A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET clip - very interesting

Hey folks, Harry here with the first clip out there on the new NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. This clip kinda goes to show you how they're playing with the dream world / real world - and I have to say, I do like this clip quite a bit. It makes me curious, which is good because on Wednesday, April 25th - we'll be doing a real fun screening of the film here in town (more on that next week)... Here's the clip:

I really did just have a notion about what Michael Bay, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller have essentially done by doing the particular series of remakes that they have done. Think about Forrest J Ackerman’s generation. In their childhood they saw the birth of the great Universal Monsters… In their earliest years they saw the Lon Chaney silents… but really – their hearts belonged to Karloff’s Frankenstein, Lugosi’s Dracula, Karloff’s Mummy, Lon Chaney’s Wolfman… They even saw the genre turn to self-parody once Abbott & Costello gave them a go. But after a bit of time, they found the whole genre kinda goofy & hooky. Forry turned to nostalgia – remember the great monsters of old. Around that time, some strange British folks called HAMMER start remaking all those classic originals. Those titles that just felt like they had become ridiculous. And they rebooted them with a very starkly different visual texture and scheme – that was pretty consistent across their remakes. Hopping up the sex value – yet not entirely realistic. They lacked the pure atmosphere of the originals, but there was something distinctly powerful about them. That period was followed up by my generation of watching Romero’s brilliant NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, Tobe Hooper’s TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, John Carpenter’s HALLOWEEN, Cunningham’s FRIDAY THE 13th, Romero’s mind-numbing DAWN OF THE DEAD and the last great one, top of them all in pure quotable awesome… Wes Craven’s NIGHTMARE. We then saw pretty much all the series end up in lampooned reinventions, out and out satire. In particular all those SCARY MOVIE joke shit flicks. Now - we've had some pretty damn wonderful original horror in the days of the internet - but I've never really considered the PLATINUM DUNES label as being a movement - but really, in a way - they're what passes for HAMMER these days. Sure, they didn't go and do the public domain monsters and scares - but then, they were aiming at a new generation that didn't necessarily know the originals - but by doing that, they've introduced a huge amount of people to the classic 70's & 80's Horror characters. Which to our generation - it is THE SCARY HORROR of choice. They went out and licensed the properties, which were not all in one place... gathered them up and started making a very gloss version of the characters and stories. There have been mixed results, but they have been, overall, very successful. It certainly hasn't been the end of the world. At the very least they made my old Boy Scout camp the stomping grounds for Jason, which is highly appreciated. Generally - there's been a generational divide on these remakes... I know I've enjoyed them quite a bit more than Quint. Though HITCHER still bugs hell out of me. But I enjoyed their TEXAS CHAINSAW films, the AMITYVILLE HORROR and FRIDAY THE 13th. Yes, I prefer the original CHAINSAW and AMITYVILLE... but next they're gonna be doing a Part 2 to FRIDAY THE 13TH... and they're developing THE BIRDS and THE MONSTER SQUAD. Along with some original material, which I've been curious about them doing. Curious about their OUIJA movie project - and if PARANORMAL ACTIVITY totally cockblocked it. Whether you love them or hate them, they've essentially started a 2nd Age for the Modern Age of Horror that was the horror most of us grew up on. For some, that's the reason to get angry, but I'm actually really encouraged by what I'm seeing. That said - it'll be beyond bizarre to see anyone else in the Freddy role. Right?
