Brief bit on FIGHT CLUB

Published at:  Oct 04, 1999 8:57:20 AM CDT

Man... I wanna see FIGHT CLUB... This is a flick that I do believe everyone I've talked to is buzzing about. Be it Johnny Wad at the Record Convention... or Quint swagging his deck... or Tom Joad whilst forking over the filth at work... Sigh... Soon enough it will arrive. Soon. It's good to hear the film managed to get through MPAA, but then again.. the MPAA is more about tangible things... number of thrusts in bed, degrees of physical violence, a series of strange rules and regulations... BUT... take a film with ideas 10 times more pervasive... well... they'll let it slip through (thank god)...

Harry,

I have never wrote before due to lack of anything useful to say. This may
have already been covered on the site somewhere, but hopefully it's a new
bit of info.

Edward Norton came to Yale University last night (10/3) with a preview of
Fight Club. The movie is more than great. But, point is, it's got an R
rating. At the Q & A I asked Norton about whether there had been any real
trouble getting that rating, and whether there had been any major artistic
sacrifices. He said, in effect, that there were really only 2 points of
issue the MPAA had. One was that they didn't want the fim to become a sort
of "arsonist's handbook," what with all the discussion of creating home made
explosives and whatnot. The second was that there were "A few nips and
tucks" made in the scene where Edward Norton's character beats up the
Angelface character (played by Jared Leto.)

The movie impresses: The blood and gore are handled in an incredibly real
fashion, making it much more disturbing to witness than in most other
movies. And content-wise it challenges. There are issues brought forth which
are very subversive, and I can see why the MPAA might have trouble with the
film, since essentially the charismatic lead character rallies forces around
himself in order to (do something that you'll have to see the film to find out about).

That's all. Hope it is useful.

Ed Norton is REALLY good. I can't wait to see him beat the living daylights of Brad Pitt. This is gonna be dark, cruel and lovely one hell of a movie.

BTW: I saw Eyes Wide Shut last night and some loco sat behind me !chewing! popsicles. I friggin hate that. By for now.

I live in Sweden. It's getting dark.

    Those Previews

    by criticlysm

Does anyone know if the previews for fight club will surface? Not the trailers, but the ones with Just Ed NOrton talking about not letting anyone touch your bathing suit area. And the Brad Pitt one talking about urine being sterile and drinkable (what's the proper word for that?)POTABLE! got it. Anyway, it would be a shame if those never got to see the light of day, studio leaks where are you?

First Rule of Fight Club *very small spoilers*

    by devils halo

Is a basic rule, do not talk about it. I saw a press screening of it two weeks ago. I cannot wait to see it again! As for the mentioned parts of the movie, there is enough brutality in the scene of Norton kicking the living shit out of Leto to make it effective the way it is. As for the whole making of explosives with common household products, I feel that was ok where it stood and vague enough to get passed over. If anything would be more impressionistic on movie goers - and unfortunately I already forsee this coming - it's a group that takes the fighting into real life. Brad Pitt gives his early troops the homework assignment of just going out and starting a fight, with anyone, and losing (to know, understand, and better appreciate what living is). Sorry Harry, for not giving you a review under one of my many psuedonyms, but I will not and cannot do this film any justice in mere words, this is a truly visual masterpiece. Pitt's performance goes beyond his roles in Se7en and 12 Monkeys. And Norton, he just rules. If you need something to compare this film to, think of American Beauty on acid, Spacey's character so far gone that his imagination is limitless as to how dark and extreme he can be. And a word about *spoilers* since we kind of touch on the subject. 1) Shame on Pat Summerall and AccessHollywood on giving away clues of the ending of Fight Club, what kind of bullshit reporting was that on national TV to give away the ending. 2) The Bone Collector trailer basically gives you the killer in his few voice over comments to Denzel, what kind of bullshit is that Universal? Why do you give it all up in the trailer? Again, Harry, sorry for not giving you a review, but this movie doesn't deserve a half ass, hack review from me. The movie rocks! plain and simple... I'll be in line again to see it in two weeks. I love the direction Fincher is going with his films.

Those movie previews are on www.fight-club.com. God, I can't wait to see this movie. Why can't they just open it this week damn it? I don't know anyone who wants to see Random Hearts or Superstar. The commercials alone make me cringe.

    Fight Club Websites

    by the interloper

    Hey,
To the guy who talked about the Access Hollywood thing: when was that on? Was it this week sometime? Because I know that Access said they'd be having constant coverage on Fight Club. I saw the interview they had with Pitt and Norton last week, but since then, I haven't kept up with the show.
Also, to anyone interested in a new web page dedicated to Fight Club as well as it's author, visit it at http://members.xoom.com/intrloper9/PalahniukMain.htm
you'll fine a cool Fight Club section there.
