Vern abseils into THE DESCENT PART 2

Well, they probly shouldn't've made a DESCENT PART 2, but the one they made is not too shabby. It has just the acceptable level of shabbiness. It's by rookie director Jon Harris, who edited the original THE DESCENT and to his credit not DOOMSDAY. I respect them for using the archaic "PART" in the title, and using it correctly. It sure does pick up right where the original left off (well, at least where the American version left off) with the woman Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) back on the surface running around like a Texan after a chain saw massacre. A search team is already looking for them (because Juno is a senator's daughter) and when they find Sarah she's so freaked out she doesn't remember what happened. So they kind of bully her into re-descending with a couple of cops and spelunkers to find her friends. There are many enjoyable elements. The monsters, known (only to me) as wufs (weird underground fuckers) are still cool looking when they get to them. It starts off slow and quiet and works its way up to some savage woman-on-wuf cave fighting. There are several worthwhile moments of disgustingness (done the old fashioned way, without the computers). It seems to keep a strong continuity with Part 2, so the bodies are still in the same places and in one stand-out scene they're forced to use a hanging corpse to swing across a gap. At least one character thread from the first one is continued and brought to fruition. There are a couple surprises. On the other hand though it's not quite as well-executed, not as perfectly claustrophibizing, and of course it doesn't have the same freshness factor. Because it's Part 2. If they were gonna continue the story shouldn't they have had Sarah start out where she got to at the end of Part 1, so there's more progress? In Part 1 she went through alot and grew into a bad bitch who handily beat a wuf to death with a bone, but in this one she starts out timid again, and it's a ways into the movie before she gets that demeanor and knowledge back. That feels like an unnecessary setback. We don't deal with nobody believing her, because she doesn't remember the thing they wouldn't believe her about it. We kind of start over. And what about some escalation? I'm not saying turn it into an ALIENS ripoff, but wouldn't it be more fun to change shit up than to just try to re-do the same kind of thing with some men this time? Instead of coming down unaware again and having to use inadequate spelunking equipment as weapons again and using the same nightvision camcorder again because they find it on the ground, how 'bout they come down with an idea what they're in for and come well-equipped? It would still be difficult to deal with those blind bastards, especially if they cut deeper into the nest and got overwhelmed. And they can't blow the place up without it all coming down on top of them. The good news, I think, is that they don't introduce some new Superwuf that's bigger or has different abilities. I mean that's bad in that it's the same shit again but it's good in that it would seem like a pretty forced sequel formula if they did it. Maybe we could've seen some babies though, or wufllings I believe they're called. I bet they'd be adorable. I wonder if they are human baby sized or if they fit inside a thimble. Also good news: they don't reveal that they're part of a secret government program or from space or any stupid shit like that. I guess they do kind of reveal... something. Well, I'm not sure I get what happens late in the game. But it's something. If they decide to make a part 3 I hope it's about they catch one of those things and try to use it as a police witness, but one of the detectives is real scarred and lonely because he had a son who died in a car accident so he takes it home, puts clothes on it and starts to home school it, and then it turns out to be a piano prodigy or a really good baseball player or something, but unfeeling state bureaucrats try to put it in a foster home or a zoo and there's a big emotional court battle. But the state wins so they realize they have to put him back underground before he gets taken into custody. And then once a year the detective goes spelunking and meets his boy in a special place and they play catch. Then in part 4 he doesn't show up one year because he's been set up for a crime he didn't commit so the wuf has to come to the surface and pass for human long enough to prove he's innocent and get revenge. Or they could just have some different people go into the cave and get eaten. We'll see which approach they prefer. Anyway, THE DESCENT PART 2 is not a total embarrassment. It's on DVD Tuesday, same day that my new book Yippee Ki-Yay Moviegoer!, which may or may not be a total embarrassment, comes out. thanks everybody Vern www.outlawvern.com

    by Henry Fool

It would have been so much better to begin with her still in the cave, like in the original. That doesn't mean she'd have had to stay in there, it would have been awesome to make the sequel her story of continued survival, probably by having her encounter members of the rescue crew and further exploring the cannibal cutlure, taking us deeper into their lair. They dropped the ball by using the edited ending. I won't see this piece of crap and wish it had never been made.

    Wufs, heh

    by Gwai Lo

Yeah I wasn't too hot on this one. The amnesia device kind of made it irreversibly retarded right from the get go. I guess they needed a reason to get her back in there, but conveniently forgetting everything that happened in Part 1 is kind of lame. And the cops decision to bring her down there was just foolish on the cops' part, the whole investigation was kind of illogical. And some of the character thread holdover stuff from Part 1 was kind of a stretch. The non-plot parts (ie the horror and action) were pretty faithful to Part 1, but not much new overall.

So it's "part 2" in the same sense that...

    by kevred

...rewinding a videotape back to the beginning and watching it over again is a "part 2" to our original viewing?
Not sure I get the strategy. If you haven't seen the first one, all the close tie-ins to the original won't work so well. And if you have seen the original, why would you want the same story over again?
If they think the original didn't get enough attention, this seems like an odd way to address that. if people see this one and get curious about the original, they'll go back and see basically the same film. Hmm.

    ending of part 1

    by Vern

I forget what the original ending was, but when it was released in the U.S. it was with a new ending, and that's what the DTV sequel follows up on. Or at least the one I saw. Maybe they made a different one for everywhere else in the world.
For his part Neil Marshall was so angered by the changed ending that he decided to punish humanity by making his next movie be fucking DOOMSDAY.

jarv you've actually made yourself look fucking stupid by mentioning the american ending you dum dum and realistically nothing suggested she did it all herself. we have the dead animal bones, the fact other characters see the monsters first. the fact the main character actually does kill someone (or so we think). the fact both of the main women are in the sequel and the humanoids are still down there... shall i go on. only a twat would think it was in her head.

His is a completely valid interpretation, and only a twat would disregard it in a film as nuanced as the British Descent.
Only a twat would take the soulless hackery of the cash in sequel as a reflection on the first film.
Only a twat would EVEN consider the redundant "both main women are in the sequel armgument"
So, I guess you are that twat.
Cretin.

    DTV

    by Vern

I didn't realize that this was released in theaters in the rest of the world. That's weird that they would give it less of a release in the one part of the world that had the ending that they based the sequel on. Doesn't make alot of sense.
I gotta admit if I had paid to see it in a theater I probly would've been a little harder on it. When looking at it strictly as a DTV sequel it seems passable, but I can see why you guys would be disappointed.
Anyway, just wanted to say that. You can go back to calling each other twats and cretins over your different interpretations of the ending. Just don't let it go on for thousands of years like the disagreements over interpretations of religious texts.

I hate to agree with something that Lost Jerk has said, and i'll have to wash myself and take vaccinnes afterwards, but there is one point he is actually right (i can't fucking believe i'm writing this!), and that's the notion that THE DESCENT does entertain the idea that much of what is happening in the movie is a demented delusion. Director Neill Marshall entertained that idea, and he even shot a scene when Sarah is in the hospital after her car crash where she would see the sinouette of a crawler at the end of the corridor. It's that scene when the corridor lights then start to shut down as if persueing Srah. But then Marshall changed ideas and CGI removed the crawler form the scene.

Marshall has always been pretty welcoming of the notion that the wntire mvoie migth just be an allucination from Sarah while she's in a comma after her accident. Or that she is allucinating stuff while in the cave and she got mad, lost any sens eof reality and she started killing her spellucking pals. But it seems that evne if he deosn't openly contradicts those notions, it's not what he thinks what is movie is about. Seems his idea is that what happens onscreen is what it is. Literally.

But all this intepretations is what makes this movie so much fun. The movie is smart and subtle enough that it can give rise to this interpretations,a nd still offers enough reasons for them to have some plausability. It enriches the movie. Makes it a far more rewarding experience then most other horror movies around.

My view of the movie is that what we see is what you get. But i'll not go down and dirty on anybody who has a more ellictical interpretation of that movie. The movie certainly feeds them enough reasons for their reasoning. I don't agree, but i'll not put it down either.

Man, i love THE DESCENT! Love it, love it!

What happeend with THE DESCENT and how it was re-edited for the american market irritates me to no end. This people from an american company decided that tneir own compatriots were too dumb to accept the original tue ending of that movie and decided to recut it to resemble more a typical slasher ending. This americans think that their fellow americans are a bunch of retard idiots. That shit irritates me. Infuriates me. It's not just the hubris, which is insulting like hell, but that made them change one of the best endings in recent years, and thus fucking up and ruining a whiole movie. a whole VERY GOOD movie. I tell you, the ending of THE DESCENT is one of the most important reasons why that mvoie raises from pretty good to excelent. That ending elevates the movie like few do. I'm not dismissing anythignt hat went before. The movie is very good through and through. But the ending as it is, inthe international release, not only subverts the false ending, but it completly elevates th whole movie, raising it to an operatic level that just the perfect emotional resomance to the whole story. It is the ending that should.

The american distributors in their unmeasurable hubris, they decided that americans who go to the mvoies are idiots and thus ruin a movie with a dumb decision. Well, the american distributors got one thing wrong: it's not the american audiences who are the idiots, they are. I'm not american, and what this distributors did fills me with contemp and revolt. How dare they?

Well, I guess I'm a retard then, Asimov

    by Vern

I don't know what the politics were of them changing the ending, but I personally think it plays better ending without the "fuck you, nobody gets out alive, ha ha ha suckers" ending. I think it's very satisfying to see her get out of there by the skin of her teeth, and to just throw her back in is kind of a cheap shot.
As for DOOMSDAY, you have read enough of my stuff to know that I don't like action scenes that are all shot in closeup with edits done at random and that give no sense of geography or movement. I also hate movies where the story and characters are boring so you wait for the action scenes but then when the action scenes start they're so terrible that you can't wait for them to end. So I don't think it's uncharacteristic of me to hate DOOMSDAY.
DOG SOLDIERS was okay though.

Clown. Why am I arguing with this submoron? Do things have to be so unambiguous for you? Stick to Hostel.
Oh, and fuck off goatfucker. I don't need or want your support.

Yeah, it was a strange call. We ignored it, but it was a fairly large hit in continental Europe so expect to see The Descent 3: Even more Soulless coming soon.
And what about the chickenshit ending of this pile of wank?

It's quite strange you would rather prefer the watered-down, compeltly missing the point ending of the american version over the real ending of the movie. If a character survives by the ending of the movie or not shouldn't be the point. The point should be what is the best, more true emotional beat to finish that tale. And that's the original, true ending, not the american one.

People have used the "but it's not a happy ending, she gets crazy by the end of theamerican ending too". Oh yeah, and as oposed to what? The happy ending in the international version? in that you have an unhappy ending where the main character completly loses any sens eof reality whatsoever. But the great beauty of the international ending is it's complexity. It's complex the same way the ending of BRAZIL is complx, in that you have two endings in one, both a happy and an unhappy ending. From our point of view, it's unhappy and sad because the main character will die while insane. But in her own head, she is reunited to her beloved child. That's an ambitious ending. that's a smart ending. And mroe important of all, it's an ending that's true to her character. It's an ending that serves the character and story mroe then serves any supposedly desire from us as audience. The international version of THE DESCENT is a movie where you have to be participative, you have to go with the road with the movie. The americna ending makes the movie a passive experience that jsut repeats something done a million times before and compeltly undermined all the great work that went before.

As for DOOMSDAY, frankly, i have a better opinion of it then you do. The close up quarters fight scenes in the movie didn't bothered me all that much. Sure, i would had prefered them in a mroe traditional presentation, but frankly, of all the fight stuff in close quaters made in today's movies, the stuff in DOOMSDAY deosn't bother me. It doesn't bother me because even if i took that as a fault, there's till too much good stuff in that mvoie to get over it. If anything, ym major problem with DOOMSDAY is the editing outside the action stuff, because it's too fast-paced. And the obstructive and intrusive music composed by that guy Tyler Bates which i really don't like at all. I really am not a fan of the editing of the non-action scenes in DOOMSDAY. It's as if Neill Marshall had lost confidence in his skills as a filmmaker. He would had done better if he had edited DOOMSDAY as he did DOG SOLDIERS. That was one very good edited movie.

And it's great to know you liked DOG SOLDIERS.

It's not often that i disagree with an opinion of the Venerable Vern, either. Except about Steven Segal, there's yet a Segal movie that i liked.
