‘He Is Responsible For So Much Evil!!’ Thursday Brings The Big Musical Episode Of FRINGE!!

Published at:  Apr 29, 2010 1:17:48 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Apparently today is both the first day of May sweeps and the first day of Fox Rocks Week:

While Walter deals with some very upsetting news, he tells Olivia's niece, Ella (guest star Lily Pilblad), a fairy tale that includes musical performances by Olivia and Agent Broyles. Guest Cast: Ari Graynor as Rachel Dunham; Michael Cerveris as September; Lily Pilblad as Ella; Ryan McDonald as Brandon.

Expect Observer warbling. Michael Cerveris, who first rose to fame as a regular during the final season of the “Fame” TV series, has starred in numerous Broadway musicals, playing the title roles in both “Tommy” and “Sweeney Todd.”

9 p.m. Thursday. Fox.

    by hst666

Walternate probably does want to retrieve his son, and may be an underlying motivation for Walternate and be responsible for any enmity he has for Walter and our side, but I doubt that's the whole reason. We also know there has been problems on the other side, which may be blamed on crossing over. The invading cyborg's appear to be military and I doubt the other side's USA would be spending resources on one man's quest/vendetta. More likely, there's a larger plan.

    no doubt it's Walternate related

    by maniaq

seems like he was benevolent enough when he was making a cure for his ill son, but if both Walters worked for their respective militaries... well one military was already far more advanced technologically than the other - although it seems they didn't have the right people working on applied multiverse theory and meechanics on their side...of course that all changed the night his (admittedly dying) son was snatched from him by his doppelganger so there is little doubt Walternate has since made it his life's work to bridge the gap between worldsremember he probably didn't languish in a mental hospital for over a decade over thereconsidering our "benevolent" Walter had already conceived of and conducted some rather questionable experiments on children, what do you suppose a much more driven "malevolent" version might have conceived of, since?yes of course the military are involved-and yes of course Walternate is too...I just want to know what happened to the alternate William Bell, since he's apparently been replaced by our one??

I really like Fringe and look forward to every new episode to see what happens to the characters and to see the story arc unfold but episodes like this just ruins it for me completely. Since I won't be watching this I'll probably miss some things that have to do with the story arc and character development and therefore I'll probably just stop watching this show altogether.

Same thing with the Buffy musical... every week I looked forward to a new episode and then the musical aired and all I could think of was that "this storyline would be great in a regular episode instead of all this singing crap"

    musical by force

    by bouncy x

it seems a number of Fox shows are doing musical episodes this week, so its not like they are doing something they felt could be neat, they're doing it because the network made them. that can't bode too well for the final product. as for Xena, while i loved the first i didnt like the 2nd musical. mainly because there was no reason or need, it was them literally just singing for no reason (like actual musicals) and it was all or mostly covers. the first musical was all original songs and had the excuse of them being in another dimension type thing plus it furthered the season's plot. the 2nd felt like "hey the first did well, lets make another".

    by real deal

This is why I love this show! This show will try anything! This is why I tune in. Because it'sa different. Because it doesn't always give you what you think you're going to get. After the heavy stuff from last week it's ok to take a week off before the final buildup for the season. Yes FOX is having all it's shows do musical episodes this week but that doesn't mean this won't be the best. I really don't see anything wrong with this ( yes I saw the Buffy episode this is clearly different ).

    by thegoldbergv

where they repeat what you've said over and over until they are actually PRE-EMPTING what you say? They should totally do a harmonised version of that in this episode. Broyles could do the low bit, September the high bit.

BTW, not sure how any Buffy fan could NOT like their musical episode. Its pretty much perfect.

    by mecps

the Buffy musical episode is that it measurably advanced that season's plot (the reveal that Buffy's friends had actually yanked her out of heaven (not hell) was the biggest reveal, but there were others). It wasn't just a "gimmick" episode. While this Fringe epi may just be an interlude before the final episodes, don't be surprised if key plot points are moved forward tonight.

Watching that preview I get the feeling that the showrunners planned to do a 50s detective/film noir theme from the get go and probably added a few musical numbers to appease the suits at FOX. I really don't care since one of the musical numbers is being performed by Astrid. :)

I actually prefer Lost skipping new episode this week to this garbage fromFring. I mean, at least with Lost they aren't making me waste an hour of my life on an episode that won't advance the plot (in contrast to most other weeks). Not so quick to dismiss this week's episode

    by monkey_tamer

I know a lot of people are writing off this week's show as a sweeps stunt (and it may be), but I'm not so sure it won't advance the main plot at the same time. There was going to have to be an episode where Olivia searched for and confronted Peter about the truth bomb that got dropped on him. I would prefer it was something inventive like this than a run-of-the-mill episode. Ever since it has returned from hiatus, this show has been firing on all cylinders. I'm willing to cut the creators and writers some slack and see what they come up with tonight. Though it is a little silly I must admit that the promo had me smiling and any excuse that lets Anna Trov dress up to her potential hotness gets a look from me. It may not live up to the last few episodes, but I doubt it is going to be horrible (and what else am I going to watch... CSI, Gray's Anatomy... No thanks). Anything that takes place in Walter's mind has got to be good for a laugh or two.

This Show Has Been Coming Into It's Own Lately

    by real deal

One show that is less serious is ok in the mix. It's not like there's going to be a month before the next one. Some people just don't have a sense of humor. As far as the Buffy comparisons that wasn't 40's detective noir. I'm really looking forward to this. Some of the best Xfiles episodes were things that didn't further the main arc but were off the beaten path. However back then there weren't so many internet forums with fan boys ( trying to sound controversial ) with no patience.

Loved this episode for the TwisterCow, Walter stealing food from the kid cause of a massive munchies crave, opening credits to 'Roundabout' by one of the greatest bands ever (YES), non-sequiter of cow feeding, and of course, Jasika Nicole's voice.

I won’t say it’s a bad episode, but it’s a stretch to call it a musical. I’m pretty sure that Bones had more actual singing. They should have just made it a noir and left it at that, without shoehorning in the 20 second song bytes.

Walter singing Tears For Fears' "Head Over Heels" was great

    by spyguy

And I know this show rips X-FILES off pretty blatantly from time to time, but you have to respect it for opening with Walter getting stoned with a bong.

    Should rename Fringe: Cringe

    by themanwhocan

    Sounds terrable.
I might watch it alone, if at all!I get awfully imbaressed watching out-of nowhere-just-for-the-sake of-it musical episodes with other people. Buffy episode included. im sure im not the only one.

  • Anna Torv can't really sing with her american accent. I wish they'd really done this in B/W. However there were other things in this that were great! I loved the opening! Nimoy's voice. It seems some of the other's can carry a tune. Walter, Walter, Walter! John Nobel just keeps pushing the envelope with his character. I'm wondering how much of the end of the story is going to be reflected in the reality of the storyline.

Again, Jasika Nicole has a slammin........VOICE!

    by sauronthepowerful

    ASTRID CAN SING!

Just saying that we need more Jaskia on this show.....

Surprised no one's commented on the TwisterCow. Walter and Tears for Fears was pretty f-ing hilarious.

At some point I think we REALLY need to start putting Noble in the Emmy discussion.

He is EASILY one of the most proficiant executor's of his craft and CERTAINLY leagues ahead of most of the other garbage that gets passed off as prime-time acting.

    I liked it

    by mojoman69

I liked the Film Noir look, with the obvious anachonisms(cell phones, computers) and the singing wasnt half bad. Plus a nice framing device within Walters story. At least they are trying something different, although it almosr smacked of the Holodeck episonds of ST-TNG.

'Fringe' writers must be HUGE Progressive Rock fans.....

    by sauronthepowerful

Did anybody else notice that last week's episode opened with 'Tom Sawyer' by Rush and that this week's episode opened with 'Roundabout' by YES.

Considerring that these are two of the most famous and seminal examples of progressive rock (which by nature lends itself to the skewery that is 'Fringe') I was wonderring if anyone else sees a possible connection.

Now if we could get some Dream Theater or some Emerson, Lake, and Palmer we'd be really pushing the envelope.

Still think that Noble NEEDS to be in the Emmy conversation.....

    Torv wasn't TRYING to sing...

    by branniganslaw

As with most well-placed songs in a musical, the point of Dunham singing wasn't to provide a showcase for her skills, but to convey emotion and to illustrate mood. On those counts, Torv gave a great performance.

    Beautifully Told but...

    by kingkirby

what was the deal with CG Leonard Nimoy on Nina's monitor? Yikes, that was terrible! But everything else...Walter gettin' high, Torv clearly in her element in 40's styles, Astrid's singing, Broyles' singing...very sweet ending as well. I dug it...so says the King.

    Umm worst episode ever

    by optimus122

Man and I love this show and most week hate anyone here who disses it. But wow what a snorefest. I didn't even read any comments from you all yet and I am shocked to see some positive headers..I would have assumed a blood bath here. Thank God next week looks like a good one because this week was a waste of time.

Torv almost choked me up a bit there.

    by gotilk

Not bad. The episode was surprisingly music-light. I liked it but it did not live up to expectations. The singing corpses were wonderful though.

Torv did look fantastic. Man what I wouldn't do to be able to take a shower with her and sit around and sing songs in our pajamas...bare foot. I love that chick..so hot.

And nobody salivating over Esther carefully tending to Olivia's chest wound? Has everyone been replaced by the clones from Judge Dredd, er, I mean the shapeshifters?

"I would hardly regard what I just smoked to be marijuana."

    by vikkimarsdale

"It is a hybrid of Chronic Supernova and Afghani Kush. I call it Brown Betty."

The bubbling water-bong, the musical cue, Walter's slow exhale and the smile on his face... Not only the best opening scene from any TV show ever, the best fictional depiction of the pot-smoking experience ever filmed.

Of course, Walter would hardly describe what he just smoked as "pot" - it's a hybrid of Chronic Supernova and Afghani Kush.
    He calls it "Brown Betty..."

Gotta have a label for those Red Vines...

Re the 'Tears For Fears' number

    by mr_strickland

I don't think anyone's mentioned it here and I'm probably stating the obvious, but I'm guessing that the inclusion of 'Head Over Heels' was an intentional Donny Darko reference (alternate universes/realities etc). I have to admit that I don't poke around the interweb much so for all I know I'm probably the millionth person to point this out.
