Aguirre Jr. gawks at FIGHT CLUB

Published at:  Oct 06, 1999 2:19:19 AM CDT

Alright the seed of the long departed Aguirre has returned blossoming from the bloody wound of cinema known as FIGHT CLUB. A film that kicks film's ass according to everything I've heard. NEXT Friday can't come quick enough... by next Tuesday that... that... evil Genius Moriarty will have seen it twice... I hate that guy, don't you? Anyway... Here is Aguirre with a non-spoiler badass look at FIGHT CLUB... a movie that if it is one ounce less than it is being sold... if my theater doesn't erupt into a senseless battle of fistacuffs... I'll be enraged and burst into an impromptu battle of fistacuffs... Come onnnnn get here already!

Harry,

Oh my, where to begin after seeing the absolutely fucking amazing Fight
Club, starring brad pitt and Edward Norton, and most notably, directed
by David "Im a God" Fincher. About 2/3 of the way through the movie, I
thought "geez, this movie is revoluting the whole damn industry." It
is so in-your-face that you feel like you are the one getting the shit
kicked out of. The way its presented, the intensity all of the actors
perform at, this is a movie no one will forget for a very long time,
and it would take a great movie to beat it out for my best picture of
the year vote (so i said that about American Beauty before, but Fight
Club was up to that challenge.) Time to break it down:

Acting: Edward Norton is just about the best actor on the planet now,
he will be a mega star some day and will win piles of Oscars. For the
thirsdtime (Primal Fear, American history X), his character goes
through a suden trasformation that makes you think entirely
differently about him. He is so good at playing that the exactly right
way. This is in his upper echelon in terms of performances (though all
are really),but American history X is his best probably. As good as
eddy is, Brad Pitt is better. What enrgy, intensity, and pure great
acting. He dominates each scene he is in. Wow is all I have to say,
and I stil can't believe how he slept walked through Meet Joe Black
after he reinforces his true skill here. Helene Bonham Carter is good,
and shes hot, really leaves an impression in a role that could have
gone by the way side. meatloaf is really funny too as a big fat guy.

Overall: A, ...easily.

Directing: David Fincher has a flare for style that is simply
unmatched. The movie looks great despite its darkness and there are so
many clever shots in the movie its sick. Norton's desciption of his
condo is enhanced so much with Fincher's visual aides (youll
understand if you see the movie). The best part of his direction
though is that it looks like evryone really is getting punched, kicked
or killed. Thats because of the sound, look, and actors working
together for such a complete sensory experience. Its not easy to
watch, but how many great movies really are? You're in the movie from
the opening credits, no movie has captured me this way n a long time.

Overall: A++++++++ Give the man an Oscar (for his editing too, which
is razor sharp).

Writing: So, there are a few holes at the end probably, and you will
be reminded of The Sixth Sense at one point, but the story unfolds at
a great clip, never do you get bored in the whole 2 hrs. and 15
minutes. The diretcting and the acting ahve a higher energy level, bu
the sript is obvisiouly good enough to make one hell of a movie.

Overall: A-

Fight Club is more than seeing a movie, its an experience, it sucks
you in and keeps you there the entire time. Youve never seen as much
graphic detail when it comes to fighting and blood, but thats all part
of making sure all of your senses get soemthing out of it. Its a rare
movie that you know will change how movies are made. Not only is it
excelently crafted, but its cool as hell.

Go and see this movie if you haven't yet Harry..

Aguire jr.

    Read the book

    by rolande

It's not all about fights, guys. The book veers way off the track toward anarchy, nihilism, self-destruction. Don't think you're going to see Bloodsport IV or anything. Great concept, though, don't get me wrong. And seeing some heads get busted up (man, Angelface gets splattered) is always appealing. The end, though, will leave many scratching their head, if it follows the book. Beats Superstar though!

    FIGHT CLUB!!

    by jessecuster

This movie has everything a great film should have. It's also the best book I've read this decade, check it out. It's also the best soundtrack I've heard in a VERY LONG time, buy it.

By the way, does anyone know where I can pick up one of those groovy promo bars of soap? I've got an empty glass case I want to turn into an ode to all things violent and cool.

    Re-editing ?

    by walter burns

It was reported over here in the UK in one of the papers that the film had been sent back for 'extensive re-editing' after it's Venice showing. The whole tenor of the article was very anti Fight Club (a campaign has already started trying to get it refused certification - like they tried with 'Crash'), but I wondered if there was any truth in the 'extensive re-editing'.

    And it's "fisticuffs"

    by loki trickster

But I'd rather that Harry get the review out there as fast as possible without having to look up every little word...especially if it's a review of "The Fight Club". I can't wait to see a movie that's a nihilistic as this movie is supposed to be (one reviewer was calling "Anti-God"...as if that was a fatal flaw of a movie to have an opinion different from him). This next week is going to be exceptionally good to me: "American Beauty" this Friday (they haven't released it to theaters around me yet...commie bastards), and "Fight Club" the next...and "Three Kings" last week...okay, so there's nothing original in this post...sue me. Actually, Harry, I have to ask if we get the greenlight for massive vicious fights if we're talking about "Fight Club"? Since talking about a movie about sex gives us the go-ahead to talk about ass-fucking, does talking about "Fight Club" give us permission to trash each other? -Loki

    about the re-editing...

    by loki trickster

I believe there was an article on here about a week ago that quoted Edward Norton saying they only did a little re-editing, that tightened up a couple of the fight sequences, and that nothing major had been cut. Go to the archives; it's the article on October 4th. It talks about how they had to cut a little down from the "arsonist's handbook" scene, and a little from where Norton beats up Jared Leto's character, and that's it. -Loki

Damn you all with your glowing reviews!

    by cineman

Harry is right. This movie has been so built up for me that if it isn't the best movie of the decade I will be disappointed. Its pretty sad but its true and I can't help it. All the elements came together with this one. Fincher is THE best director, Norton is one of my fave actors, and the story is just incredible. Pitt and Bonham Carter are also great actors with good material. Add to that a touch up by Andrew Kevin Walker and you have the highest expectations I could possibly have for a movie. It really sucks.
