It's not that Conan got cancelled cause of bad ratings (which is true, his ratings weren't that good), it's that if Leno had any integrity he wouldn't be clawing to get back at his old spot the first chance he could get. It's not the cancellation that is the problem (though it's a bummer), it's the fact that Jay willingly took back the job he publicly handed over to Conan in good faith, and went along with NBC's decision to throw Conan out of a job when he SHOULD have realized that the entire problem was a result of bad decision-making on NBC's part, and that the right thing to do would be to not go along with any of it.

No, that is not a fact. The FACT is that LENO's awful ratings are what caused the whole mess in the first place. HIS prime time show was the ONLY show the affiliates had a problem with. Because NBC couldn't let him go (they'd have to pay him way more in fuck off money than they did Conan) they sacrificed Conan. Conan's ratings, bad though they might have been (for a while), were NEVER the issue. That is why Conan's fans are rightfully upset with NBC.

The reason Conan's fans are rightfully upset with LENO is that the asshole was in the position to tell NBC "No, I don't wanna stab my ol' friend Coco in the back like this - make me another offer or pay up!" but didn't, instead he went right along with the backstabbing. Then the smug prick has the balls to try and make it sound like Conan was the reason for the mess, and you and his fans buy into his BS because you want to.

I agree. Lately, I've gotten really sick and tired of Herc's constant Jay Leno bashing, but watching this, I'm actually hoping Herc comes on with another Leno bashing article in a few minutes here. Jay is recycling bits and jokes from his show. Jokes that weren't funny the first time. It's painful to watch.

Conan was doing okay in the ratings. Maybe not great, but Okay. His ratings only tanked after Leno's show started, and dragged down the ratings of almost every other show around it. If NBC hadn't caved to Leno's bitching and whining in the first place, none of this would have happened.

Jay turned the Tonight Show into a hammy piece of crap that old people fall asleep to. Conan needed to be freed from a predecessor to really shine. Conan didn't lose "The Tonight Show"

    by jawsfan

As far as many of us are concerned, the true "Tonight Show" was any incarnation of that show with Steve Allen, Jack Parr, or Johnny Carson. When Leno was on board, it was the "Jay Leno Cocksucking Extravaganza". There was no "Tonight Show" for Conan to inherit in the first place because Leno killed it years ago and replaced it with the garbage-laden snooze-fest it had become. "The Arsenio Hall Show" was funnier. Conan said he was worried that moving the show to 12:05 would sully the reputation of "The Tonight Show". There was no reputation left to sully. Conan inherited damaged goods. He inherited "The Jay Leno Show". Best thing that ever happened to him was getting away from that debacle. History will record that "The Tonight Show" died an ugly death with Leno. Conan should do what Letterman did when he found out "The Tonight Show" wouldn't be in his future -- he went back to doing his own thing and carving out his own legacy.

excuses Leno for bullying Conan out of his show? Well hell, if that's the case, why stop at Tonight Show? I'm sure leno gets better ratings than many shows on tv now, why not have Heroes starring Jay Leno, or even Chuck starring Jay Leno? Hell any show that not rating so well should just be handed over to Jay Leno, after all it is his world and we are just passengers along for the ride right?

  • craig ferguson is self-deprecatingly goofy-funny. i enjoy people who don't take themselves too seriously and seem to be having fun. conan is utterly self-conscious, but has a great, though sometimes ascerbic, wit that carries him through it. leno is a comedy-by-the-numbers guy. he knows the beats, he knows where the joke is in a topic, he just shits all over the material with his intentional avoidance of a definitive viewpoint. also, the "conan couldn't draw a larger audience" thing is bullshit. his problem is that he wasn't allowed to develop a tonight show audience. i think it's a huge underestimation of the late night audience to say that jay is the only person that can be a major draw in that timeslot.

    Question

    by kraven morehead

I have no real feeling when it comes to George Lopez but now his show will be bumped back an hour to make room for Conan. In it's own way isn't what Jay is doing to George what Jay did to Conan . . . or does it not count because it's TBS?

    Reply to Talkback

  • The first 16 minutes are President Obama, and he's really funny. Leno starts in at 17:00, and watch how his first few jokes bomb completely without any laughter. I didn't watch the rest of his performance...since Leno is comedic cancer, but I've heard the rest sucked, too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYsGwLWqWI4

simply amazing. I didn't get him at first. Then, I gave him a chance and was glad I did.

He exudes a natural humor and wit and can talk about nothing and still manage to entertain. He is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. And he's also not afraid to take the show on a serious note and talk about things that mean something. I suggest visiting YouTube for some of his best stuff.

I'm also a huge Conan and Letterman fan. The only person in late night I really don't like is Jay Leno who is unfunny (on the show, anyway), unoriginal, and simply unwatchable.

    by bizarrojerry

I think this all started when NBC decided they didn't want to lose Conan so they promised him the Tonight Show years in advance but still wanted to keep Leno happy and not just can him. They were trying to have their cake and eat it to, to use a horribly tired cliche.

    Conan made a great point...

    by sorbo1980

...in the interview about the real reason for the break-up. Basically, he said that it would cost more to buy out Leno than to buy out Conan. That's what it came down to. That's not to say he still wasn't hurt by the whole thing, but the ratings talk disparaging Conan seemed like a smokescreen for the real reasons for him leaving: the buy-out costs.

    by dave i

After that interview, he was about as classy, yet obviously still hurt by it, as he could be. OBVIOUSLY he would have handled it classier than Leno did had the situations been reversed, because HE DID!I find Conan funnier and more intelligent. Regardless, he is more likable, seems more genuine, and a more personable human being. I wish him nothing but success and happiness. He's already rich, seems to have found himself if you will on his comedy tour, back in work, and has a smokin' hot wife who seems pretty cool and understanding. I think he's already on his way there!-Cheers
