CW’s SMALLVILLE Hits Record Low!!

Published at:  Apr 17, 2010 8:00:25 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“Smallville” received an early renewal for a 10th season last month, but The CW may now be thinking renewal came too early.

Friday’s episode apparently marked another new season low for a series that had already dropped substantially from its prior season, when it ran on Thursdays.

Preliminary reports put Friday’s episode at a .7 in the 18-49 demo, low even by The CW’s super-low standards. "'Melrose Place' territory," as the Hollywood Reporter's James Hibberd puts it.

The episode attracted just 1.9 million viewers, possibly an all-time low and certainly a big step down from the 4.8 million viewers it averaged over its first eight seasons.

It's in a horrible time slot

    by liljuniorbrown

I'm not defending the show completely, last week's episode sucked ass( not THE Banshee, but a Banshee at a bed and breakfast mystery?) but you have to take in to consideration people like me who DVR or TIVO the show while they enjoy a Friday evening out. I like Supernatural about ten times more than I've ever liked any show but I ain't staying home on a friday or saturday night to watch it. People that catch shows online after the original airdate have to account for a massive amount of the market. Even if thats not how they base the ratings it should count for something. On a story level though, the writers need to pick it up. We ain't going to have a Superman at the movie anytime in the next two years so turning the "blur" into a real honest to God flying Superman wouldn't kill you. Might be a good pay off to some of us that's been enduring this show for ten years.

Genre shows do not succeed on Friday nights.

    by nick michalak

As much as it sounds like a scapegoat, the Friday Night Death Slot is real. Every genre show that is thrown up on there suffers in the ratings. Networks know this, and obviously, they do not care. I can only hope for a schedule rearrangement so Smallville can get a more reasonable day and time. They could also cut better promos, too.

The one night of the week, other than Saturday, that people go to the movies, get laid, attempt to get laid, hang out with friends, play video games, surf the net, etc, and they are shocked that ratings are done over 70%? Whatever, they did this **** to themselves, but it's not like Wednesday and Tuesday don't have openings in their schedules.

    by shutupfanboy

The two on one against Metallo was cool. I do think they need to introduce more DC characters since that seems to boost the ratings most of the time. I wonder if the ratings have more to do with pre-emptions do to baseball, Philly didn't have the show til 11:30pm last week.

Y'know, people get fired for doing redundant tasks

    by tall_boy66

If you're paid to do a job, then you turn around and do the exact same job when the job has already been competed, you should get fired. Like if someone made a burger for a person, they paid for it, then ate it, and then the person behind the counter made another burger for the same customer, yet the customer has left and NOT A SINGLE PERSON ON THE PLANET will eat that burger, then the person behind the counter is terrible at their job and will be fired. That's what Herc is with this post. The person behind the counter. Making burgers. Wearing a funny paper hat.

I guess you were trying to seem more professional this season by posting the ratings of shows every night-that can be seen at fifty other sights... Then you consistently single out a show on the CW...that's laughable.
At least you will never be mistaken as anyone we should ever take seriously. God forbid someday some asks you to do something that matters on this site. Thanks for mostly posting ratings lately, that way we don't have to listen to the opinion of someone who acts like an eight year old...

    Herc Has A Boss

    by waspo

I'm quite sure everything has to run by Harry first, and to get heavy traffic to his site post an article about a genre show is going to garner more traffic than saying that Supernatural and Lost are solid shows. I mean it's journalism 101, and I don't blame Herc for post this stuff. I think if it was up to him he would take more about Justified or Chuck or a cool show like Pawn Stars, but he doesn't because he has a boss to answer too like most of us. Harry has the final say, and that's that.

    Smallville is a recycling project

    by powerring

They keep recycling themes and issues and plots. "Lois and Clark" doesn't have 1/10th the interest that Clark and Lana did. Everyone except Clark flies. It's floundering pretty bad. Soon, we'll have a dozen flying Kryptonians and still, Clark won't fly. I want to like it more than I do...but every week is like the show is in stasis.

    by david cloverfield

The non-figths, and the terrible dramatic stare offs are killing this cool concept show. You know, they don't put in the horrible drama becouse they think it's good storytellnig. They do it, becouse the CW will only afford scenes like "Tess and Zod meet in Clark's barn for no reason, and talk about their feelings." or "Clark watches the sunset , contemplating his emotions. Seriously, the use and reuse of the three or four sets they've built is shameless on this show. The Kent farm's barn being the funniest of them (characters who never been there, organize secret meetings in THE BARN to discuss Clark.) The stupid is getting awesome on this show though. Every line of dialogue from Chloe's mouth is pure Batman and Robin level camp, full of puns. "It's time to turn up the HEAT on our COLD BLOODED icy killer..."

The WB and CW obviously no longer care that much about ratings (though that .7 probably gave their execs some pause today), which could likely prove a great thing for TV in the long run. If anything, I wish they stopped caring 10 years ago.

I hate to say that too. I have stuck with this show for its entirety, never missed an episode. At this point I only watch because I have stuck with it so long. If I have to sit through one more scene that involves 2 enemies coyly having a threatening conversation while smiling at each other (every scene with Tess), I may throw my shoe at the screen. I will probably be shopping for a new TV next week.

If you could be troubled to read the numbers above you would see Supernatural does way better than Smallville. In fact its their second highest rated scripted show behind Vampire Diaries. The CW as a whole appears to be tanking. Look at their ratings decline. Even a hit like Vampire Diaries isn't pulling massive numbers it would have a couple years ago. And I have to agree. We get that you hate Smallville Herc, but the horse is well and dead now, let it be.

    by rsanta74

I wonder how the ratings stack up once you tack on the Saturday ratings in that pre-empted NY market. I guarantee you that Smallville viewers are loyal enough to have tuned in, in spite of earlier preemption. I'm not saying that it will or won't add a huge amount of viewers, but this is not a small broadcast zone.

    by waspo

The CW is a business and they care about the bottom line. If they can sell ad revenue for those shows like Gossip Girl and 90210 and even Smallville and Supernatural, plus make the money up on the back end with DVD and Blu Ray sells than they don't care. It'll keep the doors open and that's what you have to do.

    by tall_boy66

He just admitted it by randomly posting how Angel and Veronica Mars ratings, so he transfers that rage towards their cancellation on unsuspecting targets. Like Smallville and any other shows on the network. Basically, the point of this newstory is that Herc gets angry about something he can't control (Angel and VM and whatever getting shitcanned) and then beats the crap out of a conveniently nearby target (Smallville). The moral of the story? Herc beats his wife to make himself feel better. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

    by dursman2000

Can't believe how many people here don't get it. Smallville airs on FRIDAY NIGHTS on the freakin CW network. FRIDAYS. Move your beloved Supernatural to FRIDAYS and its ratings would, I guarantee you, be even lower than Smallville. The CW doesnt even have the reach or publicity the WB does -- so these comparisons you keep making with the WB ratings of 10 YEARS AGO or what Supernatural is doing on a different night altogether are just completely invalid. But hey, whatever you want to keep doing to piss on this show, good for you!

the Giants game ruined my DVR recording...

    by lynxpro

The Giants game went over 17 minutes into Smallville's schedule. But to The CW's credit - or at least the local station - they started it at the beginning but that meant I missed the ending in the DVR recording. I can't wait for the DirecTV TiVo HD to come out so I can stop saying "DVR'ing" it and actually say I "TiVoed" it again. As for Supernatural, it kicks ass. Dollhouse sucked and deserved cancellation.

Samllville took a wrong turn at season 4..

    by ceejaynightwing

..and it never corrected itself ever since! The first 3 seasons were great, with Clark learning how to use his maturing powers and a different power to focus on every season. Then came the flying problem in season 4, Kal El can fly but Clark never can? Add to that the inclusion of Lois Lane prematurely and you had this show squarely off its rails. We've had 5 seasons of the writers doing a wayward elseworlds that has no chance of finding a way back to what the initial audiences thought was going to be the ultimate pay off. i.e Clark becoming Superman in the tights etc etc. He's worked with Lois too long now, they're both in Metropolis and he doesn't wear the glasses let alone the colours anymore so how exactly can he ever use Superman as an Alter Ego unless he's wearing a mask? For them to fix this show it will take one hell of a contrived Time-Travel/Alternate Universe? Crisis-on-infinite-Earths type story to re-present the current show with a Clark Kent who wears glasses as his familiar guise with the other characters, return Lex Luthor to his rightful position and eradicate the cheesy Green Lantern league from the equation.

    Dollhouse = Brilliance!

    by ceejaynightwing

It's not a shame it ended or was cancelled, it got plenty of time to tell some very good stories and wrap up the entire plot perfectly using a unique bookend narrative to both seasons. The potential of this show was never completely presented since there were too many times where sex and violence was the primary use of the Dollhouse. It would have better been presented as a HBO production with an allowance for graphic violence, nudity and action scenes. The episode where they had to dismembered the body of the guy Sierra killed after he raped and abused her on a regular basis is a prime example. That was Donnie Brasco' meets 'I spit on your Grave' stuff but handled with kid gloves becasue of the network its was on. Narratively, JW managed to realize the potential of the Dollhouse although many of the audience never stuck around long enough to see how broad this got. An excellent scifi show that deserves a place in the home video collection as well as an R-rated version.

    Hercules is wasting everybody's time

    by anamika

Everyone knows CW doesn't really care what Smallville pulls in, because it makes millions per episode from DVD, syndication and abroad. Its DVR is pretty huge too, will bring its audience for this ep to around 3 million. Hercules also chose to ignore the fact the series has moved to Saturdays in some markets.

Hercules needs to grow up, it's shit like this "report" that devalues AICN and its rep. Why the fuck is Hercules picking on Smallville? What a pussy play.

    There was no new Smallville

    by photothatdodo

There was no new Smallville, here in NYC (umm, America's biggest media market) on Friday. There was a baseball game on. Hopefully, CW execs would take that into consideration? If not, then the numbers are really worthless because, as they sometimes say in business, apples aren't being compared to apples.

Can't believe they'd let Smallville be pre-empted in their biggest media market, then complain that no one watched it. Too weird.

Someone in this talkback said that it was actually shown on Saturday night here in NYC instead. If so, it was with no publicity saying that.

    Even Though...

    by karuma

...these numbers mean almost absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things and are a mere manifestation of a someone's desire to have power over the decision making process of someone else, there is a bit of gold lurking beneath the surface.

The reason the numbers are down is because the show has gotten so far off the beaten track that it is practically impossible to discriminate it from it's original premise, which was to show the process by which Clark becomes a man and a "super" man.

This incarnation is filled with slight references to established Superman canon while it attempts to rewrite the history and bring in myriad amounts of phenomena that were only hinted at or never occurred.

In other words, It is not Clark Kent. It is not Superman. It is something else entirely and it is not being well received, nor is it very well written.

The whole Lana arc went three years too long, the Lois arc has been too slow to develop, and the Chloe arc, even though I like Chloe, should never have happened.

Though the producers promise of "no flights, no tights" was given in good faith, it should have been abandoned after four years, once Clark reached high school graduation, because everything since then has been a complete mess.

If they want to save the show and make it something spectacular they should, they won't, but they should reboot the whole thing in the fall for one last year of greatness.

    I love smallville...

    by satansteve

...but even I can admit that when it's bad, it's god awful. After seven seasons of Lana going "I love you, but I can't be with you. You saved my life like, 200 times, but you lied to me, so I can't be with you etc" over and over again I was glad to finally see her FUCK OFF FOREVER and get down to Lois, who is actually the best live-action incarnation there's been, to my mind. And yes, I'm even counting Margot Kidder, because she was fucking hideous. Smallville at it's best is fan-service of the highest order, and when it's so good other people who have no real respect for the source material tune in, only good things can happen. I just wish that the quality level would stay pretty consistent. That said, I will stay with it to the end, any naysayers can stick with their Supernatural, which pretty much lost me when they introduced the circle of salt as a defense mechanism. Cue me in the office sprinkling salt around myself to make fun of the Supernatural nerds and going "Whoa! Hey, stay back! I've got a circle of salt! It is IMPENETRABLE! Ha ha!".

Give him the ability to fly, if you only have 1 more season, then start tying it up, move it closer to the real superman. Smallville has gotten dumb. Power Rangers dumb.

    by themikejonas

And I feel guilty about insulting the Power Rangers in that way. Take this last episode. Fortress of Solitude, Metallo's making the two Kryptonians weak. They freezebreath him and he's all encased in ice--then they feel all better, standing a couple of feet away from him, until he breaks out of the ice. That's ICE, not lead. Idiot writers can't even get kryptonite right. There was a ray of hope earlier in the episode when Metallo and Clark first spot each other, then WHOOMP--Zod, revealing his powers to Clark for the first time, blows up the trailer Metallo's standing in into smithereens. I'm like, "way to throw us a curve! Start out making us think it's a Metallo episode, only to vaporize him 20 minutes in and make it Clark vs. Zod." But, no, after the commercial break, there's Metallo, no worse for wear, having miraculously made his way underground so he can have a heart-to-heart with Tess. I don't mind the show continuing, but God, can the writers grow some brains?

    by jt kirk

Damn, 0.7 is low enough for them to simply go to each viewer's house and perform it as a play. You know what part of the problem might be? MARKETING!!! Who the fuck is over at the CW thinking that their 1 genre show needs no marketing? We've got characters shooting fireballs from their eyes and flying and blowing ice crystals and using kryptonite knives and fucking around with Metallo, and their marketing department is still feeling around their assholes trying to find where they broke off their thumbs. THERE ARE NO OTHER SUPERHERO SHOWS ON TV RIGHT NOW EXCEPT THIS ONE AND NOBODY KNOWS IT!!! Good or bad, Smallville is something TV don't otherwise got right now, but if nobody knows what it is and that it's on, they're certainly going to keep not watching.

As far as the episode itself...

    by gislef_crow

"Upgrade" was kinda eh, and confusing in a few spots. Lois finds Metallo, he needs fuel, so she drives him off and... next we see, he's at a hidden kryptonite cache (in Metropolis?), in a trailer. Lois is nowhere in sight. Clark arrives, Zod fires beams from above, Metallo is apparently killed. A few minutes later, Lois drives up. Where was she? Why'd she abandoned Metallo temporarily? How'd he escape the explosion?
Then they're going to South Dakota? Why? To meet some scientist that her general father knows? And why take a bus, when they drive back and forth by Lois' car from Smallville to Metropolis ten times a week?
And why does Tess have a secret lab in the sewers of Metropolis? Why does it have a huge-ass elevator shaft going even further down, for Lois to fall down? How does she survive a bone-breaking fall, even if Metallo captures her?
Zod and Clark were good together, but Metallo as a nice guy seemed kinda weird, and the plot was a bit of a muddle. Yeah, it doesn't explain low ratings or high (it's the people that tune in next week that reflect how good this episode was or wasn't). But still...

But why is he doing it in the Fortress? They establish earlier the Fortress Jor-El construct doesn't like him. Surely it can do more than just refuse to talk to him, as has been demonstrated in previous episodes.
But F/X budget withstanding, Smallville has always been good at the "cool moments," even at the show's nadir. It's the plot holding them together that's often been lacking.

kinda sucks that this week was the lowest rated

    by redbull_werewolf

the past episode was actually pretty good and delt with some superman mythos stuff and characters. I can see one of the throwaway episodes getting shit ratings (like the one a few weeks ago where they went to that love cabin and a painting killed people) but i shows like fridays are what make smallville greati hope CW doesn't reneg on the renewal, this show is great once again and a season 10 should let us see the blue and red suit as well as more characters from the DCU

    The Ratings

    by jazzylg

Mean something as far as ad dollars. But seeing that the show has been interupted for 2 weeks in a row by baseball, the ratings naturally took a hit. It's a great show, with megaloads of downloads from i-tunes and amazon, dvd sales,dvr/tivo recordings, the show's built in fanbase keeps it going. So Herc,.7 or 700,000 viewers doesn't mean that much when you look at the big picture. Besides, The CW is a joint venture between cbs and Time/Warner. A DC character will survive by default.

    Moving toward DC continuity

    by dannygloversadick

It may be too little, too late, but this show is finally getting better and moving towards incorporating the DCU - if Warner Brothers would make up its fucking mind. If they use Checkmate and Maxwell Lord to bring in a runin with Apokalips and Darkseid as rumored, now we're getting somewhere.

On the last talk back, i defended herc showing the ratings every week. If its important to network executives, then we should care. But this post has so many things wrong with it, it isn't helpful in the least and it isn't what the networks are seeing. The suits will see that Smallville was preempted in three major markets, and countless minor markets, all important information that herc left out in his original post. I'm not saying you should write a book with each post, but at the very least keep it honest. As for the Angel vs. Smallville ratings: Smallville on the CW, a company that is a shadow of the success of the WB, with neither the quality of programing or the money. Comparing Angel's ratings to Smallville's is completely pointless. They are not on the same network, they did not have the same time slot, they aired in different television landscapes.(ie pre and post writer's strike. network television ratings are down something like 20% since the strike.) When even bring up the ratings of other, older, shows if your not even going to quantify them or even put the rating in any sort of context? I get it, Angel was awesome, it got canceled early and the suit that did it was fired. What else is there to see?

    I PVR'd it..

    by colloquiallyborn

So I could skip most of the show.. Just get a basic knowledge of what was going on.. I think I watched 15min max.. t'was horrible.. Man.. they need actual writters on this show pronto because it's not "Smallville" anymore, it's just getting worse.

Why didn't they just stay in Smallville, let the damn characters grow without Lois, and the rest of the characters? Show us Clark actually evolving in a small town trying to get his act togheter and train to become the Superman we all know!?!
ThHey could've involved every DC Hero in the book by having them pop up in the media all over the world. Pa and Ma Kent looking on at Clark, making him understand that he needs to be ready when he shows himself.
Lots of people have mentionned in other Superman post that one of the best stories of Supe's becoming the Hero was done a few years ago. I read it.. I still think John Byrne's "Man of Steel" was far better, making Supe's less powerfull than he had became over the years, more "human" and actually was troubled when he finally had to show himself to the world by saving the Luthor Planewith Lois in it. The one image of him sitting in his old room on the farm said it all.
He wasn't that much of a Superhero, than he was a man. I thought that should've been the drive for the Smallville series.
Where he wasmore of a kid growing up, trying to cope with the world, and try to prevent everyone from discovering his secret.
They end Season #9 or 10 with the last two episodes with that part of the story. Where the world finaly see him then he goes back to the farm, gets his costume, and then flies into Metropolis... We pan out, we hear the media going nuts, "We just learned that the mystery man who actually was able to lift the plane back to safety just flew in to Metropolis! Who is this guy!" -- Start the Superman theme, Symbol come flying into us.. And fade out!..
I was hoping better from this series, I would've not even have included Lex other than the name of the rich Mo'fo' who owns plants ect across the state.
I would've really have concentrated on the Clark and Lana characters. Throw away all these Meteor freaks, get some actionby having a couple of other meta-humans in there once in a while to test out and show off Clarks powers, but not go all out like they did. Make Clark and Lana become what the Comics have told us for so long. Without her becoming a freaking ninja!.. I think Seasons 3 and 4 where the start of the end for them. Would like to see them stop the series, and come back with a more Smallville approach to it, like they did when the ratings were actually up..

    by parissun

Zod should not have been made a regular character. That's stupid. The show is at it's best when it's about Lois and Clark. It's also good when it deals with the Justice League. Just dump the Zod adn Candorean storyline and deal with Justice League vs. Checkmate.

    Too much Sturm und Drang....

    by anakinsdiapers

...and cloak and dagger. That's always been the problem with Smallville, and the last couple of seasons have only amplified the problem.
The atmosphere, and overall template of a smallville episode seems to be made with a different aesthetic in mind than what Superman represents. It's better suited to Batman, or any number of dark heroes, than the "sun hero" Superman is supposed to be. Smallville is supposed to be Clarks journey towards his transformation into the hero we know as Superman, but really, given all the morose attitudes, storylines, motivations and choices being made throughout the years, how can anyone envision Clark turning into the guiding light he'e suppossed to become. Jeeze louise, he's running around dressed as Neo!
plus, people are just plain tired of waiting for Clark to fly and become Superman. When you have Zod gaining powers and taking flight immediately, whatever pyschological mumbo jumbo you come up with as to why Clark isn't flying just comes off as lame.

Clark not flying at this point

    by powerring

is the single worst, lamest cop out and annoying plot device in the series. The show improved overall when the original guys left, but for whatever reason they still cling to the artificial limits of "no flights". ORIGINALLY the idea was to avoid the campy stigma of Lois & Clark for a new audience. Then it became a liable point for superboy rights. Now WTF is the reason?

It's a sign of quality decrease

    by tobywolf13

Smallville has never been a great show or classic television but it used to be decent and often compelling. I believe that there are five things that have contributed to its downfall:

    5) DC Comics quest stars. It used to be a cool thing once a season. Now it is every week and takes away from character development of the main characters. It's gimmicky and boring and who cares about Wonder Twins anyway?
    ***

    4) Offscreen action - Smallville has a history of having the big action offscreen, like Lex's big cloning plot in season six. This season it's even worse. Offscreen, Chloe reassembles the Justice League, Lois has publications and great assignments, and Zod does all his evil plots. Onscreen is boring romance plots instead of the action.
    ***

    3) Contrived love pairings - Some of them like Tess/Zod make no sense at all since he's threatened to kill her. Some, like Chloe/Oliver take place basically offscreen. Martha/Perry now? Oh please.
    ***

    2) Fatigue from Doomsday (8.22) - That episode where Clark is NOT killed by Doomsday and Jimmy Olsen was killed and revealed to be HENRY Olsen, real Jimmy's older brother was insulting and boring. After that, I think about 40% of the fanbase left and never came back.
    ****

    1) Clark Kent - he's either not onscreen cause the show became about Oliver and Lois and, when he is, he's dressed like Neo from The Matrix, setting buildings on fire, beating up women, and being a thug. He's unlikable to the max and Welling's increasingly more wooden performance does not help matters.

I think that fans can blame the move all the want or that Fridays are bad or that it's spring. Yes spring and Fridays are part of it. But a 67.5% drop from 4.8 million in past seasosn to about a 1.56 for the last episode "Upgrade" is not all because of the network moving it. The producers screwed the pooch here. They treated fans like idiots with Doomsday and then they brought out a terrible "suit" and continue to stretch out nonsensical plots that are boring to watch. Add in renewal which tells us all the last eps are nothing but filler and stall, and the mass exodus was complete.

You just do not go from being number one to just above Melrose Place for no reason.

    It's not just Fridays

    by vera

That this show is on Fridays seems to be a handy excuse these days, along with a lack of advertising. From what I've read online, people simply don't like what Clark and what he has become this season. He's abandoned Chloe, Ollie and the JLA and regressed so badly, how can you watch and support someone like this? That's my problem with him and many others too. Everything that made the show successful a Super-Clark we can empathise with, and want to succeed, along with his relationship with Chloe, and later on Ollie and the JLA was abandoned in S9. Why would people stick around to see a show that basically says they wasted 8 years watching canon that got thrown out in s9?
