‘It Wasn’t A Car Crash!!’ Learn What’s Ahead On FRINGE!!

Published at:  Apr 22, 2010 6:48:08 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Another very strong episode last week with “White Tulip.” Producers were smart to put somebody as good as Peter Weller to work as the time man.

Fox says of tonight’s episode, titled “The Man From The Other Side”:

When two teenagers on a date turn up "dead" at an abandoned warehouse with the three puncture wounds to the soft palate -- a trademark of the shape-shifters -- the Fringe team investigates the evidence as well as the motives of mastermind Newton. Upon discovering a shape-shifting embryo, Walter returns to the lab to conduct further analysis, and Olivia and Peter head to Massive Dynamic for answers. Meanwhile, Peter reveals a family secret to Olivia as Walter struggles to recall what Newton knows about "building a door." Guest Cast: Sebastian Roch as Thomas Jerome Newton; Ryan McDonald as Brandon; Peter Bryant as Ben McCalister; James Pizzinato as Dave; Katie Findlay as Jill; Shawn MacDonald as Daniel Verona; James Tsai as David Wu.

Next week brings “Brown Betty,” which appears to be the musical episode:

While Walter deals with some very upsetting news, he tells Olivia's niece, Ella (guest star Lily Pilblad), a fairy tale that includes musical performances by Olivia and Agent Broyles. Guest Cast: Ari Graynor as Rachel Dunham; Michael Cerveris as September; Lily Pilblad as Ella; Ryan McDonald as Brandon.

Newton returns again in the May 6 episode, titled “Northwest Passage”:

Peter teams up with a local law enforcement official, Sheriff Mathis (guest star Martha Plimpton), on a serial murder investigation with ties to Newton (guest star Sebastian Roch). Meanwhile, Walter copes with the possibility of being sent back to St. Claire's, and someone from the "other side" pays a visit. Guest Cast: Sebastian Roch as Thomas Jerome Newton; Martha Plimpton as Sheriff Tracy Mathis; Christine Chatelain as Krista; Patrick Gilmore as Deputy Ferguson; Juan Riedinger as Craig; Paul Herbert as Tom; Marie West as Heather.

The May 13 and May 20 episodes comprise a two-parter titled “Over There.”

Fox has already renewed the show for a third season.

9 p.m. Thursday. Fox.

Next Week Will Be A Silly Waste of An Episode. Can Not Wait.

    by crow3711

But my guess is it will be hilariously entertaining. I can't wait to see Fringe the musical, even if I assume that means there will zero mythology or actual storytelling that drives the narrative. Just gonna be really weird, crazy, trippy, hilarious sci-fi musical.

    White Tulip...

    by scors54

May stand as a textbook example for all similar shows--those with over-arching "mythologies" coupled with stand alone episodes--of how to combine the two so they both serve to drive the ultimate story forward.X-Files, while brilliant in spots, often lost its way so often woith its mythology that only the stand alones were coherent. But it seems Fringe has learned the lessons from that and explained just enough so we can understand and want to move forward with a clear idea of, but not total knowledge of wherre we may be going, while even using its stand alones as separate set pieces, but relevant to the whole. With "Peter" and "White Tulip", the show has gone from pretty good to brilliant, IMHO. And John Noble is a huge part of that and better be nominated for an emmy for this season.

    The Musical

    by pogue__mahone

Don't discount plot advancement and character development just because it's a 'Musical' episode. Look at what Buffy did. A fun, slightly goofy, episode that COMPLETELY used the songs to propel both the plot and over all season arc forward.

just watched it yesterday. Him opening the White Tulip at the end hit me as much as Picard playing the flute on Inner Light. Just very subtle, yet poignant. Moments like that do more to develop character and motives than a whole page of hackneyed dialog.

    by gotilk

..we can assume Belly will be kicking the bucket soon.. or the "alterniverse" will cease to exist and drag him down with it. Sad. Wish Nimoy would get some growth hormone treatments or something and stay with us a few more years. I was far more excited to see him in Fringe than the new Trek. And yes, White Tulip was some of the best TV of all time. Weller was incredible. And everyone is right about Noble. He deserves(d) an Emmy. Especially for White Tulip. His scenes with Weller were phenomenal.

    If it's Fringe

    by vikkimarsdale

...and they bring someone over from the other side and make a point to hide his identity but in one scene pan and almost show his face but then cut to a different scene with Walter, it probably means that the man who came over is Walternate. Not 100% certain, but it seems likely.

If it was Lost, that would be what they'd expect you to think, but it definitely wouldn't be.

If it was FlashForward they would show you some distinguishing characteristic like a ring Walter wears or the back of his hair and assume you'd recognize him if you've been paying attention.

If it was V they'd just show you that it's Walternate - musical stab - and that would be the final scene of the episode.

    by vikkimarsdale

after "Olivia discovers Peter's not from here and Walter asks her not to tell him" and then "Olivia's gonna tell Peter and decided not to" and then "Walter decides to tell Peter and decided not to" I was worried that they were going to try to milk this all season long. Instead, suddenly Peter figures it out on his own as part of the plot, not just exposition or a revelation during a conversation.
And ironically Walter was going to tell him, just didn't have the time.
Very good, very good, like some of those chicken breading fried onion rings I haven't had in quite some time.

The Xena opera "Bitter Suite" helped them get past some impossible to navigate plot developments and a rift between the main characters that would have been very difficult to resolve logically but worked perfectly by approaching them emotionally.

If Walter wants to tell Olivia's niece a story about how Peter went missing and they had to try to find him, it could be a space keeper or it could advance the story. but I'm sure it's going to be amazingly entertaining.

These days most actors have come from

    by themanwhocan

drama schools. The old school Kirk Douglas/Harrison Ford days are well and truely over. I could see most of the T.V actors capable of doing a song and dance, at least in a forced "i had to do it as exercises when i was in drama school" way.
The Buffy ep was ok, certainly not broadway , but it was a somewhat original concept for a show at the time so you had to give it a bit of credit dispite the weak piss poor singing and dancing.
But fuck FOX for forcing this shit on all its shows just for the sake of it. And fuck Glee. The all singing all dancing crap that it is.

    Whats it about anyway?
Greese was all about riding (sex that is)
The sound of music was about freedom of sprit (and had Nazi baddies)
    Whats the point of Glee
Ill tell you: Soulless cash-in on reality talent shows and pushing record sales, featuring fucking guest stars plugging there music, all dressed up like a drama with youth issues but really its an hour long advertisment for record companys. bullshit

Fringe is not afraid of giving you the sci fi straight up (something Lost didn't want to embrace for a bit) and demands its audience to just roll with it. Great show

I think Peter's abduction is only part of it. There is something on Earth-1 that they need on Earth-2. Remember, before the hiatus, there was a reference to something killing all the plant life and vegetation in Earth-2? They called it The Blight. So something bad is happening on that side and maybe this side has the solution? Or maybe they're trying to move everything from that side to replace our side?

    WTF Musical Episode?!

    by dickballsworth

    Dear Fringe;

Seriously? You're going to tempt the shitfates by doing a MUSICAL EPISODE? After the poetic and emotional slam dunk that was "White Tulip"? The gimmicky 80's episode was passable, but you'd better have some kind of ace up your sleeve in order to pull this one off.

    Love and kisses,
    Dick

I Can't Stop Laughing At These "V" Fans

    by crow3711

I mean, I almost never quit a show. The last one I watched alot and felt forced to quit was Heroes, like so many, so there is that. But V is just such a bad fucking show. It's incredibly how bad they managed to make one of the coolest concepts on tv. These V fans know Justified is on at the same time, and is about 100 times better than any given minute of V? I mean, honestly, I still haven't quit FlashForward, and it isn't anywhere near as bad as V is. The acting, the dialogue, character arcs, character motivation, EVERYTHING in that show is a fucking mess. FlashForward has the same problems, no doubt...but at least its fun to watch how silly that show is. And its actually gotten a lot better in the last few weeks. But these people advocating for V...give up. It's going to get rightfully canceled. its a bunch of empty pretty faces with absolutely nothing to say. It baffles me how they managed to water-down such an a stellar concept.

    V is pretty entertaining.

Intense pacing. I don't see how they can keep that up for long, reminds me of Heroes season 1.

That looked like Walter on the bridge.

    by i hope you die

I hope Walternate has turned into one evil, angry motherfucker after having his kid stolen. Noble playing a version of Walter who not only has all his faculties intact but is seriously fucking pissed off would be awesome. It would put Peter in an interesting position too. He's pissed at Walter for stealing him and lying to him but his real father, Walternate, has turned into an evil son of a bitch.

    Hold on a sec...

    by scors54

I've been watching 24, which just got kind of interesting in its final episodes. the plot has turned toward Russian government stuff, and they mentioned that "President Markov" was still president. If memory serves,I believe John Noble played him back in 24's horrible season 6. Now, if they have to somehow bring Markov back in the last few episodes of 24...

You do know that Glee is already on Fox (not ABC).....which makes it a little more clear why they may be doing a silly musical episode.

This show has been brilliant the last three weeks

    by itchy

Absolutely hitting it's stride. And in true Fringe / Fox fashion, they're going to take a big steaming liquid shit all over it next week by queering the whole thing up with a stand alone period piece musical episode. Brilli-fucking-ant.

No wonder this show can't break out as the next great thing like it deserves with these kind of fucking decisions.
