Exclusive: Will there be Airbendin' in all three dimensions? That's right, THE LAST AIRBENDER is being 3Dafied!
Hey folks, Harry here - while I was on my recent venture to the fabled Hollywoodland - and ever so slightly before I wandered into a screening room to behold IRON MAN 2, I had the opportunity to spend a rather choice amount of time with a certain senior official within the Paramount world that chatted my ear off regarding how M. Night Shyamalan and Paramount were playing footsie with the notion of bringing 3D to THE LAST AIRBENDER. I think we can all collectively hope that it works out better than CLASH OF THE TITANS... and ultimately the choice to 3D or Not laid in M Night's judgement - and frankly that does encourage me. M Night is a details kind of director and if they do do it right, like with NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, it could be quite a spectacle. This is something they've been working at for a while now, but they just got to the point where they feel confident in letting the world know that M. Night's THE LAST AIRBENDER will be airbending in 3D. The post-3D process got a big "YUCK" out of CLASH OF THE TITANS, will M. Night and the brilliant eyes of Andrew Lesnie have the time and the eye to make THE LAST AIRBENDER's foray into 3D an outstanding affair? I certainly hope so, though if it doesn't work out - quality wise - I would recommend looking at just committing to 3D at the beginning or not at all. You'll all be seeing a new trailer for THE LAST AIRBENDER on IRON MAN 2, it is pretty incredible looking. Unlike anything we've ever seen from M Night. This is a very big looking movie. I never really got into the animated series, but my nephew and sister are going nuts on them all right now. So I can't really say much about what I saw... I loved the magical creatures, which were absent in that first trailer. The film is beginning to look very very interesting, even in 2D.

Harry - watch the cartoon. It's spectacular all in itself. I just recently watched the whole series (Netflix Instant season 1 while I bought s2 and s3) in the matter of about 9 days. It's *that* good. Season 1 is the slow one - season 2 they just go batshit on the story, action, comedy, and characters.

has been nothing but good. I've seen mostly just handfulls of episodes from season 2 and on, but the story, action, and character arcs were all really good. Plus the last episode had that anime staple of normal kid becomes super powerful god-thing.

The cartoon is glorious. Imagine if someone showed you just the scene in Yoda's hut from EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and nothing else from any of the other movies. You'd be like "It's just some dude talking to an ugly little puppet." AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER is a modern masterpiece of sustained action/adventure storytelling. Sure, the first 6 episodes of the first season are a little more kid-like because the show was still still finding its feet. But as it went along the story, characters and the world deepened immensely, and by then end of it I was convinced that this was the greatest original fantasy world put on screen since the first three STAR WARS movies.

comedy, romance, fantasy, action, religion, along with different races and clans, while giving each character such depth that you fall in love with the heros AND the villains. I love this world and Shyamalan poses as much threat to it as Lucas does to his own serious. I fear for The Last Airbender.

FEARS CONFIRMED.<p>With CLASH being a huge financial success (the first weekend, at least), I was really worried they would try to throw 3D into this. I hope they learn from CLASH.<p>M. Night has never made a bad... looking film. Still excited for it - AIRBENDER is some of the best television of past decade. If you haven't seen the show you are missing out.

i thought after crouching tiger hollywood would have bigger balls. i've seen the complete avatar series. best cartoon/anime series i've seen yet. love the world, love the characters, love the story arch, just love the whole thing. but aang is not a caucasian! <p> it's clear from the design of the architecture and costumes of each culture what races these guys are. the water tribe is inuits/eskimos, the fire japanese, the earth chinese, and the wind tibetans/chinese. doesnt mean oyu have to get an actual tibetan, or an actual japanese to play the part. but at least cast someone that LOOK the part. instead we got caucasian, caucasian, caucasian, and an indian for the japanese lead baddie. so... FUCK YOU SHAYMALAN! and FUCK YOU HOLLYWOOD!

is that some of it was shot in 2d and converted. (I could be wrong, but I do believe I recall hearing that much of it was shot in native 3d, dual or stereo camera) If the right amount of time and care is spent, not only can the converted footage look fantastic, but the same process can be used to fix issues with native 3d footage as well.

We've complained, at the point of casting and all throughout filming, to the utter indifference of Hollywood. I would prefer the film to uphold the spirit of diversity of the show, but it doesn't. It's bullshit. I am still interested in seeing how it plays out.

Possible, but I really doubt it. It would be a huge budget jump. For them to film the whole thing one way then go back and completely change techniques on certain shots/scenes wouldn't make sense.

Should we take Paramounts push to convert this film to 3D as a sign that Airbender sucks? If it's a good film in it's own right, then it does not need to be in 3D. Fact is, 3D needs to die a quick and painful death. It's a chance for studios to extract an extra 3 (and in some cases 5) dollars more per ticket and show a film that is mediocre at best. Are people really going to pay $17/ticket for Cats and Dogs 2?? Avatar, while breathtaking, was boring and uninspired. Up was excellent when I saw it in 2D and I saved money. Shyamalan may be a 'details' man, but if the details he focused on were story and character Paramount wouldn't have to cover up a piece of shit with a gimmick like 3D.

I just started watching the cartoon series recently...

...and it IS rather good. Not as great as some have claimed, but again, I'm only two discs into the first season (watching through Netflix). As for the movie, is Shammy was just directing from someone ELSE'S screenplay, I'd feel a lot better about this. At least J.N. Howard's score will be great...

That first trailer kinda got me thinking about the film - but I hadn't seen anything to made me think this was a full on epic Fantasy. But in the upcoming trailer - there's some imagery that just fucking is killer. The Falkor looking thing, then this strange lizard beast thing - and a couple of others... LOOKED REAL DAMN GOOD. The large establishing shots just had a sweep that felt kinda classic. Check out the trailer and see how you feel. To me, all I thought Airbender was - was a bunch a guys waving their hands around throwing elements at each other and flying around. This new trailer opens up the world to Dragons, lizard steeds and flying cat-dog dragon thing. And the cities look cool as well. This just feels like a completely different M Night - I'm very curious.

Just a spectacular, firey, Hindenburg-type disaster. Especially now that they are selling out, even more, and doing this 3D crap. Question: How do any of these movies plan to stay in 3D theaters more than a week or two? If every movie wants to releae in 3D...there just aren't enough theaters. None of them will last more than a week or two before the next one comes out. This 3D crap will stop when one huge budget movie spends even more doing 3D, and then fails monstrously to make any money. People will realize 3D doesn't automatically mean more money at some point. Can't wait for that day.

As long as the 3D is selling, there will be more of it. Right now the studios think that 3D is their salvation because the vast majority of films released in 3D have done well. Send them a message with your pocketbooks and see the 2D version instead.

This movie has to be be good. I'm willing to bet after his last couple movies this is basically his third strike if he gets it wrong. He's capable of good movies, regardless of the Ratner-esque trend to hate him right now.

And I was always ridiculed by the talkbackers here. While the silent-to-sound and b&w-to-color transictions took place in a natural way to provide a better experience to the audience, 3D has not. And I got TWO arguments to prove it. First, films with sound took place AS SOON AS sound was technically available. Color films took a little longer due to cost, but were also available as soon as the technology made it simple to shoot it in color. 3D is around for DECADES. Decades. No one wanted to touch that damn thing. It came and went as a fucking fade. And i Don't remember audiences being charged MORE because the film had sound. Or color. Did the talkie version of Hells Angels cost more to see than the silent version? I don't remember getting a discount to see Elephant Man or Schindler's List due to the absence of color. Folks, 3D is being used by studios to PUSH CRAP DOWN OUR THROATS and charge extra bucks. If audiences are tired of the same crap Hollywood is doing, let's wrap it up in 3D - NOW it becomes a must-see experience. A fucking expesinve must-see crap. And some serious filmmakers such as Nolan will be FUCKING FORCED to shoot in this gimmick format. Fuck this. And I know 99% of the TBs here will disagree, but I say, fuck you all as well. I stick with my principles.

I think you're onto something larger, a trend in business (that hit it's peak just before the financial crisis), where companies basically expect you to just give them money without providing any service/durable goods in return. The key word is durable... stuff that lasts. More and more, we're served shit on a plate throughout ALL forms of consumer/service goods and 3D-ifying movies that already suck so they can charge more money is a GLARING example. But I can go on for days... even as an apple fanboy, I have to say, working as an editor on another Nick show recently, I'm amazed at how 8 out of 10 things I go to do in Final Cut return error messages, just plain don't work (burning a DVD? Really?) or I have to go on the web to find a fix. Sloppy code, removing shit that should be de rigeur at this point (firewire on macbooks), and basically having an attitude of, "Fuck you, you NEED this, just buy it, be a good consumer and shut up." Same goes for our federal and state governments (especially if you live in NY, CA, or NJ) over the past 30-50 years, but that's a whole other rant.

I guess it all depends on how the action is edited. Clash's 3-D was terrible because the movie was cut very quick and ferociously. If this film is being done with long, sweeping, beautiful shots, then it might work out. And yes, I kinda like Shyamalan. Unbreakable was pure genius, period. Every director has flops, so don't judge him on that. This could very well be his redeeming film. I hope so, because if I'm wrong and this fails, then I'll look like a total moron for believing in M. Night. Of course, I already do, but it'll just be worse. :)

I really don't mind it going to 3D, or holographic, or whatever the fuck. OK, I DO mind being charged more for 3D and having to watch a movie with plastic goggles, not being able to move my head too much or I'd see double images and get headaches. But let's assume the technology matures well enough and we get to see 3D movies like regular color films. Great. When it gets massified, when it's common to see media in 3D, then it will stop being a gimmick and GOOD films will be praised and BAD films will bomb. Until they invent the next fade, the next Cinerama, the next Smell-o-Vision, the next Sensurround. Because now audiences are being attracted to movies for the wrong reasons. Today 3D IS a fucking gimmick. It is. Maybe sound was a gimmick back in the "Jazz Singer". But good silent movies still beat bad modern films. Which one do you believe is a beter film, Metropolis or Transformers 2? The 3D technology is being pushed towards stupid audiences who believe a movie's flaws are justified because you can see depth. This is where the industry is making a WRONG turn. Now, Nintendo will release a 3D version of Nintendo DS. And the company's president, Iwata, has mentioned several times: the technology MUST SERVE THE CONTENT, not the opposite. They made a mistake first with Virtual Boy. Now, they want the content to be supported by the ability to see 3D (without goggles, must I say). With Hollywood, it's CRAP. Because it's easy to film CRAP. In 3D. And money FLOWS IN. Fuck good movies. Fuck intelligence.

The studio decided to make this 3D prior to Titan's release, so you should blame Avatar for this (althought I doubt Titan's box office made made them think twice about it).

Haven't gone to 3D movies and, given the premiums, won't be going anytime soon. I took the kids to Clash of Titans in 2D simply because Train Your Dragon cost almost twice as much. And I made this decision KNOWING Dragon was probably the better movie.<p> Shee-it I preordered my IM2 tickets and those cost 10 bucks a pop. And one's for my kid.

3D will increase revenues by 40 percent, which means paramount believes the movie will not make money without 3D.. Least that's how I see it. If they thought the actual product would be better, they would have started this earlier, not 2 months before the movie comes out..

If it's not shot in 3D I'm not going to pay extra to see your shitty post processing effort to make it into pseudo 3D. The 3D in Clash Of The Titans was laughable, it was like someone was behind the movie screen making certain areas of it stick out further than others. It was SO fake. The studios are going to kill this whole 3D cash cow thing by getting greedy with it like this. No one is going to enjoy the 3D in this just like nobody did with Clash.

...and REALLY hate the latter ones. All I care about at this point is seeing if he can even MAKE a movie without a "twist" ending. I'm semi-familiar with the original show and I'm hoping he pulls it off well. Nothing about any of his previous movies points me towards believing he can, or can't, do this material justice. Because, unless he adds a damn twist ending, it's nothing like anything he's done before.

Learned my lesson with Clash of the Titans. Airbender appears to have a lot of fast-moving and fluid effects, which look great in the trailer, but I suspect none of them will translate well to 3D.

No, it was intended to be 3D from pretty much the start (I think because of how so many kids movies are now going that way).<br><br>And, like I said above, the decision to have Airbender 3D isn't something they decided to do this week, they decided that months ago (maybe from the start) to do it.

That's my verdict. <p> I admit I have only seen a few films in the new 3D, actually only UP, AVATAR, and ALICE, but I have to say in every instance I disliked the 3D. Maybe it's better in other theatres, but seemingly there's always some of the wrong-eye light leaking through those filter glasses, for many objects are seen with those slightly displaced echo images. Or is this a result of how normal stereoscopic depth perception is not fooled by 3D cinema, your eyes trying to focus on something in the foreground or the background, while there is no real depth to the screen? <p> All in all the flaws of the technology for me outweigh the benefits of the 3D effect. Also you could get the impression that the more Hollywood is obsessed with 3D depths the shallower the scripts are getting. Imagine if the script of Avatar had had the balls that District 9 had, now that could have been a movie.

Get a grip, people. If they cast "true to the cartoon" and brought in 4 lead characters all of eastern origin.. and they couldn't act their way out of a paper bag.. you'd be bitching about their poor performance instead of their skin color. Sometimes you have to cast someone you can easily work with and can fill the role, and sometimes you have to work pretty quick to get primary casting done. I'm sorry there wasn't a world search for the perfect inuit or chinese actor to portray whoever-the-fuck they should portray in this film. Get over it and see the movie, or don't see it and continue to watch the cartoon. Life will carry on.

A friend and I went to see How to Train your Dragon, the problem is that because the movie is Marketed as 3D we assumed that all of the theaters were showing it in 3D and that maybe they would be smart enough to at least tell you if the theater you just picked was 3D or not. So the problem is that 3D is not EVERYWHERE yet and so it is getting even harder to find the theater you need to see it in the format you WANT.

In the old days they tailored the action on the screen to make the most of the 3-D effect, it was cheesy when someone would extend an omlette pan toward the screen and go: "You want eggs?" back-and-forth, but 3-D WAS cheesy, it worked but it didn't redefine film visuals, it was a novelty. Now the movies are made using a conventional approach to the photography and they just split off flat planes and put fake distance between them and more boring and umimpressive it could NOT be. I paid big bucks to see Avatard in 3-D and after 5 minutes didn't notice any depth at all, it made no difference whatsoever, except to my wallet of course. This new fascination with 3-D SUCKS and I'm voting with my choice and ignoring 3-D after-effects until they get the message and toss it on the scrap heap of kitsch from whence it came. ...*snicker*...wallet..."you gotta keep your big bills wrapped with a money clip." "They're all one's...."
