L.A. And O.C. Readers! We've Giving Away Tickets To The Newport Beach Film Festival's Screening Of SOLOMON KANE!

Published at: April 22, 2010, 1:42 p.m. CST by mrbeaks

Beaks here...

Michael J. Bassett's SOLOMON KANE is a fun and fairly bloody take on Robert E. Howard's serialized saga about the exploits of a damned 17th Century mercenary. For me, it felt like a throwback to the sword-and-sorcery flicks of the 1980s; I also appreciated that Bassett stuck with the relentlessly serious tone of Howard's books, rather than inject a some humor into the proceedings to make it more "accessible". Tonally, SOLOMON KANE feels directly related to John Milius's CONAN THE BARBARIAN. If you loved that classic, I think you owe it to yourself to check out Bassett's picture. So I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to give away some tickets to the Newport Beach Film Festival's two screenings of SOLOMON KANE this weekend! I have six (6) pairs of tickets for each showing. Here are your options:

Saturday, April 24th at 5:45pm Edwards Island Cinema (in Fashion Island) Sunday, April 25th at 8:30pm Regency South Coast Village Theater (across from South Coast Plaza)

If you can make either of these, fire off an email to mrbeaks@aintitcool.com with the subject header "SOLOMON KANE Newport", and be sure to include the following information: 1) Your full name. 2) Your guest's name. 3) Which screening you'd like to attend. The deadline for entries is Thursday, April 22nd at 3 PM PT. I'll post the list of winners that evening. For more on the Newport Film Festival, check out the official site. If there are still tickets available, I highly recommend SOLITARY MAN and I AM LOVE.

SOLOMON KANE is the real deal...

    by spud mcspud

...A genre movie made with love, passion and absolute dedication to the tone and pace of the stories. REH would have been proud. And James Purefoy fucking OWNS you all as Kane! Absolutely badass to the core.
This movie is, for any fan of sword-and-sorcery movies, unmissable. SEE THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN. You will not be disappointed.

After Conan and King Kull, Solomon Kane is the next best known character. And trust me - they stay very, very true to the character. I'll take one SOLOMON KANE over Michael Bay's entire ouevre, any day of the week. This movie is the real deal - you can practically taste the cold and the mud. Unrelentingly grim, and nothing less than stone-cold badassery all the way through. I cannot WAIT for the next movie!!

  • April 20, 2010, 1:04 p.m. CST

it's the real deal if you like mud

    by newc0253

it's got some promise but it ain't Conan.

  • April 20, 2010, 1:06 p.m. CST

Yeah, spud mcspud, I'd love to "SEE THIS ON THE BIG SCREEN"

    by rev_skarekroe

But I don't live in fucking LA and neither does 99% of the country. For us this is going to be straight-to-DVD whether we like it or not.

  • April 20, 2010, 1:15 p.m. CST

    rev_skarekroe, I feel your pain...

    by spud mcspud

...Same thing happened over here with OUTLANDER. And when I DID get to see it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. But...
SOLOMON KANE is WAAAAAAAY better than OUTLANDER. I hope someone picks it up for distribution - I'm amazed no-one has so far. And yet that piece of shit ELM ST clusterfuck will open fucking nationwide. There is no justice...

  • April 20, 2010, 1:19 p.m. CST

This is closer to its source than CONAN was...

    by spud mcspud

...Because Arnie's Conan was just a blunt instrument - if it was in his way, he'd kill it, break it, bust through it or destroy it some way - whereas REH's literary Conan was intelligent, spoke way more than Arnie's version, was civilised enough to eventually ascend the throne to Aquilonia, and was a leader of men. In short, a much more rounded and real person than Arnie's Conan - who was great to watch, but was more Milius' onscreen incarnation of the Ubermensch than a perfect portrayal of the Conan of the stories.
THIS, on the other hand, couldn't be closer to Kane. Yeah, there are occasional changes - but the attitude, the devotion to his faith, the renunciation of a life of badassery that becomes his vocation in the end, his relentless Puritanism - all that is intact. It's hard to see, from the point of view of a major Solomon Kane fan, how they could have got this portrayal any closer than the Kane of the stories.

    Very disappointing movie

    by FrodoFraggins

Great lead actor and character but a terrible story

  • April 20, 2010, 2:38 p.m. CST

Damn. I've been looking for this on DVD.

    by fatjesuschrysler

I thought Soloman Kane came out a long ass time ago, judging from a one MC D-Lyte's hilarious review. Hopefully it will find it's way to the SLC.

    Movie is CRAP

    by konkrete590

This movie is crap, some of the worst acting ever by everyone other than the lead. This was one of my most anticipated films at fantastic fest, and was just garbage. It's like Zena and Hercules where the villans look scary but sneak up behind you only to wait for you to turn around and kill them. Really, wouldn't evil sneak up behind you and then stab you in the freakin neck?

    Robogeek highly recommends SOLOMON KANE

    by robogeek.com

This is a solid, smart, satisfying film - one of my favorites from last year's Fantastic Fest. You guys in L.A. and O.C. are in for a real treat. It's a gritty genre film with real conviction, and one of the classiest takes on pulp source material one could ever hope for. I'm frankly mystified as to why this hasn't gotten a U.S. theatrical release yet. Check it out.

I would sign up if it's a guaranteed in.

Most likely this is the typical overbooking free pass deal where you'll end up in a long line for a few hours, with pass in hand, and end up not getting in at all because it "sold out". The last time I did something like this I had to force myself in the door just when they announced it was "sold out" and sat in the taped off Press section that took up 1/3rd of the theater, and which was 80% empty when the lights went down!
Sorry to sound like an old fart, but my time is valuable. Fuck 'em.

    Fucking Terrible

    by The Helper Monkey

This movie is like the worst shit you see on SyFy. Truly, truly below average, with only brief glimpses of mediocrity. Avoid it.

    SOLOMON KANE

    by Darth Scourge

The movie takes a few liberties with REH's source material, but the essence of Kane is intact and it's actually a pretty good film. Purefoy is great in the title role, the movie has a brooding, dark tone throughout, and the fight scenes are suitably visceral.

  • April 21, 2010, 6:12 a.m. CST

i just wish this would get a general theatrical release

    by mojoman69

But even bigger movies, like The ROad didnt get that. The studios wont bother wioth distribution unless its Disney, a Judd Aptow like comedy or an inane Rom com with J Lo or Jennifer Aniston. O woe to man!
