(These Were) Pics From The Filming Of The Coen's TRUE GRIT!!

Published at:  Apr 30, 2010 3:22:39 PM CDT

Merrick here...

Rooster Cockburn sent in some pics nabbed from the filming of Joel & Ethan Coen's TRUE GRIT adaptation in a small town outside of Austin. No pics of Flynn/Dude wearing a cowboy hat & an eye patch yet - we're waiting for that with baited breath. Although, I guess we got a sense of the hat part in CRAZY HEART...

I believe we're loking at Joel Coen in the fourth image (black shirt & cowboy hat - is that him?), and Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie Ross in the sixth image (she's the girl who drafts Rooster Cogburn to go out and find the asshole who killed her daddy).

IMAGES REMOVED!!!

The film, which is a re-adaptation of Charles Portis' novel (HERE) more than a remake of the John Wayne film from 1969 - should be in theaters 'round Christmas.

Seriously, it's got to stop. Remaking Death At A Funeral was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I love the Coen's, but I expect better from them. Please people, think of some new ideas or take some ideas that are in print and put them onto the big screen.

    by sulla

The Coen Brothers have this under control, it will be awesome, and yes I'm a huge fan of the John Wayne adaptation as well. When something is based on a novel, it isn't considered a remake if it's made more than once into a movie. This is a win win, at the end of the day we will have TWO great versions of True Grit to enjoy. ;)

Not that good, folks. And I'm old. It was a hit, definitely, and Wayne is great fun (hell, so is Kim Darby) but if you watch it now it doesn't hold up that well. I hate remakes 99% of the time - to the poster above, the Denzel Washington versions of MANCHURIAN and PELHAM were both complete pieces of shit - but in this case, with the Coens, and Bridges in that role, I'm excited.

whether you like it or not, is such an iconic classic movie that the Coen's are going to have an uphill battle to separate themselves from it. I look forward to the direction that they take but somehow doubt that it will be a true, direct adaptation of the the source material. I mean, it's the Coen's. Their reputation precedes them. I am expecting a weirdo western. And just for good measure, "Rabble".

    by eustisclay

...look the Fly and The Thing were good remakes. I get tired of this shit of reboot and reimagining. Do you think by calling it a reimaginning that will automatically make it better? Just call it a remake and do a good job. Wasn't crazy about this when I first heard about it, but fuck it. There are so few westerns made anymore and even fewer good ones, so I've come to terms with it. But I watched the first one last year(and I think it does hold up) then read the book(which I never had before). The Wayne version is VERY faithful to the novel, I don't know what some of you are talking about. I have seen very few films as faithful to the original source as that. The endings a little different but otherwise, pretty goddamn close.

Maybe you're right. I watched a lot of it a while back and was struck by how staid and old-studio it felt. But I didn't watch it start to finish, so maybe I should do that before I shoot my mouth off. I know the "fill your hands" scene is pretty damn classic. Have you ever seen THE COWBOYS though? That holds up beautifully and is just amazing, probably my all-time favorite Western. Just the John Williams score alone...
