    by crow3711

Gonna start tomorrow and watch all three in a row I think. I feel like, if its anything at all like the way the characters in the wire were handled in the beginning, this will really help me learn everyones names and faces and the roles they play in the world. Watching week to week from the beginning would be too hard to keep track of, i thought.

I'll give you Treme and Sons of Anarchy (and I'm gonna throw guilty pleasure Fringe in there too, as it's been amazing the past four weeks), but I've tried Mad Men several times and, other than the luscious looks of Christina Hendricks, I've found it to be the most undeservedly overhyped show this side of 30 Rock. Not a bad show, but not nearly worth the loads of praise critics and the Emmys throw on it (30 Rock, however, IS a bad show - Tracy Morgan just ain't funny). Just an opinion? Yes, but nevertheless, Mad Men bores the shit out of me, and I'm not alone in thinking this, either.

    by mrd

Direction is solid, too. But right now what we're getting are vignette more than stories. I know how Simon works, that he does "chapters in a book" more than episodes, and its impossible to judge a season until the book closes. Still, I'd like to get some sense that there is an overall narrative to what we're seeing, because without some direction, my interest in these slice of life stories, no matter how well told, will begin to wane.

I have HBO for The Pacific right now so I thought I'd DVR Treme and watch it when I cancel my service. All HBO shows take 3-5 episodes to get into anyway so if it's good, I'll just do a stretch of that many. Kinda excited to watch it though, I've heard good things.

Mad Men is The Best Show On TV

    by crow3711

It's not even realy a debate. I mean, you can not like it, or say whatever, but that doesn't change the fact it's the best written show on tv in years. The acting is impeccable, the story arcs perfectly plotted, and the overall vision and uniformity of style, really feeling like the time and place intended is remarkable. I know some people find it boring, and call it soap opera....but it's just character work. Along with Breaking Bad, it's the most quality show on tv. 30 Rock on the other hand is probably a little over rated now. Maybe not it's second season...but lately for sure. All Just my opinion of course, but AMC is killing it. The Prisoner remake was pretty bad, but Rubicon sounds promising.

    absolutely boring

    by aka_gern_blanston

Sorry, man, but it's just too boring to be "the best show on TV". The acting was great in the English Patient, and it got awards, but that didn't stop it from being one boring, plodding mess of a movie to have to sit through. The same goes for Mad Men. It's just absolutely boring, and the show at times feels like a high class aaron spelling production, what with the who's cheating on who and who's backstabbing who subplots. Just not for me, and I'm far from the only one to feel that way. Hell, 24 is more interesting and it's basically the same plot every year. But definitely not the best show on television. Not even the best show on AMC (That IS BBad).

Quote: "Mad Men is The Best Show On TV"I totally agree. It's the most subtle, slow-burn on television and it's already given us at least one iconic character that will be talked about for years.I really don't care if folks find it "boring". That's their tough shite. Conversely, I've never been able to sit through one episode of BREAKING BAD and I find SONS OF ANARCHY to be nothing more than a guilty pleasure.

    Best Show on TV

    by dudemandude

I love The Wire, Lost, BSG, but I haven't seen Sons Of Anarchy, Madmen or Breaking Bad. Treme is good so far, I enjoy it at least, especially the music. I was deployed to do relief work after Katrina (US Army), I remember patrolling for looters and stray dogs through New Orleans, so I feel a sense of familiarity with the show on some level, I can relate to what I'm seeing to a degree. It's starting slow, but I think deliberately so, we'll see how it unfolds. Anyway, what type of shows are Sons of Anarchy and Madmen? I'm always enthusiastic to learn about a new show that will blow my mind. What makes those shows as good as The Wire? That was a helluva show right there!

    by jim jam bongs

    1) The only drug use in question has been pot (which I, as well as many, feel is no big deal and should be legalized). 2) John Goodman is in this show probably because he's a native of NO, as are many of the actors who appear in this series. 3) Drop the poltics, buddy. Nobody is blaming Bush, Republicans, or white people for anything in this series (thus far). These characters are just trying to get on with their lives in the city they love. The only character whining (and a lot) is Goodman's, who rants about the Corps of Engineers. Grind your axes elsewhere, buddy.

    Mad Men

    by dustinbones

This show is not for the A.D.D. crowd. It's characters are fully realized, complex and flawed. For someone who appreciates shows that explore the psychology of human behavior, Mad Men is a God-Send. I just picked up the The Wire (complete series) and I'll be sure to give you my condescending (condescending means: "to talk down to") opinion of that show also. ;)

Nothing Is As Good As The Wire DudeManDude, But....

    by crow3711

Mad Men is still insanely fucking good, in its own right. However, unlike The Wire, which I think inhabits a world that is so inherently intersting to almost anyone, what with its danger, drugs, gangs, cops, etc. It's an exciting world, filled with rich characters and complex, realistic storylines. its perfect. Well, Mad Men is the same way, except I think the world itself is what turns certain people off. If you wanted to say The Wire is about one thing...you might say "the city of baltimore" in general, then you would say, in general, Mad Men is about the sixties. Specifically, it takes place in an advertising agency on Madison Avenue, New York City over the course of the early sixties (so far). Inherently, not nearly as exciting as watching Omar walking through Hamsterdam whistling his merry tune, etc, but its one of the most engaging shows I've ever watched if you get yourself invested in the world. These people are full, three dimensional, flawed, fascinating people, and combined with the times it takes place in...its simply fascinating. But if slow-burn, melodrama-esque character studies and meditations on what life in America is, or should be, about isn't your cup of joe...look elsewhere I suppose.

    by dustinbones

S1 finale was a an emotionally tough one to watch, hell, I'll admit, my eyes were watery (if a sales pitch for the Kodak Carousel can break me down, what does that tell you about the level of writing on this show?). But for my money, the S3 finale was so much damn fun, that one may get my vote.

    Mad Men n more

    by 7cal

I have S1 of Mad Men on bluray, and have watched 4 episodes but just really have a hard time getting into it. Got the set over a year ago now too. I guess I'll have to give it another try, but Christ it certainly isn't "entertaining."

Spartacus on the other hand: man what a show. I get that it's the complete opposite of MM: action, tits, gore, and basically a breakneck pace. Awesome continuity-heavy story too. That was a show that started good and just got better each episode, and one of the most satisfying season finales ever to boot.

Funny how there's not much on regular network TV to watch any more: still following Lost (mainly because it's the last season- if they didn't have the end point set, probably would've given up by now), but otherwise the top shows are: Dexter, Spartacus, True Blood. Next year is going to be sweet with Game of Thrones and Walking Dead.

One other one I will have to try is Breaking Bad. Hear good things and it looks good. One question: is it fairly continuity-heavy as well, or is it more 'drug deal of the week'? That's what put me off Justified: thought it was going to be more of a continuing story ala the Shield, but after the first 3 eps seems to be 'case of the week'.

Then again, it's a completely different kind of story, but I do love the whole "novel" feel that the show has, it's still very episodic, but the whole "visual novel" thing is definitely working; it's a good technique, far better than week to week cliffhangers.

It's that simple and that blindly entertaining if you're looking for an assault on your senses. No show has ever had fight scenes like it, Sex scenes like it or gruesome gore anywhere near it's level. In terms of writing though, it's leagues behind The Wire and Mad Men.

and I'm a fat nearing-middle age white guy from the north with no musical bone in my body ... so it must be good.

    Treme is fun.

Its nice to see this story told through a series like this, not in a lame movie or on CNN or FOXNEWS. All the characters are interesting and I like how everything is slowly melting together. Great idea making it about "life in NO" instead of a heavy-handed political soap box about Katrina and "The Man".

and Breaking Bad is great- i love how still, after all these episodes the show continues to shock and amazing. Every week it gets worse and worse for Walt, Sky and Jesse. I can't imagine where this is all going, but I'm loving the ride and I'm going to hate to see this show finally end.

Bryan Cranston seems like one cool dude. I'd wanna hang out with him over John Hamm any day.

    WTF?

    by nice marmot

. . . someone said they can't sit through 1 episoded of Breaking Bad??? Fucking A, that's nuts. LOVE that show. As for Treme, love the music, love the production but it just didn't make the cut because we have no fucking time to watch as much as we used to. Even w/ a DVR . . .

    Marmot

That's exactly how I feel about Breaking Bad. It's clearly a very good show, but just didn't make the cut for me over shows such as Treme.

    Shitty Music?

    by gotilk

It's not the kind of stuff I seek out either, but that music is the backbone of almost everything you DO listen to. Show some respect! The show is very much a slow burn. It's picking up by episode 3. Goodman's character is finding his feet. The piano player with the violin girlfriend is getting very, very kind of creepy in some way I cannot put my finger on. I'm convinced the person calling the cops on our "musician" playing his music too loud will end up being someone he respects OR the new stripper in the neighborhood. I'm caught up in it now. Someone said it's unfolding slowly, more like chapters in a book. I agree. It's worth the time and effort. The whole thing is coming to a head in some way and Goodman's wife-lawyer is connected to almost everyone. Just watch.

    Breaking Bad

    by gotilk

no.. I think Walt will kill the cousins when they try to kill his brother in law, further spreading his reputation as some kind of magic-god bad-ass. This will complicate his relationship with his new boss. And I'm not sure if I trust his new lab assistant. He'll either turn into his super-sidekick or betray him.

    Still skipping the music

    by frodofraggins

I like the music, I just don't want it interrupting the goddamn story. It's fine if left in the background but not when it's all that's going on. It's as annoying as Tolkiens Poems in LOTR.
