Cat Shit One... It's Happening!

Remember the trailer with the private military contractor bunnies shooting the camel terrorists that came out of last year's Tokyo Anime Festival? I'd been pessimistic about this Cat Shit One animated project coming to fruition... looks like I was wrong.
Director Kazuya Sasahara from Studio Anima has confirmed that the first episode of the CG series will be completed by August of this year. Currently, it is targeted for a Japanese release, with international plans yet to be formed. Scheduling for episode two is also still undecided.
Motofumi Kobayashi's original Cat Shit One manga was released in North America by ADV in North America as "Apocalypse Meow." It was a didactic history of the Vietnam war with the American soldiers depicted as rabbits (a pun, USA GI as in usagi, as in the Japanese word for rabbit) and Vietnamese as cats (Koreans as dogs, Japanese as chimps, Russians as bears, ect). Originally aimed at an audience with an interest at military matters, narrative was used to stage a look at the nature and history of the conflict.
The animated project looks to be inspired by Cat Shit One '80, though updated to reflect a post Cold War situation.

I guess you should ask the guy who wrote Maus why he used animals too. Come on, man, its such an easy answer. Substituting animals instead of people can have a different effect on the viewer's psychology or it can be for allegory or it can be to make a violent, dramatic situation comical. "Just use people" you say. Then it just becomes your standard war film everyone's seen a billion times.

Can't put my finger on it. Maybe it's in the animation. maybe it's something about the way the animal look. Maybe it's the hump hole in the camels' clothes? I dunno... sounds like a cool idea, but I think I'd rather just read the comic/graphic novel.

I was hoping they'd make this thing. I loved the trailer when it was posted here, what, years ago? It seems like the Japanese are playing this seriously, but it feels like a twisted and funny bit of business to me. So instead, they use allegory (you know, like Godzilla=the atomic bomb, etc...)
Cat Shit One is the artist's/producers' way of getting around the Japanese taboo about war movies in order to tell a story about modern warfare.
I dunno if it's true, it's just what one guy told me once. -
