Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I've been wondering when BLACK SNAKE MOAN and HUSTLE & FLOW director Craig Brewer was going to get his next project. I love both movies and think Brewer's one of the most interesting voices in filmmaking today. That is, of course, to this Alamo Drafthouse-educated film nerd. Black Snake Moan felt like a slice of '70s soul... so did Hustle & Flow now that I think about it. So, what does that mean for FOOTLOOSE now that he's stepped in to direct? I'd be a bit worried, but Variety's breaking story also mentions that he wrote the latest draft of the script as well. He has a radically different vibe than High School Musical's Kenny Ortega, who was previously directing the picture and I'm fascinated to see what Brewer will make. I'd imagine the clash between rock and roll loving teenagers and the strict adults will be a bit darker than they would have been in Ortega's flick. I'd much rather see Brewer doing his own original material, but if a high profile, surely profitable studio film means more original Brewer than I'm all for it.
