UPDATED: AMERICAN IDOL's Rickey Minor Becomes Jay Leno’s Bandleader in June!!

Published at:  Apr 14, 2010 2:45:50 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

UPDATE: Rickey Minor, musical director for "American Idol," will become the new musical director for "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno" starting June 7, NBC announced Tuesday.

ORIGINAL POST:

Kevin Eubanks announced Monday he’ll be departing “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno” May 28, two days after May sweeps ends.

Eubanks and Leno have been together since 1992, when Eubanks joined the “Tonight Show” band. In 1995 Eubanks replaced less-ticklish Branford Marsalis as the series’ bandleader.

Max Weinberg, who has indicated he'll not be joining Conan O'Brien's talk show launching on TBS this autumn, has been rumored as a Eubanks replacement, but I can't say I put a lot of stock in that rumor.

Though Leno's "Tonight" ratings are still down from where they were before Conan O'Brien took over "Tonight," Leno still usually wins his late-night timeslot with about the same 18-49 rating he was pulling toward the end of "The Jay Leno Show's" run in primetime.

Musician Slash recently performed on the Leno version of "Tonight" wearing a "Team Coco" button.

    Conan without Max?

    by frankenberry

I hadn't heard Conan was moving to TBS without Max Weinberg. So Conan's new show won't have Max, Joel Godard, and any of his most popular sketch characters? Well that sucks.

    by rectalblowout

the band sucks with that chick howling going into and out of every commercial. The theme songs sucks ass. I'm watching Conan. Just because it's on TBS doesn't mean it's bad. It'll grow in popularity.

    by shabbyblue

That comes off as a bold-faced betrayal of Conan and makes it look like Max values more money and exposure over any long-time friendship with Conan.

And any truth to Kevin leaving cuz of Conan?

    by shabbyblue

I recall reading a few weeks ago that Kevin took Conan's side behind the scenes during the whole fiasco and Leno and NBC resented that, holding a grudge against the guy and basically forcing him to resign. It's being made to look like Kevin is CHOOSING to leave even though he's supposedly being forced out. Any truth to that rumor, insiders??

    Max has been disrespectful...

    by moviemenace

since Conan moved to The Tonight Show. He went on tour a week after they started and when Max was back he had a very flippant attitude toward the Conan and the show. Conan would throw to Max and half the time he wasn't even paying attention. There was a particular moment when Conan seemed annoyed at Max when he missed a rimshot 3 times for guest Garry Shandling. He even had a television set-up so the band could watch a game during the taping of the show without Conan's knowledge. As far as I'm concerned the dude doesn't deserve to be on either show. Max is Hank Kingsley with drumsticks.

I think Max's aloofness may have less to do with not caring and more to do with the schedule he was carrying, doing double duty performing with Bruce and Conan for awhile there. I also wonder if there any actual truth to Max ditching Conan at TBS, I wonder if it's a rumor drawn from the fact that Max isn't doing the Conan live show tour.

    by yackbacker

If you decide to go on Leno, man the fuck up. If you are truly w/ Team CoCo, stay the fuck off his show. Period. Fuck Slash, by the way- cutting a track with Fergie is a cunt's move. Doing another with Nicole Scherzinger is the epitome of sell-out. Slash... (sigh) I give you a pass for your GnR work, but come on man. The Pussycat Dolls? Yeah, you're a real arbiter of taste and keeping to your standards.

    by bumlove

I once attended a taping of Conan's show in NYC a couple years back...and Conan's monologue wasn't particularly funny that night...to me anyways...so I was one of the only people not laughing at the jokes...and Max Weinberg was staring me down. I shit you not. During Conan's monologue Max was glaring at me...so then I forced a few guffaws at Conan's jokes until he looked away.

    moviemenace, Max was not disrespectful.

    by ozy

You should get your facts straight before attacking him for going on tour with Bruce Springsteen. Max had never missed a tour since he first joined the E Street Band but decided to miss the beginning of the 2009 tour so he could be on The Tonight Show for the first few weeks. The Tonight Show started June 1 and Max didn't leave to join the tour til the end of June, Max's son had filled in for him as drummer during his absence from the tour. Later Max took another break from the tour to return to the show for a few months before rejoining the tour for it's final dates. Max also like a lot of the show's staff made a huge change in his life by moving out to LA to join Conan. I also don't think the rumors of him not joining Conan on TBS and lobbying to replace Kevin Eubanks are true.

    by bouncy x

i too remember reading during the whole Leno/Conan fiasco how Kevin wouldnt be returning once Leno got the Tonight Show back. so i was surprised when he in fact did, but now he announces he's leaving. so there might be truth to him being pissed and them just making a nice public exit despite whats happening behind the scenes.

    Max

    by the funketeer

I can see Max not joining the new show but this stuff about him being disrespectful is a lot of hooey. When he started the show, Springsteen had pretty much abandoned the E Street Band but even when the reformed, Max stuck with the show in between tours. I hope he's back but I would understand if he wanted to rededicate his time to Springsteen.

    Max will land Tonight Show

    by smudgewhat

i'd almost guarantee it. he stuck with Conan at 12:30 for nearly 20 years to land the coveted Tonight Show Band moniker (plus moving to LA to get it) and then he had it yanked. Max is a phenom musician. i hate Leno but i wouldn't blame Max for taking the gig and then turning it into a full big band, Doc Severinson style. bring back the glory.

@ smudgewhat + Slash Coco Stylin'

    by colloquiallyborn

Yeah, miss the old school big dans on these kind of shows. Leno killed them when he changed the recipe on the Tonight Show Band.. But, I don't think that Max would jump on board the Leno Show after he stabbed them in the back like that.hopefully...One of the thing I do agree from previous posts, is the fact that Slash wore a "I'm with Coco" button on the TOnight Show, and for me, that is kind of two face isn't it? I mean if you really do support Conan, then don't watch the Leno show, don't accept to be on the Leno show.. Go to Letterman instead. But wearing a button.. I mean come on dude.. Walk off the stage.. don't play.. Playing on the show only says that you don't mind what Leno did as long as you get publicity to sell your album. Be with Coco.. Boycott Leno!

and I saw Leno invite Eubanks out to chat with him about this. And it was Grade A awkward. There is obviously something else going on here, Eubanks looked like a little kid being made by his mother to go thank his great-aunt for the knitted sweater.

UPDATE: Doc Severinsen is negotiations to return to The Tonight

    by eastbayfrankenstein

....AND return to LIFE, for that matter! Late word has it that Doc has been speaking in earnest with NBC execs through a pychic medium. The only sticking points thus far are vacation days, input on musical guests, and his complete lack of a physical form (Doc's body was cremated years ago). NBC is willing to work with Severinsen on the first two areas, but they are insisting that Doc's ghost inhabitat an empty human vessel before returning to the show. The name "Shia LaBeouf" has been floated around quite a bit.

UPDATE (again): Rickey Minor is ALSO dead!

    by eastbayfrankenstein

AP just reported that Rickey Minor has died from "complications related to terminal boredom". Apparently he was subjected to large sample doses of Leno's monologues as a precondition to finalizing his Tonight Show contract. As a result, Minor evidentally went into what doctors are calling a "severe lameness coma" brought on by the lethal unfunniness of Jay's "comedy". Rickey Minor was rushed to a local hospital, but was declared DOA once admitted. Emergency staff said there was just no medical procedure available to cope with such a massive intake of anti-comedy. In a related note, Doc Severinsen still INSISTS that he is, in fact, alive even though I say he's dead.
