Response to last night's AICN/DRAFTHOUSE screening of IRON MAN 2
Hey folks, Harry here with a reader's evaluation of the events last night at the Alamo South - when well... here's how it all got underway, minus the awkward satellite feed hook-up and... well, it all worked out, thank God...
Jon Favreau and Robert Downey Jr. at the Alamo Drafthouse from DG on Vimeo.
And here is someone that I don't know, but that enjoyed the event last night. This isn't a jaded critic with his head up his ass like me or especially that Hollywood Reporter dipshit. He's just a fan, one of you... and he thought it was AWESOME... (fyi, just like I told ya so!)
Harry
Caught the screening at the drafthouse last night thanks to following Favreau on Twitter.
First thing I want to say is this is not the Dark Knight. So stop comparing it TBers. Iron Man and Dark Knight were both independently successful in 2008 because they are polar opposites in the tone and direction the movie went. DK being serious and “dark” and Iron Man being lighter and 100X more fun and entertaining. I personally enjoyed them both tremendously.
Now on to Iron Man 2…
The movie is awesome. I had concerns that with all the moving pieces it was going to get lost much like Spider-Man 3 because it had to juggle so many villains and subplots but it work in Iron Man 2. Every character Tony, Rhodey, Black Widow, Hammer, and Vanko all start in different places which had me immediately concerned for a million subplots but within 30 minutes the major players get together and threat seems much more real than the weak third act of the first film.
I was also worried that Nick Fury would just be thrown in to piece together the “universe” and it would be a weak phoned in wink at the audience but he actually served a major purpose to Iron Man’s “survival” and Tony in general. Their conversations build on the groundwork of the post credits scene to where it wasn’t a cameo but actual plot development (even if its payoff is 2 years away). There were nice references to Cpt. America and the Hulk during the movie also… nothing about Thor but Favreau hinted there will be a scene at the end of the actual released print but didn’t confirm anything. Rumor is you see Thor’s Hammer or something according to the internet.
Sam Rockwell will finally be introduced to the “general movie public” which is great because he steals nearly every scene he is in. Playing a wannabe Tony Stark but he still remains likeable despite the fact he ends up a misguided villain. I actually hope the DVD has some deleted scenes with him and Downey Jr because there is a bar scene where they play off each other incredibly.
Scarlett is hot. And she fights. And she is hot. The end.
But ultimately the movie is about Tony Stark which is what is cool about the movie. It’s not Iron Man suiting up every 15 minutes to stop a carjacking. The main complaint I have read is that there is not enough Iron Man in Iron Man 2. I think we only see him 3 times in suit but 2 of those are fantastic action sequences including the ending that I didn’t think would top the F1 racing in terms of bad ass…but it did.
All in all the mixed reviews aren’t going to stop people from seeing the movie. But here is what I’ll say. If you liked Iron Man… you will LOVE Iron Man 2. It is a fun & entertaining movie from start to finish with some awesome action scenes and plenty of nerdy references for the comic nerds. If you go in expecting the Dark Knight of course you’ll say it sucks it is nothing even close to the Dark Knight so get over it. Its fucking Iron Man.
If you use this call me NOTtheDK
and if you're curious what Moriarty thought of IRON MAN 2 don't wonder anymore... His check cleared too.

I was at the first showing in Norway!!!! I was the only guy who waited til after the credits!! I think i migth be one of ,if not the first to see MJØLNIR on screen:)!!! Also, the the way Tony uses Captain Americas shield was hillarious!!! Did you see the aftermath of the Hulks rampage on the monitors when Tony is talking with Nick Fury!!! This movie was great!!!! oh...In My Opinion ofcourse.....Also that little nod to the recasting of rhodey:) "i wasn´t expecting to see YOU here" -"Im here, deal with it" that was class.......one of the best lines was pepper potts to justin hammer about the vanity fair reporter from the first film...-She gave Tony a huge spread last year:) and Tony goes -she also did an article:) lol without missig a beat!!!poor recording, but the actual post credit scene....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =1oVsw17kEJg

SHIELD assembles a team to defend Earth from such an "secret invader", the group consists of eccentric scientist/academia types set to form the "Defenders", the oddball team is set apart from the distinguished superhero Avengers team. Project "Defenders" will be the “Twilight Zone/X-Files” of the new Marvel movie franchises; they want it to be a Dr Strange-centric movie less on the action and more of a creepy thriller type of vibe to it. Marvel is gunning for a post-Hobbit Guillermo del Toro to direct and Neil Gaiman to write, both of whom expressed interest in the project in the past http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=21964

Dark Knight was not all that and a bag of chips
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
It was a good movie, but sheesh it was not that good! I will see IM2 though.
-
yeah iron man and iron man 2 are fun movies that will carry a special place in many a fanboys heart, but seriously The dark knight is just a magnificant film it's more then a sueprhero film, it's a clasic crama and film noirbut hey it's cool to like both, i think you nerds forget that at times
-
But to each their own. Can't wait for IM2 either. You are allowed to like both, you know?

Rumblings heard again that once the Hobbit movies are completed Marvel will be gunning for Guillermo del Toro to bring about a new Defenders franchise to run post /parallel Marvels Avenger franchise.
A Doctor Strange-centric "Defenders" movie that fits into what Marvel is now calling the “Marvel Cinematic Universe”. SHIELD pulls together a paranormal special ops team (http://www.remoteviewed.com/remote_viewing_history_military.htm) after the Military/SHIELD/NASA made contact with a "Beyonder" (or Celestial, some sort of "magical" trans-dimensional entity like... ahem, an Asgardian perhaps?) SHIELD realizes it doesn't have the capabilities to ascertain if this “thing” is a threat or not. Thus sets the premise for the Defenders movie, where the deployment of occult, fringe science, brains, and brawn are employed to defeat a multi-dimensional and or “secret invasion” cosmic threat to save the day in such a way that Avengers cannot.
The team that SHIELD assembles to defend us from such an invader will be a group of eccentric scientist/academia types culled to form the "Defenders", the oddball counterpoint to the distinguished Avengers team. Project "Defenders" will be the “Twilight Zone” of the new Marvel movie franchises; they want it to be less of an action movie and have more of a creepy thriller type of vibe to it. The Defender operatives will consist of group leader - the brilliant Dr. Stephen Vincent Strange former renowned neurosurgeon turned occultist scholar and “metaphysicist” (character to be loosely based around Aleister Crowley /Terence McKenna eccentric by way of Robert Langdon, Namor McKenzie (Sub-Mariner, the superhuman Jacques-Yves Cousteau by way of Rudolf Steiner, believes he’s the literal Prince of Atlantis) , Dr. Robert Bruce Banner (Hulk, brilliant “Omnidisciplinary” scientist, the world’s greatest expert on gamma radiation… need we say more?), Dr. Henry "Hank" Pym (Ant-Man, MIT professor renowned quantum physicist), and his partner Janet Van Dyne (Wasp, one-time student to Pym now associate, extremely bright but introverted Lady Gaga “individualist” type personality/ look). Themes incorporated into Defenders movie include motifs from the bestselling magical/occult/secret society Dan Brown books, along with themes from the more recent Marvel series involving Secret Wars/Invasion/Warriors/Illuminati storylines (specifically the newer S.H.I.E.L.D. 2010 comic series). They'll be looking for lean lesser-known actors to play non-super hero type characters, and there are ruminations that Strange may be pushed forward to play a crucial role as catalyst to merge the magical other-dimensional realms like Asgard into the more "realistic" Iron Man universe.
Questions remain about the timeline and release of the Doctor Strange character into the big screen. Will we see Doctor Strange in a smallish part for the upcoming Avengers movie helping to usher in the “magical” component onto the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Or will Strange remain left out of the Avengers universe altogether for now, and another plot device or character be used to infuse the “magical elements” instead of him?... They are determined to bring on Dr. Strange movie post Ant-Man, the question remains will Strange remain side-lined for now? Some at Marvel are extremely hush-hush as plot points, characters as well as want-lists that are still being hashed-out for upcoming films, others think it’s good to gauge public opinion about what properties the public truly cares for and how they can be incorporated to the larger Marvel Movie-verse whilst staying true to the premise of the characters. Some of us like me see the potential and are really pushing for a Doctor Strange-centric Defenders movie but more importantly having Strange play a pivotal if not smallish role in the upcoming Avengers movie.

Nothing wrong with liking both. I like TDK
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
But some geeks elevate it simply because they think 'we need a Godfather equivalent' and this movie is 'serious'. No you don't and no it's not. TDK has far too many serious flaws in it. I think Harry was right when he said it is the best DC superhero movie, but it aint the best superhero movie.
-
..... and Iron Man wasn't much to shout about either, both were watchable, both were forgettable. To this day I do not understand the love The Dark Knight gets, Batman Begins was far better in my opinion. Let the hate for me begin!
-
I for got to mention i'm on holiday in like the next hour to lie in a beach in Greece (Santorini to be specific) so i won't be able to lap up the hate for another 2 weeks, ohhh shucks!!!

Iron Man is overrated, boring, and underwhelming
by trannyformers_apologist
How Iron Man got a 94 or 95% Rotten Tomatoes rating is beyond insulting The Dark Knight has superior: story acting action suspense dialoguemusic themes emotional impact ending All Iron Man fans can say is that Iron Man was fun...... Just like Avatard, Iron Man 2's positive reviews are not that positive and sound negative to mediocre at best.

TDK was good but it didn't have Scarlett's ass going up stairs.

Ooo Dark Knight was 'Dark' so it must be good!
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
Because 'Dark' means 'serious'! Get defuck outta here. TDK was an entertaining movie, but just because it was 'dark' and some geeks feel a need to say 'see we have an Godfather type movie too' does not make it a fuckin masterpiece.
-
Batman is cool, but he's just to boring and simplistic for the new millennium audiences.
-
It's on HBO HD all the time. Still can't get into a single moment of it. The final third is completely lifeless: you people the viewers don't care about need to argue about which train/bus gets blown up. No offense to Heath, he's the only Joker I can't associate with the Batman franchise...
-
What is WRONG with you IDIOTS?!
-
You mean the same Sam Rockwell who was in Frost/Nixon, Matchstick Men, The Green Mile, and Charlies Angels? Thank god he's finally being introduced to the general movie going public.
-
You just have to suck the life out of everything, don't ya?"My movie is better than your movie!""Bullshit! Mine totally pwns yours."Ponderous, man. PONDEROUS!I'd declare my undying love for you all if I didn't hate you so much.;^)
-
I kind of agree with the Rockwell in the review look at the movies you listed: Frost/Nixon, Matchstick Men, The Green Mile, and Charlies Angels. With the exception of Charlie's Angels the rest are low budget not big box office draws that appeal to all demographics. So yes he has been in some maainstream stuff but THIS could be HUGE for him.
-
This site actually makes me ashamed to be a movie lover. Thank God the general public doesn't know how these whiny retards act, unless they do it in their personal lives too. I don't know what it is about this site that breeds so much hatred.
-
Just makes me giggle and smile every time. That movie is not perfect, but it's certainly better than the silly backlash it's getting now. Even if for no other reason than it's allowed all these other super hero movies to be greenlit. Every studio/writer/director wants to be responsible for the next TDK. Recognize, haters.
-
Still haven't seen IM 1, so 2 isn't on the top of my list. ....but Scarlett's ass is... so you never know. Maybe I'll catch this one in the theater.
-
comparisons. Comparing TDK and Iron Man is like comparing Puppetmaster to Toy Story
-
LOoved the first film. Pretty sure this one will kick ass as well.
-
there is something seriously wrong with you. IM was good,it was a great Comic Book movie, but the TDK was a awesome movie comic book or no comic book.
-
An outlaw. An anti-hero in the truest sense of the word. So what if he took the blame for some murders. It's in keeping with the character.
-
and If you like the one then the other must suck? what is every one 12 years old on this site or what?
-
...should be immediately banned from film commentary for eternity. I mean jesus Christ do we not have the internet to look at naked people whenever we want? Go get it out of your system. Fucking children.
-
a setup for redemption in a third movie. But seriously who cares if Batman takes the blame for murders. That's why he has alter ego. So he can remain above the law.
-
...really, how cool was that? RDJ and JF introducing the movie? And the little bit on film was pretty damn funny. But Harry - you're still confined to the wheelchair? I thought you had the stomach surgery...?

They can work the Secret Wars into it and get the rebooted Spider-Man the alien symbiote costume the proper way. Just in time for another third Spider-Man/Venom film.On a side note, this Marvel Cinematic Universe plan is never going to work without constant rebooting. Even in the comics you have artists and writers coming and going all the time, so just how do they expect to pull this off with actors and salaries? It's not a realistic long term plan.

That's a bloody ripoff. What, did Favs spend the money on coke n' whores instead?

He rigs them well in advance and waits for an excuse to blow them up. He set up the boats after the MCU. As for the goons, they're dependable because they know what will happen if they are not.

Really Harry? Calling another critic a dipshit because he didn't like the movie? Seriously? What the fuck happened to having an opinion?

for putting in a personal appearance like that. They are great.

Where does his gang come from if he's always killing people off? Where did that bazooka come from? How did he find the right hood to plant the bomb in so he could escape from the jail. How does he slip into Dent's hospital room where security was so tight. How did he get out of Wayne's benefit party. Oh well, it was a good movie anyway.

Glad TDK is finally losing it's holier-than-thou sheen...
by burnhollywood
For Chrissakes, the movie actually has a plot hole right in the opening sequence, where the Joker's henchmen kill each other off one by one...to increase the share the Joker gets, right? Wrong. He makes a big point out of stating that he's not in it for the money halfway through the movie!
The movie had gravitas and first rate acting with next to nothing to back it up in the script department. -
It was only because he was nuts in a socially acceptable (needed even) way no one bothered him. Hell they cheered him on. So when it fell apart he didn't do a 180, he just did his old job (internal affairs) in a violent way.
-
But it's damned professional. And Bale was as handsome as all get-out.
-
Um, you watched TDK, right? He took the money and burned it to prove a point, instead of letting a bunch of low level thugs keep it. Not to mention that plan at the beginning completely fits the Joker's personality. Whether he wanted the money or not, why pass up the opportunity to turn a few people against each other, further proving his point. That opening scene was about anarchy, not keeping the stolen money.
-
...did Downey run for the hand sanitizer after going backstage.
-
...is complete bullshit. They're both great movies. Sure, you can pick them apart. I could do that with any one of my favorite superhero movies. Don't believe me? Watch:
1. Iron Man - great dialogue, lousy action (and even dialogue wears thin upon repeat viewing).
2. Dark Knight - third act with Two-Face felt tacked on from a different movie, dragging the pace from dizzying to tedious.
3. Spider-Man 2 - How many people need to see your secret identity before it becomes useless?
4. X-Men 2 - Rogue is a simpering, whiny teenager? What comics were you reading, Singer?
5. Superman 2 - So, let's get this straight - if you turn the world backwards, it doesn't create floods, earthquakes and general destruction? Have you talked to Stephen Hawking? What did he say?
There. I did it. I ripped my five favorite superhero movies of all time to shreds. What did that prove? Nothing. Just that no movie is perfect. That's all. Still love every one of them and see no reason to pick favorites. Some of you people need to grow the fuck up. -
...it was 20 minutes too long, and the final reel was a bit of a mess. Very similar to Casino Royale, in fact.
I don't understand why they felt compelled to wrap up the Harvey Dent story in a rushed (yet overlong) ending. It didn't work, pulling the threat in two directions. Two-Face needed to be born in that movie but become the major player in a subsequent movie. -
Oil barrels? Money from bank job. Gang? Arkham. Bazooka? Money (duh). Fat man? He's... Fat. Dent's hospital room? The place was in chaos and he killed one guard (real tight) after the other left. Getting out of Wayne's benefit party. He's the Joker, you're a trust fund lush. Are you going to get in the way? Y'know, if you spent more time understanding TDK you'd realize there is no plot holes.
-
...who vastly prefers Spider-Man 3 (a mess, yes, but HUGELY entertaining) to Spider-Man 2 (boring throughout, and weighed down by a sense of its own self-importance, believing it is smarter and weightier than it actually is).
-
I should know. I've watched it like 1,000 times and I've yet to catch one flaw.

by the dolphins are in the jacuzzi
What was the deal with the cellphones? How did Bruce Wayne manage to implant cameras in every single cell phone in Gotham? Did he buy every manufacturing plant (even overseas) and then install them himself? In a week? Really? Still think TDK is a great movie, so fuck off.

Here's a very legitimate gripe with TDK...
by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave
Crap action scenes. Nolan can't do 'em, especially close quarter fight sequences. The opening skirmish between the thugs and the faux-batmen is an incomprehensible editing mess. It's Nolan's one really weak spot, and I hope it doesn't sink Inception...
-
a boner for either TDK or IM when they came out. I was excited by all the positive buzz TDK was getting over Heath Ledger and IM sort of came out of nowhere. Both movies kind of drug down for me in what is being referred to as the 3rd act. Honestly all I could think of at the end of TDK was that the Joker was going to either never be re-visited again in a Nolan Batman flick or that it was going to be played by someone else and we would all have Heath Ledger in the back of our minds every time we saw it. Sort of took me out of the movie I was watching. IM sort of reminded me of the Hulk ending (reboot, not Ang Lee's version). I just kind of didn't care a lot. Still, both were really good flicks. Just never got that "first time you saw Star Wars as a kid" vibes. But I doubt I'll ever get that in a movie again.
-
Good sub-topic.
I vote for The Terminator (of course) and Tremors (modest in its ambitions, but pretty much flawless).
Alien.
The Thing.
And just sneaking onto the list...The Fabulous Baker Boys. -
Okay he had the money, but how did he manage to take over those two buildings to place the barrles? He didn't have much manpower. How does Dent not die from having that scarred up of a face? How did the Joker manage to become part of the honor guard at the funeral?
-
Your not serious right?
-
It's echolocation, not cameras. All cellphones can do that.
-
Since the Joker does not have a lair or a base, Batman must track the constantly mobile madman through the streets of Gotham. To do this he uses a cowl-mounted sonar device that triangulates the baddies' cellphone signals and then renders the sound of their communication into a 3-D visual map. Real-World Counterparts: Lidar and SonarUsually utilizing lasers, a Lidar system measures reflected light to find the range, dimensions and other properties of far-off objects. Sonar, of course, is the technology of bouncing sound waves off faraway objects to get a realistic picture of where those objects are. Combine the two, and you've got the 3-D system Batman uses to hunt his quarry.http://tinyurl.com/65njsy

I have a problem with people comparing apples to oranges with superhero movies in a "my movie is better than your movie" way. But as for the Spider-Man movies, that's apples to apples. Here goes: Was Spider-Man 2 self-important? Yes, but so was the comic. "With great power comes great responsibility?" That was from the first appearance in Amazing Stories. What could be more self-important than that? As for Spider-Man 3, I had a lot of issues (not the same as a lot of people; for instance, I didn't have a problem with Raimi making Sandman sympathetic. I thought that actually gave depth and gravitas to an otherwise one-dimensional character). But if you're only going to have Venom in the movie for 10, minutes, why have him at all? And as for Harry Osbourne's character, the way he was written never felt like anything more than a plot device. Hell, even the costume seemed like an afterthought. "Yeah, here's a body-stocking from wardrobe. Nobody will notice." Stuck inside that overstuffed mess was a good single Sandman movie trying to get out. Everything else was crap. JMHO.
-
TDK wasn't making a statement about "anarchy", because as a former anarchist, I can tell you that it's actually a movement with objectives and goals. What you mean is "chaos", which doesn't get shit accomplished over the long haul. In reality, you can't run around forcing people to do unreasonable shit left, right and sideways and think that at least some of them aren't going to go to the police. Chaos is subject to chaos itself.
And in the end, the movie undermines its point in the dopiest way imaginable, by having the occupants of the two ferries suddenly discover their hearts and let each other survive...bullshit. The ruthlessness that *might* cause a single person to sell out their ideals (like the cops the Joker manipulated) is exceedingly pronounced in mobs (look up the Stanford Prison Experiment or Abu Ghraib for details)...the civilians would've blown up the criminals within minutes and forgiven themselves afterwards. It's pretty much a sociological rule that makes lynchmobs so terrifying. -
If you're talking about the ferries my guess is they were getting rigged while everyone was panicing over the hospitals. Dent WAS dying. And the Joker kept to the back of the guard (all his guys and in on the 'joke') while everyone was looking at windows.

Thanks for that. Obviously, I didn't mean that cellphones can't have cameras. What I wanted to know was how he could track them. Reasonable explanation. Still loved the movie, anyway; but now I've got one less gripe.

Lol, and how about before that when the two guys slide from one office bulding to land on the roof of another, did anyone not look out their windows at the time to see that happen?
-
What? You guys don't believe my review, well here's another one, see, I'm right! Don't you see how right I am? Look at this, I told you!
-
Here's the proof... http://tinyurl.com/d2nzhe - as much as I like TDK I prefer the first two Keaton Batmans over Bale's efforts and, of course, Mr.Adam West would whup both their asses with just a few steps of The Batusi.
-
The GREATEST comic book film ever made. Deal with it. Iron man was fun. Dark Knight was fun AND deep. Live with it. Move on.
-
Was not a comic book movie.
-
Sorry, but that's just a cop-out. It's crucial in fiction (even fantasy and SF) to establish certain consistencies so that as fantastical as the story might get, logic remains intact. TDK falls apart because a Gotham City that has occupants compassionate enough to give a shit about the lives of convicts is NOT a city that needs a guy to dress up as a bat in order to protect them.
If I wanted to be a real geek about things, I'd point out that echolocation in cell phones probably wouldn't work...cell phones, in order to minimize bandwidth concerns, use a set of stripped down audio frequencies that would probably be useless for that purpose. But little English boys also can't fly on brooms, and there's no archaeological evidence of a human-orc war, etc, so THAT'S actually being an annoying douche. -
My take on the movie:
Primarily, it is about Peter's hubris.
Secondarily, it is about the love triangle between Peter, MJ and Harry.
Tertiarily is not a word, but it sounds good, so tertiarily it is about Venom, but only as a subset of the hubris theme: Peter makes a dangerous enemy unnecessarily because it amused him to exercise his power. Venom is not important as a character/enemy in his own right. Spider-Man fans may consider this a waste, and it may be, but if you try to watch S-M 3 as "the one where he fights Venom", you're viewing the film through the wrong prism.
Lastly, WAY back in last place, it is about the Sandman, but only to serve as a mechanism of forgiveness. The Sandman is the least important element of the film, presenting no significant threat other than that which comes from kicking a wasps' nest.
The best scenes in the movie are the fights between Peter and Harry. That is its real heart qua action movie. (And both of those sequences are excellent.)
IMO.
And the sequence where Peter is getting cocky, and (especially) where he's flirting with Miss Brant...fucking hilarious. -
I will promptly jizz my pants....
-
You have a point about the ending, and I never claimed TDK was flawless, but whether it's chaos or anarchy my point about the opening sequence still stands. There is no plot hole, it was The Joker doing what he does, causing chaos and death, and keeping the money to prove his point.
-
Spider Man 3 is actually about how you ruin a franchise by choosing the wrong villains, a director who hates the most popular villain that the studio forces in the movie, and why you should not put a weird scene where the hero turns emo instead of evil. Its basically about how to not do a superhero movie
IMO it was worse than X3 because X3 was...well it was what everyone expected it to be. Spiderman 3 could have been great and made up for the slightly above average Spiderman 2. -
I thought it was the GREATEST first 70% of a comic book film ever made.
The mid-section of the movie is terrific. -
into his robot lab assistant? You expect me to believe that you can connect a human brain into a robot? That was stupid.
-
I don't even now how you can compare Batman and Iron Man. The COMICS are fucking different, the MOVIES are different too. Batman is supposed to dark. Iron Man is supposed to be a little more light.
-
... that I refused to see THE DARK KNIGHT. Ponder that.
-
I love that sequence. I understand that a lot of people don't. That's fine.
In many ways it's the most Raimi-ish film of the trilogy. It never fails to entertain me. The only real weak point is the final battle, which is a bit crap, although Harry's arrival, though utterly predictable and formulaic, still works very nicely as a dramatic moment.
I guess I never cared that much about Venom. Perhaps if I did, that would have been my primary concern, overriding all other aspects of the movie.
On the one hand, I have a lot of sympathy for the idea that there are "too many villains". On the other, as I've argued above, I don't feel that either Venom or Sandman are remotely important to the plot qua villains. Neither of them drive the plot; they are just side-plots to the central theme, and to the two main battles going on: Peter vs Harry, Peter vs Hubris. -
at the side of my face. Burning!
-
You missed my point slightly. That kind of compassion runs through most hollywood movies and every major tentpole like TDK. If that bothers you then you picked the wrong hobby. On the mobiles, Fox's machine did amplify the frequencies (mentioned in Hong Kong) and probably did add bandwidth to compensate.
-
"I don't even now how you can compare Batman and Iron Man. The COMICS are fucking different"
It would be kinda funny if they weren't, and if they merely had different covers. -
Iron Man 2 looks like a real treat and I'm seeing it tomorrow.
-
cause Iron Man gets to have his identity known.
-
"Greatest Comic Book movie ever made" is a funny sentence. Makes a reasonable person's head explode. It's like an apology and praise all at once. Probably not what you intended. When the original Superman came out I was a youngling. Absolutely loved it. Just seemed completely pure and honest and real and fantastic all at the same time. I might still hold it up as the finest adaptation of a Superhero to the big screen ever.
-
Because Stark fucked over the other heroes and got away with it. Don't believe me? Read Civil War...
-
Im actually with you, that sequence cracks me up and is one of the few things I enjoyed about Spidey 3.
-
...I cant rewatch 1 or 2, but Ill rewatch the hell outta 3... same goes for the X movies... good action with actual consequences... whereas wit both spidey/x 1 and 2, everything was too dramatic and serious (although S2 got good action, but it still sucks imo)...
-
So many retards bashing how a comic book movie should be done. Iron Man is fucking lightweight popcorn shit. TDK is deep and emotional. I should beat the shit out of you fucking mouth breathers.
-
It was an action movie with some crime elements in it. TDK wasn't supposed to be deep.
-
who would win and why?
-
I WANNA KNOW ABOUT SHOGUN WARRIORS.

Dark Knight had weird plot holes, and Bale couldn't move his nec
by codename
Iron Man wins.
-
This is going to be the majority censensus among people after they see IM2.
-
I didn't miss your "point", which seems to be some spiteful assertion that if I had issues with a "masterpiece" like TDK, then I must hate movies, or something. Now you're trying to say that a hokey attempt to insert compassion in a plot where it's superfluous and damaging to the overall story makes me heartless, I guess. More bullshit, because my favorite two movies from '09 were DISTRICT 9 and MOON, which were all about compassion.
TDK fails because the scriptwriters didn't understand Batman or his relationship to Gotham City and the Joker. Case in point: when the Joker and Bats have their big face-off at the precinct, the Joker cackles that he'll show him that when the chips are down, Gotham's residents will turn on each other like hungry rats. Batman's reply is to get upset and start beating the snot out of him, instead of simply shrugging and saying, "Tell me something I DON'T know, clown. You think I'd run around dressed like a bat, clobbering criminals in the middle of the night if I believed in the innate goodness of human beings? Oh, and where's Dent, dipshit...you're starting to bore me."
As I said, I concede the point on the cell phones...technobabble solution, but verisimilitude is the stock and trade of action/SF, so I couldn't care less. Not understanding the interrelationships of key characters or their motivations is why the film is merely good and not great. -
because its true. Irom Man 2 is for kids. TDK is a comic book movie for grown ups. Its understandable those who hates TDK are kids.

GAIKING IS FRIEND TO ADULTS AND JAPANESE CHILDREN
by the green gargantua
-
if people had conversations in the movie instead of making statements to each other.
-
The Dark Knight is easily Nolan's least impressive film. He just can't do action.
-
Well put. A solid crime drama...That sucked as a comic-book movie. Are all the TDK zealots just in the closet about their love for Heath or Nolan that any criticism at all towards their beloved is dealt with so vehemently? "Deep and emotional...(sniff)". It's a well made movie, but a religious experience?!?! TDK is like the shiny, successful son with the well-paying job but who, if you hold a microscope over, some of the seams start to show. Batman Begins is the son people may knock for some obvious superficial flaws, but whose heart and spirit can't be matched. And I've said it before and I'll say it again. Fuck Chicago. Give me Gotham City. Say what you will about Batman '89, at least Burton and Anton Furst built a damn Gotham City from the ground up. And it was dense, and ugly, and claustrophobic, and crime ridden.
And if you wanna stay true to the comic, have the balls to let the Joker take the chemical bath. None of this "warpaint" shit. Chemicals can leave scars, too. That way the fanatic fanboys can still have the favorite Joker catchphrase to spout while they paint their faces and hold their toy knives and rub themselves thru their cheap purple pants.
"Fucking lightweight popcorn shit."
...That he will plunk down $15 or so to watch, of course.
Yay Iron Man. -
Jon Favreau called me up, crying, saying nobody took him seriously anymore now that he's been associated with Harry Knowles."This isn't a jaded critic with his head up hiss ass...he's one of you!"
-
Christian Bale is the acting equivalent of an anaesthetic. And Maggie Gylenhall somehow managed to turn in one of the worst acting performances of all time.
-
GAIKING, MAZINGER, REIDEEN all agree that both Iron Man and Batman while both about superhero bazillionairs, are tonally, emotionally and conceptually very different characters/(& film franchises) that deserve to be compared as much as Empire Strikes Back and Spiderman 2. They also agree that this debate is retarded and that Harry should follow up on Gaiking's movie so that Green Gargantua can find out where they are building the full scale robots and camp out nearby.
-
hey assholes, TDK was awesome!
stop sayin how ironman is better when u havent seen it yet.
2 different movies, u all bitch about TDK now but when it was july 2008 u all loved it and couldnt wait to be the joker.
Now u all wanna hate on this movie, i bet in 6 months all u crybabies who bitch abt TDK, will say ironman 2 sucked.
watch, when the chips are down u all will see what i mean!
-
thats it...you are no longer allowed to go see the next bat flick when it comes out...cause you little (yeah right) twerps have bitched and moaned your permission to go see it, yeah...I can back it up...think "Undertaker" big muddafudders, stick your head closer to this monitor so I can smack you one. hehe
-
Why does everyone have to choose one over the other?
-
Why does every IM talkback get clogged with crap that has nothing to do with IM. Let's take it back to talking about what happened in Austin and IM in general okay. If youw want to talk TDK or other stuff find the appropriate talkback and go there.
What a great moment for those fans in Austin to have both Favs and Downey show up, I know I am envious and even more so that they got to watch IM2 9 days earlier than I do, lol.
I am still very excited to see IM2 and love the fact that Favs and Downey would show up at a geekfest to mix with the ordinary folk.
The challenge IM2 will face is sky high expectations. After the huge success of IM everybody's expecatations including critics are probably too high. You need to have some balance when you see any film and judge it on its own merits even if it is a sequel.
The other challenge it will face is that for most of mainstream America they had very little idea of who IM was so IM seemed fresh and new, which also helped.
I can tell just from the trailers that the action will be stepped up and I have no doubts that I will thoroughly enjoy it.
At times it can be pretty frustrating to come onto this site and see the rampant negativity that exists. I do see a few positive people out there so that gives me hope, but man some of you have got to just enjoy the fact that they are making superhero movies now that, for those of us who grew up in the 70's, could have never dreamed possible.
So enjoy the ride people and know that IM2 is going to rock and rock hard!!! -
i think the reviewer (accidently) by saying don't compare them they are too different enjoy them for what they are set off a stupid talkback of idiots comparing two movies for no reason
-
I love DK and I love IM weird. I have both DVDs weird. If I had to choose one to watch right now it would depend on my mood. Want fun? IM! Want serious? DK!
-
Now I really wish AICN would upgrade to a chat system that would let you ignore users. You obviously enjoy being a troll for troll's sake. -
so... this guy's cool because he agrees with you, that reviewer is a dipshit because he doesn't? Real mature
-
so I don't know why people bother to watch it. I mean D-9 was the best movie ever made in the history of history and all copies of other movies should be erased and copied over with District 9. We only really need one movie anyway. I hope when I go see IM2 on opening night that someone replaces the film with D-9 which I'll admit has it's flaws, but at least Sharlto Copley was really really good looking in it, and that's what makes a movie great right?
-
..."HEY! I TOLD YOU NOT TO CASH THE CHECK UNTIL FRIDAY!".
-
It pisses me off that Letterier goes off saying the Avengers movie ruins Hulk movies. We've got the Leader to pay off still! And She-Hulk! And the new Hulk still has to top the leaping/tank-hurtling/jet-fall stuff of the Ang Lee version. And of course, I don't want another Bruce Banner. If they don't move, they might lose Norton. I'm sorry that Iron Man 2 is coming out alone this summer, as the one-two punch of Iron Man AND Hulk two years ago was something magical. At least next year we'll--hopefully, get another dose with Thor and Captain America together. I hope they are both as fun as 2008's two-pack.
-
When it pulls back to reveal Harry the Hutt laying on the stage with an asian girl chained to him.

A talkbacker actually wrote a greasemonkey script that modifies the way your browser sees and interacts with the site, including not seeing certain talkbackers posts. For the life of me, I cannot recall who or what the name of it was. Anyone? Try googling greasemonkey aicn script.
-
and by people i mean NERDS, feel the need to find flaws in every single fucking movie that comes along? Seriously. The Dark Knight has flaws, boo-fuckin'-hoo! Iron Man was okay but it had flaws, so fuckin' what! How did Bruce Wayne turn all the cell phones into cameras? Why would the Jokers thugs off each other? How does Tony Stark scratch his nuts when they itch? WHO FUCKING CARES! Do you people ever stop and listen to yourselves? It's okay to actually like something that's not perfect, and this is coming from an admittedly self- proclaimed perfectionist. I'm not saying turn off your brains and like everything regardless of quality, I'm just saying it's okay to sit back and enjoy the ride sometimes. TDK and IM are BOTH awesome movies. Does not knowing how Harvey Dent doesn't die due to massive infection caused by his injuries really keep you awake at night? Seriously people, get over it. Remember what the fuck your talking about, comic books and superheroes. The term "grounded in reality" only goes so far when it comes to these movies. It should actually be "as realistic as fuckin' possible". How will Thor fit into a universe where a "realistic" Iron Man and Captain America exist? I'll tell ya how. WITH YOUR FUCKING IMAGINATION THATS HOW!!! Anyway, I'm not sorry for my rant, I just get damn tired of hearing people bitch about such stupid things. End rant.
Now, moving right along, I can't wait to see IRON MAN 2. It looks pretty fuckin' cool! -
bale and the haters are fucking through professionally.
-
You are better being the superhero of your own situation. As a matter of fact, a "stiff-necked" superhero might need your help when say, parallel parking, or swimming.
-
1) Can move neck without shifting entire body to see villains on the right and left.
2) Can move neck without shifting entire body to see oncoming missiles.
3) Can parallel park a car.
I don't think the Dark Knight can do any of these. Iron Man wins. -
But they need to make a real Batman and quit basing him off of Burton's stylized version. Sorry for being harsh, but I'm tired of seeing rubbery squeakily-choreographed Batman fights. In the right right vision, Batman would blow every other superheroes out of the water. A Batman I'd like to see is a killer ultimate fighting machine that could waste Bruce Lee in two seconds. I'd love for a director to capture the grace of a more human character who relies on humanity's apex rather than an inheritance that is given to them via a freak DNA birthright. Batman earned his superhero title the hard way. That is why I think Hollywood/Nolan is not doing him justice. The Dark Knight is very spoon-fed action and isn't carnal enough. Come on, young Bruce Wayne could dance around the Octagon blind-folded and make Brock Lesnar cry of humiliation before pounding him (Lesnar) out cold. The real Batman, especially the younger and more ruthless year one Batman, goes for ribs (to knock air out) and knee caps (to immobilize enemy movement). We are introduced to real-world crimes, but squeaky stiff, rubbery fights in Dark Knight. This style worked for Burton, but not so much for Nolan's world.
-
Batman blind folded in the Octogon and he is dead. Hell, even in the Cage he has trouble. Why? Because they take away Batman's greatest weapon - a well placed nut shot.
Batman. Hitting below the belt since 1939. -
No, Batman blind-folded in the Octagon is Batman. And he would win.
-
would lose even if he could see.
-
Are you fucking kidding me? When Batman Begins/Dark Knight played in the theater, were you looking at the projector instead of the screen??? Burton's version (including "Returns")is EMBARASSING to sit through now.
-
But I will say MY Batman doesn't win. I prefer Bat-Man, the pulpish hero over Batman the superhero.
Having said that, if he faces Brock Lesnar in an alley way Brock is going to be called Cock Chestner and learn to live with it. Hell, even in a straight up cage fight Cap wins (just not Blindfolded in my book). -
A lot of people are not that impressed with the fight scenes in TDK or BB. It feels more like a scene that tell us there is a fight going on than a fight scene.
The fight scenes didn't bother you, hey cool. But for me they kind of took me out of the movie (the quick cuts and shaky camera just told me it was fake instead of making it feel real IMO). -
I meant Bats CodeName. Cap however would take Bats.
-
Look, Burton was going for a more stylized version of Batman. He was being more camp about it and not take it too seriously. He envisioned it through his Burtonesque style. And I agree, even Burton didn't do Batman justice. I am not disagreeing with you about Burton's vision either. But if you are going to praise Dark Knight because of its "masterpiece-ness" then at least make sure it is a masterpiece from all angles including a very stiff Burton-like costume. A real-world Nolan Batman shoulda been able to move at least his neck. Nolan was going for gritty realism, but that Burton suit? I'm saying that it worked better for Burton's realm than it did Nolan's.
-
Yeah, I got too excited and posted too instinctively to realize that you were just joking. But I agree with you... Bats would take it below the belt if he had to :)
-
At this point it's like comparing Scarface with Back to the Future. And they HAVE been basing movie Batmen off the Burton version. Burton made him black and rubber. The comics had him in grey tights with a blue cape. The closest interpretation of the "real" Batman costume is the Adam West outfit. Which saddens me, but I guess the body armour thing makes sense.
-
Nanotubes instead of rubber and kevlar.
http://tinyurl.com/2dgffel
It is light. It is flexible. And it is within the realm of plausible. -
The body armor thing does make sence... but at least move the neck, man. Move the neck.
-
Faverau and RDJ showing up is the apex of cool. C'mon the two of them have love and respect for the character and the fans and you clowns are debating the merits of Tim Burton's craptastic Batman?
-
Nice 'Clue' quote. One of my favorite moments.
And isildur29. You're weird. Pick a side and tell anyone else that doesn't agree with you that they are douches. It's the way the world works. -
Nice, I'm sure the new world order supersoldiers are working on this as we speak.
-
I mean, the worst thing in a fight is to have no head movement. Batman's T-zone is just a sitting duck.
-
A guy dressed up like a fucking bat, even if he was wearing body armor, would get arrested, or probably plummet to his death or take a shotgun blast to the face the first night on "patrol."
He's a guy dressed as a bat roaming around a city fighting crime. It's preposterous. It's a bit of imaginative adventure. It's totally fantastical.
It is not realistic in the slightest, so why in the holy fuck would you attempt to make a realistic movie about a guy who fights crime dressed up as a bat?
That's what TDK tries to do. And it fails.
John Byrne sums it up nicely: " THE DARK KNIGHT is a great movie --provided you do not go in looking for Batman or the Joker, for logical characterizations, or for anything resembling a cohesive plot thread. It is, from where I sit, the ultimate Modern Fan movie -- a complete desecration of the characters that puts style over substance, and tries desperately to pretend it has nothing to do with those silly comicbooks."
Yeah, I'll take Iron Man - a guy in a flying jet suit that fires repulsor rays. At least Favreau embraces the source material for what it is: a total fantastical flight of fancy. Or in other words, a COMIC BOOK. -
... Batman couldn't move his neck. Game over. Thank God you assholes don't make movies.
-
It seems like people just want to rip and make fun of something for the hell of it! The Dark Knight was a great movie. Iron man was a great surprise Movie. It is funny to see the people ripping on the Dark Knight are the ones who will be first in line to see its sequel! F#cking idiots! People if you rip on something make sure you have a good argument! Instead of just saying it sucked! It shows your lack of Intelligence!
-
I said it was a problem for me. And I think others have just stated they think it was a bad idea but not something that destroys the movie. You know, something that can maybe be fixed in the next one.
God, I love the hyperbole of the Batman/Nolan fanatics. Anyone dares to raise doubts or have questions is labeled a heretic and attacked. The fact they can't take any criticism towards it says a lot about their defensiveness. -
If someone wants to compare Iron Mana and TDK, they sure as fuck have every right to. They're both comic book movies, no? Just cause one is darker in tone somehow means the films are the polar opposite? Seriously you Dark Knight masturbaters need to realize that JUST like Iron Man, TDK is a movie about a dude in a costume fighting crime. END OF STORY. Both movies were pretty awesome first viewing in the cinema, and no, neither are masterpieces. As far as I'm concerned, each and every comic book adaptation can be compared to each other, cause despite differences in tone and atmosphere, ITS ALL THE SAME SHIT. It's nothing more then COSTUMED MEN FIGHTING PEOPLE!
And I hope you know that the reality of TDK's praise comes solely from atmosphere, and Heath Ledger. It's got a highly retarded script, piss poor action, and apart from Batman and the Joker, terrible characterization. Good movie? Of course. Cinematic Masterpiece? Hahaha. -
Does anyone else feel like this post was nothing more then Harry saying "see, someone agrees with me! I'm not writing my usual hyperbole filled reviews, gushing about something that's merely ok!". I wouldn't be surprised if he was emailed some mediocre or average IM2 reviews, but of course he would never post them.
-
that comes out of that hen house? rofl
-
Let's see the link above shows the Austin showing of IM2 and not once is there a mention of Batman, except in the review that is posted. Suffice it to say TDK was a good movie, IM was a good movie, nuff said about the comparison.
I have no doubt there are plenty of sites were you can chat about TDK all day long but for now with IM2 coming out let's talk about Iron Man. If you don't want to talk Iron Man then why in the hell are you even looking and responding to this talkback?
As far as Harry's review goes when he likes something he gushes and takes it over the top. Anybody who has come to this site for any length of time knows that so why does it surprise people when he goes crazy positive on something he loves. Just like any other review you read you have to take it with a grain of salt. Everybody has some sort of bias even so called objective reviewers so keep that in mind when you read a review good or bad. -
TDK sucks, you guys are cracking me up, the sarcasm is absolutely brilliant, coming across as overly critical, flying in the face of a very high critical consensus, its comedy gold!! ......ohh...you are being serious???...you are ??...ohh you are....ohhh
-
C'mon. Not all of us are saying it sucks. We are saying it is overrated.
You can love the movie and all, but I just disagree with the sentiment that it is a flawless masterpiece. Good movie yes, truly great? No.
And I find it comedic that people try to put this movie in the same category as Godfather or Chinatown. -
a few reviews that have come in and always a few reviewers that I pay attention to ie. Ebert and Travers and David Stratton (Australian film reviewers).
Stratton's reviews are normally pretty good and see he gave Iron Man 2, 3.5 out of 5, and some of his comments were :
"Downey is back in top form (after his unfortunate Sherlock Holmes) and Sam Rockwell is a joy as the nattily dressed, arrogant Hammer. Paltrow and Johansson make sharply contrasted rivals, and Rourke is a wonderfully colourful villain.
Unlike the first film, though, this runs out of steam a little towards the end, and the final confrontation between the good guys - Tony and his military ally, Rhodes (Don Cheadle) - and the bad guy, Rourke's Ivan, falls a little flat. There's only so many ways you can shoot action scenes between men in big iron suits and the first film exhausted most of them, leaving the sequel, despite its considerable qualities, with little room to manoeuvre. As a result, it feels over-extended (though it's only two minutes longer).
But this is a minor complaint. Who can cavil at a film in which the hero brings the girl strawberries because he knows she has some connection with the fruit. The trouble is, the connection is that she's allergic to them"
In summary its fun, but not as good as the first one, getting the feeling that will be the typical consensus on this movie, once you weed out the extreme reviews i.e. Harry on one side and the Daily mirror on the other.
-
Bats couldnt even hurt IM. Punch him, go ahead, see how quickly your hand shatters. Iron Man simply sends a missle into him from up in the sky, BOOM HEADSHOT.
-
an armourless Whiplash at the racetrack then? A repuslor ray to the head should do the trick. Whiplash shouldn't have even laid a hand on Iron Man.As for Batman vs. IM, Batman is never unprepared against an opponent. They don't call him the "World's Greatest Detective" for nothing. Batman would armor himself up as well to face Iron Man.
-
but not by much. Tony Stark has excellent tastes in ass...istants
-
Then name the film that is the standard for comic book movies.
-
Superman the Movie started it all.
-
And I think there is nothing wrong with that. In fact, I prefer it if he did lose.
As much as I liked TDKR, one thing it did was create this environment where popularity=toughness. Batman taking on Superman led to this idea that Batman can take on anyone and robbed him of one of his best assists - that he is just human. Batman isn't a superhero, he is a costumed vigilante, so he should be no match for guys with powers and high-tech devices.
Besides, a character's "coolness" or importance shouldn't interfere with his power level. Norman Bates is infinitely cooler and more important than Jason Voorhees, but I am not going to put money on Mama Bates favorite son.
And if being the "World's Greatest Detective" is such an advantage, I have to say Sherlock Holmes over IM and Batman. He the Greatest Detective EVER. -
think he cant handle ironman? pffft. bat will do his homework and find a way to tear apart that mark suit off stark. even the dude got to stark at one point, and in stark's own home. the dude. remember that.
-
is such a lame title. so he's the world's greatest detective aside to already being a billionare, the greatest fighter and the greatest engineer(what? he does all his own gadget and transports after all). he's practically superman in the comic!
that's why i always prefer nolan's take. he got someone else to help him build his legend. he's more down to earth in nolan's version. makes him more human and less superhuman, and hence cooler. -
Aside from that, maybe what the Batman films need to do is to have Bruce either create or buy material that can give him all the protection he might need, but still move like cloth. I read that the Army was working on stuff like that many years and years away, but its a comic book film, so one can take many liberties and not stick to our science. Ten years from now, we will look at that armor and laugh, as technology will supersede it. With this new material Batman can wear something that does not look like he goes scuba diving in it after fighting crime. Or walk around like Frankenstein. With a bit of imagination they can explain away all that armor and rubber, make him more graceful and fluid. It actually makes the character a braver if you strip his armor down a bit.. Look at Diehard the man had no shoes.. and it Eastern Promises that dude was naked and he still fought off a knife attack. When I read Batman as a kid, I always thought he had a bit of a death wish, he gave the criminals almost an equal footing, he used his wits, his training, his skills to beat them. Just some thoughts.. hopefully at some point this can go back to being an Iron Man convention. Best to all.
-
just like 'lop already said. in fact, the military is now doing secret projects involving nanotubes. watched it in discovery channel a while back. the material is so strong it can withstand knive, gunshot, even bomb blast. yet the material is so light and can be modified to look like very thin layer of cloth.
so nolan always have the excuse to make a bulletproof spandex if he so desires, even in the first film, since this technology has been in development for a while now. problem is, he didnt have the gut to stray too far from the burton's version of the costume. speaking for myself, i think nolan has lousy sense of design. both nolan's costume sucks. one makes him look a black michelin man, and another makes him look like an extreme sports athelete. bale is buff. he already has the perfect build. why cover it up with rubber? cover it with spandex to better showcase his endless hours spent at the gym. spandex looks good on spidey and supes, should look good on bale too. -
That TDK and Iron Man are from two different universes: DC and Marvel. They are not even comparable. The univereses can't meet. If you try and talk about both of them at the same time there will be an EXPLOSION that could kill us all. So STFU
-
dc, marvel, whatever. geeks will always imagine a vs. scenario between 2 similar characters. chun li & spiderman dont exist in the same universe either but that dont stop capcom to bring the two universe for battle-o-rama.

Debates over comic book characters in different Universes
by continentalop
Have been going on forever. That is why the Avengers fought the Sinister Squad and Squadron Sinister (thinly veiled versions of the JLA) and why Superman vs. Captain Marvel was talked about (and even parodied in Mad Magazine) long before the Big Red Cheese was bought up by DC.
-
Let's talk facts and not crap people. First off Tony is a genius, a better engineer and smarter than Bruce. Secondly with computer targeting, the strength of about 1000 batman's, in a straight up fight Batman goes down hard. I mean really IM could take Batman down from a couple hundred yards away since his repulsors travel at light speed and with computer targeting Batman would be toast. Certainly Bruce if given time would be able to devise some strategies to try and counter Tony but really people there is just no comparison here, note at all.
-
About the title "The World's Greatest Detective" being lame. To me that is the most important aspect of Batman - using his intelligence to solve crime. I don't care if he isn't the world's greatest martial artist (he just has to be damn tough) or a genius inventor (like you said, he can buy it). I do care that he solves crimes.
Batman isn't like Spider-Man or Superman who can just swing or fly around looking for crime. Batman actually has to go out and work at solving a crime. You're not just going to run into the Joker, Penguin or Riddler by chance, you've got to figure out what they are up to and that takes detective work. -
It is indeed possible to like 2 different movies. Shut....the....FUCK...Up!
-
I would say Superman. But if you think TDK is the standard, I'm cool with that. Just don't mention it in the same breath as Godfather, Citizen Kane or Taxi Driver.
-
Desperately trying to convince people it was a bad movie. Good luck with that.
-
'lop, i like that bat has to do detecting to solve crime. and it's cool to see him do just that(even for a brief moments) in nolan's films, but this label of "world's greatest detective" shoved around is.. to me it feels gimmicky and just unnecessary. like you said, sherlock holmes would be more apt for the title.
-
eman1111, you're assuming that bat would meet ironman head on out in the open at daylight. out in the desert at noon, sure, ironman would toast bats in 2 seconds.
but you think bat will be pulled into that kind of scenario then you dont give the bat much credit for his brain. much more likely is the bat would confront ironman under cover of darkness, and he would come very well prepared. -

@Continentalop, Supes gets beat up by a green rock, shit wont wo
by saen
Only way Bats has a chance is to come up with some form of weapon that will actually hurts IM. And worlds greatest detective, detect all he wants it wont save him from the missle to the face.
-
Iron Man has a sequel......we will never see a TDK II.
-
havent even click the post button. i was saying... a punch to stark's face would knock him out cold. all bats got to do is remove the helmet off stark, then land one suckerpunch. the bat can sneak up on anybody, he's trained to be stealthy and patience, and to be aware of surroundings. that's his strengths and he will utilize them. ironman on the other hand, never feel the need to have to sneak up on anyone, hence his own mentor could sneak up on him in his own home.
-
Can I recommend to you Batman Begins, great movie but not as good as Dark Knight.
-
piece of junk movie is it.
-
Regarding the first one, I think Favreau, Marvel and more so RDJ did really well in bringing a second tier comic book character (from a pop culture perspective) into the spotlight and doing a great job.
You look at DC, where is the Wonder Woman movie, finally getting a Green Lantern movie, where is the Flash movie? Where is another Supes movie. -
TDK kills off any remotely interesting people.
-
Must get some kind of sexual pleasure from hating popular things. I can understand a rational reason for not liking IM or TDK or both. However, mostly what I read is drivel coming from souless fucks who must not find any joy in life at all. Hating something just to hate it. Like I said, I can respect an honest opinion, but I find those lacking in a lot of people on here. As far as those people bitching about Harry, the guy loves movies. Sometimes a little too much, but at least his heart is in the right place. He cares about film. As opposed to those on here who revel in masochistic misery when the see a movie.
-
Spider-Man I had the iconic villain, the Green Goblin, and William Dafoe. And it, the villain, the costume, the acting, didn't cut it. I GROANED when I heard that the villain in S-M 2 would be Doctor Fucking Octopus. Christ on a cracker. But it worked. REALLY well. That tells you that any character is capable of working or not working depending on the acting, the script, and the direction. In the right hands, Marvel could churn out a Dazzler movie that would work. Or it could be the silliest fucking thing since Travolta's wig collection. You never know.

You morons actually think anyone will be talking about TDk in 10
by tradeskilz
No they wont. Its a good batman movie but its UTTERLY forgetable.
-
which is undeniably awesome. Wish TDK would have been 'The Joker' instead of a batman movie.
-
That is why I don't trust modern comic book fans. Doc Oct has always been iconic and great in my book (just read Bill Mantlo's run with the character during the early 80s). But Green Goblin, he only become Spider-Man's greatest foe after he killed Gwen Stacy and THEN DIED. If he truly was iconic, they never would have killed him off in 1972. His greatest as a Spider-Man villain stems from one storyline (but a great one).
Not a dig at you, but just something that I realize about comic book movies - the fans just seem to want them to go with who is popular/cool at the moment (Bane, Doomsday, Venom, Black Mask, Hush, Morlun, Apocalypse, etc) instead of the best villains through the characters publishing history. -
I agree it is a gimmick to a degree but I still like the title because it reminds us and the writers what Batman's roots are. He first appeared in Detective Comics and he should never lose sight of the fact that, despite being a superhero in a comic book, he is still very much part of crime/detective fiction. Even the campy 60's Adam West Batman remembered that part, with every case being Batman trying to figure out what the arch-criminal was up to and piece the clues together (or solve the riddle or puzzle).
Whether he truly is the "World's Greatest Detective" is debatable, but I think "Detective" should always be in Batman's job description. -
I said you missed my point SLIGHTLY. Methinks the talkbacker doth protest too much...
-
Not sure which of your post is directed at me and which isn't. I am not a 'modern comic book fan'. To me (IMHO, of course) Doc Ock wasn't a great villain over the years. Stories usually involved him menacing or trying to marry Aunt May. Green Goblin was there from the beginning, had the near ultimate story line killing Gwen Stacy, then dying, and was carried on by Harry Osborne and briefly, Harry's psychiatrist. And if Venom and that fucking black suit had never shown up in a Spider-Man movie, I would have been just fine.
-
But I am a big Doc Oct fan. Yeah, he tried to marry Aunt May, but he also was the first villain to beat Spider-Man, led the Sinister Six and was the Master Planner, once threatened to kill Black Cat and Spider-Man (and came very close to succeeding) and once threatened to kill 4 million people in NYC (by secretly poisoning the Daily Bugle in a plot that would make the Joker jealous). To me, Doc Oct is like the Penguin - a character who has had a lot of unnecessary baggage added to him over the years because of bad writing and people unable to get over his non-Kewl appearance.
And I am not doubting that the Green Goblin had his moments, but after Norman Osborn was revealed to be the Green Goblin, Stan Lee and Romita realized he was very limited (unlike Doc Oct or Mysterio, Green Goblin never had "master plots" that you could build a story around) and so only three story lines after he was unmasked they killed him (and in the process, made him an even greater villain than before by having him do the unspeakable).
Now Hobgoblin, there is a fucking villain (you forgot to mention him in the Green Goblin legacy). -
Doc Oct killed Captain Stacy as well (first Spidey foe to draw blood, if you will).
-
I remember that Capt Stacy died and that Gwen blamed Spider-Man for it, but forgot who the villain was in that story.
-
...over a piece of a building, and Captain Stacy died pushing a kid from out of the falling rubble. So it was an accident, but Doc Oct was the one responsible and everyone blamed Spidey (of course, if Doc Oct did it intentionally then he would have to be killed just like Green Goblin for Gwen Stacy - I love the days when villains were held responsible for their actions).
-
Or did they actually defuse it from being Ock's responsibility? Didn't S-M do something to take away Ock's control of his arms and that's what led to him bashing away at the side of the building?
-
judging by my typing skills...I am having a stroke.

Different films, ultimately different themes and different unive
by sithtastic
It bears repeating but why are we propping up a completely false dichotomy between TDK and IM2? I know I'm going to be redundant here, but work with me people. Aside from being comic inspired sequels starring billionaire playboys the similiarities end there. TDK whether you liked it or not engaged themes dealing with order/chaos, terrorism and law, and hero whose forced to make unpopular decisions in a city that could very well resent him. By contrast Iron Man and now its sequel, IM2 is about a pseudo celebrity defense contractor and womanizer alcoholic who makes himself even more a celbrity when he suits up to become a superhero who is anything but anonymous. Both films have their own merits and I like both franchises for engaging the themes within the confines of their respective universes (oh...and I'm a big nerd). Why is it too much to ask that we view Iron Man within the context of the Marvel universe (now set to expand) and TDK within his much more condensed and tight Gotham universe (set to expand in the future)?
-
wonderful ginger glow from the bottom left. Harry you must be proud!
-
The Joker - the Agent of Chaos, has massive dislike for 'schemers' and admits to having no plan.
What does he spend the majority of the film doing? That's right - planning and executing some extremely complex schemes, some requiring split-second timing; all requiring meticulous planning.
That's not chaos. -
Because the fuckwits are let out of their cages daily to post their drivel. Morons like tradeskilz who call great fare like TDK "forgettable", or other fools posting what Batman "really" would have done or said. Plus the fanboy contingent who camp on one side or the other and hate simply because they can't see anything objectively. Iron Man was a great film, with serious flaws IMO at the end with Stain and his instant ability to be able to use the suit and match Iron Man (considering most of the movie was about Stark learning to use the suit). TDK had it's flaws, but it's not only a great comic movie, but a great film as well. It stands on it's own. And when dealing with comic material, you will always have holes that are created by the very material you are wrapping the film around. Hate TDK all you want, pretend it was "nothing special", you are within your rights to do so, I've never met anyone in person that has thought anything negative about TDK (at least on a whole), which proves the old adage that "the internet is full of booger eating donkey dick lickers"...or something like that.
-
My post was full of Irony (Man).
-
http://www.imdb.com/chart/top
Dark Knight is at no.10, Batman Begins is at no.107. Iron Man is not on it.
BB>IM and DK>>>>>>IM, ok? Stop trying to hate on DK just to make IM seem better. I enjoyed IM too, no need to bash another movie. -
thats not a plothole thats the type of character the joker is. he contradicts himself u never kno wht he going to do
-
I cordially disagree; we only 'don't know what he'll do next' in the same manner as you don't know what I will do next, but I don't bill myself as an agent of Chaos, or profess my hatred of 'schemers' and people with plans.
The Joker of TDK is actually very methodical (and supernaturally lucky) when it comes to planning and scheming, and he proves himself to be one step ahead of GCPD at every turn.
The Joker isn't 'chaos'; at best he's a bit unorthodox and a bit strange and eccentric. -
Thor.
-
Is one word.
-
"Latino Review (among several others) verified the post-credit sequence showing SHIELD agents finding Thor's Hammer in the desert on Tue/Wed of this week. Someone even managed to get the entire sequence on Youtube for a brief while. This site has posted NOTHING regarding this.".. is MANY words.
-
Jokers objective was to stir up chaos. To throw society into complete anarchy, break down civilized society, and prove that people would turn into animals. Doesn't mean he won't contradict himself to reach his goal.
-
Yeah it was a great film. But, Its not the roadmap that all other films compare to or need to aspire to.
go home and jerk off to your Heath Ledger poster while wearing your Target Halloween Batman costume.
This is about Iron Man.
The only similarity these films should have in any way whatsoever is Source material. -
Agreed, but he claims to hate 'schemers' and people with plans, and is referred to as chaotic and unpredictable during the film, and by writers & producers, when actually he methodically excutes complex plans which would have taken extreme intelligence and planning to pull off. It doesn't sit well with his image of a transient chaotic clown.
I do not dislike TDK or the Joker's portrayal in that film, I am just one of those people who would not call it the 'be all and end all' of comic superhero films. -
that everyone keeps talking about?
-
but now everyone hates it
-
So, man, what the hell? did she got one in the face or not? Why is everybody closelip on it? Can't anybody just say if the punch happenend or not? Is that too much to ask?
-
That's the most fucked up crazy idiotic thing i have read all week? Everybody hates TDK now? GET REAL, MAN!! You don't like it. YOU! Deal with it.
-
" [TDK] Its not the roadmap that all other films compare to or need to aspire to"Actually, it is.
-
But I am pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

Over the Godfather, Citizen Kane, Bicycle Thief or the Rashoman?
by continentalop
Right...

Coffee time.

I like Iron Man and both Nolan Batman flicks. I enjoyed Iron Man for being more 'light' in nature and loved RDJ in the Stark role.I love Nolan's Batman flicks because they are darker in nature.I see no point in trying to compare both characters or the movies or say one is superior to the other. They are different types of superhero movies, and I enjoy both.
-
I disagree completely. Well with the exception that I feel all Superhero films should take the property seriously as it has been presented in the source material (the comic) and not attempt to reinvent it thereby destroying what made it interesting to begin with.
that said, Not all Superhero films should look to TDK as the roadmap. not all characters share the same motivation as Batman. not all characters rely on the same devices as Batman.
To approach every Comic flick with the whole It needs to be more like TDK to be successful Is to do a disservice to both the comic and its fans.
Take the FF films for example. No they were not that great by our standards.
but, they followed what the comic provides very well (Doctor Doom aside) the comic is basically a situation comedy steeped in high adventure. The movies presented exactly that. 8 year olds loved the hell out of it. That was the intended audience.
The Second film came even closer to the comic. Most of what it presented was pulled directly from the earlier issues of the series.
Now Imagine the FF films were made in the same vein as TDK. At first you may thik that taht is cool, but in short order you would come to the conclusion that They just ruined the FF. Because they are not and never were intended to be Dark and Gritty.
spider-Man would be an epic fail if done in that fashion.
So would Hulk, but to a lesser degree.
DAREDEVIL is a character that should and could follow the mold of TDK and be highly successful.
So I will stick with what I said about allsuperhero films not needing to try and be the new TDK. -
@ Rippley...
You only see the first person stand up, but for the record, the whole audience gave them both a standing ovation. And yes, it was a pretty sweet moment when Jon, and then Robert ran out on stage, not to mention the bad-assery of the movie! -
Inquiring minds want to know.
-
That's funny.
-
I can't recall any adrenaline inducing moments. The acting was great, but the action was easily forgettable.
-
I would say that was a memorable action piece.
-
As another talkbacker said before, and I agree, the police escort sequence was worth the price of admission alone. I also love the scene where Batman is working his way through thugs in the club to get to Maroni. I don't know why but that is just a great sequence.
-
Both great movies that we really didn't deserve. They are like lobster and steak - both great for different reasons and you can't go wrong with either of them.
-
TDK as a roadmap to filmic greatness. Because it is. TDK is the movie that inspires. It's the movie that reminds you why you fell inlove with cinema in the first place. It's the kind of film that inspires kids to became filmmakers later in life. A roadmap indeed.
-
Great analogy. There's something genious about it's simplcity and dead-on accuracy. Good job.
-
I would say that TDK is a collection of great scenes one after the other from begining to end. Rarely has a movie been so wholesome great as TDK. It exists on a high rarefied statosphere of filmic uber-quality.
-
This whole Batman Vs iron man thing. You'd have a man kicking and punching a robotic metal suit, which is going to fuck up his hands and probably break a few bones in the process, not to mention, if you've got someone who's aiming to kill you with his bare hands...and you've got pin-point targeting guns, rockets, and the power of fucking FLIGHT...why would you NOT use it? Bats is toast, no matter what crazy judo he throws into the ring.
And the TDK vs IM argument: Jesus christ, you fucking cynical douches. Quit trying to turn every movie that happens to be about a comic book character into a fucking competition. -
so he can equal IM.
-
The vast majority of the critics and the audience disagree with you. It's a bona-fide Classic, and easily in the top ten of the best movies of the decade. Maybe even THE best movie of the decade.
-
...If you just think it is good but don't think it is a masterpiece? Is there like only two camps - TDK Die Hards and TDK Haters - and like no wiggle room or anything?
-
Totally. I actually just rewatched Batman Begins the other and the first act of that movie is some of the greatest film making I've ever seen in a superhero film, aside from Katie Holmes. I love the way it just draws you in and then builds and builds. I swear that movie just gets better as time goes by.
-
50% of all Iron Man 2 talkbacks is about TDK. Guess how much Iron Man 2 is going to be in the Shadow Of The Bat (Batman 3) talkbacks?
-
How many people have seen Iron Man 2 yet? It is hard to discuss the movie when you haven't seen it yet.
-
one of the DC vs. Marvel cross-overs. It pretty much ended up in a tie. It took place in the sewer or some place where Bats could hide and take Cap by surprise.
-
I liked both IM and TDK. I have always been more of a Bats fan than an IM fan so I enjoyed TDK better. Both have their flaws but both are enjoyable. I'm very much looking forward to IM2.

actual plot development (even if its payoff is 2 years away)
by strosmer
The Avenger plot developments are what I find most interesting about the Marvel movies. It is like watching the Avengers assemble, rather than stories of the characters themselves. I see all this as a cinematic experiment, an evolution in media - movies produced and released in a similar manner to comics. And for me, the glimpses of each new hero, and the little drops of things to come, are the funnest aspect of watching these movies.Even the weakest of the bunch, Letterier's Hulk, was a real treat on my second viewing a couple weeks ago. I was thinking to myself, there's great foreshadowing of what Cap will do - superfast running, giant backflips, extreme fortitude (can survives HULK’s kick, which should be repeated in Avengers), accelerated healing, etc. Then Stark appears at the end of the movie and says a line (can’t remember it) that plants the seed for his confrontation with Cap over leadership of the group. Those moments are carrying me right along, as are most of the performances. I’m watching a cinematic comic book, not a movie per se. It sounds apologetic, but in that light, these Marvel movies are very enjoyable. The whole Marvel cinematic universe can begin to stem from the Avengers franchise, hopefully with a minimum of recasting and rebooting. Or you’ll have projects like Defenders introducing new characters, while repeating characters like Hulk. Possibilities are endless, especially if Disney works out a financial model that pumps these puppies out year after year. Can't wait to see where it all goes, and willing to suffer the bumps and bruises of these introductory films to get things to the next level, to get the Marvel universe churning on-screen.Off topic, a thought on media evolution – video games will soon be movies in which you play, or rather are, the protagonist, walking through a virtual reality and interacting with AI characters - the ultimate playground, like The Veldt, or the holodeck. Comic books are becoming movies. We are already playing other protagonists (Uncharted 2, Heavy Rain). Our bodies are becoming controllers. 3D is advancing. Video games, especially FPSs, on a projector are already immersive experiences. With these crazy new toys on the way, everyone gonna be a superhero, or a Sith lord, or whatever. How the hell is any work going to get done?
-
movies doesn't have closure. What about Ra's al Ghul's henchmen who know Batman's identity from BB? Where are they in TDK? Bale's Batman just punched a few here and there and took off to go after Neeson's Ghul on the train. For all we know, Ghul's cronies got away and could just snipe Wayne when he's playing golf, or something on his property. And in TDK.. that set-up where Wayne goes inside the room and gets framed was a little sloppy. Why didn't the set-up people just wait and then take out Wayne and the target? Also, what was the motivation of the co-worker finding out that Wayne was Batman? t call it a masterpiece. The writing and vision was just a tad bit sloppy.
-
I didn't like it that the writers of BB had Batman's signature wrist blades come from Ghul's ideologies. Anyone who is still alive and associated with Ghul will know right away who Batman is just by looking at his wrist blades. It's cool if you liked/loved BB and TDK, but don't call it a masterpiece. The writing was a little sloppy.
-
I did assume most of us have seen it by now. If not, fair point. It'll still be interesting to see how much IM2 turns up in SOTB talkbacks...
-
Some of the things you just pointed outare obscure and unimportant to the overall story.
the gauntlet blades for example have never once been explained in the comics. so to give them some sort of history in the film, they tied them to his Ninja training. Which makes sense because the design is very eastern to begin with.
Movies take liberties. When you are trying to make a fictional character into a plausible protagonist, you start looking for little things that can add weight to the character. -
Classic.
