Pretty damn cool news! Speirig Brothers to direct POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL!!!

Hey folks, Harry here with some damn fine news about POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL moving forward with the incredibly talented Speirig Brothers helming for Jim Henson Company and Omnilab Media. Hollywood Reporter broke the story telling us it'll be shot stereoscopically in 3D - that it'll be Live Action and Henson's Puppets and there will be CG elements as well. Probably due to the first character they tell us about:
Set hundreds of years after the events of the first movie when the world has once again fallen into darkness, "Power of the Dark Crystal" follows the adventures of a mysterious girl made of fire who, together with a Gelfling outcast, steals a shard of the legendary crystal in an attempt to reignite the dying sun that exists at the center of the planet. The screenplay has been written by Australian Craig Pearce based on an original script by Annette Duffy and David Odell. Fantasy artist Brian Froud will reprise his role as conceptual designer of the film.
Peter & Michael are to be trusted in my opinion. They're the sort of filmmakers that have proven to roll up their sleeves and get dirty if the budget isn't enough, if the studio won't fit the bill - these guys do it the way they want to - and having just watched DAYBREAKERS on Blu-Ray for the upcoming column - I was freshly reminded of why they kick so much ass. I really am quite fond of that film and UNDEAD. Now, for something entirely different from them! Can't wait!

    by Jaka

Sounds great! Love all parties involved. Flaming girl and a broken sun gives me some ideas as to what the story could be about and where it could go, but still cool. I hope they're left alone to take as long as they need, though. Because Froud and Henson Co. puppets together again makes me pretty damn happy.

    This is terrible news!!

    by WillSnake

I thought Genndy Tartakovsky was going to be helming the Dark Crystal sequel. So disappointed that he's not going to be involved. The Spreig Brothers are painfully overhyped and just plain average in opinion.

  • May 5, 2010, 12:56 a.m. CST

    Harry, what the H

are yo talking about this is HORRIBLE news, i was really looking forward to GENNDY TARTAKOVSKY doing this, he also said it would be a mix of Henson Muppets and CG, this sucks, I'm quite disappointed now, Daybreakers isn't nearly as good as anything Genndy has done.

  • May 5, 2010, 12:58 a.m. CST

The Dark Cystal was one of my favorite films as a kid. I hope this turns out to be good. I just hope they keep the dark tone of the original.

  • May 5, 2010, 1:06 a.m. CST

I have proof that this will be total shit

    by SlimButNotreally

It should be a prequel. The fact that no one realizes this is proof that the idiots in charge have no idea where to go with this. Few people are going to remember The Dark Crystal, and a prequel would be easier to follow

Plus, the first one starts kind of in the middle of a bunch of confusion. We don't know much. It pretty much just throws you right in the middle of some crap. We should see a great world and see how the crack in the crystal destroys it.

  • May 5, 2010, 1:07 a.m. CST

No disrespect to the Spreig's but Dark Crystal is

    by WillSnake

a childhood classic fave of mine, right along there with Princess Bride, and the Goonies. I do not doubt Spreig's ability to direct a modern feature film, but they are not qualified, and should be handed something else to direct, something along the lines of the latest xXx sequel.

  • May 5, 2010, 1:11 a.m. CST

    Did not care for Daybreakers

    by MattmanReturns

Daybreakers wanted to be an action movie, but had little action

    by hiperaktiv

Had Daybreakers actually decided what it wanted to be, it might have been a decent movie. It was like they were saying "do we want this to be an action movie or a sci fi drama?" we get elements of both but not anough of one to actually define the picture.

  • May 5, 2010, 1:28 a.m. CST

The Spierigs aren't fans of the original

    by Wookie_Weed

They never gave a shit about it before. This is a gig and a stepping stone to bigger success in Hollywood to them. If Brian Froud wasn't involved, i'd call this Avatar with Gelflings. Disappointed in the Henson Co for caving in to exec pressure for 3D. Sorry, but this sequel isn't being made from inspiration -- Henson Co went to the Spierigs, the Spierigs didn't go to the Henson Co saying they had a brilliant idea for a sequel. They're professionals, but their hearts aren't in it like Henson, Froud, and Frank Oz.

  • May 5, 2010, 1:48 a.m. CST

  • May 5, 2010, 2:14 a.m. CST

    this is NOT good news!

    by RedEgiraahgnal

Seriously. It's not. Except when it turns out that Genndy Tartakovsky has changed his name to Spierig Brothers.

  • May 5, 2010, 2:14 a.m. CST

Good riddance, tartakovsky, or whatever his name is

    by GrendelGrendelGrendel

That guy makes more "deals" than projects anyone can care about. Can't write, can't direct other than short form. Takes the money, and runs away faster than the Russians from the Finns.

  • May 5, 2010, 2:21 a.m. CST

"The Spierigs aren't fans of the original"?

    by Dreamwriter

Where did you read this? In some interview somewhere? Or any of the other things you said?

  • May 5, 2010, 2:34 a.m. CST

At least this is still happening...

    by bubcus

I had heard a while back that Genndy Tartakovsky wasn't attached to the project anymore and that had me disappointed. What got him onboard in the first place was that it'd involve puppets and that Brian Froud (and I think even Frank Oz) were on board.

We've known for some time there will be CG elements incorporated and that does make sense. I presume we'll still have incredible hand-crafted backdrops (and I hope we do), but CG will benefit the film significantly.

I'll add that I completely trust Jim Henson studios. After all, while doing Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, they faced doing the Vogons with CG and came to the realization that it would work much better as costumes/puppets. And they were right and I love them for it.

I love the original Dark Crystal movie for all that it is and am happy that the sequel is still underway and hadn't been scrapped as I had feared.

  • May 5, 2010, 2:54 a.m. CST

    Please, NO Skeksis, Garthim, etc....

    by Admonisher

Early PR mentioned Skeksis, Garthim, etc. That would completely cheapen the original, IMHO -- not to mention, it would contradict Henson's carefully constructed mythology. I pray that's changed, and they've come up with something entirely new.

  • May 5, 2010, 3:02 a.m. CST

I hope they bring back Gary Kurtz for this one.

    by gotilk

If this was made a few years ago it would have been 100% "Compooter Animatuhd" (executive spelling) in order for it to get made at all. Now we get it mostly practical and in 3d. Awesome. With Froud!

  • May 5, 2010, 7:57 a.m. CST

    Excellent news!

    by AndoSoundsLikeAMong

Just glad this going ahead. Yes! Optimism, people! It stil lives! There is nothing like the original out there, only Labyrinth really comes close, and while it is admittedly a little dark and dry those epic bars of music alone make me want to put the Blu-ray on right now. Not to mention having Froud back!
On a side note, one of the reasons Dark Cyrstal was said to have performed poorly was because it came out in the same year as ET. Here in Japan, however, it outperformed even ET! Fingers crossed they respect the fanbase and don't palm us off with the normal 6 month wait beyond the US release date... at least Iron Man II and Toy Story III are within a month or so this year...

  • May 5, 2010, 7:58 a.m. CST

  • May 5, 2010, 8:02 a.m. CST

    In fact...!

    by AndoSoundsLikeAMong

Just checked my facts there, not only did it beat ET in Japan (and in France), it was the highest grossing film not only that year, but remained the highest grossing film EVER here until Titanic was released 14 years later!
Forgot just lining up release dates! Red carpet in Tokyo!

  • May 5, 2010, 8:24 a.m. CST

I'm surprised there's not more excitement for this.

    by rbatty024

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, this is a website full of cynics, but this is a classics children's film. The original was the kind of film that respected the imagination of children and refused to talk down to them. Granted, we have been getting more of them in recent years (Pixar's films, Coraline, the Fantastic Mr. Fox), but for a long while these kinds of movies were rare. There was a time when Jim Henson was the only one making movies that could really tap into a childlike sense of imagination.

  • May 5, 2010, 8:24 a.m. CST

Not sure how to feel about this. I was really up for...

    by FlickaPoo

    ...a Tartakovsky CRYSTAL.
I don't say this about most movies, but the original really is sacred.

  • May 5, 2010, 8:44 a.m. CST

Sprieg Bros Can do FX, no doubt....

    by UCB Agent1

But their ability to actually deliver a full, great film is very much in doubt. Daybreakers is about 60% of a good movie, and that Zombie movie they did fell apart as well. I think handing them the reins to this is a terrible, terrible idea.

  • May 5, 2010, 8:47 a.m. CST

    Looking forward to this

    by CartoonFanboy

Just re-watched the original a couple weeks back and really enjoyed it. Concept and creative talent seem like a good fit as well. Too bad about Genndy Tartakovsky but I'd rather him stay in the action-adventure cartoon genre anyway, looking forward to Sym-bionic.

  • May 5, 2010, 9:57 a.m. CST

Jesus H Christ, here's the EXACT quote:

    by Wookie_Weed

From "We had a love-hate relationship with the original, but we have to admit a weird fascination with those fuzzy Muppet-like characters. And given that we're big fans of anything Henson, we'll have to check it out!" What do they mean by "have to check it out", they haven't actually seen TDC? I'm telling ya, they don't have the passion Frank Oz had for Aughra.

  • May 5, 2010, 9:59 a.m. CST

Yeah these quotes from the Spierigs are scary

    by D.Vader

Love hate relationship with the original? Fuck yoose.

  • Or for Aughra: Watch Oz, he fucking loves the characters, the world, his work. I can NOT see the Spierigs match that level of passion and love for the project. Tartakovsky yes, he had it, the man's an artist. But like I said, Odell wrote the story, Froud is chief artist, the Henson Co in charge, so hopefully the Spierigs pull their weight and don't fuck around like it's a stepping stone to brighter lights in Hollywood.

So yet another failure is being resurrected? WHY?

    by FeralAngel

Dark Crystal was a huge box-office bomb, and some schmuck wants to bring it back? Sleeping Jesus, why do so many people In Hollywood think that anything old is gold? First Muppets are getting a reboot - although simply the boot would be a better idea - and now one of the dorkiest films ever to flop worldwide is being primed for a comeback. Why do some people think the Muppets have any lingering value (aside from Sesame Street Muppets, which I assume are still profitable, thanks to that little fuzzy bastard Elmo)? Every attempt to revive them has ended in disaster. I mean CHRIST, at least when the Chipmunks franchise was brought back as a movie, it had a solid track record of success behind it, and in fact had been brought back before, successfully, several times - the remake TV show was a hit in the '80's, for instance, and the music comeback album "Chipmunk Punk" was a huge success. In fact, every time the Munks have been brought back or re-imagined, they've been successful. Whereas every time the Muppets are brought back, they flop: Muppets Tonight, Muppets Wizard of Oz, Muppets In Space - flop, flop, flop. Yet the nitwits at Disney are giving it another go, I guess because it now owns those old things and is stuck with trying to make them profitable. Very stupid idea, but the Dark Crystal revival is even stupider. About the only good thing about that movie were the designs. I wish Brian Froud had just illustrated a Dark Crystal book and left it at that. Watching those imaginative creatures of his bob and jerk around in puppet form in the film was kind of pathetic. They just did not work as puppets the moment they started moving. Feh.

in that literally every single person I know saw it as children, mostly on video, and it became an indelible part of our collective fantasy landscape. Also, it has done gangbuster business in reissues for the home market.
I was really excited about Tartakovsky doing this -- the Spierg brothers, not so much. I just don't have the same unthinking faith in them. UNDEAD was kind of shit; I haven't seen DAYBREAKERS so no thoughts there.
But I'll still lay down money to see it. I love the art of puppetry. Whoa Feral. . .

    by Ingeld

No, Muppets do not get me wet, neither does the making of muppet movie make me foam at the mouth. No offense meant, I was merely commenting on the tone of your post. Your rather visceral reaction to the announcement of a Muppet movie is usually reserved for angry mobs protesting the latest social injustice. Okay, I exaggerate there, but it was a little over the top. At least your passionate about something--that is in your favor. Finally, I do not have a girlfriend. I don't think my wife will let me.

    by brodiebruce_405

All those horrible jokes the horrible CGI aliens were making? This SUCKS! Leave it alone! Henson's corpse was much be rolling the barrell of a six shooter in his grave. On release day, he ends another life.

apalling spelling should be pointed out

    by frank cotton

or it will never be corrected. grammar and syntax not so much, as many editors don't know good from bad, so it's pointless to expect too much from the general population

"We had a love-hate relationship with the original"

    by Dreamwriter

That was NOT the Speirig Brothers who said that, that was Patrick Lee from SciFi Wire.

    JJ wasn't a Trek Fan

    by cylon_conspiracy

And I think his movie came out pretty damn good. You don't have to have been exposed to a movie in your youth in order to appreciate it. And one could say if they were huge fans of the original maybe they would be too precious about it and wouldn't have the proper objectivity to make important choices.

But that's not the point for me, just that the Muppets are coming back and Dark Crystal is one of my all-time favorite fantasy movies. I'm so glad that old-school FX and puppetry are coming back. When these characters are physically there on screen, you connect with them way more than you can with an animated clone trooper.

I clicked the link and read the blurb. My first thought was, "whoever posted this thinking it was proof of Spierigs saying Word 1 about anything is an idiot and/or illiterate."

    "...flop worldwide..."

    by AndoSoundsLikeAMong

I guess you missed my comments on it being the highest grossing film ever in Japan, beating ET in the same year, and that record lasting until Titanic came out? It wasn't a flop there, or in France either. The film was also quite critically accalimed and is regarded pretty well now, having gathered a following in the years that followed.
The very fact that it wasn't so successful in the UK / US also suggests this is more than just a cash grab. Fantasy fans should definitely have something to look forward to here.

This is good news, in my opinion. I think the Spierig brothers will deliver us a pretty goddamn tasty story.
Good choice!

Feralangel is right but not popular

    by Sepulchrave

And in a forum where people use phrases like 'our collective fantasy landscape', he's not going to be heard. The Muppets are dead. They died with Henson. Grow up.

has always been one of my favorite movies. I can understand how it might not be for some people. Froud isn't exactly everyone's cup of tea. And movies with muppets as the main characters might not sound great to some. But the sheer artistry of this movie in a time where simple computer FX fixes did not exist and to do something so completely and totally out of the box is enough to deserve at least some praise and respect. That there is a sequel being made makes me happy in anticipation. But I'm sorry I don't know anything about the Speirig brothers. If they F this up they should be banished from the planet.
