Learn How SMALLVILLE, STARGATE, PARTY DOWN, MIAMI MEDICAL And The Other Friday Shows Are Doing!!

Published at:  Apr 30, 2010 8:47:36 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

* “SGU,” already renewed for season two, fell to a new all-time low last Friday. For those who ask how its ratings compare to "Battlestar Galactica's," I know "Galactica's" were much higher, with its 2009 finale hitting a 1.5 in 18-49.

* "Smallville," already renewed for next season, rebounded to a 1.0. I’m told that local CW affiliates (though not KTLA here in Los Angeles) have been pre-empting it for baseball games.

* “Food Revolution” and already-renewed “Who Do You Think You Are” both hit new all-time lows.

* “Miami Medical” hit a 1.0 following a steep four-week slide. I bet its producers wish it was on the CW. CBS now seems unlikely to announce a renewal at its upfront in less than three weeks.

* “Party Down” isn’t attracting a lot of viewers to Starz. I think “Veronica Mars” mastermind Rob Thomas wrote tonight’s episode.

* “Down” is attracting more than “The Ricky Gervais Show,” which fell behind “The Life and Times of Tim” in 18-49 for the first time.

* Far more people watched the NFL draft than watched the NBA playoff games last Friday, backing up my theory that football is the only sport Americans give a shit about.

    by realpayton34

If the CW were smart, they would move Vampire Diaries to a different night (it's strong enough on it's own that it may boost some of their other struggling shows) and bring back the one-two punch of Smallville and Supernatural on Thursday nights.

That's actually true. It's best episodes have been the last few. The first few were a little on the slow side. But good actors. It just kind of seemed like it wasn't sure what it wanted to be. I still cannot sit through any of the other Stargate shows. Hope this one can maintain it's quality streak. When they landed on the planet of Manitoba or wherever it was supposed to be , I got a short but frightening SGA vibe.

    SGU was alwatys a slow-burn

    by majereuk

It seemed to me from the start that SGU was trying to avoid the Atlantis trap of one day discovering this incredibly advanced thing, and the next day having near-total control of it. Now that they're bedded in and Destiny's not likely to kill them on its own, the ka-ka and the fan can really get down to some meaningful intercourse.
Oh, and come on, Eli's not such a bad guy, surely? :)

Party Down drew just 126,000 viewers last Friday.

    by pennsydeux

And that was a 10,000 viewer *increase*, per the Hollywood Reporter from last year's opener. An 0.1/0 in the demo. That's sad squared. But Damages had a couple episodes that had the goose-egg in 18-49, too.

    SGU past the tipping point

    by jbs9200

SGU has obviously gone past the tipping point, it is all downhill to cancellation from here.
Anyone who was willing to give it a chance did so, and most didn't like what they saw. Now the show is going to have to live off its die-hards.
That show has gotten marginally better and it isn't a _bad_ show, just not a compelling or interesting show. You kind of watch it because you have nothing better to do.
Early next season they will announce they have not renewed it for a 3rd. Just like LoTS (which BTW I had just decided I would watch to end fo the season and no more, the same day the cancellation announcement was made.)
The Syphilis network made a huge mistake cancelling SGA for SGU.

    by famouseccles

but I don't mean I don't like any of the characters, but they aren't loveable like Shepard or McKay - if you follow me. Shepard is a classic hero type. In SGU, like in real life, you can like them one minute. Then suddenly you see they are being a prick.

    Wasn't too bad.

    by gotilk

Tonight's episode was not as good as the last few, in my opinion. They've dragged out a single "stuck without a chance of rescue" plot FAR too long this time and it's just getting annoying now. This had better lead to something interesting. They seem to have SO many opportunities to make it something better, and then they fall back to the comfort of the premise and leave it alone. I was wrong about "Sgt Black Anger Syndrome" though. They're starting to flesh him out a bit, even though they appear to be clinging to the stereotype pretty tightly. He's black, so of course he has an abusive father in his past and that explains why he flies off the handle and seems to want to kick everyone's ass just for speaking in full sentences. But at least they're giving a bit of that back story now. No matter how predictable it is. He used to be such a gentle, caring boy. Now society has made him an angry man. What a new concept. The show needs to keep fleshing out characters and letting them develop, but I really hope they lose some of the soapier elements soon. And what's with the love for the other shows? They portrayed many of the military elements pretty unrealistically annoying. Like middle management at retail. And with all the predictable smart-ass, jokey, badly written dialogue for McGuyver... it was just too much for me. Example:Character1: We're waiting for him to download his consciousness from the ship's computer into a new body.SpaceMcGuyver: Oh, well THAT never gets old.*groan*Something about people like that are just generally unappealing to me. At least with this show, in spite of the chubby guy stereotypically being a quoter of Star Wars and Star Trek, we get very little of that annoying banter that must just seem SO funny in the writer's room.

I actually like SGU, at least those episodes thus far that comprise the current half-season. It has gotten better, and its not falling into a blank-of-the-week formula. This is what Voyager should have been. Both my gf and I look forward to the new eps now, which is *not* something that we did with SGA's later seasons. Or Caprica.

Bravo to the SGU show runners and writers for finally making a compelling series.

    by flandersbum

C'mon, I have cable and never heard of the show. Reason #4312 that I half the cable stations out there need to go away...can't wait for the ala cart system to go into place when people actually select the individual stations they want to pay for instead of being forced to buy 100 stations they never watch. Half the networks would disapear overnight, it would be great.

Chloe and tess are trapped in the watchtower. High ceiling, probably over 50,000 cubic feet of air. And the air runs out in minutes? Then instead of placing the cooling cylander next to the door to ensure accuracy, Chloe tosses it...dramatic effect but needless. And then Clark palm-slaps Zod, as if a super-powered Zod is fragile. The Clone Wars - Smallville ...

    by gotilk

Out of all the stuff I DVR'd, The Clone Wars 1 hr finale was the most entertaining. Smallville wasn't bad, fun episode with some chilling moments, like Zod listening to his unborn child's heart stop beating. Yeesh. But the Clone Wars finale? Better, more entertaining than all the prequel films combined. Felt like there were real stakes, the development of Boba Fett didn't feel like a midichlorian moment at all, R-2 has his personality back.. and it was packed with action, humor and great character moments. I have not been keeping up with the show. Now I'll have to go back and see if the rest of the season was as good, as well as season 1, which I caught only a few of and wasn't that impressed with.

and once the writers do season 2, we ll will be in for an epic adventure like no other. you guys should give these writers more credit they understand very well what makes a good sci fi show (not BSG horseshit). as for the talkbackers here mentioning me in oh but subtle ways: FUCK YOU COCKMOUTH! what i did i had to do! i couldnt stand to see society being dumbed down by this BSG crap!

SGU will get fantastic rating when they play it on Tuesdays, i guarantee it. For a moment there I thought we were in trouble!

    Big Jim- coolants

    by powerring

On an episode of the Mythbusters, they demonstrated that to freeze something solid enough to shatter (especially since that huge door was thick metal) that a HUGE quantity of liquid nitrogen was needed. But since that coolant was probably a meteor rock derivative (as are all things technical on SV) then I will give that part a pass. But logically, there would have been a big possibility of wasting it by tossing it and shooting it. In fact, the bullet rupture could have cause the liquid to drain out the wrong side toward Tess, not the door. But it's only TV....and even though they swiped a pulp fiction idea(Chloe is suddenly a medical expert) parts of the show weren't bad. Now about the fact that everyone flies except Clark...

I seriously doubt that was the last we'll be seeing of Checkmate. We didn't see Waller and her little henchman die. Why would they introduce such a cool character and then kill her off like that? Zod destroyed their castle, but they'll be back. Plus, next week they're revealing who the Red Queen is. Anyway, I thought it was a very solid episode. I don't know how plausible a lot of that was, but it was fun to watch.

as long as Red Queen isn't Lana...

    by br1947

Rumor is Martha Kent, but I hope not... I'm hoping for someone new to setup as the arch enemy for next season.

  • way to stack your chips there, Herc!I really didn't expect to like SGU - the premise reminded me too much of Voyager which sucked dogs balls and I had already stopped watching Atlantis because they had hit 11 on the sucktacular scale and the seasonal formula they followed really bothered the shit out of meso when my friend gave me the first 7 or so episodes and I didn't have anything better to do and finally put them on, I was actually quite pleasantly surprised to see a show that was not Voyager or even SG:anything-you've-seen-before - if anything I got a sort of Rendezvous with Rama kind of vibe from itit's not perfect - the soundtrack moments annoy the shit out of me and I was really disappointed when Aliens made an appearance - tho it was kinda funny when they turned out to be refugees from Abe's Oddworldbut it's still been fairly consistently good and this last episode was GREAT! So incredibly tense, even tho I knew in the back of my mind they would never go there - AND THEY WENT THERE!it's easily the best of the genre that's out right now - tho I admit that's not really saying muchI'm glad to hear they got a second season - I really really hope the writers RESIST the urging of fans of the other shows - ATLANTIS IN PARTICULAR - to make it more like those showskeep it differentkeep it unique(and go easy on the musical montages - I DO NOT want to be watching The OC in space!)

tess and chloe get trapped in the watchtower. that's a really dumb security design by chloe. and now all her data is lost because a coolant is unplugged for a few minutes? wow ... staggering

the zod moments were good and all the kandorians flying off leaving superboy looking helpless and impotent ... that's hilarious.

shouldn't we be rooting for our hero? a bit tired of the passive superboy..

The first ep of Gravity was shit but...

    by andy_dufresne

The second was pretty strong. It's growing on me. The first two episodes of Gravity and Party Down have been shown a day early on Directv's channel 101. I freakin love that channel.

"Now about the fact that everyone flies except Clark..."

    by big jim

I think it was the last scene, when all the Kandorians and Zod fly away, leaving Clark looking up and watching them go. I wondered if Clark's inner monologue was something like "WTF, why can't I do that?".

Especially since they all can fly

    by big jim

because they came into contact with his blood, or Zod's Clark-infected blood. It'd be like if I was just beginning to study Latin while drinking orange juice. Buddy comes along and drinks my juice, backwash and all, and suddenly become fluent in Latin.

    all fly

    by powerring

Exactly. Zod and the rest got IMMEDIATE flight and IMMEDIATE command of thier powers (like hearing, heat vision) that took Clark a long time to discover and master. These plot holes only exacerbate the extremely annoying idea that Clark can't fly...and it's somehow psychological. Early in the series...fear of heights. How does someone who knows he is indestructable have a fear of falling? Is he afraid he might get his clothes ruffled on the way down?

You guys don't watch smallville enough

    by mr_satan

Kandorians and the rest of the Kryptonians have been to earth and other planets before. They are travelers. They already no how to fly because they've used the powers before. That's why Supergirl could fly, and his uncle and mother and father. Clark has some stupid mental block, that Jor-El was training him to get over. And Spoiler Alert: The Red Queen is Martha Kent.

    Clark flying

    by my pretty pony

It's exactly right that the reason Clark can't fly and the other Kryptonians can is because they're all experienced, while he isn't. He was raised as a human and had to figure out his powers as he went along. Supergirl grew up on Krypton and the other Kryptonians that are currently on the show are clones of the ones that existed on Krypton. They were all raised in a very different culture and have always embraced their Kryptonian nature, while Clark still thinks of himself as a human. It's not a plot hole that they can fly, even though he can't. I don't blame them for saving that moment until the final season. The show is about Clark Kent's journey to becoming Superman. Once he wears the cape and starts flying, he's already Superman.
