A look at TITUS

Published at:  Oct 02, 1999 4:02:28 AM CDT

Alright, this is the film that Anthony Hopkins was working on when he made his infamous.... I'm Not Doing This Anymore... announcement. Well, Anthony seems in better cheer nowadays... Rediscovered his muse.. what have ya... and yippee for that. Meanwhile, the director of this film, Julie Taymor, is the one that created that amazing LION KING broadway play that is just... amazing, at least from what I've seen... wish to God I could see it. From these two pictures I think you can get a bit of a grasp of the extravagance that she is bringing to this telling of Titus Andronicus... a story that many have felt was overblown in past tellings and as originally written. Well, she seems to be designing the hell out of this thing and I love great design work in films. I've got my fingers crossed on this film. The initial word that came out of the brief clips shown up at Cannes were quite positive and lavished much praise upon the look of the film.

    Nostalgia?

    by radd

This certainly looks like it could be an interesting film. Think it will harken back to all those old films about Rome?
I hope so, always got a kick out of them.
Can't wait to get more info.

    Titus is Shakespeare..

    by grandegueule

A gladiator flick? Titus Andronicus is Shakespeare's most over the top Grande-Guignolesque revenge tragedy.

I saw the long trailer in Cannes at the festival. It was more interesting than any film there in or out of competition. But I have heard no news about its distribution other than that it seemed to be having a hard time being acquired by a studio due to the violence (and Elizabethan English). Titus Andronicus is the original slasher flick - rape, mutilation, cannibalism, orgies.. it's hard to believe a film adaptation could be dull. Particularly with the actors concerned, in addition to Hopkins and Jessica Lange, Alan Cummings, Angus MacFadden, James Frain and Harry Lennix are in it.

Taymor claimed in Cannes that she and Hopkins had kissed and made up and that he liked the film, but he did not show up at the press conferences for the film though Jessica Lange did.

    Anyone know what's going on?

    MadHatter, seriously?

    by miss direction

The sets and costuming just keep evolving over the course of the film, era-wise? Reading the syopsis at their site, I really couldn't get a feel for the span of time covered by the story - is it years, decades?

    how about the language?

    by loki trickster

Is Shakespeare's original language kept for this script, or are they just keeping the basic plot and "updating" it with modern language (kind of like "10 Things I Hate About You"...which I actually enjoyed...it wasn't high quality, but Julia Stiles was damn good). The reason I ask is because I've heard Shakespeare's language is the only redeeming quality of this over-wrought bloody revenge tragedy. Even the people I know who love Shakespeare tell me to keep away from this play. So what's gone and what's kept? -Loki

Which one is Titus Andron...however it's spelled...

    by all thumbs

Wait a minute...is this the play where the guy serves his nephews to his brother or is that some Greek tragedy I read last semester...Geez, why hasn't there been a King Lear adaptation for the big screen yet?

    Could be very cool.

    by clockwork taxi

In my opinion anything with Anthony Hopkins has potential. He's had a few stinkers, Instict and Mask of Zorro, but i'm sure this will be good.

    Oh, THAT Titus Andron...whatever.

    by all thumbs

I checked out the synopsis on the Titus page...this is going to be one bloody movie. I wonder how they are going to handle the Lavinia rape scene. If it's too graphic, there could be backlash or it could just be unnecessary like so many horror flicks we see. I'm sure many will agree that what is suggested is far worse than what may be shown. I can't wait for the final feast scene, though. If Harry truly loves cannabilism in movies, he's going to consume this with much relish. (Pun intended)

    titus adaption

    by gojira22

in my humble opinion and from the production stills ive seen - i think this adaption this fantastic. not only is titus one of shakespeares most interesting and filmic plays with its over the top violence etc but the director - the lion king woman - also is bringing a distinct vision to the production. she seems to be borrowing from jap anime like fist of the north star in some design respects - titus and other generals ride standing up in the back of cadillacs and things... looks really great. to all thumbs: regarding a film adaption of king lear - check out the japanese master akira kurosawa's film 'Ran'. its king lear in feudal japan... a brilliant film.

  • or maybe less, if I do ever watch it, it'll be on video, so I can fast forward through the boring chunks. It just screams "this is art, we're making art, we're all such fucking artists..." egads! Bring back the T&A of Caligula, anyday.

    King Lear

    by saltbagginsam

Hey All Thumbs, if you want to see an adaptation of Lear go grab a copy of Kurosawa's "Ran". It has it all, including some of the most kick-assed battle scenes ever put on film.

    Yes, Indeedy, Ran was awesome

    by miss direction

I just think that spanning 2000 years of sets and costuming over a story period of a couple of days or weeks might be rather disorienting. If, like me, you have to get used to the language first, then interpret what's going on, having Titus in anicent armor one scene and then in Florentine doublets the next might make for an bewildering (but interesting) experience. Although I'm reminded of the old marital arts flick Fantasy Force with Chinese Scotsmen alongside cowboys fighting Nazis...

    Titus

    by 123...simple?

The reason why this film looks so great is because one of the world's greatest Cinematographer's worked on this film , Luciano Tovoli .
