Capote to play Captain America villain Arnim Zola!

Published at:  May 07, 2010 6:04:23 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I don't know a ton about Captain America, to be honest. I followed his stuff through The Avengers more than his own books when I was growing up and I haven't really dug into the back issues in my adulthood. I need to work on that because I know I'd love the WW2 stuff.

Plus I'm a fan of Jack Kirby's work and I know he had a heavy hand in the early Cap books.

In fact, Kirby created the character they just cast up for the feature film version. You'll know Toby Jones from his work in INFAMOUS as Truman Capote, his turn as Karl Rove in Oliver Stone's W or as Olly, the likable clerk from Frank Darabont's THE MIST. He's a great actor and has a great look. According to THR's Heat Vision Blog he'll be playing Arnim Zola, a genetic engineer. But will he have has head in his gut like he was drawn:

If so, then they're going fucking crazy with this movie! But Zola's involvement could play into a bit more of a sci-fi element than I was expecting as he created monsters and clones for the Third Reich.

Doing a little bit of research I also see that he transferred Hitler's brain into a clone that became a super-villain decades after the war called The Hate-Monger. I doubt we'll be seeing that in the movie, but if the character's there you never know! Only if Millennium Films were making these movies.

Thoughts?

Skull and Zola? This isn't looking good.

    by v'shael

The fact is, Captain Americas origins are tied to World War 2, whereas almost every other Marvel hero has had their origin tweaked and updated over the years.

That means that *only* Captain Americas origins and stories from that time, are the hinky immature "funny-book" stories.

You can't make a decent movie out of such savagely poor source material. It can't be done.

Now, if they were planning to jettison the rubbish, then maybe they could have made it work. But clearly someone has decided that the first movie must take us to the twee funny book Red Skull, Zemo, Zola days of yore.

    Yuk.

acctually the newer comics have the origins of Nick Fury (with his none ageing) Wolverine(first canadian super-soldier) all tied in to the Captain America WW2 origin story. They are quite good. I can´t see the Zola character ever being what he became later (picture above) in this Cap movie, but him being a mad scientist character could work well. Im wondering now how long this movie will run. It seems they have a lot to cover.... Im guessing the relationship between Cap and Bucky(not gay relationship....ohh you guys) is the one that will be hacked. And thats not cool since the Winter Soldier is a real cool character. Zola could easily be involved with brainwashing Bucky after Cap flies off into the ice...

he will have his head in his chest. They're going to have a hard enough time making Red Skull's look fit; Zola is probably going to be played straight. The fact that Toby Jones is in this in any role is a great thing for the movie.

    by sithmenace

Hideous experiments, glimpses of the Holocaust, savage evil high ranking military figures, etc. The worse they make the Nazis look, the more heroic and cheer inducing it's going to be when Cap first shows up. I would love to see a 20 minute opening sequence with the horrors of Nazi Germany spotlighted, the creation of the Red Skull and hideous experiments before we get into the Cap origin. But it's Joe Johnston comic book film, so my expectations are low. Hugo Weaving is good news though.

I doubt you could find a single comic creator today that wouldn't admit to aspiring to be as good as Jack Kirby, Joe Simon, Will Eisner, Bill Everett, Sheldon Moldoff or any other geniuses of the '40s.
It wasn't called the Golden Age of Comics for nothing.

And, for the record, Kirby created Arim Zola in the 1970s.

V'Shael is dead wrong about this one. Zola is essential to Cap's origin, as is Red Skull. And they are key components of the recent Brubaker storylines, very cleverly done, very aware of current politics and events, and not cheesy and not outdated. Totally expected Philip Seymour Hoffman...

    by jaka

...and that was exciting. Would have made me WAY more interested in this movie. Now I'm just kinda bothered by the misleading column header and still have the same lukewarm interest I had in this movie before.

    HEAD IN CHEST!

I also expected Hoffman based on the headline, but this guy is okay. Aside from the skill he has shown with other roles giving me hope, his weird face should make him a memorable villain.

I love the old 1960 captain america series;)

    by thedannerdaliel

Baron Zemo goes for twenty years with that super adhesive keeping the mask on his face. Ironman gets it on him, and in 2 seconds comes up with the brilliant plan Zemo couldn´t think of during all those years. MAKE A SUPER ANTI-ADHESIVE:)and does, within 2min. Got to love the simplicities of those first Marvel comics.....

Toby Jones was great in The Mist.

    by tedkordlives

I mean, he WAS the character I'd been picturing in my head all those years since I read the novella. Either way they go with the Zola in the movie, I'm glad to see that he's included. But shouldn't Stan Lee play Dr.Erskine? It's more or less a cameo, anyway...

    Too many bullshitters in here!

    by ambrosechasewillrise

As much as you bitch and complaine that the movie will suck because of Arnim Zola's television gut, or Chris Evans playing Cap, you are all still going to stand in line to see it. Even the ass holes bitching about it. Shut the fuck up, wait and see if it'll actually suck, and then rant like a bunch of bitches watching Desperate Housewives.

    What's the deal btw?

    by phineas_flavel

Not every super hero movie has to be "grounded in reality" like Batman. Is it realistic that a guy turns into a big green monster or that whole suit of armor unfolds itself from a briefcase? Marvel is different and more fun. People who complain about this probably secretly whack it to pictures of Steven Seagal. Just sayin.

    by phategod2

Namor this movie just sounds Bigger and Bigger. This Avenger project will either cement Marvel studios as a Powerhouse or cost them everything. Maybe after is over they can buy the rights back from sony and Fox.

I dig PSH, but for my money INFAMOUS is not only a better movie, Jones is earth-shaking in the lead role. Can't wait to see him in this.

Thought it was PS Hoffman too

    by detectivesoap

I think he's slightly overrated (couldn't STAND Capote), but you gotta love Syndoche and fucking um um Before the Devil knows you're Dead..yes! Smothering daddy with pillow= frighteningly over-the-top depressing shit a la Magnolia----except when Aimee Mann fucked up Magnolia, and PTAs relatively mature movie turned into some emo kids high school diary

    O.K...Figured it out.

    by phineas_flavel

wouldn't it be awesome if in the movie there were two people that the serum worked on..Steve Rogers and Nick Fury? Then it would be doubly awesome if nick were a bit younger than Cap and he were the original Bucky! Of course he would be the sidekick because it was the 40's and he's black. Them he could have gone on and been the baddass leader of the Howling Commandos after Cap was lost trying to stop the rocket. Then it would be so hilarious if in modern times Cap kept slipping and calling Samuel L. Jackson Bucky. That's a great way to insert some comedy into it without overtly doing so.

Once I found out Chris Evans was playing Cap

    by samsquanch

I gave up hope. His origin story will probably be something like:

"Young hotshot Stevie Rogers and his bunk buddy 'Bucky" have seen some shit. After one of Saddam's occult-enchanced anthrax bombs goes of in Stevie's face during the first Gulf War, he goes into a state of suspended animation (a la Austin Powers) for nearly 20 years! He wakes up to a very different world. Bucky is now an old man, well into his late 30's. Wildly different tastes and cultural mores have taken over, a black man in the White House, swearing on TV, not to mention such modern technological marvels as the "cell phone", and something called "the internet". Thanking his lucky stars that America won not only that gulf war, but another more recent Battle of Civilizations as well, avenging an attack on America's soil but the ultra-powerful evil mastermind Saddam, Stevie gets back to the business of chasing tail, cracking wise, and finishing college. If not for the Gulf War Syndrome serum that gave him his powers, young Stevie Rogers might be able to live a normal life, and not the dual life as the icon of American pride and freedom itself, Captain America."
