to do that, you need to have a point. See, when a smart/witty writer is sarcastic, they specifically have a point to articulate. There's no point in your mindless drivel, because there's no content or argument. Learn to think, and then try to re-organize your brain farts into something that's worth discussing. Okay, monkey? Until then, just fuck off, idiot.

    Deanmail; Answer to your question.

    by --- emperor ---

I believe I already answered your question above, whilst responding to Happyfat73, and I quote: "So, if I call somebody a punjab stinking rat, it means I have had a bad experience with those stinking cunts in the past.

So, yeah, my opinion that the majority of the geekry have fallen in lust by the hype of shitty directors is always justified whenever there's a talkback related to any of those two untalented hacks. That there has been positive reactions to Nolan's latest is very satisftying, yes, but it hardly compensates from the massive ass kissing that goes around here regarding mega-hack El Abramanito. The scales still tilt pretty heavily on the side of wrong.

Ominus the problem with Avatars lack of originality

    by slappy jones

isn't just that the story was borrowed from other stories it was that you could guess every single plot point from within the first five minutes. you can have a unoriginal story idea and tell it in a interesting way but cameron was so focussed on all his new fancy toys that he just went through the motions in terms of putting the actual story to together in a way that wasn't predictable every single step of the way.

Why your lack of enthusiasm about INCEPTION? From what i know of you, i would had expected otherwise, i would expect you in the frontlines with a machinegun mowing down the premature-haters. Listen, if alltr his attitude is because someone started some comparison between INCEPTION and AVATAR, just forget it. i mena, how can we even begin gto compare both? Nobody has seen INCEPTION to begin with, so a possible comparison is absurd to say the least. As for the subject of inspiration, previously presented themes and derivativeness, allow me to use a metaphor created by online critic Vern in his justification for enjoying some derivative movies: he equates certain genre movies who uses the recognizable tropes of the genre as if they are blues ongs and musics. Many of them play the sme notes and familiar phrases, but the difference is the interpretation. A bad player will make a poor show of the theme, but a very good player will find a fresh way to play the song again and feel fresh and as if he has owned it from the start. Same thing can be said to movies. INCEPTION certainly has tropes that you can find in any other movie or SF literature. The real question is how they are presented, and that's the real issue. and from what i ahve seen from the brillant trailers, looks like Nolan and his filmmaker partners are making a one hell of a cover. Can't hardly wait. And always remember: two goods do not one bad make.

When i saw AVATAR (which i really liked, make no mistake), i just wished that soembody could had made a movie version of Ursula K. LeGuinn's THE WORD FOR WORLD IS FOREST and be released in the theaters as well as AVATAR. The same way when in 1997/1998 we got two WWII movies by very well acknowledged filmmakers, Spielberg's SAVING PRIVATE RYAN and Terrence Malick's THE THIN RED LINE. If AVATAR is SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, then THE WORD FOR WORLD IS FOREST would be it's THE THIN RED LINE. The two would show the different ways to present a similiar WWII story but with such different presentations and thematic intentions and artistic vision. Whenever i read THE WORD FOR WORLD IS FOREST, Malick's THE THIN RED LINE always pop to my head as the perfect presentation for that story.I bring up THE WORD FOR WORLD IS FOREST because Cameron's AVATAR shares a lot of elements, them and plot points from the LeGuinn's classic. To have seen a more poetic interpretion of a story similiar to AVATAR's and contyrat it to the laters more classic Hollywood Blocxkbuster Epic style would had been lots of fun.

NOW THAT'S A TASTY ASS TRAILER

    by bringingsexyback

It's both strange, wonderful and exciting to see Tom Hansen in this movie. Maybe the events take place in Summer's mind? Let's explore this.

In (500) Days, Tom was an aspiring architect. It was Summer who moved him to shed his fears and pursue that dream. We saw Tom drawing buildings and cityscapes.

Here, we see buildings and the cityscape bending. Coincidence? Hardly!

Clearly Nolan is exploring the Summerverse, literally bringing us into Tom's mind during his depression after breaking up with Summer. This is without a doubt Nolan's most brilliant work yet. Absolutely inspired.

I suspect the movie will end with Tom waking up and bouncing a tennis ball. I can't fucking wait to see this.

    by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave

I have no doubts this film will be great - the trailer looks terrific - but original it is not. And the Dark Knight fanboys would do well to learn that, instead of jumping through hoops to differentiate this movie from Avatar and claim its 'superiority'.

In any case, Ominus, know that morons like Slappyjones represent the last vestiges of the rampant Avatar haters, and that he thoroughly had his ass handed to him by Ace of Wands in another thread. Your ministry is wasted there, my friend. Also, that clown shoes HalfBreedQueen, who bizarrely thinks Avatar is a remake of 'Disney's' (as if!) Pocahontas, when it doesn't even follow the exact plot of that tale. Sorry, buddy, Cameron was influenced by golden-age sci fi literature and countless cinematic and literary sources, not Disney cartoons. He couldn’t possibly have ‘re-made’ them all, could he?

Inception, as has been stated above, is a greatest hits mash-up of The Matrix, Philip K. Dick, Dark City, The Thirteenth Floor, Paprika, Total Recall, and countless others. Hell, using others’ warped logic, it is almost a re-make of these things. This doesn’t concern me, because any person of intelligence is aware that all works of art are derivative in some sense – they aren’t created in a vacuum. But you put them together in combinations, with specifics, novel presentation, and the director’s own thematic concerns, and you get something that appears ‘fresh’. Cameron did this – Nolan will, too. The types of geeks selectively crying foul regarding the red herring of ‘originality’ should get educated as to where the antecedents of all these ideas came from and realize it is a futile and irrelevant effort to do so. Hell, most of these clowns think ‘The Matrix’ is an original film. They are exposing there own ignorance. If you think something is ‘original’ then it is simply a matter of you not being knowledgeable enough to know where the source came from, or what the cinematic, art or literary antecedents of these ideas actually were. Every broad brush stroke has already been painted.

Also, as I specifically stated earlier, THE DARK KNIGHT fanboys because, make no mistake, many of these geeks are riding Nolan's jock because of that one movie - which is not even his best. TDK is a very good movie – nay, even great at times – but absurdly elevated among the juvenile geeks. It is no Godfather or Kubrick rival, not even close. These types are not Nolan fans; they are bandwagoneers. They probably didn't even know who Nolan was prior to Batman Begins, and some haven't even seen his debut feature, ‘Following’ (one of his best), or are even aware it exists. But comic books - wow, those fools sure have heard of those!

    by longjohnny99

will be Leo realizing he is the subject of the inception, but I don't think that will happen simply because that would put the movie a little too close to Shutter Island territory, at least if they held to the book; I have not seen the film, but I don't see why they would need to change any of the twist at the end of that one. That said, no matter what else you think about DiCaprio, he does seem to pay attention to the films he picks. It would be pretty dumb to agree to two films with the same basic endings, especially when they are coming out only a few months apart. But, we also know of his desire to work with certain directors...maybe that was more of a deciding factor than the storyline. Or maybe the "self-created fantasy" theme is really intersting to Leo. Either way, I hope Inception has a bit more to offer for an ending because it looks to be pretty entertaining.

Knowing this is from Chistopher Nolan, one thing i know for sure: this movie will be interesting and it will has it's own voice. If it will play from well know tropes, that's what's remain to known. And evne if it does, the real issue will be how well they will be played. Again, i bring Vern's analogy about music players of blues: they can play again a well know music track, but a good artist knows how to put his own personal style and artistic vision and make it feel like it's new. That's my hopes for INCEPTION. Chances are, i already know many or all of the tropes in INCEPTION due to my SF readings and movies from that genre i watched. but i'm still optimistic, which is unusual for me about most new movies. In Nolan I Trust.

talking about "The Matrix" isn't original. This is the biggest problem. We have these apologists saying "nothing's original, even the stuff you think is classic, so stop looking for originality."It's the biggest piece of hogwash ever. Yes, it's very rare to invent a whole new genre and do something 100% that has never been seen before. Most people build on existing foundations of ideas, and I think that's the great way to go.HOWEVER, when you're doing that, you are SUPPOSED to put your own original twist to it. Take the genre in a direction that hasn't been done, and THE MATRIX did that. Period. No other movie before the matrix combined martial arts, simulated world, religion, etc into ONE film. So don't tell me it's 'unoriginal' because that is pure bullshit. It is highly original, and that's why the movie has endured as a classic. The problem with Avatar is that it is a movie full of cliches. When you watch the movie, you know beforehand what the characters will probably say and how the scene will play out, and obviously how it will end.So yes, everyone is inspired from a source but when you start LEANING and heavily BORROWING from another source, then you are driving towards clicheville, and that shit is annoying to watch.

    by sirbiatchreturns

not amazing, but definitely a breath of fresh air. I hope it's not a retread of old ideas executed better (e.g. The Matrix, Dark City, etc) but adds something interesting on its own.and so far, it's hard to tell which way it'll go.

SirBiatchReturns, cliches? Or solid dramatic constructs?

    by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave

The Matrix is full of 'cliches', my friend, as many as Avatar, and the plot was just as predictable. What left turns did that plot take, perchance? Anyone with a knowledge of basic screenwriting and story construction could see where that thing was going. A classic three act structure of reveal, expositional downtime, and action-filled third act, where Neo predictably had to rescue his mentor. Ditto, for the combining of elements into a supposed 'never-before-seen' hodgepodge. How exactly does Avatar not qualify for this, also? Where had you seen the classic 'going native' story combined with the sci-fi staple of surrogate bodies before this (the two actually combining to give a simple but interesting twist on these classic tales), combined with visual imagery straight out of classic sci-fi book covers and art, and to that level of versimilitude? You hadn't.As for the predictability of plot, mere plot mechanics are irrelevant to emotional engagement and deeper ideas of philosophy and metaphor. Even Inception will not buck from the tropes of narrative particularly radically; many here have already likely predicted the 'twist' ending. No matter - I don't look to the pedantics of plot mechanics for engagement in movies, otherwise I would seldom be satisfied.

"so far, it's hard to tell which way it'll go"That's a very rational position you got there, and I admire that. As for me, and given i make no secret of my enthusiasm and good hopes for this movie, this comes down to the fact it's directed by a filmmaker who so far has yet to disapoint me. In fact, he has awed me with each new movie. Thus, i cna't help but be optimistic. Sure, it call all be hype and nothing else. There's always that possibility. This could be a failure of epic porpostions. It's not out of the realm of possibilities. i know that. Even in my enthusiasm, i know that. Even when i'm enthusiastic about a movie, there's always something of my usual spetical nature that never turns off. But i'm quite optimistic about this movie. It's not too often this happens. Yup, you can say i'm savouring a rare oprtunity. The trick will be to avoid falling victim of the hype. And i'm sure some will think i'm already that. Tricky business this difference between being optimistic and hyped.

I came to the conclusion that there'sa difference between tropes and cliches. Tropes are dramatic elements which we can see repeated tiem and again. and many times we call them cliches. But i think cliché as more to do with the executuion of those tropes. If they are well executed, it's as if we are seeingthem anew. If executed badly, it's the same old tired cliché. You get my meaning? I don't think we should criticise a movie for using well known tropes, only if they are badly executed. And in THE MATRIX, all those tropes are very well executed. That movie is still a great movie, regardless of what people think of the sequels. As for AVATAR, the probpem with that movie is not the tropes it uses to tell it's tale, but the simplifications it sometimes falls into, it's manichaeism, and the forced heavy handed way it deals it's dramamtic hand, like, how unsubtle and blunt the Na'vis were made unambigiously sympathetic and flawlessly angelic, my personal biggest gripe against that movie, by the way.

you fuckers do is search for themes similar to prior movies. I see Dark City, The Matrix, Dreamscape..etc. No movie is 100% original. If it's been written and filmed from people of planet Earth then it's going to have the same structures, moods, language, expressions, tones, melodies, techniques, dialogue, F/X, story lines..etc. Get it? It's impossible not to have something from another film.

All that matters is how it is executed. Does it work as a good story and movie? I praise Nolan big time for his movie choices.

Nolan isn't going to show everything in the trailer. He wants to keep it secret. I bet the studio pressured him to show what we've seen so far. Nolan probably would prefer a black screen only saying:

"I'm Christopher Nolan, my new movie is called Inception. Retards not aloud! Because you won't get it anyways, besides, all you are going to do is mumble assholery like I see Dark City, The Matrix, Dreamscape in this. Avatar fucked your eye sockets, this will pile drive your brain."

in a movie industry that seems to thrive on cliche

    by sirbiatchreturns

nobody really knows what the word means anymore.Turd, you can't possibly think that "A classic three act structure of reveal, expositional downtime, and action-filled third act, where Neo predictably had to rescue his mentor" is a cliche. That, as Asimov rightly pointed out, are some of the CONVENTIONS of the action genre.are you really going to argue that the 3 act structure is cliche? makes no sense.what would be cliche is if protagonist shows up to rescue mentor in a helicopter, and we see this OVER AND OVER again.Again, as Asimov pointed out, cliches are apparent in the execution of a story, not in the story itself.all stories have practically been told from time. This is what makes stories powerful. Read Robert McKee's "Story" and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.e.g. the story of a little boy becoming great is a TROPE. It's been told a BILLION times, and that's what makes it great. However, HOW he becomes great will (and has to) keep changing, or else we get stuck in clicheville.

BUMLOVE: You make an interesting point.

    by --- emperor ---

" I like how Emperor tries to intellectualize his racism

It's an old lawyer's trick....talk long enough and throw out enough boring and confused arguments and eventually the person you're arguing might either give up or agree with you. Blur the truth with a flurry of nonsensical words...many jurors are quite taken by that sort of thing....they find it hypnotic. "

You raise a good and interesting point, and I certainly don't disagree that lawyers like to hypnotize the ignorant and simple-minded masses. However, is that what I was really doing? I openly claim that I am racist, but so is everybody else. Everybody is racist and sexist, by the simple reason that (as previously stated) we all base our decision making on preconceptions, be they true or false or something in between (if you believe in the laws of quantum mechanics).
Of course one can always be vulgar about it, like I was. Yes, I am a vulgar and angry man sometimes, who is also racist and sexist. So what? There are certain races, based on past experiences, that I am more partial to than others. Based on the dynamics between male and female, of course I am going to treat a female differently to a male. If I, however, hate females or hate blacks in general (which I don't by the way), does that make me any more RACIST or SEXIST (which is what Happyfat73 was arguing)? The answer is an emphatic NO. And that's the point I tried to make. My point was, being vulgar and hateful about one's natural racism/sexism simply makes a person just that: vulgar and Hateful. Calling this person racist/sexist simply to adopt the holier than thou attitude on a movie forum, is just pathetic. The fact of the matter is, most people just in our society are angry, and using demeaning words does not make one any more or less racist, but it does make one more or less angry/vulgar. When we use this type of language, we articulate our emotions and thoughts more effectively. Even a guy who's lived in the "hood" all his life, using "nigger" every 5th word, simply reflects on his own past and present upbringing based on a particular environment. Sometimes when I see Oprah on, for example, on TV, when I am flicking through channels, I just say "fuck off nigger." It's my way of venting my anger via the knowledge that the terminology is considered offensive. If Oprah were white, I would simply say "fuck off you worthless trashy slut." The point is, this does not imply I have a general hatred for blacks. I don't. If I did, I'd tell you, don't worry. Does it mean I am a vulgar/angry man? Absolutely. Ironically, by continually communicating our disdain and objections to what we subjectively perceive as "racism/sexism", were are simply propagating and institutionalizing it further. In our present world, it's impossible NOT to be racist/sexist. These objectionable terms and sentiments will end, however, once all humans relinquish their hatred for each other and begin rebuilding the world efficiently. I can honestly state, that I do not have a hatred for a particular race or gender in general. However, I can also honestly state, that I do have a hatred for humans in general. I hate how incompetently and inefficiently the world is run, and most importantly, I hate how absolutely nothing is being done about it, because the people that are 'elected' have no fucking idea. Now, I have certainly gone off on a tangent, but the bottom line is, racism and sexism (some more extreme forms thereof than others), will NEVER end, until people pull their heads of their asses and start addressing the root causes of racism/sexism, and indeed the broader world in general, which I won't get into right now. Until then, fuck all honkeys, dune coons, niggers, chinks, wogs, punjabs, pakis, border jumpers, spics etc. as well as Males and Females equally. I have a hatred for human stupidity in general, which basically means humanity in general. If I were an alien, (which I probably am), I'd be the first to destroy humanity. And that's all folks.

    Happyfat73: What I really need

    by --- emperor ---

What I really need, is to wake up in the morning, knowing that this planet is progressing somewhere -- anywhere. Anywhere but where it's heading right now -- which is nowhere. Once I start having confidence in the human race, I'll be less hateful. What's this got to do with movies or particular directors, you might ask? Well, the reason why so much utter shit is being shoveled into our mouths every day by so many people (including film directors), because the profit motive will always come before artistic and intellectual merit. Always, with any business. It's the nature of the monetary system. if you deny this, you're either delusional/lying and/or you're a poor business man. If cinemagoers rewarded true ability and profundity over mind-numbing idiocy, then we all would be blessed with a far higher quality of movies. It suddenly would become crucial for hollywood to incorporate high quality work into its business model. One company, I believe, has already done this: Pixar. It's not in Pixar's interest to release a dud. But more people (and eventually humans in general), should incorporate quality and depth into all their actions. For every Chris Nolan, there are hundreds or thousands of Mike Bays (yes I know Mike Bay himself is the cream of the adhd-hack crop). Ultimately, we are all (more or less) movie fans on these forums just uttering our support or disdain for particular film makers. This whole racist debacle started because I can't stand Shyamalan. Others can't stand Mike Bay. Some of your perhaps don't get Chris Nolan's success/reverence. But ultimately, our real disdain should be the entire business model that Hollywood employs: Profits first, all else, last. People like Shyamalan and in particular Bay continue to waste celluloid and resources on utter meaningless shit, and the only thing that's changed now, is that we can behold this shit in 3D. That's the big change now. How much longer are we going to denigrate our own culture and intelligence with expensive garbage produced by all sorts of different businesses, including the film industry? The long-term solution is: change from a monetary based system into an efficiency/progress based system. I.e., the 'profit' would not be purchasing power, but progress/efficiency. The short term solution is simple: Get a good broad band plan, and if you really have to watch Mr Bay's latest explosion fuckfest, just download it and watch it on your plasma tv. That way, you got to masturbate over a few explosions, and Mike Bay is either run out of business, or forced to get a fucking clue (unlikely). The moral of the story: Keep downloading, until there's something actually worth seeing in the cinema. That's the true power of 'democracy'.

    by happyfat73

Transformers 2 making bucketloads of coin was nearly enough to make me lose faith in humanity as well. And Pixar are a shining example that creative integrity and financial reward need not be mutually exclusive.
You know what's interesting, though? I live in Australia, and here we have a film industry that has been driven into the ground largely by filmmakers with "artistic integrity", who are true to whatever visions inspire them, but make films that no audience wants to see - largely navel gazing, pretentious, dull pieces of shit.
Here in Australia, we have an industry run by arthouse toffs with no concern for the business imperative of filmmaking.
It requires a happy middle ground - the type of ground populated by guys like Chis Nolan and Pixar - where creative integrity meets the financial imperative. Oh what a world that would be.
Until then, brand-based, marketing-driven filmmaking - remakes, sequels, prequels, requels, squeakuels - will continue to dominate. Aggressive marketing campaigns driving consumers like cattle, duping them through the gates on opening weekend, with no regard for the quality of the product as long as the numbers for the first three days are good.

"what would be cliche is if protagonist shows up to rescue mentor in a helicopter, and we see this OVER AND OVER again."We HAVE seen this OVER and OVER again, in dozens of action movies. If we drill down to specifics, my point still stands. Also, when I was discussing the classic three-act structure, I didn't say anything about that itself being a 'cliche'; I was referring to your assertion that The Matrix was full of narrative surprises and was unpredictable in terms of story, which it is anything but. That was a completely different point of the argument. You said "When you watch the movie, you know beforehand what the characters will probably say and how the scene will play out, and obviously how it will end.", referring to Avatar. I say this applies equally to The Matrix - and it will apply to Inception also. It would seem that people simply play favorites when it comes to their definitions of what constitutes a cliche as opposed to a logical dramatic construct - an 'if the shoe fits' attitude. The terms used to argue the difference seem to be remarkably and selectively fluid. As I demonstrated, your definitions could reasonably apply equally to all three mentioned films. On an unrelated note, Robert McKee is a fraud. Anyone who argues that the use of voice-over narration is inherently lazy and the recourse of hacks obviously never saw, for example, Barry Lyndon or Taxi Driver.

It's by far his weakest area, and the hand to hand combat in both Batman movies was damn near incomprehensible.

    trailer

    by ssquirrel

This is the only Inception trailer that actually tells us anything about what the movie is about in a coherent fashion. The trailer looked pretty cool and the cast is great, should be fun.

I'll never understand why people keep on harping about Nolan not being good directing action. When in fact it's the oposite, he's one of the top directors doing action. If people measure good action as the type of bullshit that we see in a Michael Bay movie or those over-exagerated CGI stuff from movies like GI JOE, then i say for sure, Nolan is better then that crap. Nolan knows more about how to make an action scene then the vast majority of the so-called action directors. This notion of Nolan being bad at action is just dogmatic nonsnese based on nothing at all that can be seen in his movie.

Looks great and sounds great and is probably great

    by hapapapa72

But I'll wait a few weeks to catch it. Some of the Nol-hards bug the shit outta me for some reason. Somebody else mentioned it, it's like they think he's running for office or something. They're just well-made movies, that's all. And I remember the days when Cameron could do no wrong. At least Nolan doesn't seem to have a trace of Cameron's arrogance. Unlike the Nol-hards. They all think they're in fucking Mensa or something. It's funny as hell.

    Michael Caine is "Exposition Man"

    by bswise

*Whew* I'm glad Michael Caine is in this to advance the plot and help the lead character understand their motivations.

I bet you at least once in this film

    by rectalblowout

we're all going to be saying: "WTF! That's a dream, I thought this part was the awake part." I bet Nolan blurs the lines between dreams and what's real as a twist to confuse us and to send us down a road thinking one thing then out of the blue a bitch slap, right cross to the fucking head.

And the fucked up thing is when that happens, I bet my lip will be bleeding for real in the theater. I better take some Advil and a bandaid just in case. But the next time I wake up, my lip will be fine. You figure it out!

    Leo has my respect...

    by suntzu77

Leo got my respect (acting-wise) with "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." I like the roles he's picking as well... "The Departed","Shutter Island","Blood Diamond","Inception"... it goes on and on. Now, if he'd only taper-down on his global warming diatribes. If he wants to debate someone... I'd like to see him debate Nigel Lawson.
