It took me 24 years to see Captain EO properly.... SO WORTH IT!

Hey folks, Harry here and for those that follow me on Twitter - you know that Yoko and I were at Disneyland today - because... well... Since we've been together - we've been to Disneyland 5 times. Rocky & Adrian had the ice rink, we have Disneyland. It really is our happiest place. I have loved it forever - but anyway that is neither here nor there... What I'm here to talk about is CAPTAIN EO. I remember in the mid-eighties when the project was announced. It was Michael Jackson, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Angelica Huston, James Horner, Walter Murch, Rick Baker, ILM... ya know... all Gods at the time. I knew them all, not personally of course, but I read articles in all manners of magazines, saw behind the scenes on MTV - and it was all going to be shown only at Disneyland. OH MAN. By the time I finally got back to Disneyland, it was gone. I'd seen bad dupey copies on a videotape that a friend of mine had... Hell you can embed them from YouTube... but I always wanted to see it as intended. Yesterday, a very dear friend mentioned that I should check it out while it is still there. And all of a sudden, a pinata of my youth - I could see it to nail it with my stick of achievement - made from the accomplishments of youthful dreams. When I went today - and they announced it was in 70mm... my brain came. The audience cheering - beautiful, black Michael Jackson - at his best, before any... anything other than the hair fire had happened. I found myself at the Stage Door Cafe for corn dogs with upcoming director of FOOTLOOSE, Craig Brewer - and he said, "Man, I kinda got emotional during Captain EO." Never being afraid to share my emotions, I responded with, "Ah hell, I cried. Not out of sadness, but the sheer joy of seeing Michael Jackson's craziest most gigantically produced music video ever. Sure, I prefer THRILLER, I'm not crazy. But I've never seen THRILLER with a packed audience, I've never seen THRILLER with the best possible version of DBOX (Disney style) - with air cannons, lighting effects and just immersive things that made it so much fun. Sure - it is all kinds of goofy, but it is pure goofy - at a place that Goofy calls home! That we came out of EO, to find Yoko running to the Star Tours merch-building buying a Captain EO sweater... well, I married right. Craig told me the differences from the original presentation were simple. Originally, they had coordinated lasers that shot out from the screen or at the screen coordinated with the images onscreen. Sadly, that wasn't there. But as Brewer told me, the theater didn't move back then. And that was real damn cool. The presentation is a bit different - but 70mm 3D? That's what I'm talking about! You could see every bit of funk in funktacularvision! That and getting a behind the scenes tour at the HAUNTED MANSION - where I got to stay on the ride past the let off point, then make my way back through the Haunted Mansion in reverse... To Be in the Stretching Room... as it shrunk... WAS AMAZING! Seriously - other than the cast members - who has done that? Well, I'd recommend being mobility impaired... cuz wow. It was kinda crazy awesome. I'm a HAUNTED MANSION super freak. I have tons of cool stuff from it, I've picked up over the years - and is one of the cornerstones of Guillermo Del Toro and mine's friendship. But if you didn't know CAPTAIN EO was back at DISNEYLAND... go now. So much fun! Seriously!
