Joss Whedon To Assemble THE AVENGERS!

Beaks here...

Deadline New York's Mike Fleming is reporting that Joss Whedon is in final negotiations to direct THE AVENGERS. Huge tip of the hat to IESB for being the first to name Whedon as a finalist for the project. In many ways, Whedon is the ideal choice for this dream superhero project: starting with BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (hell, even going back to writing in a reference to Gigantor in SPEED), he's been integral in the mainstreaming of geek culture; he's also been extremely active in the comic book world, launching ASTONISHING X-MEN and taking over for Brian K. Vaughan on RUNAWAYS. As a feature filmmaker, however, the jury is out: SERENITY may have been shot anamorphic, but it still played like TV on the big screen; as for the multitude of BUFFY, ANGEL and DOLLHOUSE episodes he's directed, I've yet to see him deliver something that has impressive physical scale. And this is crucial because THE AVENGERS needs to be the biggest movie ever from Marvel Studios. It's the film they've been building towards since Nick Fury's post-credits cameo in IRON MAN. If they fall short, the Marvel Studios brand could be irrevocably diminished. Another challenge for Whedon: managing egos, and not allowing THE AVENGERS to turn into IRON MAN 3 just because Robert Downey Jr. is the biggest star in the cast. This needs to be a true ensemble effort. If anyone leads the way, it should be Captain America. Though I don't know much about the script (Nick Fury allegedly plays a significant role in the narrative), I wouldn't be surprised if pressure is brought to bear on Zak Penn to beef up a role or two before the film goes before cameras in early 2011. Love Downey, love Tony Stark, but, as Harry said a couple of weeks ago, I'd rather this be the superhero version of THE PROFESSIONALS - with a slight emphasis on Cap. Or Henry Pym.

from imdb: "Joss Whedon on state of sci-fi"

    by frg10

“When a show works, it works. When they don’t, they don’t,” he said Monday night at a Glee premiere party. “It has nothing to do with whether they are genre or not and sometimes it doesn’t even matter if they are good. Many good TV shows have been canceled way too early. It goes in waves and we have to figure out how to ride them and sometimes you wipe out. We are surfers not prognosticators. Certainly some blame can be placed on studios and networks who don’t nurture shows or give them time to catch on.” Well, you mean, like YOUR SHOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ... BIATCH!!!

    Avengers is NOT happening!

    by happybunni

If Whedon is the director then it's not going to happen. The studio will second guess and delay, and there will be arguments, and eventually our hopes and dreams will be crushed because the movie just will not happen. So, yeah, I really really really hope Whedon dosen't get the gig. Because there's a better chance of the movie succeeding with anyone else. Also what happened to the Spider-Man talkback? That was nice, alot of hate for the "remake", and now Sony/Fox/Whoever won't be able to see it, how will they know to stop the madness?

Presumably he'll try to shoe-horn in the Firefly folk as well - Baldwin, Torres & Tudyk certainly moved around Angel & Dollhouse after Firefly got canned, and Fillion did Buffy (not literaly lol) I had to get that off my chest. Directing wise, I don't think he can do it. Serenity was lame & he's not given us any indication of being able to pull something this big off. Favreau should have it.

    by robogeek.com

While I’m sad Fox didn’t snatch him up for X-MEN: FIRST CLASS (or better yet, a KITTY PRYDE spin-off with Ellen Page), Whedon’s a great fit. He excels with ensembles, knows comics like pancakes know syrup, has a very Marvel-esque sensibility/voice, and has proven to be a damn good director on top of a brilliant writer. Very few directors get an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes for their first feature out of the gate. Yes, SERENITY didn’t exactly set the world on fire at the box office, but that had more to do with the title, which to mainstream audiences probably evoked adult diapers more than it did the tragically short-lived series it was based on, which had an entirely different name and was also seen by too few people. This, on the other hand, will be huge. Way to go, Marvel.

Seriously, guys, read his run on Astonishing X Men. If you don't want to give Buffy a chance, give Angel a chance--read a recap and start in season 5 and tell me the guy can't write a team superhero narrative with spectacle. Watch just the series finale of Buffy and tell me he can't direct (I think he directed it, but I'd need to doublecheck) affecting action. If people automatically naysay everything that might well turn out cool, the universe will crumble into reality television and Clash of the Titans.

I've always seen Whedon as more of a writer than a director, and with a pre-written script, I don't see how this is such great news. I thought a lot of the fight scenes on Buffy have been pretty solid (although I'm in the midst of finishing up season 4 of Buffy and season 1 of Angel as I type this), but this level of filmmaking? I don't know. If nothing else he has a respect for the material, so at the very least he should bring that to the forefront. Whether or not he's capable of creating the spectacle that needs to be created remains to be seen.

Whedon is a great choice...the only two other people I would want to direct this would be Favreau or Abrams. Whedon's Astonishing X-Men was AMAZING. He actually made me like Cyclops and Shadow Cat. He handles ensemble casts extremely well. Every character gets his share of attention and depth. Haters who say Sam Raimi or Spielberg would have been better need to pass the weed they're smoking. SPIELBERG WILL NEVER DO A MARVEL COMIC BOOK MOVIE EVER. Raimi is going back to his horror roots. He's finished with this comic book stuff. SO you need to appreciate the list of directors who were ACTUALLY able to direct this. And I think Whedon is the best of the bunch. Don't give me Cameron or Ridley or Brad Bird. These guys(Short of Bird) don't care much for comic books. They care about their vision ONLY. And for the idiot who said McG and Michael Bay....are you fucking serious? Really? Theres more heart & better SHOT action in Serenity than both of those two hacks entire filmography put together.

    by IndustryKiller!

The narratives were murky and the villains he came up with terribly executed (although Cerebro was good from a conceptual standpoint, the execution....not so much). And more unforgiveably, he made the characters a conduit for his Diablo Cody-esque clever jokes, which made me want to punch him int he face. I just do not need to see these characters delivering whedonisms left and right.

PROS<p> - He already has a handle on writing superhero stuff, having done an amazing job on Astonishing X-Men. Granted, he'll be directing, but we all know how much a director can greatly influence a final script.<p> - He's proven that he can effortlessly juggle multiple characters. Look at Buffy. On any given ep, he'd have to manage 8-12 protagonists. Avengers should be a cakewalk, relatively.<p> - He can direct characters alone as well as VFX related action sequences. Can he do it on a major movie of this scope? No idea. He's at least enough fan cred to be given the benefit of the doubt.<p> - This movie, because it's a team based actioner, needs a director who can keep an eye on the characters. They need somebody who can keep some focus on the people behind the masks, lest this descend into a big screen Superfriends.<p> - The man CAN handly stuff these weighty, epic fights with multiple characters & locales. <p> CONS<p> - The cache of the Whedon name isn't as great in 2010 as it was in 2004. Had he been coming hot off of Buffy this might have meant more.<p> - If Whedon is going to have some input into the shooting script, he's going to have to reel in the snark. I love Whedon, but his dialog can be a bit too intentionally "hip" - in a Diablo Cody sense. Again, this movie is going to have its own screenwriter. However, Whedon will have a certain vision, as do all directors. As long as he can give us the Whedon who did "The Body" then I'll be fine with him touching things up here & there.<p> <p> <p> In the end, I think that Whedon is the right guy for Avengers. He's got to add his own touch to and handle characters who've already been handled by the likes of Louis Leterrier, Kenneth Branagh, John Favreau, & Joe Johnston. This is essentially a big scale version of what he had to do as show runner for Buffy & Angel. As the shows went on, more directors & writers put their own spins on characters. So, whenever a Whedon helmed ep came around, he'd be the guy putting other people's past work on the characters in focus for the ahead of him.<p> <p> I know that a lot of people are going to call him a one trick pony. I can't blame you. Firefly & Dollhouse didn't live up the majesty of Buffy. I get that. At the same time, I have to wonder if this is all Whedon's fault. Really. FOX kinda DID screw him & his shows over. That they even let Dollhouse finish its second short, but comparatively amazing season is nothing short of a miracle. However, as we all know, FOX likes to screw over their sci-fi shows. They did that to both of Whedon's in a major way, cutting him off at the knees multiple times. <p> <p> Whedon has to take a hit for his own diminished rep, but so does FOX. They did more damage to him than he did to himself. Had his later shows been on something like CW or cable, they would have both matured to Buffy/Angel fame. Instead, they were stuck on FOX and with FOX execs. Whedon should've compensated for the idiocy that is network TV, but he didn't and his rep has paid.<p> <p> I think that, if you can see his damaged rep for what it what it is, a large by-product of FOX's meddling, then you can see that he's not too different now than he was 6 years ago. As such, he's probably better for this job than somebody like a Michael "blowemup" Bay or a James "danceswithsmurfs" Cameron. The Buffy God Whedon isn't gone. He's just covered in FOX filth.

It looked shot for TV, and not very expensive TV at that. If he's good with comic book scripts, let him write the movie, but what I've seen from him as a feature film director has not impressed me. This does not sound promising. Avengers will benefit most from a seasoned director who can deliver a cinematic feast. If Whedon indeed gets the deal, he will need to step up his game exponentially from his previous efforts to satisfy my expectations of this movie.

What the smart people in Hollywood know is what makes great action movies like Empire, Raiders, Die Hard, Speed, RoboCop, The Terminator, Lethal Weapon, Spider Man 2, Iron Man, The Dark Knight etc etc etc isn't really the fucking action. The dullest part of Iron Man was the two robots beating on each other over and over. <p>What makes an action movie work is great characters. Han Solo, Hans Gruber, Marion Ravenwood. <p>This is why Marvel went after Favreau after "Zathura" and why it's going after Whedon after "Serenity." Their earlier work demonstrates they how to put funny, compelling CHARACTERS onscreen. <p> If you want to see Tony Stark and Steve Rogers and Bruce Banner come together for another punch-fest, phone up Bay or Ratner or that Clash of the Titans guy, I say. <p>Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.

Great Show Runner, Great Characters, Bad Combo

    by jgsugden

I love Whedon, and I love the Avengers. However, I don't think they play to each other's strengths. Whedon is a master of manipulating pain. His best work is when he drives a stake through your heart. However, the Avengers are a product of hope. They are born out of idealism, community and the greater good. Whedon capitalizes and builds disfunction. The Avengers tale is one of overcoming disfunction to form community. I'd love Whedon running a movie for a title with pain at the core (X-men, Spiderman, Batman), but I think having him run the Fantastic Four, Avengers, Superman or Justice League would be a mistake. Now - PLEASE prove me wrong.

    Serenity's problems

    by cookepuss

were the TV cast, not enough character development, the shitty VFX, & not enough Glau kick-assery.<p> <p> The TV cast made what could've been an epic sort of sci-fi flick fill very small.<p> <p> Certain characters from the show didn't need to be brought back. Period. The whore, the priest, & the mechanic held the movie back. They should've whittled down the movie to to maybe 4 or 5 characters.<p> <p> The VFX sucked. Simple as that. I, and every other CG artist I know, could've done better. The comp work looked weak. The matte stuff was sad. The practicals were dull. They needed a bigger budget so that they could've had a bigger studio do the VFX.<p> <p> Ask yourself, "What was the best part of Serenity?" Apart from the credits, if you said "Summer Glau kicking ass" then you'd have been right. Why, then, was she restricted to two fight scenes, one being partially off-screen? If Serenity had been 2 hours of the type of action in her scenes, combined with some of the space ship stuff.... the movie would've been aces. Instead.... Meh. Not bad. Just not memorable. More like a 2 hour episode of the show.

Yeah, I know, the film eneds some humor, and there will be no matter who writes it, but Whedon has proven his brand of humor doesn't work for classic characters whose best portrayals have always been more earnest, because that degree of seriousness is what serves them, as characters, best. Inarguably. And they certainly don't need Whedon writing jokes for Iron Man that Downey could do FAR better with off the top of his head. I don't really think you get these characters Herc, and you're clearly beyond biased on the subject of Whedon.

say this goes through and is made and released, everyone bitching about him being picked will go see it anyway. whether its because they're liars or just curious, they'll go see it. so it doesnt really matter who makes what...it'll make money and then they'll make more of the same, whether thats good or bad. so instead of popping a vessel out of anger, or even one out of happiness....chill out and relax, its just a movie.

Fans of Astonishing X-Men tend to love Whedon in general

    by IndustryKiller!

and his brand of kitschy post-modern fluff. I honestly don't hate the guy, what he does he does well, but that's all that he does. And what he does just does not seem to fit these characters, as he proved on Astonishing X-Men. If you liked it, it had NOTHING to do with being a great X-Men comic and everything to do with liking Whedons aesthetic. But the people suggesting Bay should be banned. Ill take ten Joss Whedons over Bay any day, at least Whedon has some talent and sense of vision, even if you don't like him, I don't think the word hack applies.

    Meh.......

    by rjmcready725

I would rather see Whedon do another Serenity film than this. Maybe it's because I am a much bigger DC fan than Marvel, but I am really not that excited for this, regardless of who is directing. Give me the Justice League movie!!!

THERE IS NO WAY NOLAN WOULD DIRECT THIS EVER! Why are so many of you thinking directors like Spielberg and Chris Nolan would even be an option. WB is having a hard tim getting Nolan to do fucking Batman. You think he'd do Avengers. Wake up people. Realistically Whedon is a top 3 choice. Everyone else is like that rock on Pandora. Unobtainable!

When they announce Whedon as director I will have a flacid one. Leave it to Herc to defend the character work in Serenity. Liked the show but I actually didn't care who lived or died in the movie. When you can take the goodwill generated from a show and evaporate it. You've fucked up.

I idolize Whedon but this scares me

    by sweeneydave

He has said himself that TV is the medium that he feels he can fly in because he's better at telling stories over great lengths. I don't know if I trust him with filmmaking. When he shows up with another TV show (or musical) I'll watch it faithfully (despite the borefest of Dollhouse) but The Avengers is too big of a ball for him to drop.

  • April 13, 2010, 5:06 p.m. CST

    Oh well. That's fucked then.

    by Hint_of_Smegma

    "Inarguably"

    by Kremzeek

HAHA. I love this site. Opinion is always up for debate. I agree, Whedon has yet to prove himself in a true bigscreen effort, but any time he directs an episode from one of his series (excepting Dollhouse because I didn't watch that show) I can tell immediately. I don't need credits to tell me. There's a higher calibre of acting, character interaction, and plot when he's at the helm. I truly don't get all the hate. = Like Beaks said, Whedon's been a huge advocate for us geeks. I don't see how the Avengers is automatically doomed now. Maybe wait and see? Nah, this is AICN - will never happen. = Lovey-dubby-rubby, Dstrange

I agree that Spielberg's work as of late has been marginal..(Though I love Minority Report). However, its not what he thinks. He still thinks he's a visionary. Ego. Cameron, Bay, Spielberg, Lucas, even Nolan now have been swallowed and blinded by their own ego. They think they're better than the material. Cameron wrote a spider man treatment back in the day when he was hungry. Now? He sees it as beneath him.

    by RealDoubleJ

You may love or hate Whedon but you got to admit he loves his characters, his history & his worlds he gets to play in. He also respects properties. As long as the premise of drawing up the avengers is plausable (they'll probably go with The Ultimates alien Invasion) & the actors competent & confident, it should be a thrill ride.

  • April 13, 2010, 5:16 p.m. CST

Odds are really stacked against this

    by A for Aristocrat

First off Whedon cant write men and these Avengers are pretty high on the testosterone scale. Second, Whedon has as big or an even bigger ego then all the stars currently attatched. When Robert Downey or Samuel Jackson dont bend, scrape, or worship him like his usual group of sycophants then there could be trouble. Not to mention the studio will not give him the control he had over his other work so that could be a problem. And since there is at least one female (Black Widow) then we will have to go through the usual all the guys get there asses kicked until the tiny girl uses her kung fu to save the day. The sheer popularity of the characters should make this successful in spite of Whedon but this is a major mismatch.

In a perfect world you'd be right. But there are too many things to go into making movies now. For one...Marvel is stingy...lest I remind you how they almost lost Favreau on Iron Man 2 and DID loose him on Avengers. They don't have as much cash as you think and if they do they're not willing to spend it. Secondly, those other directors seem to want to do their own stuff. Spielberg is doing TinTin but thats a labor of love. These moguls don't like to be hamstrung by source material. Some just ignore it all together...ahem BAY...just to do their own thing. And finally, you have to consider that these guys are completely occupied in their own projects. Spielberg TinTin, Nolan Inception, Bay Eating Small Babies. These guys are busy.

It's got two great "One chick hand to hand versus twenty guys" fights, a fantastic space battle, and two perfectly coherent, character-driven fisticuffs sequences. If that movie looked low budget, it's because IT WAS LOW BUDGET. Given a massive budget, plenty of time, loads of experience, I think Joss Whedon will absolutely make something memorable.

    by mradriano

That would have been the perfect pair way back when. His very witty dialogue paired with his lovable camp. That's what Spiderman 1 should have been. Avengers is a hard tone to reach, even as a comic book. With all those characters, with all different feelings they bring to the table. It's a mess in general. I won't blame Joss if it doesn't work out. Hell, that's as much of a daunting task for any director.

You people are idiots who are asking for McG and Bay. Whats wrong with you guys?! It shouldnt be about pure action and explosions. Have youseen Transformers and the T-Salvation?! Whedon will be able to handle the ensemble, flesh put the story and will do fine with the action scenes. Hopefully its The Avengers vs. the Hulk as Ive been touting for so long. It has to be a menace that can match the will and strength of the collective. It has to be the Hulk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Just imagine Thor getting in a slugfest with Ol Greenie, while Cap barks orders, Iron Man tries blasting away from the air and the Ant-man tries to sneak in the Hulk's body!! AWESOME!!!!!!!

His fans tend to be mildly Conservative, highly defensive and extra fond of inane cutesy babblings. BUT...Whedon is still very talented. His Firefly, Buffy & Angel episodes were generally the best directed, so don't imagine he doesn't know what he's doing. More importantly, however, he's one of the best directors out there when it comes to handling a large ensemble cast and making each character seem very distinctive and human. Isn't that one of the most important aspects about the Avengers project, not skimping on any of the characters?<p> Ignore the annoying Whedonites and look deep into your heart- this is good news.

I just want Spidey to be funny again. I love Raimi's Spidey. He just wasn't cracking wise against his enemies. He was a little too serious. Spidey is Peter Parker's release. He gets to brood and be depressed as Parker. But when he's in the suit he's the coolest, funniest cat in the room. Every incarnation of Spidey other than the movies gets this right. Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Spectacular Spider-Man, etc. The movies took his joking attitude and battle strategy away.

    He Knows Large Casts

    by Cartman86

He's already shown he can handle a large cast very well. I don't understand the questioning of his film talent. Serenity was totally fine film wise. I love that opening no-cut shot (though cheated like Children of Men). Favreuo had the same level of experience going into Iron Man, and look what he did with that. Lets not also forget episodes of Buffy like "Hush" and "Restless". Given the budget he had on that show I think he'll be fine. The only thing I "worry" about is that he's not writing this film. And that's just a selfish reason for worrying. There really is not reason to worry. If he wants to direct this film the script is good enough for him thus its good enough for me.

Yes we haven't seen anything he directed that has an "epic scope" visually, but do we need this? I'm not even sure that I he can't do this, but for the sake of argument is this what The Avengers movie needs to be? Could it be a smaller characters focused work? Do we need the whole "bigger is better" idea that has so far ruined so many sequels?

Who are these idiots suggesting John "Basic" McTiernan?

    by reflecto

It's been a long time since Predator, motherfucker. Since then he made Basic, BASIC. One of the worst, most ridiculous films I've ever seen. Can we all stop swiping from the nerd file liberally and talk sense, please? Chris Nolan is a great director but he's not going to do it and furthermore while he's made good Batman movies, THAT DOESN'T MEAN ONE SIZE FITS ALL AND HE CAN DO ANY OLD COMIC BOOK CHARACTER. HE IS NOT RIGHT FOR SOMETHING BOMBASTIC AND BRIGHT LIKE THE AVENGERS. AND A LOT OF THESE OLD FUCKS LIKE MCTIERNAN WHO WE LOVED IN OUR CHILDHOOD HAVEN'T MADE A GOOD MOVIE IN YEARS. JOE JOHNSTON MADE THE ROCKETEER LIKE 20 YEARS AGO AND HAS DONE SHIT SINCE, EXCEPT OCTOBER SKY, AND REALLY, ARE WE COUNTING THAT? Joss Whedon is also a nerd file choice, but at least he's got some passion and intelligence and doesn't seem TOTALLY off-base from the material or is not a studio hack (like LOUIS LETERRIER) who JUST HAPPENED TO MAKE A HALFWAY PASSABLE MEDIOCRE COMIC BOOK MOVIE.

    Thumbs down.

    by MR. MURDOCH

Though anyone can prove you wrong (as happened to me very clearly with Daniel Craig as Bond), I'm just not feeling this Whedon-does-Avengers idea. I'm admittedly not into Whedon's 'style', if you want to call it that. I've seen scattered episodes of 'Buffy' but never got interested in 'Firefly/Serenity'; nothing I saw of it ever compelled me to watch...kind of like 'Babylon 5'...but that's another discussion. I would have preferred LETTIER, actually, or McTiernan, or a lot of people. You're telling me MARVEL couldn't get one of these guys, reasonably priced, competent action directors who can handle big canvasses? I'd leave the dialogue and interaction on screen up to Downey and the others -- that's what they're good at. I'm not feeling this. But as Dennis Miller used to say, "That's just my opinion...I could be wrong." This could turn into a Fravreau-IRON MAN situation...but somehow, I doubt it.

    I fucking HATE Buffy...

    by Bootskin

I blame Buffy for the god-awful abortion that is Smallville, and the slew of similar crapfests that have come out since then. I'm also not a big fan of Firefly, I don't hate it, I just don't give a shit either way. BUT, I will say this; Whedon's run on Astonishing X-men was superb, and if he can breathe the same level of characterization into the Avengers that he did the X-men, then I'm all for this. (Hell, I was all for him doing Wonder Woman or the last X-men film.)

    I don't hate Letterier

    by kenjinattix

I think the first 40 minutes of The Incredible Hulk was very good. It just sputtered to the end after that. McTiernan was great. 10 years ago he would have been a great choice. But the man has been off his game for a while. He has to prove himself again before doing this. His last Film I think was Rollerball. I look for a directors of comic book films to have a love or at least an understanding AND RESPECT for the source material. Something Whedon definitely does. Runaways was also a very well done run by Whedon. He knows a lot more about comic book characters than Bay, or Letterier, or McTiernan, or even Abrams. If I could cast a director over Whedon...which I wouldn't at this point...it'd be Neil Blomkamp...but again...he's busy with Area51 pic.

I think he deserves a chance

    by Mockingbuddha

I'm skeptical too, especially after the way Wonder Woman died in his arms. Favreau isn't that great at action either, but he made a good movie. Whedon is one of us. He seems a little out of place in Hollywood, so much so that I thought he was being kicked back down to comics. Some of the interviews I've seen made me think he was just giving up on movies. Get him a good AD who knows action and effects and let Whedon play with RDJ, Ed Norton and the rest. Could be VERY good. Even if it sucks, giving one of US the chance to make this movie is something that should happen. Also: Someone up there said Nathan Fillon as Ant Man as a joke, but I don't think it's a bad idea. Especially if he played like that Hammer Time guy from Dr. Horrible... but with shrinking powers. Heh.

Look, I don't hate Joss, I actually love the first few seasons of Buffy and thought Serenity was better than average TV, but from everything I've seen of his work, the guy is damn near incapable of constructing characters and dialogue that don't evoke a feeling of valley girl snark. <p> Maybe if he's only directing, and not just the writer, he can avoid all that cutesy writer shit that made me start to hate Buffy and Angel towards the end, but while it's certainly not the kiss of death that would be Ratner or What Script? Anderson, this is not making me excited to buy a ticket for The Avengers. I'm extremely skeptical, but I hope he proves me wrong. Either way, he was a much better choice for the Runaways movie.

Whedonites piss me off. Nathan Fillion seems to be a pretty cool dude, but he is not a god. Neither is Felicia Day. Neither is Whedon. I enjoyed Angel, did not care for Buffy, and am indifferent about Firefly (the series; Serenity I enjoyed). Dr. Horrible was amusing at times. What I can get excited about is that this project hasn't been handed to a total retard. That, and Whedon HAS shown the ability to make his characters compelling, and the Avengers needs that.

To The Haters: About Whedon--And His Brilliance!!!

    by Media Messiah

Hell yes…and bravo to Marvel–for standing-up for a truly great writer/director!!! I can sometimes be Joss Whedon’s most harsh critic, because I know how great he can be when he believes in himself–and when he executes the even merger of art and commerce, he is at his best–but when he goes for the art, over his well being…commercially; specifically…to show the Hollywood ‘Big Wigs’ that such a merger can be done successfully, well, that is when Joss usually fails. That said, “Serenity” is one of the best films of the last ten years, and Joss’ TV efforts as a director/writer…have been truly stunning. “Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog” gave us 3 characters that we had never met before, and within 45 minutes, had us emotionally invested in them, loving them, caring for them, liking them, and cheering for them, so much so…that you laughed, and then were made to cry, and finally left in stunned shock and silence, in the end. Most of the latter was accomplished in a span of under 4 minutes–with a cold and shattering twist. Now that is just great writing, and great filmmaking–when you can take a silly harmless character, as your lead, and suddenly make him brutally evil, convincingly, and in that short of a timespan!!! <BR><BR> Further examples of Whedon’s best work can be found in the episode “The Body”, from Buffy The Vampire Slayer…which should have won him an Emmy, hands down, and “Once More With Feeling”, another stand-out episode, should have garnered Joss a second Emmy–industry politics aside, and “Objects In Space”, from the TV series “Firefly”…was masterful, and a tour-de-force. I refer all media journalists, film execs, and producers, to this episode, as well as “The Body”, “Once More With Feeling” and the other works that I mentioned, like “Serenity”…to really help you understand just what a great, and untapped talent, this man is. Truly one of the best kept secrets, in the industry. <BR><BR> Whedon has been ready to take his place alongside Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, and George Lucas…as an iconic filmmaker for many years now, and why the industry failed to open-up the door for him to do so, prior to this point, is puzzling and a shameful pity? <BR><BR> Kudos to Joss on this!!! Now, show the industry titans out there, what you are made of Joss–don’t ask for a seat at the table anymore, take your rightful seat at the head of the table, by driving home to them, once and for all, just what you can do, and why you have so many loyal fans!!! Congratulations Joss!!! Next, Wonder Woman–from your original script!!!!

    One things if for sure...

    by MR. MURDOCH

I'd bet Whedon will find a role for one or a few of his favorite actors...I'd bet my MARVEL comic collection that either Dushku, Glau, or Fillion (or one of the others) show up in this film in some capacity. Considering Dushku lobbied for Black Widow, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Whedon gives her a consolation prize...a cameo as Scarlet Witch, perhaps? Fillion (though I hardly know the guy) might indeed be a decent choice for Hank Pym, if he'll be in this picture. There, see, I'm already making Whedon work despite my disinterest... :-)

  • April 13, 2010, 6:54 p.m. CST

    it's fine

    by Rational_Faith

The vast majority of the audience won't care who's directing it so let's not pretend this choice will turn off any significant amount of viewers. Whedon will be fine. As many pointed out Favreau wasn't even on the radar of Action Directors when we heard about Iron Man. Kenneth fucking Branagh is doing Thor (awesome btw) and Leterrier had done fucking Transporter 2 (or three?). Past accomplishment in the genre matters little. What matters is basic ability and Whedon has directed some very good TV episodes and Serenity was competent at worst. I have a feeling there's a reason Marvel picked him, and it aint that he'll appeal to a particular niche of genre fans. Most of those fans would have seen this anyway and of the ones that wouldn't have (all of whom i imagine incorporating Thor into their fanfic now), they are statistically insignificant. Calm down peoples.

    Hey Media Messiah

    by Disco_sucks

It's not 'a puzzling and shameful pity' that Whedon hasn't reached the pinnacle of those other directors. It's because they're capable of making great spectacles loved by a large proportion of people across the world. Whedon's strength consists of making stuff with terrible dialogue that a small proportion of internet geeks love and no one else cares about.<p>The facts are these, m'lud. Whedon has made one hit his entire career and since then he's helmed two flop TV shows, a flop film and written excrutiating dialogue for two more. And yet here he is in charge of arguably the biggest comics property around. The fact he did this while continuously attempting to blame his failings on the companies who gave him these chances in the first place should be proof enough there's no conspiracy against him. There are plenty of directors who've proved themselves more throughly and shitloads of comic writers who could write rings around Whedon but, as with the Snakes on a Plane debacle, the studio has made the mistaake of taking internet postings as gospel.

...I always felt like they were a...well, let's be generous and say a riff...on the Ousters from Dan Simmons' Hyperion books. They were considered horrific barbarians but the payoff was something else that made sense. <p> Firefly was a mostly borrowed property, with all the western stuff taken directly and none too subtly from Mike Resnick's books about the Inner Frontier (Santiago and the Prophet and Widowmaker trilogies). But that's sort of what Whedon's always done and what he's best at, really. He's a geek and he has the good taste to be "influenced" by quality material. <p> My guess is the Reavers would have turned out to be something pretty close to the Ousters from Hyperion.

But everything else he's done hasn't just been bad, it's been friggin' terrible. He proved on Serenity that he can't even recreate the quality of his own tv shows on the big screen - it was a decent movie but far below par compared to the actual series. I don't think he's got the chops to pull off the minor miracle that's required to create a good Avengers movie. To balance huge characters, not to mention the massive actors of the egos involved, would be hard for the very best. I'm not hopeful he can manage it.

I'm totally down with Whedon at the helm. The man is damn good at bouncing characters off one another and since he has a background in writing he knows what works well on the page. <p> I can understand that some people are doubtful. After all, he has only directed one film (a great little sci-fi film) and he has yet to work with a real budget, but I've followed him through most of his projects and to me this feels like the next logical step in his career.

Apparently LOKI is involved...though I wouldn't be surprised if they use him in association with an Ultimates-inspired invasion narrative, considering both A) LOKI will be the heavy in THOR, and B) the approach so far seems very much a blending of classical MARVEL-isms with the ULTIMATES (see Jackson's Fury and the already-established idea of Hulk being an early "problem" that the Avengers are indeed assembled to handle).

One thing that needs to be said...

by the dolphins are in the jacuzzi

...and hasn't yet (and yes, I've read the entire talkback thread) is that Whedon CAN work with male actors/characters. People who say otherwise obviously aren't familiar with his work. If you actually watched Buffy, you'd know that about half of the characters on that show were male (Giles, Xander, Angel, Spike and Wesley, just to name the most important; and no, they weren't all effeminate underlings, either). Ditto with Angel. Ditto with Firefly/Serenity. Ditto with Dr. Horrible. And every time he works with characters and their interactions, he's on point. Now, I can understand reservations about his Diablo Cody dialogue, but he's not writing the script. And as for the cinematography/action scenes, bring in someone to assist (also already mentioned) That said, I'll still believe this when I see it because (as a few other TB'ers have already mentioned) we all saw what happened when Whedon told the studio that he knew better than they did about the direction of the Wonder Woman franchise: instant boot. But if this happens, I think it could actually be pretty good. And as for all you knuckleheads who would prefer to see McG or Bay, I want you to all go sit in a corner and think about what you said.

    by Colorsmith_Rob

Can't believe how many people here hate Serentiy. If a studio gives you $10 million and you can make a better movie, then feel free to talk. All the other favorite directors I'm seeing people whining about are great at making single star, or two-star movies. I can't think of one that's made a really impressive ensemble cast flick. Everything Joss does is ensemble. And he gets fans hyped - he's gonna put on one hell of a ComicCon show to talk about all of this. And the line will be three days long to see it. Also - I think Nathan Fillion would make a great, slightly schizo Henry Pym. And I can think of so many Joss women to play Wasp, but after seeing Charisma Carpenter at DragonCon last year, she's got my vote.

Joss Whedon's Avengers is going to be one the best superhero movies ever, or it's going to suck immensely. I am not a fan of Buffy, though I enjoy Angel, Firefly and Serenity so I don't see this film as having a chance of being mediocre. Either it's going to be a suckfest of remarkable, earth-shattering Battlefield Earth proportions, or it's going to rock really, really hard. But what it won't do is be boring.

Captain America has to be the lead...

    by Phimseto

<P> ...it would be ridiculous any other way, especially with an emphasis on Tony Stark or Nick Fury. Cap should be the balance between those two extremes: "Do what I say" and "I'll do what I want." If the brass wants there to be a focus on those actors, make that the main tension: Cap as the lead, playing off Fury and Stark's idiosyncrasies. <P> My problem is that "The Avengers" could be a great ensemble film, but there will presumably be a "needs action" push that short-changes the great actors involved.

snippets from a review of a Whedon directed Avengers

    by Miyamoto_Musashi

"In summary it was a mess, a pretty mess mind you and everytime that RDJ was on screen as Tony Stark he shone. <p> Per my summary comment the visuals were amazing, great cinematography and for the most part the action scenes were well done. <p> It was am ambitious project with a diverse group of characters, all stars in their own capacity coming together in one film. I think this movie has yet again proven that whilst something may work in one storytelling form it may not always translate to another. <p> Comparrisons with the X-Men movies another ensemble superhero movie have been made. But using a sporting analogy we often know that a Star Team can often be more successful than a team of stars. <p> In a star team everyone knows their part to play, where they fit in but in a team of stars, they can often get into each others way and in that scenario you need a Master Coach, one of the best. Whedon has done well in TV land but a Master Coach he isn't. <p> One last point that needs to be raised is what was Whedon and the scriptwriters thinking when they decided to introduce a sub-plot that had Thor changed into a teenage girl. Understandably fans of Thor and Chris Hemsworth are not happy. "

Look like any other piece of shit you'd find produced in-house for the Sc-Fi network or TBS or something.<p> I like Whedon's tv work on Buffy and Angel, did not care for his goofy space cowboys attempt, found Dollhouse rather unwatchable...so, yeah...Whedon has a mixed track record which mainly consist of television serial work and so naturally you give him--the biggest freakin' movie in your exciting and potentially brilliant new Marvel universe. <p> I am not hating on Whedom. I like him. I would have loved to have seen him take a crack at something like The Runaways where the pressure ans scope would not be so huge. I just think he is going to be out of his league here and the end result is going to suffer. <p> But I don't know who else was in consideration for The Avengers. Green Gargantuan: re: Reavers

    by phool2056

Calm down, try to get into a receptive mode. Okay? The idea of the Reavers is that they're the space version of the "Injuns" from Westerns. The reason that they can be crazy and also fly spaceships is that it's convenient to the story, and not all that implausible--whenever we see a Reaver head on, they're always in sight of somebody they want to rape and kill, and not particularly loquacious. I buy it, you don't have to. That's the argument. But back to the allegory. The idea behind the central conflict in Serenity is that it's an allegory for the way that "Injuns" work in classical Hollywood Westerns: they're savage, they're inhuman, they're a total misrepresentation of what any native American tribe was actually like. What Serenity says with its resolution, spoiler alert, is that the whole concept of the "Injun" as portrayed in, say, Stagecoach, is a fabrication of the culture that created them, a literal bogeyman created by classical Hollywood and Western novels to support civilization ideologically by providing a contrived negative example of its opposite. Serenity is subverting the basic dichotomy of the Western, that is, civilization v. wildness, by pointing out that large elements of the wildness are the constructs of civilization, and that civilization, as embodied in the assassin played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is itself brutal in its own way. So that's what the deal is with the reavers. Did you make it all the way through awake? Thanks, I didn't.

ve posts.....First, Marvel either cant or wont shell out for guys like Cameron, Spielberg, Nolan etc...But lets also be realistic here guys, Spielberg is still great, but he seems to have lost his ability to make big Summer films. Nolan's style is well suited to Batman, but Marvel's universe, and the Avengers are too pulpy and too sci-fi fir Nolan imho. Of them all Cameron is the one who could make an amazing Avengers film imho. You can say what you want, but look at his filmography, and look at Avatar, the dude 'gets' pulp, and more importantly, he 'gets' pulp serial sci-fi. Plus if nothing else, he still remains one of the handfull of Directors that seriously knows how to frame, shoot, and edit action scenes where you always understand the geography of the scene, and where the action is an extension of emotion or drives the story. And where there is no over use of close-ups, or quick mtv cuts. That being said, he would never do as he is far too busy expanding the Avatar universe, and preparing Battle Angle Alita with all his fuck you money.....

Whedon should be doing Wonder Woman

    by A for Aristocrat

His entire career led up to that, it was literally what he was born to do. Nothing up to this point in his career has shown me he can pull this off. To whoever used Angel and Firefly as examples that he can write men, you are just plain wrong. All he did on Buffy and Angel was flip gender roles. He just turned all the men into the damsels in distress and love interests. Angel literally spent 5 seasons (and Spike in season 5) moping around loving Buffy. Marvel needs to attach a director who can pull off a bad ass, kick ass superhero team. Not someone that will end a movie with everyone walking around moping while a sad song plays.

Iron Man: Can I have a Mojito or a PBR since I'm an alcoholic and stuff Thor: Under yon helmet shines a bright noble man. A man that fan girls want to see Odinson kiss. Hulk: Squeee!!! Jarvis: Sirs, I hear Whedonites scream with delight Wasp: I'm small, but one girl can change the world May God have mercy on this film!

    There's NO better choice

    by VermithraxPejorative

Whedon understands characters, and better than that he KNOWS Marvel. If people are really that concerned about Whedon's talent I suggest you look (by "look" I mean watch) at some of the episdoes of Buffy or Angel he directed and wrote with small budgets. Some of them are absolutely epic. Whedon writes with notes, he knwos when to pull back, he knows when to go balls out, he knows when to suprise his audience or make them laugh or scared. Sometimes it makes me sick reading these boards. The hate on Hulk is sad, Lettier did a great job of reviving a ruined franchise. The hulk was fun and entertaining with enough seriousness to make it great. Iron Man was simply a classic. Captain America has the right talent behind it. My only concern is Thor which I don't think fits too well into the established universe and Brannagh is a mediocre director with some terrible sensabilties. CHeck out Frankenstein, the writing was awful. Everyone here jsut likes to bitch because they think being cynical makes them superior when all it does is show the pretentiousness of failures in life. I say Whedon will absolutely nail this. The guy is meant for big things.

  • April 13, 2010, 9:46 p.m. CST

    I loved the Hulk

    by Josstossesthesalad

By that I mean the newer one with Edward Norton. As long as Thor is epic and mythological, I'll love it too. Again, Whedon's love of pop culture wit will not fit the Avengers.

Republicans shit all over Health Care but have no other plausible option. The hate just to hate. You shit on Whedon and your suggestion for another director is fucking implausible. Everyone I've seen on here who hates Whedon wants to replace him with directors who are either shit or directors who can't do this because of other obligations. These are the same people that hated on Favreau...then RJD....then Daniel Craig...JJ Abrams...then Chris Pine. Haters. And this is all pointless. Like you haters HONESTLY aren't gonna go see Avengers. Please. You'll be in line with the rest of us.

I know this will go unheard, but...

    by Roy.Batty

As much as I love Whedon, and his Buffyverse corpus is simply an indispensable part of my life, I don't think he would be a good match here. My suggestion: I know I will be booed but... STEPHEN NORRINGTON. Although his LEAGUE... was botched up somewhere along the way in production, his BLADE is solid proof that he IS a visionary, later imitated even by the likes of the Wachoskis... who, by the way, would be a terrific fit for this, too. Barring those, I would happily settle for Francis Lawrence or Gregory Hoblit. Not to forget Bryan Singer, of course. We REALLY need a true director here.

    by Roy.Batty

... But I see someone else mentioned Doug Liman. I would gladly add him to my list (despite his dreadful JUMPER). And since we are dropping names, let's add Kathryn Bigelow. Her POINT BREAK is a unfairly slighted classic, and NEAR DARK and STRANGE DAYS add merits enough to her credentials.

    Roy.Batty

    by kenjinattix

Norrington over Whedon...no. I agree Blade was great. But LXG is nothing to gloss over. I like Francis Lawrence...I even liked Constantine...but I think Whedon edges him out mainly because of his experience with the material. Bryan Singer is TOTALLY booked to the point where he can't do X-Men First Class. And Gregory Hoblit? He is more of a Thriller/Psychological drama director and I'm pretty sure he's never even seen a comic book

  • April 13, 2010, 10:24 p.m. CST

    Liman & Bigalow

    by kenjinattix

Are good. I see Liman doing a better job than Bigalow with this material seeing as he can do light and serious films. Bigalow would make that film a little too serious I think. Avengers isn't The Dark Knight. Its not so grim. Its tonally like Star Trek, which is why I wouldn't mind JJ Abrams.

    How many Frelling chances????

    by SlaveToTheWheel

Oh my various gods! Why do people keep giving this douche chances? Joss Whedon is one of the most derivative and populist writers I have ever come across. I mean, I get that "the Brown-Eyes", or whatever they are called, love him because they believe that anything written or produced before the inception of the WB doesn't exist, but seriously... Do some reading, and viewing of material produced before the 1990's and Joss Whedon becomes transparent. Just grow up and look around you. As usual, this film will fail and Joss-y (I love how his whole contribution to his art form is realistically just adding 'Y's' to words) will - as usual - blame someone else for HIS shortcomings.

    by grendel69

About Zakk Penn writting than Weddon directing. Even thought Fox put those bullshit guidelines for them to work with, Penn is responsible to applying those ideas to paper is the best way possible. Im sorry but XmenTLS isnt Ratners fault, its the Fox suits and the writters fault. I think Ratner did he best he could with the studio guidelines, crappy story and time limit he had. Im still amazed he got the film done in all honesty. I thought Astonishing Xmen started off great - too bad is dissolved quickly into a mediocre borefest. Im already a bit disappointed with the team selection. IMHO it should be CaptA, Iron Man, Antman,Wasp and Hawkeye with Thor in there as a late addition. War Machine? Black Widow? Uhhhh no. And BTW,Gore is a great idea.

    by Tall_Boy66

Ripley 8 is turning into a half-alien due to the cloning process, and the thing has been haunting her whole life, her sacrifice leads to a bastard half alien half human etc. etc. and in a really fucked up way it's Newt ver. 2 (Newborn and Newt even sound the same). Fine I get it. Ripley and the monster are the same. but goddamnit, it's not an interesting or logical way for the franchise to go. When the new bad guy kills off the previous bad guy, it's lazy writing to show how much of a threat the new bad guy is (Heroes Season 3 does this when they bump off the bad guy from the other season quickly). The movie missteps, very badly, when the Newborn shows up, and you can't lay that on the director, it's all in the script. Turn the flick off before the last 10 minutes? Sweet. Hell, just gimmie a Ripley 8 vs. Alien Queen Ver. 2 fight, with all the mercs backing them up. That woulda been neat. Not the fucking Newborn. Yeesh.

Thor and hulk - damned if you do, damned if you don't

    by Miyamoto_Musashi

Thor and Hulk really are the issue for me. If you use them as bit parts, people will complain that they weren't used enough. If they are used sufficently, too many super powered stars will make it a mess. <p> You could go with Hulk as the "villian" at the start, captured with mostly Banner in the supporting cast for most of the movie, with Hulk right at the end, i.e. Avengers facing defeat and they unleash hulk to help save the day. <p> Thor, is the more difficult one. <p> I could see an Avengers team with Cap, Iron Man (as the real stars, Cap trying to prove that he is really leadership material, a Luke and Han kind of relationship), with Hawkeye, Antman and Wasp as additions. <p>

We'll see. Let's not compare him to God just yet. He hasn't done anything worthwhile in more than a few years. Yes, he's a script doctor, but his work on Toy Story was a co-writing credit, properly displayed in the credits. However, according to some, his contribution was more conceptual and a lot of what he wrote into the dialogue was eventually changed. Look, he's talented, but I think this is a mistake. He's no Christopher Nolan and I think his skills lie more in writing than directing. What happened to Favreau?!!

    by RetroActive

I really don't have an interest in a superhero ensemble movie. One or multiple characters who should be significant will be relegated to water boy status to "sex up" another character. (See Cyclops in X-Men). Or dumbed down to the point of "why bother?" (See Colossus). I still think Wolverine, the ultimate badass, has been turned into something of a p*ssy on screen to market the toys. Marketing's marketing. I get it. But I'd love to see a grittier take with someone who's short and ripped, the way Logan's meant to be, and a lot more relentless and unpredictable. I think this movie will stink just because they'll never be able to put all of the pieces together properly without making it four hours long.

Lucas proved that budget is irrelevant

    by strosmer

Star Wars was made for $11 mil, which was considered low budget even in '77 - essentially the equivalent of making a feature sci-fi with toothpicks and popsicle sticks. He pulled it off because he was able to stick to his guns and surrround himself with the right talent. Does Whedon have the maverick spirit to pull off The Avengers? I don't know. I'm not that familiar with the man's work. As I posted earlier, I shut off Serenity after 10 minutes because it looked like it was made for TV. You gotta grip your (general!) audience right off the bat. As Ridley Scott once said, "You gotta get it. You have to get it now, because you're gonna wear what you got." If Whedon indeed gets the deal, he's going to have to top everything he's done to this point in order to satisfy the general audience - not just his fans. I also have my reservations about Captain America, but I'm willing to give both Johnston and Whedon the benefit of the doubt so long as they step up their game for their respective projects, and you never know when an artist will just nail it. Be bold you guys. Fight for your vision and ignore the studio notes as best you can. To quote another great filmmaker (Werner Herzog) - "The world is starving for new imagery." Give us something we've never seen before, and you can't really go wrong. Whedon was not my pick by a long shot, but here's hoping for the best.

The studio will have complete control here. Maverick spirit will be the last thing they're looking for. I appreciate your optimism, but I think this is a puppet job. Then again, maybe they'll find a happy medium. It'll be more Marvel influence on this project than than it was for Spidey 3 & Sony. Here's hoping!

    by BixbySnyder

<p>For Avengers, based on familarity of her work and her resume. I have not seen Serenity or any 'Firefly' or even 'Dollhouse'. 'Buffy the vampire slayer' i only saw snippets of when it was on.</p> <p>That being said, im not gonna be a hater until i see the end result. Hell, not even then. If it sucks, (according to me)then im gonna hypnotize myself to forget it. Im gonna give this guy the same benefit of doubt, that i have given to Joe Johnston though. That's pretty much ALL any of us can do.(Course, we can also bitch and whine or come up with ideas to "help".(Working on some of those.)</p> <p>However, this Whedon guy, seems to be a SW fan. So how can he get so much hate? Maybe he can ask uncle George for some tips on how to shoot action, and what the general public wants? One of my suspicions is that Favreu did the same. At least favreau has respect for his elders. Unlike most "geeks".</p> http://tinyurl.com/y7bhra6

But I retain extremely cautious optimism for both CA and Avengers until they are released.<p>I'm actually looking forward to Thor a great deal. Norse mythology on the big screen, even in it's bastardized Marvel form, is very intruiging to me. I have full confidence in Branagh's talents as a director. The thing I look forward to most in genre film is a push of the cinematic envelope. Branagh's effots on Henry V and Hamlet give me great confidence that Thor will be an unexpected success in the Marvel cinematic universe. I only wish I could have the same confidence in the subsequent Marvel features. Here's to hoping, indeed.

It's Hilarious seeing the Browncoats try to defend this ....

    by Kai_Mah'gra

......Herc thinks Whedon is an inspired choice because the Avengers needs to be a comedy and a character movie instead of an action oriented movie. Because, after all, when you have a movie with individuals having lots of superpowers, we fully expect them to make us laugh and relate to each other on a deep emotional level rather than, you know, use those powers to bash villains and bad guys. <p> Others are saying that he'sa good choice because Favreau also was not highly regarded when he was announced for Iron Man and yet he produced a great movie. Except of course for the fact that going into Iron Man, Favreau had not directed a turd of a movie which bombed at a box office (Serenity) and written the screenplay for another which killed a franchise with Sigourney Weaver as the lead and by introducing a totally unnecessary spawn at the end (Superman returns anyone??). That right there takes some doing. Oh, and Favreau also just happens not to be a douch full of himself with a rabid fanbase of delusional fanboys who put off every other person they come into contact with. <p> On the flip side, Favreau never directed an episode of Glee. So good thing they skipped over him for this, right? <p> Others are saying Whedon is a great choice because he's a great comic book writer and something of a legend in the marvel comic-book writing world. So then let him write comics.Alex Ross is an even bigger legend in the comic book world and I don't see anyone beating down doors to get him to direct this movie (of course if Marvel were smart they would try to get him to write the screenplay for this, but then again, they are close to selecting Whedon as their director, so you can be sure that smart is quickly out of the window hurtling down to its death below) Marvel have been stupidly lucky in their choices and their casting thus far with a few exceptions (Letterrier), but it was always clear that that luck was going to run out and that their cheapness was going to catch up with them and ultimately bite them up the ass. IT certainly will when Whedon begins doing press for this movie and proceeds to begin killing it long before they are even done with production and certainly after that first opening weekend when it' s released. I already feel sorry for Downey jr., Jackson, Evans et al. Their first bomb in these respective franchises - and some of them haven't even started production yet. <p> <p> I know lots of people who've gone from 'definitely there first weekend with ticket in hand' to...'I'll probably wait a week or 2 to hear what other people think of it, before going to see it' level of enthusiasm, since news broke of this. You think that a wrong director choice can't affect Box Office performance? Just ask those boys over at DC and their choice of Singer for Superman Returns.

Right on. One thing i can say about Josh Whedon and his Serenity movie is that he made a movie that felt epic on a pretty limited budget. JJ Abrams filmed a this huge expensive 4 times bigger budget movie and failed to show half the spectacle. Abrams must think that spectacle is planets blowing up. There's more to it then that. And frankly, the characters in Serenity are better handled with far better dialogue lines. Even the JJ Abrams' fanboys have to concede on that. Josh Whedonis far from perfect, but he's miles and miles and miles ahead of JJ Abrams.

  • April 14, 2010, 4:30 a.m. CST

This is good news. Great news, in fact.

    by Mr Gorilla

He's just the guy for this. And I really can't understand people who are down on Serenity. I've played it a number of times to friends who've never seen Firefly, never heard of Whedon, and every time they totally adore it. He's a much meatier action director than you guys give him credit for: witness all the Reavers stuff in the film.

  • April 14, 2010, 4:34 a.m. CST

And also - his stuff is actually ABOUT something

    by Mr Gorilla

Remember when action/adventure movies also had a thing called SUBTEXT and IDEAS. When they weren't just trying to ape Joseph Campbell by way of George Lucas. Well, Whedon does that. SERENITY actually has political and spiritual ideas. DOLLHOUSE plunges into really challenging territory. So, having a director who actually likes to DISCUSS something in his films is, for me, a massive massive plus.

  • April 14, 2010, 4:39 a.m. CST

@Mr. Gorilla - I have also seen Serenity in the company of

    by V'Shael

non-whedonites. I've never met one who liked it.<br /><br />Your milage varies, obviously.<br /><br />As someone who has liked a lot of Whedon's stuff in the past, including Firefly, I can honestly say I didn't like Serenity either. It was exactly what I was afraid it was going to be: "Buffy X" (this time, she's in space).<br /><br />Even when enjoying Firefly, I couldn't help but think the Reavers were basically a SciFi update to the Vampire myth. (They kill you, and make you one of them.) To turn River into a Buffy clone killer of Reavers was just pathetic.

  • April 14, 2010, 4:40 a.m. CST

    Good choice.

  • April 14, 2010, 4:43 a.m. CST

    And finally, the 'TV' criticism.

    by Mr Gorilla

If you guys mean 'shot on a low budget' - yes, I'd agree. SERENITY was made for $39m, in a year when MR & MRS SMITH was made for $110m, HITCH was made for $70m, FANTASTIC FOUR and CONSTANTINE were made for $100m. In that light, I think what Whedon achieved for SERENITY is astonishing: his movie blows those others out of the water in terms pure movie enjoyment.

  • April 14, 2010, 4:45 a.m. CST

    Fucking hell!

    by dude_gimme_tabs

I hate to resort to Rotten Tomatoes, but just go there and check out SERENITY. Not everyone likes it - of course - but generally people do. When a movie scores above 80% on that site, it's never going to actually be a lame movie. Regarding River - well, I never watched BUFFY so that wasn't a problem. It made sense to me. As did the whole thing of why Reavers existed.

  • April 14, 2010, 5:01 a.m. CST

I hate Whedonites as much as anyone, but

    by reflecto

I can't see anyone here offering any SPECIFIC REASONS WHY THIS IS BAD NEWS. Is Joss Whedon hit and miss? Yes. But more often than not he's good and he's a damn sight better than the studio hacks like Leterrier or Zak Penn who simply churn shit product out that fanboys still drop to their knees for if it merely gets the comic book onscreen, no frills, no real skill, no intensity. If you wanted another pedestrian affair like Incredible Hulk - too fucking bad. Simply saying "I hate the Whedon fanboy cult" (which we all do) is not a reason enough to say Joss Whedon on this film is a bad thing. If he's going to make it work with a real budget and stars, now is the time to prove himself. He has a chance he's never had before and I see no reason whatsoever not to give him the shot, especially with the alternatives being either a bunch of hacks or RIDICULOUSLY UNLIKELY FANBOY CHOICES like Kathryn Bigelow (who is great but will never do it after her Oscar) or a bunch of washed-up old geek childhood icons like John McTiernan. JOHN MCTIERNAN, ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS? IS IT 1989?

  • April 14, 2010, 5:14 a.m. CST

    Kathryn Bigelow

    by BixbySnyder

Was my choice, well before her Oscar. People called it ridiculous then too.(Jeremy Renner was also contacted by Marvel to play Hawkeye.) She could still do it, a well made Avengers flick would have a better message than any of her movies put together. (No disrespect) And a bigger platform. As for cash? One word: Disney, they could 'afford' her. But if it's this guy, sure im willing to keep an open mind...Just do the research, and dont fuck it up.

  • April 14, 2010, 6:08 a.m. CST

The reason I think Whedon is a good choice for this

    by smackfu

is that he has a lot of experience working on material that features a team working together, and he's a character-oriented guy, and a tough ensemble like Avengers is going to take a lot of work to make us invest in that many big-ego characters onscreen at once.

  • April 14, 2010, 6:12 a.m. CST

    Whedon deserves the chance.

    by swanman

He has done two stellar TV shows, two other good TV shows and directed a great movie with a limited budget. Then look at J.J. Abrahms. He has made three TV shows (maybe more?) that have been good at best and directed an under performing MI movie which was easily the worst in the series with a huge budget. Then he gave us an excellent reinvention of the Star Trek series. He had done nothing to indicate that he could handle it, but he nailed it anyway. Look at it this way: what is JJ Abrahms other than a poor mans Joss Whedon. If JJ can do what he did with Star Trek, there is no doubt that Joss can the same with the Avengers. It's about time this happened. He's deserved a chance at something this big for years!

Bombs away eh, hmm tell the truth:

I have a hard time understanding how well 'THOR' will go over in my country. Mostly no-one my age knows about Marvels THOR. Sure, we know about THE thor, the viking Thor. But THOR never had his own book here. Neither did Cap when i grew up, it's complicated.(Then again, neither did Iron-Man, OR the Avengers.) I had to read most of the american comics on 'the black market'.Hmm, sounds worse than it was, but yeah those were the good old days of censorship. I also think that Stan Lee would be a perfect spokesperson for Captain America. I know he didn't invent him, but he came up with lots of ideas for the character. And in a way, he's Marvels own living Cap. A real 'man out of time'.

Whedon is an over-rated bore. I've been reading comics for 25 years and IMO his run on Astonishing X-Men is nothing special (the return of Colossus...again!) I'd rather watch a DS9 suckfest, rather than subject myself to Buffy. I can't believe Marvel hired this guy to direct Avengers. They might as well have hired Kevin Smith. Sad day, indeed.

    Character Interplay

    by Dreamfasting

Whedon does a lot of good work with witty interplay of ensembles of characters and that's where an Avengers project really needs to shine ... you're going to have a lot of big egos (and different mythos) put into the same 2 hours.

We're all Whedon-ites in some form or another, so any complaints are of the "the dream director I wanted didn't get it" type. He knows how to deal with that dynamic of extreme polar opposites having to work together for a common goal, and have it come off dramatic and funny.

Kai_Mah'gra - Re: Browncoats try to defend this ....

    by sabrefox

Kai_Mah'gra: So if you had your way, they’d make a movie where all the characters are flat, there’s no emotional impact to the things we see on screen and all we see is people blasting other people with their powers. Oh wait, I think I’ve seen that already – X-Men 3. Maybe you should check it out. In order for any movie to be successful, it has to appeal to a general audience without alienating the prime target audience. Just look at Iron Man and the Start Trek reboot – each stayed true to their fans, yet included enough drama, heart, and comedy to have broad appeal. Although you might rather see heroes using superpowers "to bash villains and bad guys", having a story without characters that are human and relatable will lessen tha appeal to a general audience. The haters, including you, constantly disparage Whedon for his lack of box office success, yet what you want the film to be will have exactly the same effect. I certainly don’t want this movie to suck any more than you do. Ultimately, people go to movies for different reasons and what you floats your boat won’t necessarily float mine. Let’s just hope this movie floats a bunch of people’s boats. And leave it at that. Everyone else: I think that thing that most people have against Whedon is how long it takes for him to weave his story and get the audience to understand the characters. Most people don’t have the patience for it. Especially with Firefly and Dollhouse, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and felt greatly rewarded because of it. This decision for him to direct The Avengers is a smart use of his talent at taking a group of individuals and forging a strong team out of them. The character intros will have already been done so he can focus on working his teamwork magic. Some of the complaints/fears I’m hearing don’t make sense. I don’t think anyone has to worry about The Avengers breaking into Whedonistic quips unless it suits the character, i.e., I could certainly see Tony Stark being a prime candidate according to how he already been portrayed in the movie. Some people don’t approve of Whendon’s dialog in Astonishing X-Men and fear of the same thing happening in these movies. Hogwash. There is a huge amount of freedom in comics for artists to provide their take on the characters. New costumes, new looks, new dialog, etc… come with the territory and can just as easily be undone by the next artist that comes along. In movies, you can bet there will be more control, especially since this film will be the culmination of all the others before it.

    by chainsaw_shawn

Ok, it would have been Favereau, Louis Lettierer, JJ abrahams, Bryan Singer, and Joss Whedon. I dont know why is everyone hating on Whedon. this guy writes the astonishing xmen comics for christ sakes. This guy is an uber nerd who knows his material. Zak Penn who has touched everything almost filmed with a marvel name is a good choice. Joss whedon has never had a chance to prove himself on the big screen, some of the people will love it, alot will like it, only a few will love it. The only thing to matter to the big corporate offices is money. Period. We as fans want the director to have a love for the fans and a love of the work he films. Joss whedon knows his shit. we can all agree on that! Why have a non-comic book director film something that's so precious to us? Give the guy a chance. I liked buffy, loved angel, hated firefly. lol. So there you go. It might work but you got to have the right people behind it. If the story is solid and the directing is great why should anything else matter?

    by A for Aristocrat

Even if it is as bad as some people think it will be and he stays true to form with his "tiny girl can fight" schtick, there is no way he can screw this up. This movie will be coming off of the major success of Iron Man 2 and probably Cap and Thor. The built in audience will turn in just to see it no matter how lousy it is. This is a no lose for Whedon. There is no way this will lose money and it will give Whedon his first big mainstream success in movies. But to be honest, Uwe Boll could direct this movie and it would be a hit.

    relationship banter

    by ME_M

Yep J-Dizzle, "Star Wars" was a terrible film, because Han Solo and Greedo talked about relationship issues before shooting their blasters. And how about Luke and Darth Vader in the next two films? All this stuff about searching your feelings and feeling hate, took away from the light saber fighting. Or what about Hudson in "Aliens"? No need for him to be screaming stuff that makes him a coward or a beserker, it would have been much more interesting just to have him quiet and calmly shooting his gun. (/sarcasm off)

Whedon is absolutely perfect for this. He and Favreau will make a great team - they already have a great rapport. I remember reading a joint interview with them where they really seemed to get on well together. Like others have said, he's great at ensembles, won't rush good character moments like some directors (Ratner!!), has directed great fight sequences, and most importantly, he GETS the Marvel Universe, more than almost any director I can think of. I love the story of him breezing into a Marvel planning meeting afer they had painted themselves in a corner with Civil War, and came up with an idea that saved Millar's ass. This is the best news I've heard in a long time. Haters suck it!!!!

When not held in check, he makes work that begins solid then drifts fast and hard (see some of the Buffy episodes he directed) or how he allowed the terrible season 6 of Buffy to happen. I hope they have strong voices from Marvel itself present during the various stages of the production. Not suits, but actual non-Whedon worshipping Marvel-related writers. Also, I know it's nice when your favorite show's creator gets a directing gig you should be allowed to be excited (CNN talkback people), but seriously, don't demand they bring the fairly dinky TV values of his shows into the movies. If one more person says any version of "shiny" to me, I may just ... complain here.

I'm not always a Joss Whedon fan, but I admire most of his work. He seems like a good guy to direct a superhero film like this.<p> His strengths as a director are that he generally casts well, pulls above-average to great performances out of actors, and has a good sense of what works.<p> I wish him well on this project. Hope he pulls it off in style.

<p>Myself, i never even dreamed of an avengers movie as a kid. Hell, back then i just wanted a decent Spidey movie. (And a Hulk that could jump and fight the army.)I waited a looong time for that. I could never dream back then, that an Avengers movie might happen.</p> <p>Also, Dc licenses? Doesn't WB own Dc? Or are the individual movie rights for some characters, divided between people like the 'hairdresser from the streets'?</p> <p>They should at least make solo-movies. 'Martian Manhunter' could be done, 'Flash' could be done, 'Wonder Woman' could most certainly be done. Hell, 'Aquaman' could be done. And like i've said before: 'The Question' could be an awesome tv show, X-files style. Preferably on HBO.</p>

He knows how to do ensemble pictures as well as sci-fi action. So what you want about Serenity, but the space battle was pretty boss as well as the final fight. He knows the characters and works on a shoe string budget. With Disney owning this thing, you can bet this budget is not going to be as big as Avatar maybe even as big as Thor. I think he can pull this off as long as he can get the cast behind him which he seems to do very well in that department.

Yeah, I meant movies featuring Marvel characters. I'm not completely down on the new Spider-Man, they seem to have picked a competent director, but I also don't think he has any big movie experience, so I remain cautiously optimistic. SM2 is my favorite superhero film of all time, and I highly doubt the new one can reach that height, but we'll see. <p>Johnston and Whedon are not directors whose films I anxiously await, so Cap and Avengers are not films I'm looking forward to. I would have liked to have seen a Spielberg directed Captain America, but I know that's just shitty pipe dreams.

    by The Reluctant Austinite

Here's an exciting rumor buzzing around today; we might get our first look at Thor in the secret, after credits sequence in "Iron Man 2". It makes sense. "Thor" is the next Marvel film to be released on the rode to "The Avengers" and production is far enough along to make this happen. Is it true? If it is, how will it go down? Will they just tease Thor with some lightening and a hammer found by Stark or will he actually appear on screen?

I like Joss. He's a dependable, consistent writer who knows his genre and nails it more often than not. He is not a feature director - never has been, never will be. I saw Firefly and it was well written and horribly directed. Why any studio would trust their tent-pole franchise for the next 10 years to a director who is yet to prove himself is beyond me. IMO there are maybe 3 directors qualified to do the Avengers film: Favreau, Nolan and Jackson. If you cant get any of those guys wait for someone better. Maybe Joss can work on a script draft/re-write to pass the time.

Redteeb. Get a hold of yourself.

    by Hint_of_Smegma

Serenity was ok, but it was hardly great. Neil Blomkamp made a film for less money that looked much more expensive, was much more dynamic with more character development and better action scenes, plus a more relevant story and with better performances than Whedon managed with Serenity. He's at best an average director, and as a writer he relies on poor, unrealistic dialogue and cliché far too much. Stop acting like he's the second coming - it's a bit ridiculous.

  • April 14, 2010, 10:13 p.m. CST

Wait... How is Serenity a great example?

    by SlaveToTheWheel

Considering it contains one of the most gaping character crashes in film history? You have a character who is a justicar of some discription, who has been genetically engineered and indoctrinated into doing whatever the hell it is that he does, just to turn around and change his mind about his whole life in the last 2 minutes. How is that even possible??? As the holder of a Bachelor of Applied Social Science, and a writer to boot, it is one of the most ridiculous things ever seen! It borders on being as stupid as the Alien Newborn! Now as lovers of film, and therefore, presumably, character and story, how are people like Herc able to defend these travesties? The question my wife (who is a huge Buffy and Angel fan) asked me when I told her about Joss Whedon being offered more work after producing such shit of late - then blaming everyone except himself for their downfall - is: Whose cock is he sucking?

  • April 14, 2010, 10:20 p.m. CST

I'll tell you what: Does Whedon have what it takes

    by rabidfnark

to direct a HUGE film like this? I don't know. None of us do. We can't...not yet. I mean, it hasn't happened yet. But I'll tell you this: the man has made me smile, laugh out loud, and cry (Buffy, S5,'The Body'...maybe that makes me a pussy. You tell me.) and that's more than 80% of the other director's (TV and film) out there have done for me. He made me care about short blond cheerleader (or close enough) who fights vampires, and to me, that's impressive. I suppose there's a chance he'll run The Avenger's right into the fucking ground, but I think it's a chance he's earned.

  • April 14, 2010, 10:35 p.m. CST

Rabidfnark. That whooshing sound you hear.......

    by Hint_of_Smegma

    FuzzyLumpkin,

    by REVENGE_of_FETT

Yes, this is 2010 and although Blu-ray has been the standard for 2 years and HDMI has been the standard for 5 years, Apple hasn't caught up with the fucking times yet. 500,000 bought the first day, 250,000 returned or sold the next. 250,000 dumbfucks who bought a bigger version of what they already fucking hade.....and were happy about it!

  • April 14, 2010, 11:11 p.m. CST

    There's a chance of that, I suppose.

    by rabidfnark

But this isn't Uwe Boll or Brett Ratner we're talking about. Whedon has a better sense of things then that (i'd say MUCH better). When it comes to this level of film makikng he's largely untested, it's true, but so was Brian Singer, Jon Favreau, even Christopher Nolan. Yet a lot of people seem to want to write him off without a chance. I'm not saying "Give him the Oscar now," I'm saying, "Give the man a chance." This is still quite aways off anyhow, maybe minds will start to change when we see some artwork down the road. But maybe not, the man is nothing if not polarizing.

  • April 14, 2010, 11:16 p.m. CST

And to whoever said above that Hercules was calling

Saw Serenity yesterday. Excellent. Found out that Whedon is a huge Comic book/ComiCon fan. These together make him a great choice to direct a colossal superhero movie like the Avengers. by darthflagg

usually base it on seeing half an episode of Buffy or Angel one time. The man is a genius, anyone who gives his work half a chance will realise that. So what if he hasn't done a big screen epic before? The man knows character, and he has more action directing experience than Singer had before X-Men, Fav before Iron Man or even Peter Jackson before LOTR. If this movie comes out right (i.e. the suits don't mess it up) Whedon will finally earn the mainstream acclaim he deserves.

I'm glad the highly unbelievable happened: a good Avengers movie was made. I would have sworn it was an impossible feat. Still kind of scratching my head. I'll be there opening day, but honestly still think I'll be a tiny bit disappointed. For me, the first Iron Man film was Marvel's best to date. If I like it as much as that one I'll be pinching myself. Is this shit real? Because it feels like some dude put a dream inside my dreams 'cause he heard I like dreams.

Nothing personal, but YOU are the reason that many people hate Joss Whedon (and this is coming from someone who loves Joss Whedon). Whenever a criticism of his work turns up, it's usually accompanied by a criticism of his rabid fans: the kind of fans who will spend hours single-handedly bumping a two-year-old article up to the top of an aggregate filter, just to remind everybody who claimed otherwise that Joss is a god, and to rub their wrong opinions in their faces. I hope that the success of The Avengers gives the guy more exposure, and I'm glad that he's made a movie everybody seems to enjoy, but seriously, show a little dignity and let that be enough.

eloy and dahveed - you've officially done Grand Talkback Theft!

    by wtriker1701

A crime, gotilk and I have created years ago with Doctor Who talkbacks - who've become officially DOCBACKS! So, you're - for sure - not the first ones. And thinking about it - there are a lot of TBs going on right now reagarding Tony Stark, Joss Whedon and The Gang - so WHY taking this one up high? It just makes no sense at all...

  • So we HAD to! And look - what happened? A weekly DocBack! Yes, WE did it! FIRST! Bitches!

FRIGGIN AWESOME! Easily the best Marvel movie ever. I gotta say, at first, I was worried about The Avengers. I just didn't think Whedon had enough experience with this genre to take on the biggest superhero movie of the decade. But I underestimated his awesomeness. Joss Whedon, You are awesome.

You're correct, I was mistakenly lumping you in with eloy since your schtick was identical. It *actually* took you 36 minutes, which I'm pretty sure is longer than it took me to write my three sentences, and for a far stupider reason. I don't think you even know what my 'thing' is. I agree with your general message of "yay Avengers," despite the fact that I think you're going about it like a weirdo. I was hoping you would take at least a minute to consider what I said, but I can see constructive criticism rolls off your back like water off a duck.

he nailed it: "usually base it on seeing half an episode of Buffy or Angel one time. The man is a genius, anyone who gives his work half a chance will realise that. So what if he hasn't done a big screen epic before? The man knows character, and he has more action directing experience than Singer had before X-Men, Fav before Iron Man or even Peter Jackson before LOTR. If this movie comes out right (i.e. the suits don't mess it up) Whedon will finally earn the mainstream acclaim he deserves."
