HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN feature starts shooting Monday... and Quint knows who the movie Hobo will be!!!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. If you're like me you've anxiously awaited word on the rumored HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN feature... it's okay if you don't know what I'm talking about. For those who didn't get caught up in the fake exploitation trailer craze surrounding GRINDHOUSE, there was a contest held which encouraged people to make their own Grindhouse trailers.
Jason Eisener's HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN was the winner and he deserved it. If you've delved into '70s exploitation at all you'll feel the trailer was a chip off the old, funky block. Here it is if you missed it:
Ever since he won the Grindhouse trailer competition there was talk of a feature version of HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN and now it's finally happening.
I originally got a tip-off from a spy named "Jehan Quadi" that HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN was filming in Halifax and that Eisener had cast a certain known actor as the Hobo. So I decided to test the waters and see if I could get a confirmation. That I did, from Eisener himself.
Not only does the movie begin shooting Monday, but we know for sure who has been cast as the Hobo. Unfortunately, the original Hobo, Dave Brunt, will not be returning in the role. However they found a hell of a great replacement. Filling the sole-flapping shoes and carrying the 12 gauge will be the man, the myth, the fuckin' legend... Mr. Rutger Hauer!

Like I said, perfect casting, right? I hope he incorporates the insane gravely voice that Brunt gave the character in the trailer in some way.
Don't feel too bad for Brunt, though. He'll also be making an appearance in the film as a cop... and if I had to guess, he'll probably be a crooked one that ends up at the business end of the Hobo's shotgun!
Ya' heard it here! What are your thoughts?

...I'm also very, very sick of exploitation-hommage-cinema. I wish this fad would finally die out soon.
-
...hope they can flesh it out to feature-length properly.
-
I demand it!!
-
The movies have been missing Rutger for too long.
-
I hope it'll actually be set in Halifax and that the RCMP will be well represented, that'll just add to the awesomeness cred of this movie. Ellen Page and Sidney Crosby should make cameos as well.
-
Rutger is da man. Be it in classic films like Bladerunner, or crappy genre efforts like Salute of the Jugger, he always delivers.
Blind Fury kicks ass!!!!!
-
and 90% of the rest of the normal population..you have no fucking clue what Quint is talking about
-
If they "hollywood" this up then it will be shit, but if they film it like a grindhouse movie it could be awesome
-
its a pity his career never took off in Hollywood.
-
"Patrol cars on fire off of Hollywood Boulevard...
"I've watched meth crystals glitter in the dark near an unconscious hooker
"All those moments will be lost in time, like a broken forty-dog down a drain...
"Time to die."
-
This is the kind of movie that might of not been on my radar. But with Rutger in it it's now the movie i'm looking forward to most this year.

He's the greatest Bond villain that never was. His turns in The Hitcher and Bladerunner alone make him a legend (he wrote the his replicant's end-speech - some of the most memorable lines in cinema).

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind & Sin City proved he still has it, so it's a real sin he hasn't been given far more of these quality parts.

I wish him the best for the shoot and hope the material does him justice.
-
Will the folks behind TPB have a hand in this? That would rock.
-
my teenage years at the drive in

-
Over the course of the week, news about not one but fucking TWO fake trailers getting made into feature films. I dread to think how many kinds of dreck these will be.
-
Do you think this will be in 3-D
-
OK, too awesome. Hauer RULES.
-
They should get the guys from Trailer Park Boys to at least make an appearance as well.
-
I love me some hobo with a shotgun. I am sad that Dave Brunt won't return for the title role. Rutger Hauer is a legend but he doesn't have the small, underdog body frame that made Brunt sympathetic. Also Brunt's not famous and looks like he stepped out of the 70's so it gave the grindhouse trailer some authenticity. Brunt pretty much makes the trailer what it is. He's perfect. Replacing him to increase the star power of Hobo with a Shotgun is a terrible mistake. I'd prefer the feature go direct-to-video if it meant getting Brunt back.
-
than see another diseased Hollywood remake. "We're going to hell and you're riding shotgun!" click clack BAM!

I here I thought Quint was down with the Ruts.
-
Hauer is too good an actor and a presence to be stuck in DTV hell. ROy Batty is still one of the most iconic characters in genre films. Ellen Page should be a victim, that would be a nice tip of the hat to Nova Scotia.
-
Amazing.
-
These grindhouse trailers (pretty much all great, funny and witty in the context of that movie) are being diminished by actually being made into features now. It helps that it's still RR behind it all so the sensibility is intact but I really feel this is another case of people thinking they want something they really don't. I'll still see it but this is nichey nichey stuff.
-
Maybe not the case but you get the point.
-
Which would be a nice homage to the AMicus films of the late 60's early 70's. Edgar Wright would be the guy to do it too.

And by my meticulous count HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN will be his 105th feature He's had 44 dramatic TV show appearances. 6 short films and 1 music video. Best performances: THE LEGEND OF THE HOLY DRINKER (IT-FR 1988), THE EDGE (HBO 1990), BLADE RUNNER (1982), ON A MOONLIT NIGHT (IT-FR 1989), THE HITCHER (1986), FLESH + BLOOD (US-NE-SP 1985), BLIND SIDE (1993 HBO), FATHERLAND (1994 HBO), SURVIVING THE GAME (1993), PARTNERS IN CRIME (1999), EUREKA (UK-US 1983), THE BEANS OF EGYPT, MAINE (1994).

I live in Halifax and the original Hobo Dave Brunt would hang out at the place i would get my comics, and have interacted with him there was no way he was going to be in a full length version of this movie due to the fact that he is a actual hobo. At the comic book store he would play video games they had set up on a tv, he alway smelled bad, and would always talk to himself or curse out loud no matter the age of children in the the place. You could tell that he has some sort of mental illness but that being said his acting in the trailer is a nice accomplishment for him.

He exclaimed, with great relish.

Or let's say they got a lot of acclaim in some other movie just because the movie made $200 million at the box office but they still suck -- I got no respect for 'em and I let 'em know it. They should realize that they’re the bosses of this industry, and not support any movie that doesn’t deserve to be supported. Now suppose today an impersonator opens up with the Keanu Reeves impersonation then he goes to the Leonardo DeCaprio and Sharon Stone and Kidman. He does all the people. It would be a very short show. Because they have no characteristics. Because they never went on the stage. Esther Williams was a great because she went in the water. And Lindbergh went in the sky. His life is basically over. No one believes him and he hooks up with another guy in the rest home there in East Texas, the actor Ossie Davis. He plays a guy who thinks he's Jack Kennedy. They have this odd relationship. It turns out this guy who thinks he's Jack Kennedy thinks that there's a mummy that's sneaking into the rest home at night and sucking the souls out of the old people, and it turns out that he's right. So Elvis and Jack Kennedy have to team up, kick the mummy's ass and save the rest home.” - Bruce Campbell

Why are you fucking retards excited about Halifax???
by manifestchaos
It's a goddamn shooting location. They filmed EXIT WOUNDS and THE INCREDIBLE HULK and KICK-ASS in downtown Toronto but I didn't see a bunch of cameos by famous Toronto personalities, I didn't see any Toronto landmarks featured (beyond the obviously recognizeable roadscapes in the superhero driving scene), etc., so STOP FUCKING TALKING ABOUT ELLEN PAGE CAMEOS AND LOCAL ARTISTS ON THE SOUNDTRACK, YOU'RE HONESTLY A BUNCH OF COMPLETE FUCKING MORONS.
-
now that would interesting, a movie thats all 70s retro and then suddenly some canadian rap song pops on...maybe even his version of oh, canada. lol
-
this movie is probably going to be fucking awful. Whoever it was who described this as a movie people THINK they want to see but don't ACTUALLY want to see hit the nail on the head.
-
That would be funny! But yeah out of place. And to manifestchaos you are idiot, nothing wrong with local fucking pride. But I wouldn't expect any less from an ignorant snobbish torontonian.
-
The filmmakers are from Halifax. And the film is set is Halifax. EXIT WOUNDS nor THE INCREDIBLE HULK were set in Toronto.
-
He should play a meth head or something.
-
That could work haha. Maybe he have a scene where he goes to a local pawn shop and sells his gold medal for more meth money. "I am the greatest"
-
clearly all set in the present day? That bugs the shit out of me. Death Proof and Planet Terror would have been better if made as though they were lost films from the 70s. The same goes for this movie and the digital video camera seen in the trailer. Pointless.
-
It's the worst of the fake trailers. Just another reason for Eli Roth to film a scene with a woman being cut up or tortured. Talk about a obvious closet case with some serious women issue's, Roth definitely puts that vibe out there.
-
They have a very firm hold on what he can and can't do in the public spotlight, he's their golden boy. I would love to see a scene with him selling his gold medal for drugs though, that would be too amazing.
-
Awesome, This is going to be fun as hell.

Vermont? Virginia? What am getting its in Halifax,Canada.
-
this is going to be awesome to seeeeee...

shit
-
i can't speak for anyone else but the reason i thought it was the best of the bunch was the acuracy. it completely felt and looked like an old trailer for a movie from the 70s or 80s. the image quality (and i don't mean the scratches) had that old videotape/film stock look to it. even the voiceover sounded like one of the voiceover guys from back then. then the actors and the fashion were good and even the fonts used for all the credit related things. if i had found that on youtube and nobody told me, i would totally believe its a real old movie. all the other trailers had giveaways that they were recent.
-
He always does. Everyone he does is worthwhile.
-
(sticking to my typo).
-
I'd much prefer to keep David Brunt as the hobo, but Rutger is a pretty decent choice. They should have Rutger do an intense reading of "I'm gonna sleep in your bloody carcasses TONIGHT" on youtube to help convince us.
-
Edgar Wright needs to get off his ass and make Don't.
-
They should make that. Blind Fury was an awesome movie. Rutger was the man. And it had Terry O'Quinn, classic movie.
-
Fuck yeah.
-
...Jason Eisnfer's short film. It has a better production value than the hobo trailer. Its pretty hilarious stuff. The ending might be a bit brutal for some people's tastes, as it doesnt really hold back on the violence. Its sort of a weird hybrid of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes and Evil Dead with some splatter film influence.
-
I always wanted to see a movie based on a fake trailer some douche made. Oh wait, no I haven't.
-
Which was all sorts of awesome. Cautiously optimistic?
-
....in that shot above!
Great fuckin' casting for this thing. He'll be awesome I'm sure.
Agree that he'd have made a truly brilliant Bond bad-guy at some point
-
I thought it was for BLUE ICE with Michael Caine not a fucking cartoon.
-
I also live in Halifax and heard the same information in Spindalx's previous post. I didn't want to say anything though, in case it was bullshit. But that would be a good reason Mr.Brunt isn't carrying the weight of the lead. I hope the movie does well for all involved.
-
Thanksgiving should be filmed also!

I really wish Dave Brunt had continued his role as the hobo. I wonder if it was his choice or if the only way the movie would be made was with a star as the lead? Still, Rutger Hauer IS a legend and perfect for the role. Good to see Brunt is in the movie, but it will no doubt distract me and make me wonder what could have been. Been waiting for this movie for a long time now! Good to hear it is finally happening!

Underated, and by far Hauer's best. Even better than Wanted Dead or Alive.

hell yeah!

Rugter Hauer perfect. Nothing like GRINDHOUSE.
-
If someone is going to be stupid and call something a "bomb" then their facts are wrong. Bombs do not turn a profit. Kick-Ass did, therefore it's not a bomb. Calling something that it's not just leads to more idiots in the world breeding more idiots. Fight ignorance with knowledge. Bomb it is not because it made it's budget back and then some.
-
Don't go around spreading information that is incorrect. That leads to genocide and so forth. Mediocre? Fine, whatever, that's a difference of opinion. Bombs don't make money. This is a true fact. Correct facts are good. Getting things right and not spending your life being wrong and stupid is also good.
-
We're ALL dirty cops! I'll see it JUST for that one PERFECT line!
-
Get some fucking taste. Screw this mess.
-
Rutger Hauer blowing people away is our taste. It has been since Nighthawks.
-
Was a fun movie. There was just no way it was ever gonna live up to the hype.
-
I'll buy that for a dollar!
-
Your math is fuzzy. When a $28M film makes $30M in theaters, that isn't profit. Why? Because they don't account for P&A (prints & advertising) in the budgets they post... with P&A, Kick-Ass probably cost closer to $50-60M. So far, it hasn't made it's money back. But it will.
-
You also aren't accounting for the cut the exhibitors get out of that B.O. take. The studio probably only gets half or less of that $30M.
-
I have a 35mm cop sitting on my desk. I yoinked it while workign as a projectionist when Grindhouse came out.

Interesting.

This just looks mostly funny...

"If you've delved into '70s exploitation at all you'll feel the trailer was a chip off the old, funky block". Well... I've "delved" into the subject, seeing as how I was a kid in the '70s, and spent all my spare time and money watching exploitation movies in first run, with very few escaping me. The only thing in this trailer even slightly resembling the '70s is the font style of the title. Seriously, so many people claim to love '70s exploitation yet seem to know nothing about it. This was pure crap that screamed "bad contemporary student video" in every frame. If you think this in any way captures the feel of '70s exploitation, I feel sorry for you.
-
Royston Lodge, there's already a film called 'Plan 10 From Outer Space'. It was released in 1995 and starred B-movie queen Karen Black as an alien named 'Nehor'. I first read about it in the 'Ed Wood'cover issue of Cinefantastique back in the day. The storyline of the film involves a mormon "phrophet" stumbling upon an insidious alien plot to take over the world. You can look it up on the IMDb. Curiously, the look of the film somewhat harkens back to the production design of Tobe Hooper's remake of 'Invaders From Mars', which also stars Karen Black (as well as her son Hunter Carson, whose father was L.M. Kit Carson -- the guy who scripted Hooper's 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre Part 2' as well as 'Paris, Texas' and 'Breathless'). L.M. Kit Carson happens to be Tarantino's favorite script wirter, for what its worth.
