STAR WARS EPISODE TWO: Natalie Portman talks about when filming for her will begin + more

Published at:  Oct 04, 1999 8:27:50 AM CDT

Wondering why there is nothing but old news on the front page? Click here and find out!!!

Well the following wound up coming from Natalie Portman via a 'unnamed' magazine interview from the junket Q&A on ANYWHERE BUT HERE, but because good geeks were uh asking questions we got a brief tidbit on STAR WARS EPISODE TWO. But ya know what... One of my favorite aspects of this whole little universe of STAR WARS info is... now that we are on SWE2 & 3... well the rumors are starting again from scratch. Below, the Ocelot speculates that Portman's Amidala character was supposed to die in episode 2... but from the sound of the interview Portman will be in Episode 3, so he supposes that's where she must die.... Folks... She may not die at all. In fact, who knows... Portman probably doesn't know for sure. I mean, it's not like George is particularly forthcoming with information to actors. I mean... in Jedi the whole sister bit came out of left field for most involved... George is a tricky fella... So forget all that you think you KNOW... I'm sure there are twists we can't really believe coming up... I mean... gosh.... I bet the Emperor will be revealed in the next one to be that damn Taco Bell dog...

Hiya Harry,

I'm a long time fan of the site and such a fan of your work. You've
taken almost all of my passions and formed them into one web
site...very, very cool.

Well, here's the first thing I've ever come across that even resembles a
scoop because I live in Detroit and not much happens here...well, excpet
for that evil Delta City project. (Although when "Polish Wedding" filmed
here, I met Gabriel Byrne and made him admit "Cool World" sucked.)

OK, my best friend works in New York for a magazine I can't mention or
else I'll get him in trouble. But on saturday, he attended a
round-table interview with Susan Sarandon, Natalie Portman and Wayne
Wang about their new chick-flick "Anywhere But Here."

Apparently, all three of them were just friendly-as-hell and Ms.
Sarandon talked glowingly about Tim Robbins' "Rock the Cradle".

Well, I guess the fun really started when my buddy started asking about
Episode 2. I guess Natalie was very cool and said she loved talking
about the films. She's in college now (she wouldn't name which one) and
talked about how she's trying to have a normal college life.

She does her own laundry, writes papers, etc. She cracked the sudience
up when she described how weird it was to go grocery shopping with her
friends and not being able to find a Pepsi can without her face on it.

THE SCOOP is that Ms. Portman said that she's committed to a normal
college schedule and that she's been assured that she'll be filming her
role NEXT SUUMER so she can be back to school in the fall. That's the
first I've heard about a confirmed start date for filming.

I guess Natalie also said that she's really excited about the next two
movies because Phantom Menace was basically just a set-up for the cool
movies to come. Funny thing is my friend said that when she talked
about the next two SW films, Ms. Portman made it sound like she'd been
in both. Who knows? Maybe Amidala won't bite the bullet until Ep III.

Well, that's my scoop load and I think I've blown the whole thing.
Thanks for keeping up the site, harry and I hope your back feels better.

Your fan,

The Ocelot

    by madmartigen

I didn't think that Luke & Leia were to be born until the 3rd movie. I don't see how she can die in the 2nd. Also, is it true that Dana Carvey will be playing Darth Maul's disembodied legs in ep 2? Rumor has it he sneaks up behind Yoda and breaks wind on him ("When 900 years you reach, look as good you--sniff, sniff--died in here, something has!")

A month or so ago on Access Hollywood...

    by glaze

I saw a segment on Access Hollywood where they interviewed Natalie Portman and at that time she knew nothing about the Ep.2. I don't know why she wouldn't say where she was going to college in this interview he refers to because its fairly common knowledge that she is going to Harvard. She also said int he interview I saw that she was not going to film any more movies once she starts college except for Ep.2 and Ep.3 until she is out of college. In fact, she was wavering on whether or not she really wants to be an actress. She said it was fun for the last several years but she thinks there may be other things she would rather do in her life after college.

RE: Eternal or more thoughts on Amidala's death

    by darkhan

Your idea about having Amidala die during childbirth is interesting but, unfortunately, can not be. In ROTJ, Leia clearly states (when talking with Luke in the Ewok village) that she has memories of her mother (that she was sweet or something like that). So it seems impossible that she would die so quickly (Leia would have to be at least two at the time of her mother's death). Then again, maybe the Force enhances early childhood memories, who knows...

What the fuck is that about... you figure she's a bitch... cause of a interview. Man ... that is sad. we don't know her .. you drip! And now the kid ... Jake... what the hell? Ego?! Of course he's gonna have a ego ... he's Dark Vader ..or atleast he was.... And Lucas, of course he has a fucking EGO!!!! he has a right to a certain degree... Do I believe these people are saints? Hmmmm can't answer that because I don't know them, other than from their work!!!!! And I don't care!!!! Hell I don't even why I responded....

But will Carrie Fisher be back in 3 ?

    by robinp

Y'see......the thing here is, that in order to maintain continuity, part 3 has to end with Darth Vader in hot pursuit of Leia, who has the Death Star plans, therefore, Carrie Fisher will have to be seen (Danish Pastry hairdo and all) in part 3. How're they going to get around that then ?
Lemme see.........Fisher will be in her late forties, early fifties then, playing the daughter of a girl in her mid twenties !

The mind boggles as it has never boggled before.

On another unrelated subject, what happened to that totally smokin' talkback about the rules ? It was here yesterday and now it's gone !

    Leia in EpIII

    by corleone

Just to comment on the previous person's post, there would probably be no need to have
Carrie Fisher as Leia (with Darth Vader persuing her) for continuity's sake. If you think about it, not every episode started exactly where the previous one left off. Empire starts a good amount of time after ANH, and RoTJ doesn't begin immediately after Empire.
Thus, the scrolling preamble catches us up on what has happened between episodes.
Therefore, EpIII could potentially end a couple years before ANH starts, perhaps with the plans being stolen or some such.

    by robinp

Corleone, you have a valid point, BUT.......Empire finished with a sort of cliffhanger, which was resolved at the beginning of Jedi, in which we were made aware that our heroes were mounting a rescue expedition.
Does it not make sense that ep 3 should at least feature a perhaps CGI young Carrie Fisher ?
Something to think about........ at least, it makes for an intriguing visual.

Hey man ... I was not trying to flame you, but don't you think the word "BITCH" is kinda strong... and you can't truly get someone's personality from a printed interview... a taped interview? Maybe... Hell, you believe everything you hear in a interview, well check out what Mr. Kevin Spacey was dragged threw recently ... he clears it up in PlayBoy... If you felt that I flamed you, lets make peace okay! I really mean it .. I do. I just hate the word .. BITCH!... I mean if you met her and she pissed on you or called you a fucking maggot! Okay.. I'm with you...hell I'll help you hurl rocks at the lil'thang, but I have read some interviews with her in it and I'm not saying they are the same ones you've read and lil' Ms. Porter seems nice enough... from what you can get from a interview... look I didn't know the Lucas thing was a joke?! How can we truly know who someone is from a interview. See ... you think I'm a ass and I think I'm a nice guy... everything cool between us. "We're not cross are we Eternal?"

RobinP, I see your point, but if we were to follow that scenario, would not Episode II have the big cliffhanger, and Episode III
the big resolution? I hope you agree, you don't want to find a pair of cement shoes now.

    Leia's memories

    by garabato

In ROTJ, Leia did say that she remembered her mother. She said that she was sad.

I imagine that the kids will be born at the beginning of Episode III. Anakin will begin to fall to the dark side and Obi-wan and Amidala will have to spirit the kids away to other lives. Maybe at the end of Episode III Amidala will try once more to sway her husband. As darth vader explains that "Anakin Skywalker is dead" he spares her life and lets her leave. She lives a short time in mourning for the husband she has lost to the dark side.

    but most importantly...

    by loki trickster

...Jar Jar Binks must die an extraordinarily painful death at the hands of every major and minor character in the Star Wars universe, whether they be alive or dead. "Messa gonna die?! How rude!" Or if Lucas still wants to keep this character, there's only one way he can redeem him without me personally hunting down Lucas and carving him up: Darth Binks. If Jar Jar gets over his clumsyness by going over to the dark side, then Lucas might live...or at least get a stay of execution. "Give into your hate, okey day?" Plus, this has the added benefit of turning Jar Jar into a badass, while still allowing him to die an extraordinarily painful death...preferably losing one ear, then the other, then his tongue, then...well, you get the picture. -Loki

    Jake Lloyd

    by lester diamond

Eternal, we must think alike because I always end up agreeing with you. I saw Anakin on one of those stupid Entertainment Tonight type shows. He was being interviewed for a guest spot on "The Pretender." Anyway, this kid came off like a huge asshole. He was like, "George [Lucas] is a great guy. I'm really going to miss working with him." "I play the hero." Then he started dissing "The Pretender." I don't watch the show, so I can't say if he has a right to do so, but he said something to the effect of, "I'm just doing this in between movies. It's pretty cool, I guess." I hate this kid. And did you see him at the MTV Movie Awards?

    Jake Lloyd, redux

    by loki trickster

You don't even have to watch the talkshows to hate Jake Lloyd...just watch the little prick in SW:TPM...the only comfort I had with his performance is that eventually he'll get hideously scarred and eventually electrocuted...I'm all already getting happier. Why couldn't that kid from "The Sixth Sense" have been found earlier by Lucas? -Loki

Wait a fucking minute...you guys are just pissing on this kid! Even if Lucas found the kid from "The Sixth Sense" that kid would have blowed ... the man can't get a average performance out of anyone ... The Portman girl, Action Jackson, the Rent-a-Jedi ... Dark Maul ... Hell when I really think about it , that CGI creation of his HAD the best performance ... and that's sad .. so leave the lil'tard alone and focus your HATE on the Jedi God ... Look I KNOW the boy is ten years old ...look I KNOW that he's a bit dry... look WE all KNOW Jar Jar is NOT the greatest creation under the sun and WE ALL KNOW THAT YOU ARE 35 CENTS SHORT OF A QUARTER! I hope that the next two chapters are just more interesting than the first... it's a bit early to be discussing this stuff anyway.

    Life and Death in SW

    by alessan

Back to the original subject: Death has never really been a hindrence for characters appearing in Star Wars, is it? I mean, Obi-wan's dying in EP4 never really prevented him from popping up later on in the saga, so who knows about our dear queen. Anyway, I'm rooting for Ms. Portman - she IS my countrywoman, sort of.

Why not do it like this ??

    by matt of onissa

why not have Ep2 as anakin turning to the dark side...and obi wan taking away the twins at the end, then in the third one he could show han solo having some kind of tiff with jabba/the empire on tatoine, m/while the twins are growing oblivious to this and thier destiny...this would ridge the gap between 3 & 4

    forget the original trilogy

    by joey jojo

Why does everyone feel this need to see Leia stealing the plans or Han fighting with Jabba? Use your imaginations to picture what it looked like, because that is the best you will ever see. Lucas is not gonna shoot this filler stuff 25 years after the first Star Wars. This trilogy is supposed to be about the early stuff, not whats happened in the year before A New Hope. Oh, and about the Leia remembering her mother thing - who says the mother she remembers is even Amidala? Maybe she remembers the queen of Alderaan (if there is one) or whoever her surrogate mother was. Hell, we don't even know that Amidala is the mother yet.

    The very end

    by alessan

I agree completely wih the last couple of posters: the two trilogies are independent, and will probably have a 20 year gap between them. I mean, we don't have to be force-fed everything; a lot of what makes an epic is the gaps, the feeling thast so much is going on we can't possibly be shown everything. However, all that nonwithstanding I wouldn't be surprised to see a short coda at the end of ep3, zipping forward some 30 years with a visit from some of the original SW characters (Luke, Leia, Han). The end of ep3 will probably be incredibly sad and depressing, and we'll have to be reminded that everything turned out OK, eventually.

    Generation gap

    by yossarian

Come on, Slone and GunRay are on the money. Nothing of MAJOR importance happens between the birth of the twins and Luke leaving Tatooine. The emporer just sits on his throne for 20 years and Darth Vader is his henchman for keeping everyone under thumb. The end of Episode III is gonna have to be "a series of down notes". Anakin gets turned to the dark side and stuffed into a leather life support system, the Emporer takes the throne, Amidala may or may not die, the Jedi definately die, Yoda ends up in an adobe in a swamp, Ben dissapears into the desert, leaving Luke with two farmers, and we pick up there with Luke roughly 20 years later. That's how its gonna end, mark my words.

    The Queen's true identity

    by dr strangelove

Ever since before episode I came out we have all been under the assumption that Natalie Portman's character is the mother of Luke and Leia. Yet I cannot recall anywhere where this is expressly stated by Lucas or any other authority.

Yes, Lucas has made it pretty clear that the next movie will involve a love story between Anakin and the Queen (and Kenobi in some fashion). But I think Lucas is playing on our assumption that she MUST be Luke and Leia's mother. Furthermore, there is no reason to believe that she does not live on into episode IV.

I have a theory that doesn't provide all the answers but offers an intriguing possibility: Queen Amidalia is none other than AUNT BERU.

Think about it. Anakin turns to the dark side. Obi-Wan smuggles the Queen to Tatooine where she starts a new life as a simple farmer with Obi-Wan's "brother" Owen where they raise Anakin's son. It would certainly add some depth to the dinner table scene with Luke. Watch it again.

Of course, in this situation she could actually be Luke's mother. This would make Luke's lines with Leia on Endor even more interesting. He asks her if she has any memory of her mother because he does not, yet she was right there under his nose the entire time: AUNT BERU.

Her death would be even more tragic: slaughtered by troops sent by her former lover/husband on the planet they first met while searching for the plans carried by droids that were his childhood companions.

    It makes my head spin.

    My Theory...(Long take)

    by dlhstar

A few months back I was talking to some people about Anakin's fall to the dark side and everyone's theories involved Death of Shmi, Betrayal by Obiwan(romance with Amidala??) and so on. I came up with a theory to tie in the clone angle. What if it isn't something that Anakin doesn't do? What if it is something he actually DOES do? What if one PART of the CLONE WARS was the gradual replacement of powerful people with clones loyal to the Sidious and killing the originals? Let's say that Anakin, comes bursting home to see Amidala hovering over a dead Padme and 'Amidala'. Sensing that she is not the real Amidala, he strikes her down, believing her to a clone. However after her death he sees she is wearing the snippit he'd given her as a gift. Racked with guilt over killing his wife he is convinced by Maul that the Jedi allowed this to happen, that the Senate allowed this to happen, and he believes. However WE learn that the Amidala killed by Anakin was actually Padme (Hence his sensing it was not Amidala.) The real Amidala was the Padme on the ground (and who should be dead) who is being kept alive (barely) by the force power of the twins she is pregnant with. Oh well, more wasted Bandwidth.
