Thoroughly stoked for the SPARTACUS finale this weekend. I'm not sure that I've ever seen a show go from luke-warm to full-steam as successfully as S:BandS. Let's hope the lead actor makes a full recovery so we can get on with another season of more nude, bloody, and scheming awesomeness!
April 16, 2010, 4:47 p.m. CST
May very well be the best finale Ive ever seen, the finest hour of TV this season, and on par with some of the best cinema Ive ever seen. Everyone I know who watches has all said the same thing, the entire episode they were laughing, screaming, cheering, and gasping at every turn. What started as subpar has in its first season become my favorite show ever. And yes, that means over Lost too. I love me my Lost but Lost has never gotten a reaction out of me like this show. If you arent watching your are MISSING OUT.

Epic finale. It was a great balance: On the one hand, it leaves you fufilled. On the other hand, you want more. Like many others, I thought the pilot sucked and was trying too hard to be 300. But then it got better. ALOT better. One of my favorite series to grace the screen to be honest.
April 16, 2010, 5 p.m. CST
I didn't start watching the show until a couple days ago via netflix because I didn't think it was going to be any good, but holy shit is it awesome! Great writing, acting, visuals, everything! Totally surprised me, but it has quickly become one of my favorite shows. Probably one of the strongest first seasons I have ever seen.

How about an "On-line Episode of the Week" column featuring SPARTACUS?<P>I'm sure folks would love a Talkback devoted to the show since we missed out on it for Season 1. We might even find a lot of new viewers getting turned onto it as well. (Although, we'd have to be wary of spoilers for the n00bs...)

glad to see so many Spartacus fans. the first episode got so many bad reviews i didnt bother to check it out until recently. the first ep was actually a little meh, but the show just got better and better every episode. now i have to say it in my top 3 favorite shows. im glad Andy is alright. season 2 cant come soon enough. and thanks for not spoiling the season finale guys. real classy of ya
April 16, 2010, 5:14 p.m. CST
I wont spoil anything because it still hasnt officially aired yet, but goddamned, there were just so many good moments on last nights episode I just cant wait to get home so I can watch again. The first 30 minutes was pretty much setting it all up, but once it got going, holy hell. That first moment of blood (you know what I mean) got me jumping out of my seat and yelling "FUCK YEAAAAAH!!!" From that point on it was a messy mixture of cheering, crying, laughing, shock, etc etc etc etc etc. And I agree, totally satisfying BUT I WANT MORE NOW.
April 16, 2010, 5:27 p.m. CST
Haven't seen the Spartacus finale yet, so I'll have to avoid reading and commenting for now. But I'm really looking forward to checking it out in a couple hours. And thanks, Herc.

Wow, I guess I wasn't the only one.I thought it sucked too then caught up with it last week, watched evey episode on fancast in the course of 2 days. This show rocks! Glad to hear Mr Whitfield is doing ok. Guess the next thing we'll see from them will be the 6 part prequel mini series to tide us over till they're ready to make more?
April 16, 2010, 5:38 p.m. CST
Just finished watching the season finale on Netflix. That fucking last scene just gave me chills. What a great episode to a great series. For those who don't know history, just wait until you see the army this guy builds.

Nothing stops this show from moving forward. Think someones to big to die, think again. Think somethings to great to happen, think again. Think the plot would get changed too much, think again.

April 16, 2010, 7:41 p.m. CST
I must say that the first 4 hours of S:B&S were pretty weak, but fun enough to watch as a guilty pleasure. Now, the show is just so awesome that it is just amazing it turned around so much. IT IS NO LONGER JUST A GUILTY PLEASURE! John Hannah really helped make the sure work --- and I am very glad that the producers went back to him after wanting a big, intimidating actor for the role....

"it's no rome" now it's the shit and they all know it. SPARRRRRTACUSS
April 16, 2010, 8:15 p.m. CST
Total blood bath, literally. What's really surprised me however is looking up the historical accounts of the real Spartacus and the 3rd Servile War. History is fairly vague, but S:B&S has actually stayed fairly close to what history exists. By no means a documentary, but not bad at all considering all the plotting & scheming they've built into the show.

from Dollhouse are on staff for season 2. This pleases me because showrunner Steve DeKnight is Buffy Alum himself. He also said, "There is a difference between 'Camp' & 'Pulp'" & I want to say "Fuck yes, there is!"
April 16, 2010, 8:37 p.m. CST
If sites like this one actually got behind it, maybe it'd make a difference. But it seems to be flying under their radar, and the only promotion it gets is via the talkbacks. <p> Like Supernatural, that can mean you reach a few (grateful) people, but it doesn't really indicate massive success. Know what I mean?

April 16, 2010, 9:15 p.m. CST
While I ironically fuck you with my femmisist dick.
April 16, 2010, 9:23 p.m. CST
but I'm not really sure sites like this make much of a difference anymore. I don't really remember True Blood showing up here at all in the first season, kinda seemed like Herc jumped on the bandwagon for season 2. But maybe that's just my memory, I've slept since then, lol. I'm hoping the ease of Netflix streaming will help it out with distribution. I think shows like Supernatural are doomed often by just being on CW or other channels. I know I can't even pickup our CW affiliate here over the air and it's out half the time on cable. So with CW not offering streaming, it's often hard to find a legal way to watch even if you want to.
April 16, 2010, 9:46 p.m. CST
for your specific tastes. But on Herc's first podcast with TORN, he says that he only took the job that Harry offered him if he could talk about the the topics he was enthusiastic about. And really, why would you not want that, personally? [Herc has actually bent his own rules by setting up ratings TB's that will let you talk about whatever the heck you want.]

I am so glad to have a talkback to show some love to this show (even if its not its own talkback) and the finale rules!! There are alot of out of work actors after the finale, *** spoilers*** anyone else think lucretia lives? she still seemed to have some life in her, and if lucy is married to one of the producers i doubt she is going anywhere.
April 16, 2010, 10:10 p.m. CST
.....the first half was midly annoying with the back and forth between the yesterday and the present, but now in retrospect I have to admit that it was a good spot of set-up. <p> But holy crap, once the action started, it was mother-frakkin on. Blood galore. <p> Spolier***** <p> <p> I didn't expect Batty to die in this episode or in this Season. I kind of expected that they were saving him as a side villain for Season 2. Oh well. It was coming anyway. I did see Ashur escaping. That Assyrian is one slimy snake. <P> And I saw Oenamaus coming amile away for as long as they avoided referring to him by his real name as opposed to by just his title (that should clue you into who he is). I'm guessing Season 2 villains are Glaber and his wife Ilythia - boy, you just know she's going to get what's coming to her. I will surely miss Xena Lawless, next Season and Batty. <p> ********End Spoiler <p> <p> <p> Hot dog!, I CANNOT wait to re-watch this episode, again. And again......and again..and again and again and again. <p> This weekend. <p> And then I'll go back and re-watch the entire Season again - including the crappy first couple of episodes. <p> <p> Looking. <p> Forward. <p> To. <p> Season. 2!!
April 16, 2010, 10:22 p.m. CST
The only reason Herc set-up the ratings columns last year was so that he could take gratuitous pot-shots at Jay Leno, and his 10pm show's ratings. <p> No other reason. <p> Once Jay was back to 11.35pm and once his ratings were back to pre-Conan levels beating Letterman eveyr single night, you never heard him mention the Jay Leno show again. It's pathetic, but par for the course for Herc. <p> I suspect the only reason he still keeps it now, is that he already has the system set-up to receive the date, so why no publish it, plus he get the added bonus of more opportunities to hawk more wares for his benefactors on Amazaon or some other outlet with the free (well, not really) advertising and the free clicks when Talkbacks log-in to talk about the shows. <p> Of course it doesn't help when he does the typical Herc thing and has to make everything about Whedon/Buffyverse/Firefly/Serenity and reference every single tangential connection to that sordid world when he gets the opportunity , and which ultimately puts off every non-Buffy/Whedon fans - and you Browncoats wonder why you're so reviled in the geekdom. Is it any surprise that Herc supposedly has no interest in Stargate Universe - which has no Whedon alumni, but which is the superior show, and yet was all balls excited for Caprica which just happened to had a guest-starring James Marsters from Angel and with Jane Espenson from Buffy lore executive producing? <p> So much so that Merrick, who doesn't even review TV shows, has to come to Coaxial to review SGU episodes, while Herc treats it like it doesn't exist. It's a good thing anyway, because I would rather not have him review SGU - seeing as he's the worst writer on AICN and would bloat it with Whedon/Buffy references wherever he could.

I agree with other posters, this show which seemed like a guilty pleasure picked up mid season into a character driven show.<p>An unexpected and surprisingly good new show.<p>UNLIKE 24, WHICH FOOLISHLY KILLED OFF FRECKLES, Spartacus's "Freckles" (Mira) didn't get killed off.<p>Alas, Batiatus shall never utter the word "COCK" again.
April 16, 2010, 11:03 p.m. CST
I've never seen a season finale in which just about half the actors in the opening credits get killed off. Amazing episode, sorry to see John Hanna go, his batiatus, while a bastard, was a likable bastard. "Join us, and we shall make Rome tremble!!" got goosebumps right there.
April 16, 2010, 11:05 p.m. CST
Dude I don't care that they or they cousins and their sister's husband's brother's niece's boyfriend's landlord once worked on Buffy, or Angel or Firefly. If it's a great show, and not written in the mold of those shows, then , I'll still watch it. The point was that we don't need to be reminded of that EVERY SINGLE REVIEW and EVERY SINGLE OPPORTUNITY that you Browncoats get. Look at the shit that Herc does all the time. You don't think that turns people off? <p> Don't you understand that that's the reason that you guys are hated so much. Because you make yourselves so insufferable and unbearable with having to remind everyone, all the time, at every single opportunity just how great your shows were. So what? Who cares? <p> Espenson was a huge part of the latter Seasons of Battlestar Galactica - a show that I loved. That did't make me love it any less. And that might have something to do with the fact that we didn't need to always have to be reminded that she was once Whedon's right-hand woman or whatnot. And probably also the fact that Herc also wasn't that big a fan of that show, otherwise he would have driven a great deal of people aways from it, as well, by driving that fact into the ground ad infinitum. <p> But what YOU're doing right now, basically baiting me to not watch the show next year because there'll be more Buffy/Whedon connections, is the exact reason why I hate browncoats and anything to do with Whedon so much. You're all just so obliviously obnoxious. Get. Over. Yourselves. Geez!! <p> I knew that Steven DeKnight was a former big part of Whedonverse going into Spartacus and that didn't change my enjoyment of it. But if having to watch Season two means having to hear more insufferable Buffy/Whedon nonsense ad nauseam, then you know what - fuck it and fuck you guys. <p> I believe this is also the same dynamic that led to the Box office implosion and bomb of Serenity - having to constantly hear how it was going to be the new Star-Wars and how Titanic's record was going to fall (surprise surprise that now we're hearing from Whedon fans how Avengers is going to smash Avatar's Box Office record - seriously????), but please, you go ahead and do keep it up.
April 16, 2010, 11:19 p.m. CST
Is the fact that Herc or anybody on this talkback bringing up the fact that DeKnight worked on ME productions in the past really have to bother you? Just chill out, who cares, Spartacus is arguably the funnest hour of television right now, can't we just agree on that. Jupiter's cock, man...

...MEANS DEDICATED SPARTACUS TALKBACK!<p>Right on. While Andy battles cancer, Starz is debating doing a 'prequel' series of six episodes for next January, or something. I've been trolling around the 'net and, apparently, SPARTACUS is not only doing gangbuster ratings for a cable show (more that doubled it's viewership between the first and last episode), it's also apparently getting critical raves. Oh, how I remember that first TB where a few of us were cautiously optimistic fans and so many were dismissive and self-important... yeah. Suck it.<p>Kai_Mah'gra - while I appreciate your need to perform your mental illness for us, please just enjoy the show and not, like, let your clear and present creepy obsession with "YOU BROWNCOATS" rule your life. Seriously, it's spooky and retarded.

Wow, while I'll be sad to see some characters go, I'm looking forward to where the story will go into Season 2. ***SPOILER AHEAD*** The scene with Crixus and Lucretia was especially brutal. When he told her he would rather see his child dead, then live to suckle on her breast before stabbing her in the stomach, wow that was a pretty brutal scene.

I pretty much had the same jump-out--of-my seat reaction like David19 while watching the final moments of the finale. However I too will miss that lil fucker Batiatus. What a great perfomance from the actor that's mostly known from those mummy films. And Nemmy, I doubt Lawless will be coming back from the looks of that stab wound however, I'm glad that fucking brat(forgot his name) got his just desserts in the end.<p>My question regarding a second season would be..what's next? What started as a 300 rip off is now a great series of it's own and no doubt it's a popular topic among us guys within the office enviornment.<p>ARRWWOOOOOOO!!!

Now that they're no longer confined to the ludus, I just hope that budgetary concerns don't start creeping up on this show. It got so good so quickly that I'd hate it to become a one season wonder.
April 17, 2010, 7:01 a.m. CST
to kill off a bad guy. The worst thing they could have done would have been to let batiatus live after the finale.<br><br> So many shows let their villains live too long just because the fans like the characters, see Benjamin Linus and Scorpius to name two examples. Those shows would prefer to live the show in limbo rather than move the rest of the characters forward.
April 17, 2010, 7:23 a.m. CST
I've had since... gosh, I think Lost season 5's ender. It's been a while anyway. <p> Cheered out loud at the shield tap, the jump, when Crixus stabbed Lucretia, and when Ilythia said "Seal the fucking doors". <p> Absolutely amazing episode.
April 17, 2010, 8:10 a.m. CST
I didnt mind ROME, but felt it was often boring and full of intrigue but little action. Spartacus gives up tons of action and of the bloodist sort. the sex scenes are actually hot. The gladiators look like fighting machines, not body builders with a sword. THe folks making the Conan movie should take serious note. THIS is the kind of thing most Howard fans would be looking for. Bravo to Starz for making some excellent entertainment on Friday nites.
April 17, 2010, 9:53 a.m. CST
If Rome was to begin its run now you all would be reminded just how awesome that show was. Spartacus is real close though, real close. Lets see what happens outside the ludus, hopefully it doesn't lose its way. Man that Ilythia is some piece of ass. I love the girl that plays her, she is perfect for that role. The prequel is said to be an almost definite so there should be some more Batiatus for all you lovers of his out there. Hannah played that role like a fiddle.
April 17, 2010, 11:20 a.m. CST
Unlike others here, I found the first episode to be fine. I watched the show expecting the worst...since I was never a Xena fan and absolutely LOATHED that HERCULES show, I did noty expect much from SPARTACUS. But the sheer audacity and over-the-top blood-letting of the pilot served to let me know that this was a show that had potential. It also showed that the worst thing that could happen, would happen. Nor was I bother by what some have comparedf to 300, as the kills in SPARTACUS were far more extreme than anything in 300. Plus, seeing John Hannah as a cast member was another clue that good things were ahead. The first ep did what any good pilot should do...introduce the characters, set up the plotline, and the tone of what was to follow. I was immediately hooked. The fact that series went on to EXCEED all expectations was a joy to follow. And for those of you who are streaming...you're really missing out. The show really rocks in High Def and 5.1 sound!
April 17, 2010, 11:26 a.m. CST
...back when the show first premiered and people were slamming it, I remember posting that SPARTACUS is what the written Robert Howard CONAN stories were like (without the monsters, of course). The upcoming CONAN film has a lot to live up to after SPARTACUS...and somehow, I think it will pale by comparison. Probably be more like CASH OF THE TITANS, I'd bet. Hope I'm wrong.

They still need some sets to build. I imagine the show's going to focus more on Rome, which means showing things like where the Senators meet. I can also see the houses being more opulent than what Batiatus had, simply because the people living in them would be higher up in society (Claber, etc.). But you're right that the greenscreen will help immensely.
April 17, 2010, 11:43 a.m. CST
I think they'll follow the history fairly closely. Which means they'll be in the countryside (and can use the green screen) for much of it. <p> No more gladiator style fights in the arena, but there'll probably be training footage, and actual battles with the troops sent out to kill them.
April 17, 2010, 12:39 p.m. CST
Spartacus is great. The finale was extremely well done. On a related note, Raimi & Tapert have another very entertaining series on the air worth mention - Legend of the Seeker. Not as bloody, but the action is on par (and actually at times better, since there is no overused CGI blood), and it's got a great ongoing mythology.
April 17, 2010, 12:45 p.m. CST
actually ended strongly. figured they'd do the gladiator thing for a second season and then go revolt for season 3/4. <p> nope. <p> the way the season ended leaves you wondering how many seasons starz is planning, can see only 2-3 with the current pace. <p> and it could be a couple years until season 2 with the cancer treatment issue halting production.
April 17, 2010, 1 p.m. CST

after the Spiderman 3 debacle. First Drag Me to Hell, now Seeker and Spartacus. I hope he gets back to his roots. He could certainly reboot Darkman. Im glad he is off the Spiderman movies. The big studio thing isnt good for a creative soul. Just ask Spielberg....
April 17, 2010, 2:15 p.m. CST
Whether you like the show depends on your tolerance for fantasy. It's basically your standard "chosen one" storyline, with a legendary warrior being called to action to save besieged lands. However, the storylines are fresh usually, and it's much darker than you'd expect. Think of if you took Xena or Hercules, removed most of the cheesiness, added a tightly plotted ongoing narrative, plus greatly upped production value and fight choreography. I like it a lot. Plus Craig Parker (Claudius Glaber in Spartacus) is one of the main villains in Seeker as well.
April 17, 2010, 2:39 p.m. CST
HOLY FUCKING SHIT.<p>For all the many reasons I love this show, it is second-to-none for it's daring. And not the blood and sex - the consequence. It's such a relief to watch a show where things fucking happen and have meaning.<p>DeKnight tweeted: "The time has come to Kill Them All. Gratitude for watching this season! Stay tuned for news and updates on season 2, SPARTACUS:VENGEANCE!"<p>Can't wait.

I thought I read that the show was cancelled or was a deal worked out for another season.<p>I only watched the pilot episode and the show didn't really appeal to me. Bridget Regan is hot though. Raimi should have her appear on Spartacus.

For a few episodes, primarily because it co-starred Bruce Spence (ROAD WARRIOR). It was ok, but not very compelling for me, Yes, Ms. Regan is attractive...but these gals that pop up just don't seem of the time period. More like beach babes.

I enjoyed season 1 but season 2 not as much. Plus after Spartacus came out my tolerance for non-bloody sword action was waned. Plus the acting is not that great. Bridget Regan is hot though and would probably be my choice for Wonder Woman if that ever happens.

work for me. LOL. otherwise we wouldnt have a lot of the scream queens. Regan is hot. Id like to see her as a Roman hottie getting plowed by Doctore! I hope Raimi puts his energy in the Ghost House productions. It would seem like a good time to bring back Evil Dead.

with Spartacus. Hes a producer but credit for this show goes to Steve DeKnight. Hes the creator and show runner. Raimi has as much to do with Spartacus as JJ Abrams has to do with Lost.

david19,you're abosolutely right...he's also written some episodes, including the sensational finale. FiOS has all the rpisodes OnDeman in HD.It might be fun to rewatch the show from the beginning and mnaybe pick up some elements that may have been planted in the earlier episodes that one wouyld have missed the first time around. Now bring on that prequel!

Andy Whitfield had cancer. I hope he's doing better. I love the show too.

.....last I read, his treatment is going well (knock on wood). So well in fact that Starz are pressing on with the production of the prequel mini-series which I believe is set to air early next year (that would have them shooting it late Summer early Fall this year) with Season 2 debuting shortly after that. <p> <p> Spartacus doesn't play or have a larger role (historically speaking, anyway) in the story pre-Ludus and pre gladiator days (if you don't count his numerous flashbacks of his time with his wife Sura), so that means that they probably may not need to have Andy Whitfield in the prequels as much or at all, and that he can proceed with his treatment and recovery in readiness for Season 2 filming. <p> I thinkthe prequels are going to be mostly about how Batiatus and Lucretia, went from being small time bit-players to big-time Ludus owners (Lunistas) and perhaps Oenomeaus (Doctore - played by Peter Mensah) since he also seems to have an intriguing back-story. he did, after all, fight against Theoceles, the Shadow of death - the bad-ass giant wraith looking dud that Spartacus and Crixus fought and whose death made Spartacus champion of Capua.

.....that would be Wraith-looking 'dude'.

I can see now what you hairy palmed bunch of f**kers are talking about, Herc is OBSESSED with Smallville, and not in a good way. Rather, a man in a raincoat hanging around outside an elementary school kind of way. Stop the stalking Herc, you big filthy perv!

Really, So they are trying to get it cancelled now? Guess the CW is the new Fox. Who the hell watches television live anymore anyway? Why are they still tracking people who haven't discovered the internet yet? Oh I know why, CW doesn't put their shows on the web in any decent way, thats why. Good Job way to be relevant in modern times.

Watching (or recording) TV live means that many of us can watch the show in HD with 5.1 sounbd, instead of some small computer screen. I'd NEVER watch anything on some tiny iphone screen. And would only watch a movie on a computer screen if I was on a plane.

The title says it all "Kill them all." Batiatus getting his in the end was great. Spartacus telling him if he wants to touch his wife again he has to go through him, awesome. Can not wait for next season. Hope Andy Whitfield gets well soon. Bloody great show.

Lots of blood and some resolutions to story arcs that were set up earlier in the season. Cant wait for Season Two. I want Glaba and Ilythia to get thiers as well.
April 18, 2010, 7:20 p.m. CST
First off they move the show to the dead zone and then take stupid 2 month break. That chart for the past two weeks of Smallville shows that people don't know that the show has returned. Networks need to stop taking those stupid breaks in between the season.
April 18, 2010, 9:54 p.m. CST
I couldn't even get through a full episode. This show is garbage. Admit that all you like is big bouncing naked tits or jerking it to dudity. Season 2? More like Season booooooooooooo.

Which is a bit of a shame, as there's nothing else remotely like it on TV right now. It's a fairly basic sword/sorcery type show, with bloodless fightscenes, but some very intricate choreography in them. And not the silly wire-fu type fighting that plagued Buffy/Angel towards their end. <br /><br />Both female leads are hot as hell, and wear revealing impractical clothing, so you know they're not aiming at realism. But it appeals to the d&d kid within me. Swords, magic, boobs. Plots that won't vex a ten year old.

I'm a big LOST fan, but this show fucking delivers. <Br> What Lost for the mystery and watch Spartacus for everything else. <br> Andy is doing well and is promising him and a second season of this awesome show. <br> <br> Oh and I to stood up and cheered like a hockey fan when he killed ...you know who...
June 5, 2010, 7:34 a.m. CST
And I saw all of the episodes in a few days. Crap. What a great show. I was hooked since the first episode. I didn't mind the cgi blood but did noticed they toned that down in the later episodes.
