Hugo Weaving is now the RED SKULL!

Published at:  May 04, 2010 3:43:45 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here about to welcome Danny Trejo in my home - weird day. Seriously. Anyway - in other news looks like Elrond, Mr Smith, V has another bit of iconography to add to his very killer collection of awesome parts... he's gonna be THE RED SKULL! Here's the press release...

Hugo Weaving Confirmed as the Red Skull in
Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Marvel Studios announced today that Hugo Weaving has been cast to star as Johann Schmidt aka the Red Skull in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Johann Schmidt was drafted into loyal service of The Third Reich and renamed “The Red Skull”. The character will be updated for the feature adaptation. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Weaving was last seen in THE WOLFMAN and his voice is very recognizable as Megatron from TRANSFORMERS and TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN as well as Noah the Elder from HAPPY FEET. His other film credits include starring in V FOR VENDETTA, THE MATRIX franchise, and THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, THOR on May 6, 2011, and Marvel Studios’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Weaving is represented by CAA, Shanahan Management and attorney David Weber.

Harry you get an A+ for random name dropping... Danny Trejo has absolutely nothing to do with this news yet you found some weird way of just slipping it in there... way to go. Now, about Mr. Weaving, it seems like a very safe choice. Obviously I have no doubt that he's going to do a fantastic job with the part or at least I hope so. I just can't help but think if there was anyone else out there that would have been a more inspired or original choice? Anyway, have fun entertaining your guest? who is it again?

    by calloway98

I mean... It's CAP! He is the cornerstone of the Avengers. I am hoping for more WWII time and LESS modern-day Cap! The first film should be an adaptation of Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty. (The 4-part graphic novel) The whole USO think KILLS me. Steve Rogers is an ARTIST!! He designs the Cap costume as an American responce to Nazi PROPOGANDA!! NOT to go in a USO show! THAT .. more than anything else... scares me about this film. Just be FAITHFUL to the original Captain America story!! The MORE you change... the MORE you have a chance to fuck up!

    Shield: Project Defenders

    by donkingkong

With the Hobbit movies somewhat on hold, Marvel is gunning for Guillermo del Toro to direct and Neil Gaiman to write Dr. Strange [link removed]

Can a Doctor Strange-centric "Defenders" movie that fits into what Marvel is now calling the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” finally be in the works?...

SHIELD pulls together a paranormal special ops team after the Military/SHIELD/NASA made contact with a "Beyonder" (or Celestial, some sort of "magical" trans-dimensional entity, perhaps an Asgardian?) SHIELD realizes it doesn't have the capabilities to ascertain if this “thing” is a threat or not. Thus sets the premise for the Defenders movie, where the use of occult, fringe science, brains, and brawn are employed to defeat a multi-dimensional and or “secret invasion” cosmic threat to save the day in such a way that Avengers cannot.

The team that SHIELD assembles to defend us from such an invader will be a group of eccentric scientist/academia types culled to form the "Defenders", the oddball counterpoint to the distinguished Avengers team. Project "Defenders" will be the “Twilight Zone” of the new Marvel movie franchises; they want it to be less of an action movie and have more of a creepy thriller type of vibe to it. The Defender operatives will consist of group leader - the brilliant Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange former neurosurgeon turned renowned occultist scholar and “metaphysicist” (character to be loosely based around Aleister Crowley/Terence McKenna eccentric by way of Robert Langdon), Namor McKenzie (Sub-Mariner, the superhuman Jacques-Yves Cousteau by way of Rudolf Steiner, believes he’s the literal Prince of Atlantis) , Dr. Robert Bruce Banner (Hulk, brilliant “omnidisciplinary” scientist, the world’s greatest expert on gamma radiation… need we say more?), Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym (Ant-Man, MIT professor renowned quantum physicist), and his partner Janet Van Dyne(Wasp, one-time student to Pym now associate, extremely bright but introverted Lady Gaga “individualist” type). Themes incorporated into Defenders movie include motifs from the bestselling magical/occult/secret society Dan Brown books, along with themes from the more recent Marvel series involving Secret [link removed] storylines (specifically the newer S.H.I.E.L.D. 2010 comic series). They'll be looking for lean lesser-known actors to play non-super hero type characters, and there are ruminations that Strange may be pushed forward to play a crucial role as catalyst to merge the magical other-dimensional realms like Asgard into the more "realistic" Iron Man universe.

Questions remain about the timeline and release of the Doctor Strange character into the big screen. Will we see Doctor Strange in a smallish part for the upcoming Avengers movie helping to usher in the “magical” component onto the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or will Strange remain left out of the Avengers universe altogether for now, and another plot device or character be used to infuse the “magical elements” instead of him?... They are determined to bring on Dr. Strange movie post Ant-Man, the question remains will Strange remain side-lined for now? Some at Marvel are extremely hush-hush as plot points, characters as well as want-lists that are still being hashed-out for upcoming films, others think it’s good to gauge public opinion about what properties the public truly cares for and how they can be incorporated to the larger Marvel Movie-verse whilst staying true to the premise of the characters. Some of us like me see the potential and are really pushing for a Doctor Strange-centric Defenders movie but more importantly having Strange play a pivotal if not smallish role in the upcoming Avengers movie.

I love any news about Hugo Weaving. Seriously, the man has done such a great job as an actor and making good career choices that I'd love to read about him making soup for dinner.
I have no idea who Red Skull is, but he sounds kind of scary. Based on what I've read about the movie "Captain America" so far, the dude might be someone I'll now root for since it's Hugo Weaving.
I can't ever quite root for a guy who has the small-mindedness to call himself "Captain America" anyway. I hope he gets his ass kicked by Red Skull.

    by thecomedian

Giving him an origin that works better for Weaving kind of like what they did with Jack on Batman '89. The 616 origin is that Johann Schmitt is basically a Nazi parallel of Steve Rodgers. A meek, faceless little bell boy who Hitler himself thinks he can mold into the perfect Nazi. Since Weaving is obviously older than Chris Evans they're probably just going to turn him into a super villain version of Joseph Goebbels. I wouldn't sweat it, especially if Joss Whedon is doing the rewrite. He knows and loves these characters.

    by kontarsky

Thanks for confirming what we already knew, AICN! Anyway, I'll just stick to watching Un Village Francais for my Red Skull fix. Agent Elrond's going to do his one-note villain performance and this will be cartoony boolshit. Meanwhile, on Un Village Francais and Sniper: Reloaded, Richard Sammel will continue to kick ass and play awesome German villains. This is why Hollywood is a piece of crap, specifically Marvel studios. As we saw with Inglourious Basterds, it doesn't take a big-name actor to bring justice to a role. Marvel doesn’t care, and has been doing the opposite for most of their new films. They are only using no names for a few roles, mainly in Brannagh's Thor, which I actually do respect him for a bit. They want big names in the supporting roles to get a large number of groups in the theatres. It doesn’t really matter, considering that these are films on comic book properties that would draw in a large crowd, IRREGARDLESS of who is cast. We saw this with Lord of the Rings films. Poor Marvel. They don’t know better.Anyway, the director is a lazy dunghead, offered Weaving the role over a year ago when they were filming Wolfman, and I have absolutely no interest hearing someone give a fake German accent in this day and age. His voice is not how I imagine Red Skull's at all. A man with a more sinister voice that is capable of politeness (Waltz, Sammel) would have nailed the role and brought more gravitas that was needed to sink a chill in to your very spine. I don't expect you fanboys to understand me. I just expect you to respect my opinion that there WERE better choices out there you have never heard of. I doubt anyone even read for this part. Weaving’s had it probably a year plus. Fuck you, Hollywood. You have failed me for the last time. (Happy Star Wars day, tards)

    by theseeker7

If I hadn't of known ahead of time that Hugo voiced Megatron in Transformers, I would've never known. Seriously, they ran his voice work through so much processing for the finale result, he was totally unrecognizable, I do'nt understand the point of why they bothered to hire him. It could've been Joe Shmo.

    by vikkimarsdale

Iron Man or Thor? Are Ant-man and the Wasp tied for fourth place? Or fifth, after the Hulk? I think Hulk would actually be the sixth Avenger since he joined last and quit first. In the comics, though Captain America was the Sixth Avenger, Hawkeye was Seventh and then Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch were tied for Eighth.
Of course that's just the Marvel Avengers, not the bogus Ultimates version.

In the British version, I think Emma Peel was the fourth Avenger. Depending on how many partners Steed had before Pussy Galore.

Apparently he hasn't seen any of the Transformers films, though...maybe he's a smarter man than the rest of us.Frank Langella kicked ass as Skeletor, btw. No joke. If Weaving puts in that kind of performance we could be in for a treat. It's an abject lesson in how to take what in theory is a cheesy role in a z-grade genre pic and just run with it without pretension, ironically elevating the material. Fuck pretentious actors who think genre movies are beneath them and simply a 'paycheck'.

  • Julian McMahon is one lazy douche bag actor who took a shit on Doctor Doom when he played the part in the Fantastic Four movies. Dr. Doom didn't even have an accent. McMahon probably said to himself, “Even though my European accent has gone away from doing American parts, I'm still European, so I don't have to come up with any kind of accent.” HE PHONED IN HIS PERFORMANCE. What a lazy asshole! He basically played himself with squinting eyes to portray evil, what a fucking joke. A ten year old kid in a play has more range than that asshole. Studio Execs, don't ever hire Julian McMahon since he took a shit on a character that should have been as cool as Freddy Kruger or Darth Vader. I just saw the behind the scenes of the Fantastic Four DVD when Stan Lee said he was the only actor who didn't call him right after he was cast then Julian McMahon replied and said, “Well, I'm a busy man.” You are not a busy man, you are a lazy second rate actor who belongs in b-movies. Doctor Doom would have been played well by a serious and real actor like Hugo Weaving. Weaving would have created an entirely new character with dimension for Doctor Doom and made the character cool. We all know he will do the part of the Red Skull justice. Julian McMahon is on a level of a Baywatch actor.

Ironman: The Second Avenger, Thor: The Third Avenger

    by chuck_chuckwalla

Or wouldn't Thor be the FIRST since he's an ancient Norse God? Sure, he didn't know at the time he would become an Avenger but then again there were no Avengers in WWII either. So, right there, things get fuzzy at this point. Maybe I can clear this up. So, if Thor is really first then that would make Cap, SECOND. But technically if Cap has been frozen all this time, he's out of the loop. So, we reorganize ... in movie continuity Iron Man should be FIRST, right? Because he was the first one approached about forming a team by Nick Fury. So, that makes Cap the THIRD Avenger because Thor is coming out before Cap. No, wait! Fuck! The Incredible Hulk came out a month or so after Iron Man that same summer, so technically Iron Man is SECOND, Cap is FORTH. Because remember that scene where Tony Stark is talking to General Thunderbolt Ross about trying to recruit The Incredible Hulk for a team? Or maybe Hulk is FIRST if you count Ang Lee's Hulk, since Incredible Hulk was a loosely based part-two of that piece of shit. Now, this is getting complicated. See, how fucked up that 'First Avenger' tag line is? Is Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch or Giant Man in this? They easy, they last.

I would love to find it . This would make a great movie...just can't remember what it was called ... ;(

    Blackflowerx it's...

    by thecomedian

"The Adventures of Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty". One of the best "year one" type origin stories ever done. They had the whole process where Steve wasn't the only Super Soldier candidate with the Jesse Owens guy, the Jewish guy and the comic relief fat racist young Archie Bunker guy competing with him. They had Bucky as the wise-ass, skirt chasing, cigarette smoking sidekick with no costume. The perfect creepy nazi movie serial villains you mentioned, the poison gas guy, the electric guy, the knife guy ad the KKK looking dude who turned out to be Steve's girlfriend the whole time. Plus the Red Skull. I hope somebody @ Marvel puts this comic in Joss and Johnson's hands even though the healthy mix of this kind of origin and a more realist WWII film is probably what their gonna go for. Loved that comic though.

    Hmm

    by donniedorko

Is he going to sign Harrys "Machete" or give decorating advice? Anyway, I think Captain America should fight the evil and mad General North Korea and being sponsored by Major Africa who is always oweing money to the Captain.

To 99% of non-comics fans, The Avengers = Emma Peel

    by dead_kate_moss

Or that shitty remake with Jude law or whoever the fuck was in it. So 'The First Avenger' is a fairly decent way of establishing The Avengers movie will be nothing to do with that franchise. Makes sense, yes?

PERFECT CASTING! Those calling for Waltz are DOLTS

    by behemoth

Christoph Waltz as the Red Skull?? Why? Because he played a Nazi already? You spineless, half-bred chimp molesters. How moronic can you get.
Hugu LOOKS the part, first of all. He looks like a talking skull already. And his acting is absolutely stellar. You imbeciles don't think he can pull off a German accent?
Again, complaining, joyless pieces of taint paste. Eff youse all. Weaving RULES as Red Skull.

I'm sure Weaving will do great, but...

    by inkingeekx

I probably still won't see this movie, even tho I love cap; I CANT stand chris Evans. I just don't think he'll be serious enough to pull this off. Caps a serious guy, and Evans is always a smartass. Vi was really rooting for John krasinski or cap...but, I digress. Weaving is like Walkin- he can make anything watchable
