Matthew Vaughn’s X-MEN Movie To Hit Cinemas In 13 Months!!

Published at:  May 05, 2010 1:48:08 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Is Fox in grave danger of losing the rights to make “X-Men” movies or something?

Fox has sealed a deal with “Kick-Ass” director Matthew Vaughn to helm prequel “X-Men: First Class” and the studio has already set a surprising date for it to hit cinemas:

June 3, 2011

That’s less than 13 months from now.

"Iron Man 2" began principal photography on April 6, 2009 and hit Peruvian cinemas on April 29, 2010. Also less than 13 months.

So it can be done. It's just that "Iron Man 2" seemed like a sure thing from the week "Iron Man' opened. "First Class" always seemed less certain, perhaps because it will feature an unfamiliar cast in familiar roles. (There was even thought -- while "Chuck" creator Josh Schwartz was scripting the project -- that "First Class" might emerge as a sequel focusing on a new generation of X-Men.)

I’m hoping Vaughn can pull off something great. I adored “Layer Cake” and “Kick-Ass” and I’m keen to see what he can do with a Young Erik Lensherr and Young Charles Xavier.

Word is "First Class" producer Bryan Singer (who directed the first two "X-Men" movies) has been auditioning potential young Cyclopses and Marvel Girls in the same sessions he’s using for “Jack The Giant Killer.”

Scripting on this project began in November 2008. Singer has been involved since late last year.

Find the Hollywood Reporter’s story on the matter here.

Oh well. I'm a huge comics fan, and I like the director....but I do not want this movie unless it's a total 100% reboot. I absolutely loved X2 particularly, but 3 really killed me on this franchise film-wise.

I'm surprised Vaughan has agreed to this - whatever Rothman promised, I have no doubt he'll be all up in Vaughan's business throughout the production and we'll end up with another undercooked mess like Wolverine. Speaking of which, look out for the "surprise" announcement that Hugh Jackman will somehow have a leading role in this. No way Fox will let an X-Men movie out of the gate without their adamantium cash-cow on board (pardon the mixed met

Seriously. 13 months? It's like they don't even care. I'm wondering what's going on behind the scenes that Vaughn would accept this kind of schedule after what happened to him on X3. No cast. Probably no final script. I wish Fox would care.

    by donnacha

With a smaller, younger cast of mostly unknowns, that least leaves a lot more cash to throw on sfx. With less to spend on egos and backend deals, they can afford to book ten effects houses to rush this out instead of four. Besides, Spielberg shoved out "War Of The Worlds" in a year and still had time to do "Munich" (not an indicator of quality, just an observation of how a critically and commercially successful film can be made in a short time).

    by mr. evolved

X3 had a terrible script, but if it had been relatively the same (same actors, Phoenix saga) except with an awesome script then it would have been fantastic. With this it looks like they are trying to make X-men smaller, when what they need to be doing is re-imagining it bigger and darker.

They can't use Beast, Angel or Iceman, and they were 3 of the original 5. Can't use Logan, Colossus, Rogue, Nightcrawler. Kitty is out. Storm was also an adult in the franchise, so I'd say she's in for sure. They get a black character at the same time so I'd think she's a lock. Good lord, not Singer again!

    by colloquiallyborn

While X-Men and X-Men 2 were hits, we have to remember that these were the first in a long line of SuperHero movies, but if you watch them again, it also bugs me that Singer changed so much. It worked ok, but today, after Iron Man finally scored big by staying close to the character, and with Batman keeping it fairly simple, I think Singer's time has passed. While let's not rush this movie as per X3; let's give it to someone who actually isn't going to ask an assistant to go out and do research. Let's give this to a Director who knows the character, who know the origins, who will get Cyclops, Hank, Iceman, Angel, and Marvel Girl right!I think the Angel character was brutally murdered in X3 with his 2 scenes... They should've never had let them go "Teen" on him. Should've been the same age as Cyclops. The whole start with Iceman being part of the school kids was for me a disapointment, he shold've been an integral part of Team 1, not just another kid trying to score the new chick... Give it to someone who'll care about the damn project and reboot the whole damn thing to the great Origins that helped build the storyline to greatness!Singer only shows that his ego is now too big, and giving him full control of a movie is not ok, just ask WB about that Superman crap they pulled out a couple of years ago. That was a totally signed Signer movie with full creative control!.. Not Good!

    by ghostdad

I garauntee you Fox thinks that Wolverine is the only member of the X-Men people know, and he somehow gets shoehorned into the story. Since Xavier basically forms the X-Men at the end of Wolverine, I could see this following that and having Wolvie as the resident adult. Either way I hope this fails and Marvel somehow can get this franchise back.

    What a Potentially Rambling Timeline . . .

    by dave i

So they had the first three X-Men, then backtracked to the Wolverine quasi-origins movie, talked about a Magneto Origins movie that may or may not happen, and are now either doing a young Magneto & Xavier movie OR possibly a next class of recruits (or, simply, X-Men 4?). The lack of continuity is annoying, although if it's a Charles Meets Max might be chronologically accurate if they're starting with the Wolverine flick. Not to mention the movie production timeline. X-Men 3 was universally bashed (rightfully so) as horrible. Wolverine I haven't bothered to see, but apparently pretty bad. Having a rushed timeline on X-Men First Class after X-Men 3 was so soundly criticized and after Wolverine was universally labeled an awful, awful, awful piece of crap really makes me not want to see this. It's Fox. I'll pass.-Cheers

    Additionally . . .

    by dave i

By making some of the original X-Men kids, I'm not sure who (or how) they're going to assemble the "First Class" of the X-Men and have it make any sense or in any tie into the X-Men series of movies they drove off a cliff the last couple of movies. Beast and Iceman are out, Angel's out, Wolverine is out (I'd imagine they'd like to squeeze him in, but it would make absolutely no sense), Nightcrawler is out. Cyclops and Jean will be like, what, grade school kids? Who else of note could they add? Unless they get highly convenient selective amnesia, none of those core members of the X-Men can really be there. And are they going to de-age Sir Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart, or replace them (particularly stupid move, replacing Patrick "Born to Play Professor X" Stewart)?Sorry, I expect this to either suck, or be a bit patchy as they try to gloss over stuff. Regardless, I've lost faith that Fox can keep from screwing up anything and feel genuinely burned by their idiot moves, and think this movie franchise is probably dead. I'm going to go read a book instead.-Cheers

    Key words: BEGAN PRINCIPLE PHOTOGRAPHY

    by return_of_fett

Not BEGAN PRODUCTION. I hope that Singer has been been approving sets and all kinds of preproduction art, costumes, getting SPFX companies in line, etc. It sure didn't sound like ANY of that was being done when he was interviewed with Lauren Schuller-Donner like a month ago. He was telling her to "hold" that project for him.If not, the only way I see this working is if it's a low-budge affair like Kick Ass.

    by stalkeye

..however it's next to impossible to make a perfect X-Men movie, singer almost nailed it with the 2nd one, but it's hard to get over the lame casting and not to mention how Scott Summers once again played 3rd fiddle to Wolverine. It's X-Men, not the fucking wolverine show.I hope that Vaughn will stay close to the comic's roots otherwise, we might as well have josh wheldon helm the franchise. Best of luck.

"story will find them (Xavier and Magneto) working together to stop a global threat alongside other mutants (some familiar, some new), until a rift leads to their eternal war chronicled in the first three X-Men films."

So what we'll get is more Singer styled NON X-MEN bullshit that will have little, if anything at all, to do with the source material.

If Star Hump's quote is right, it's the answer to the question nobody is asking. Specifically, how a largely source-material-disregarding X-Men Origins story that nobody really wants (do they?) when X-Men I already did a fine job of setting up the X-Men, with most of the fan favorite mutants from the series they've worked hard to introduce going to be notably absent.Really, falling on the heels of the flop that was Wolverine (you'd think a pretty easy character to get right) this sounds like a movie that nobody is asking for or likely to care about. I'll definitely pass.-Cheers

Cyclops, Iceman, Beast, Angel, Jean Grey as Marvel Girl, and Professor X.
Ignore what has been twisted up before in the other X-films. Reboot it correctly with an inexperienced team going against Mesmero or something. Rehashing the Magneto crap is just too damn repetitive.
If they must do an early brotherhood, then please have Magneto, Toad, Mastermind, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch.
Get your rosters right, Marvel & Vaughn. That will foster alot of goodwill from the fans and earn you good buzz right out of the gate.

Beast wouldn't be out at all, BUT their would be some conflict regarding Scott and Jean's age. When Chuck found Scott he was a high schooler in Wolverine, Chuck and Mags found Jean as a kid, so if they follow through, either Jean's age will be retconned to where she's NOT ten years older as shown in the main series, OR she's technically the first X-man, not Scott.

before Wolverine, right? Because Stryker's son was frozen and therefore Xavier had already failed to "cure" him? But he had just picked up Scott and those other kids at the end...wait so it had been 15 years from X2 to Wolverine according to Stryker in X2. The beginning of X3 took place 20 years before...and X3 couldn't have been more than a year after X1 (it was only a month between X1 and X2 according to Scott). so Jean was the first? That actually makes her a little younger than Scott OR the same age. Eh fuck it.

Count me out. Everyone is bored senseless with this version of the X-Men. They really should just reboot it from scratch. From the description this is gonna be just as lame as Wolverine only with all the boring Xavier and Magneto stuff that was run into the ground the last time. We get it, they used to be friends and now their not. Magneto is not the only X-Men villain. Just like Lex Luthor isn't the only Superman villain either. Hopefully this will be the "Batman & Robin" level failure that will force them to take a few years off and comeback fresh.

    by mapman

Like previous posters have said, you people who fork over your money to see any superhero movie that comes out and/or buy the DVD are the reason companies like FOX continue to churn out substandard products on the cheap. It's Economics 101.
Think of it from their perspective. They can invest $100 million on this project and despite lambasting by critics and fans alike - despite the box office drops off 80% the following weekend - it will still make $200 million worldwide before DVD sales and rentals. They invest $100 million in a products and double their money. Where is the incentive for FOX to take an extra year to bring it out and polish the script? Are they going to make that much more profit? If they spent more time on it would it make Dark Knight money? Highly unlikely and risky. I think they proved that with X3 and Wolverine they can churn out any kind of mutant movie and make money. Switching directors on X3 from Singer to Ratner hardly hurt them at all. They got their product out on time and made a profit.
You may not like what FOX produces but at then end of the day they make a pretty tidy and risk free profit. Why would that want to let go of that cash cow?
If the public really voted with their wallets and rejected substandard product then things would change.

I knew they found Nightcrawler in X2, but couldn't remember Hank's connection to the team. So yeah, if he was introduced as an old friend then yeah he could show up as a blast from the past in a prequel. Nightcrawler would require some selective amnesia. by star hump

on cable. It really was a stinking pile of cowshit. Jackman should be embarrassed. And Liev Schrieber. Wow. I wonder what he was thinking when he saw himself on screen running like a dog. How about Will.i.am as a superhero? Hilarious. He was some kind of teleporting soul brother.

The movie was a half-assed mish-mash of the Weapon X mini-series that appeared in the Marvel Presents comic, Wolverine's solo comic, and that shitty Wolverine mini-series called Origin. The one where they renamed him James Howlett. I'm sure they lumped in some more shit too. They had to get the Blob from somewhere.

Cyclops' eye beams actually burned things, which was hilarious too. They couldn't even get the guy's powers right.

Things is, all they had to do was adapt the Weapon X mini-series. It was beautifully written and drawn by Barry Windor-Smith and it would have made a fantastic origin movie for Wolverine.

Just the minimal amount of research by the screenwriter and the studio and they would have their story just waiting for them, giftwrapped.

Instead, they flipped through a few comics, mixed it up in a boel and through the entire shitty mess at a wall and hoped it would stick. It didn't.

Watch. They're about to do the same damn thing with this new X-Men movie. The people at Fox, and the people they hire, just aren't talented enought to make a good X-Men film.

The odds are stacked against him since 1) he's only got 13 months which means they will totally rush pre-production on this and 2) Singer is producing this to keep his shitty X-Universe going so he can step in for another payday on X-Men 4. Vaughn is just a patsy in this situation. Even if he makes a great film, if this is still just a quick little piece of shit "X-Men:Origins" filler film and their jumping back to the modern age for X-MEN 4 so Bryan Singer can suck more life out of this franchise to sustain his shitty hack filmmaking career than this is all a waste. I'd take an X-Men TV show over this at this point.

    13 months?

    by glenn_the_tool

sounds like a supremely bad idea to me. you can't rush movies like these. i could go on at length about how terrible an idea is to rush a big-budget summer tentpole because it leaves less time to get the script just right and to cast the right actors and whatnot, but this is Fox we're talking about. we all know from their track record that they don't give a shit about making a quality movie. they've got a popular comic book franchise with popular characters and wide brand recognition. all that equates to rather sizeable box office numbers regardless of the film's quality.

    TedKordLives, keep it that way!

You'll hate yourself if you watch it. I'm a HUGE comic book geek, but only have marginal, cursory knowledge of X-Men and the history or it's main characters. Two-thirds of the Wolverine movie literally left me sitting there slack-jawed with a "what the fuck?!" expression on my face. It's not even that it's a terrible movie, it's just so many levels of wrong.

Honestly, the longer this talkback goes on...

    by jaka

...and the more I see how many people feel pretty close to the same about the third and fourth films, I think I'm starting to lean towards the reboot idea myself. Normally it's something I hate. But in this case I actually think it would be cool for them to start over and really honor the history of the comic book.

Does Fox have the balls to make X-Men without Wolverine?

    by curious jorge

The four movies thus far have pretty firmly established that Wolverine's origins are completely separate from the classic X-Men.

BECAUSE RUSHING MADE X-MEN 3 SOOOOO GOOD!

jaka: what would be the point of rebooting?

    by redhorsevector

with tom rothman running the show, the result will be the same. crank the movies out for summer, who cares if they're any good because people will show up just for the name. at this point, there needs to be a massive shakeup at fox before i trust them with any genre properties.

    I don't understand

    by samsquanch

Who are the member's of First Class? It can't be 60's classic- Cyclops, Jean, Beast, Angel and Iceman, because the last two were kids in the X-Movies. Beast looked about 50 years old, way older than Cyke anyway. Maybe he's a teacher. Ok, so, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, and who else? who haven't they done yet? Banshee? Sunfire? Polaris? Havok? Thunderbird? Or are we going to get some kind of weird mix-up, new characters in the past? Like, Jubilee in 1979? And that's another thing, I'm sure its been talked about here, but ages/dates/decade/era was all FUCKED in Wolverine. Cyclops looked about 10 years younger than his X-1 self, but it was supposed to be 30 years earlier. what the eff..?

    by samsquanch

I agree, to totally geek out for a second, when Cyclops' beams burned shit I got a little mad. The scary thing about his power is that it's PURE FORCE SHOOTING FROM HIS HEAD. Not some red laser beam. I know I sound like a giant nerd, but this is the kind of shit that matters. You don't call a home-run a touchdown for a reason.

I really hope they hire at least one virgin to check their facts, goddammit.

It's all about getting the details right - something Hollywood has consistently failed at doing. It matters. And your sports analogy is pretty apt. If Hollywood bungled significant details like that, say, in "The Blindside," the reviewers and audience would've howled bloody murder. "That's a touchdown, not a homerun! Don't these filmmakers know anything? Inexcusable!" It'd be all over the net.It would be called ut as sloppy filmmaking.

And sports fans aren't considered nerds even though they paint their faces, dress up in colorful gear to attend games (some even wear costumes), play fantasy versions of their favorite sports(which is pretty much Dungeons and Dragons) and obsessively pour over the details (stats) about their sports and their heroes who play them.

Oh, but if comics fans complain when filmmakers don't get the details right about their favorite characters, they're dismissed as nerds.

And look, you even called yourself a nerd. Not criticizing you at all, but I absolutely refuse to do that. There's too much self-loathing going on. I make no apologies for loving comics books and films, and for getting annoyed when these jerkoffs don't get the details right. Sure, the rest of the world calls me a geek, but I won't do it to myself.

FOX is single-handedly trying to kill the comicbook/superhero movie. You heard it here first.

I hear you about the nerd moniker, but I think about it a little differently. In my case there's nothing self-loathing about it. I'm old enough to be past the traumas of adolescence associated with those words, I've been married and divorced, changed careers, and I still care about whether or not Colossus has a Russian accent. I've accepted that there are always going to be things I'm interested in that the woman I'm seeing simply won't be able to identify with, or that some of my friends consider unforgivably dorky (even though I feel exactly the same way you do about their sports obsessions) I'm ok with all that. Especially since in my adulthood I've discovered that some very attractive ladies find nerdiness quite beguiling, (as long as you keep it to a respectable minimum) and knowing a lot of esoteric information about obscure pop culture can be an asset when meeting like-minded people in all walks of life. I had a client once who only wanted to work with me because I knew the Byrne/Claremont X-universe inside and out. Basically what I'm saying is that nerds aren't necessarily cool, but being one doesn't have to hurt your chances.

    Another Reboot

    by will2power

I hated the entire X-Man franchise. I hate it when you take a story and change it for no reason. Another Daredevil in the making. Why they keep going back to Singer/Ratner and all those other lame-o's is beyond me. The only way I would watch it is if they go back and read the comics and do them without changing the relationship of the characters. I mean, I can understand updating dialog to current terms, but changing the relationships sucks ass!

Vaughn; Forget that First Class Story

    by deelzbub

Yes, its classic. But you want a sure thing? Days of Future Past. Best tale in the X-men archives, IMHO. Alternate take on the X-men's future, a la LOST. Do it. Make money.

and make First Class in a reasonable time frame. With an expanded budget.
