Tomorrow Night's SGU!!
Merrick here...
...with a quick preview of tomorrow night's STARGATE UNIVERSE episode, "Divided."
In short, this ep is about what happens when some of the Destiny's crew decides they know how to run things better than Col. Young. Tension and danger ensue as a war of wits tests parties on both sides of the fence.
I've seen this episode - and really liked it a lot. I do understand criticisms that this series is essentially BATTLESTAR by way of STARGATE, but there's much more to SGU than that; SGU's headed in some unexpected, and interesting, directions since its opening installments. They're playing with narrative strategies, and willing to take a bit of a chance with the kinds of stories they tell (an episode called "Time" being a good example). Like BATTLESTAR, the series' characters are shaded in grey. But, personally, I find this show's "people" to be drawn a little less OTT...less audaciously...than GALACTICA's denizens. This feels more...accessible.
It's hard to set-up the photos below without revealing too many spoilers, but suffice to say they're all from fairly critical moments to the episode's storyline...moments which may well resonate well beyond tomorrow night.
These are EMBIGGENABLE!!!

Also, HERE's a brief look at the filming of a fight from last week's episode - "Space."
Nothing terribly insightful, but it's cool to see a "before" and "after" of the alien effects in that piece.
SGU returned to SyFy with new episodes last week after a mulit-month break, and has already been picked up for a second season. If you haven't checked it out, consider doing so.

I was a fan of both the stargate series and BSG, but for different reasons. I thought blurring the two would be a disaster, but so far its been ok. The love triangle story lines are a little much though, so here's hoping they get back to the more interesting stuff like the aliens and Doctor Rush!
-
That's the big problem for me. None of the people act remotely like, well, anyone you'd know. Their reactions to everything are just... not right.
-
start some major story arcs. The last episode kinda seemed to hint in that direction. I just hope they don't drop back into the tired cheesiness that crippled Atlantis SG-1 from about season 4 on. I watched some of the Showtime era SG-1s a few days ago, amazing how much different the tone was from how the show ended.
-
They have the best badminton scholarship program in the world. Frack.
-
I wasn't a big SG anything fan, caught a few eps here and there, but I have watched this one from the beginning and keep coming back every week. Good stuff.
-
As is the brunette lieutenant with the huge ass rack. And would it be so f'n hard for the new series to give them a ZAT as standard issue weapons? I LOVE THE ZAT'S SOUND EFFECT! Oh well. Boobs.
-
There is a decided break between this show and prior Stargate shows that they could patch a little without damaging the independence of the show (personally, I'd love for them to take McKay from SG:A and put him on the ship for a couple episodes to see what his personality quirks would do in a cutthroat and disfunctional environment), but I like it as is. If you have not seen it, try it out.
-
I thought SG-1 looked ridiculous. A friend finally convinced me to give it a shot. I'm now halfway through season 9 and I admit I was completely wrong. The show is well written and you can't help but care for the characters. Richard Dean Anderson is perfect and Amanda Tapping is brilliant. SGU is certainly quite different but it's pretty interesting. I think it was great that they were able to get Robert Carlyle. He is putting in a hell of a performance.
-
Shit, it's been quite a ride. Hated SGU at first but it has shown glimmers of awesome... like the episode "Time" mentioned above, and the episode before they went on break. I didn't even know the show was back until a friend let me know. Last week's episode was decent, I like the continued conflict between Young and Rush. As for last week, did they give any explanation for why Young and the alien switched bodies when he used the stones?<p> I would definitely love to see Rodney McKay show up for an episode, but that fucker would figure out how to fly the ship and give it hyperdrive and weapon upgrades before the first act was over.

I'm going to build a shrine to her in my backyard.

Best characters on SGU: Grier and the huge rack brunette
by turketron_2
nd Rush (Robert Carlyle). Chloe is annoying.
-
they REALLY need to work on the character writing for this show. I watch it, sure, but I don't buy one single character as being 'real'.
-
forgot the link to her pic
-
because nobody's ever done that before.
-
But you know what's better: Breaking Bad.
-
I've never been a fan of the stargate tv shows. The showtime seasons of SG1 were decent, but once SCI-FI picked it up it devolved into a jokey, campy, borderline slapstick cartoon. SGU on the other hand at least has some character development and edge to it. The stories have been kind of dull so far, but not nearly as groan inducing as the other shows.
-
Wow, guess ppl can have polar opposite reviews/opinions. This show is great mostly in part to how realistic everyone behaves. Are there some "semi-stereotypes"? Sure, but there's also a few that live next door and I went to school with many - real life. Hope there is a bit more fun than the dry serious stuff in the first handful of episodes. Seems like Space is leading the way and many, many nice actors jumping on board next season!
-
was fun since: a) it played by SG consistency rules (solar flares) and b) it was neat to see that 'our' reality was alternate timeline 3. <p> AND TJ the blonde medic is the best character on the show. <p> What does seem to be missing is the military SF vein, which was very present in SG1 and slightly lessened in SGA. I guess this is to be expected with so many civilians on board, but there does not seem to be the mindset that 'the mission must succeed' and 'people are going to get killed, but let's try to ensure they didn't die in vain.' <p> Still hoping for an Honor Harrington TV show. The SG series and Battlestar have given hope it is possible.
-
I was skeptical watching the pilot, but really like the direction this series is going. (With one exception: The Lou Diamond Phillips stuff. It seems like he accidentally stumbled in from an adjoining soundstage sometimes.) The look of the series is terrific, Carlyle and the cast have been great and I look forward to each episode. There, I said it!
-
The odd thing is, I think the reason that I like this one more than SG1/SGA is that they've excised most of the campy elements that others loved. It actually reminds me of Legend of the Seeker compared to Hercules/Xena. By treating the characters/stories/audience with more respect and consistency, it makes for a much better and more entertaining show.
-
Anyone who describes it as 'battlestargate' may as well be a mindless hollywood marketting exec tbh. While it has take BSG to heart in its cinematography and character development (oh no, what a shame! Right?), it's way more fantastical in its sci-fi elements. Not only does it have the immense Stargate lore to date on its shoulders, its doing stuff with time-travel and aliens. I love BSG, but come on..this isn't nearly as poe-faced and grounded.

Is it okay to admit that i kinda like this show?
by ISleptWithKathyBatesAndAllThatIGotWasThisStupidTalkbackName
I only started watching it because Robert Carlyle is in it (and I think he's a great actor) but it's grown on me and i find myself oddly entertained by it.

I liked the blue aliens! I kinda wish they'd get rid of the communication stones though. Apart from last episode, they've been responsible for all the not-so-good bits in the show (I have no desire to see the episode "Earth" again, for example).
-
The pace and quality has got better, this is about to start again in the UK, glad to hear it has second season pick up, def worth checking out, in HD it looks fabulous.
-
Stargate got its own thread on AICN.
-
ugh, the communications stones are a worse sci-fi writers crutch than transporters, holodecks, and the sonic screwdriver combined. Seriously, it was a terrible idea to begin with, but on this it severely detracts from the story.
-
Daniel Jackson character is being brought on for a few episodes. Probably a ratings test. "Space" is probably the best SGU episode to date but I don't see the show having the budget to carry on the trend.
-
It seems as if he was here just yesterday. <br> Sucks when people die, but at least all of his lobbying for SGU is paying off.
-
Royalty among peasants. FUCK you guys for saying i died! in fact soon very soon i will live! if you catch my drift.
-
for next season and it will have more vfx than space, a problem coz its eating up the budget.
-
i seem to be the only one on earth who does, i just like the possibilities it opens up, story-wise, although they exhausted them all i think.
-
i seem to be the only one on earth who does, i just like the possibilities it opens up, story-wise, although they exhausted them all i think.
-
When do they find the weapons locker on the ship? I mean, they are still using Metal Projectile weapons with no way to get more ammo. And another thing, The Communications Stones STAY!!!!!!!!!! There are some people who would like to see the SG1 & SGA characters again, the stones give those people hope. We are not getting anymore movies.
-
only two on earth who does and they havenot exhausted them all.
-
i promise i wont do anything "bad" with yours lol
-
Those stones are for offical use only. Last time I looked, I was not part of the SGC.
-
I still don't even know the characters names because I don't like any of them. This show is trying to be something it isn't. They have ditched the humor that made SG1 so good. The only characters I care about are big boob marine and hot younger chick. The rest could be flushed into the vacuum of space and nobody would care. Indeed.
-
The pwoers that be realized they were using the stones too much and have said they adjusted things eventually. It looks like the blue aliens would be one reason/way to limit the stones' use since they can't guarantee the minds won't get intercepted by one of those again.
-
The Stargate series have never gotten a fair deal on AICN as they always appeared to have either been overlooked or intentionally ignored. I'm glad SGU is getting some attention and now a mention on the site to perhaps built more interest.
-
is a bucket of butt stink via the trailer park<p> Not one likeable or even interesting character<br> Which is a bad thing in a character driven drama
-
I was generous and tuned in for the second episode after the pilot, only to be let down by a blatantly BSG-inspired, boring, poorly-written, poorly-acted shitfest. That's all I'm willing to give it. Kill it.
-
while he was secretly watching SGU pretending he didnt like it. i think a SGU talkback is in order, especially after lost ends.

SGU is about as worthy of a talkback as a Syfy original movie
by slayme
both are so lame only someone equally lame like Dioxholster could really like it. Sad to see Merrick fall under the spell of the worst Stargate spin-off so far. Hopefully SyFy will realize their mistake and cancel this show after nobody watches it in season 2.
-
and thats the least important aspect of season 2 if you can believe it.
-
fuckin trash...just like what atlantis turned into during the final season. if we're lucky there will be two good eps per season.

the way the story has been layed out so far could potentially give way to lots of exciting story arcs.

out on the net. I would link to it but, I have no desire to feel the sting of the ban hammer. Let's just say that "they are real and they are magnificent."
-
Terrible concept, with a boring bunch of characters. Cancel the fucker!
-
Paw Kent returns for a *Very Special Episode*
-
anyone who wants this show canceled is harboring ill feelings towards their mother.
-
Next.<p>It had some good ideas buried under some very bad execution and an overload of characters
-
So is Dr. Blondie Poutface.
-
I really have a difficult time being friends with people that buy DVDs for ST:Voyager or SG:A
-

honestly i dont like the women in this show so much
by DioxholsterReturns
SG-1 and SGA had more compelling female characters.
-
Elroy was supposed to be the audiences connection and most watchers can't stand him
-
deserves more attention, last episode proved that
-
... was great. <br> If they had one more episode on earth where they 'character build' for the most annoying characters I would have stopped watching. Not to mention the pacing has been all over the place, leading to me yawning in boredom at the climax of many episodes. <br> However, those Blue Aliens are freaking awesome, the action played out well, and for the first time ever I felt the pacing was perfect. I didn't yawn once.<br> Those saying that this show is 'SG Battlestar' have, until this point, been wrong. For all it's character building, Battlestar had a strong action beat. SG:U seems to have finally realised that this is the missing ingredient.<br> Hopefully, though, this episode isn't a once-off and they can keep the momentum up.
-
How can you not like Atlantis? I don't get it. I missed the original runs of SG-1 and Atlantis so I watch them daily on Space and they're both fucking awesome. Meanwhile, this shit. I haven't seen an episode of BSG in my life and even I knew what they were trying to be. And then Channing Tatum Jr. bangs that dumb click against a locker and I'm all WHAT THE FUCK? This isn't Stargate. Why would Richard Dean Anderson do this shit when he considers SG-1 a family show? Then fucking La Bamba is trading places with a dude banging a chick? Thanks but I'd rather see Ronon in a bloody fight with the Iron Chef chairman or Rodney McKay verbally fuck someone.
-
And she should kill all these fuckers while pregnant like she did Danny Trejo's cannibals.
-
Give me a plot! Make something happen!
-
1000 times, I'm pretty bored with it now. It's like Palin jokes, way too easy. Hey! Look, it's the woods in Canada again. What is it those aliens are living in? The same huts as those other aliens.. and lots of badly cut burlap clothing. Wow, there is synergy in the universe!!<br><br> But this show.. Universe? Loving it more every episode. I'm hooked now and yes, those aliens were a great payoff to a slow build of "will they run into aliens or not" tension. <br><br> I give Atlantis a lot of shit, but I gotta admit there were some pretty damned fine actors in that show <br>(other than the lead, who always reminded me of those DJs in the 90s with the tussled hair and a wit they thought was much sharper than it really was)<br> and it maybe doesn't deserve ALL the shit I give it. This show, however, is far superior in every way.
-
Better then a dark ship.
-
Never have them end up on a forest planet with a "peaceful, harmonic people, living at one with nature threatened with some big evil bad guy who wants to drain their *lifeforce* or something to power their ultimate weapon" living in huts and wearing burlap clothing. And NO FOREHEAD RIDGES! It looks like someone shoved a sex toy up through the bridges of their noses. As long as this show doesn't jump those particular sharks, I think it has a great future.
-
You got a point with the "dark ship" thing. But let's take that a step further and say thank goodness it doesn't look like the inside of an Apple store.
-
or is it just me?
-
i never seen one quite like this dude, not in sci fi anyway.
-
to post on here anymore, but whatever happened to that Lockesbrokenleg guy?
-
He died like last year dude.
-
Please, it turned cheesy in episode 1 and stayed that way. Say what you will about SGU but at least the "darker" feel they've ripped from BSG has helped in making it feel less cheesy.
-
In fact, it was the first episode of the show that I cared for so far. It seems like the producers are listening. And agreed on the smokingness of blonde doctor. I'm not even normally into blondes, maybe it's the neckline thing. Usually, you only get that on chick with boyish haircuts. Mmmm, I've be coming up with all sorts of bullshit illnesses to be getting down with her.
-
...a pregnancy-fuck. Seriously, she was, like, six or seven months knocked up when they wrapped the first season, though they seem to be hiding it pretty well at the moment.<p> Still, yeah -- give us some more of Sgt. Sugartits, please, show producers. Me likey.<p> (Also, that one widower guy last episode is clearly gayer than a leather pinata for turning that action down.)
-
But makes sense. I don't pursue pregnant women, but they do usually catch my eye, even before I realize they got one in the oven.
-
Could he be anymore fucking annoying? His character is fucking lame, stupid, pandering, unoriginal, and annoying. Kill him off and you have a fairly compelling show.
-
who sleeps around to relieve stress can stay too. Her Indian name is "Fucks With Bra On"
-
Except for Rush because Robert Carlye is awesome. So I have named them as follows:<P> Adama Light<P> "Apollo Light" or "Catholic Guilt Boy" or "Gets Gets More Ass than a Toilet Seat But Feels Guilty About It Boy"<P> Blonde I'm A Med Tech But I Play a Doctor on TV<P> Senator's Daughter<P> Sgt. Chesty McBoobs (I think your right she is a Sargent)<P> Angry Black Guy or Sargent Hatred (Stole Sargent Hatred from someone over at Television Without Pity)<P>
-
Johna Hill Clone
-
Think about it, if SG1 and SGA took their secondary and recurring characters and put them in the opening credits with the others, would anyone be able to remember all of their names? That's pretty much what SGU is doing.
-
The Princess<p> Eli = Elroy<p> Rush = 5'2" guy weighs 87 lbs, his head weighs 75 of those lbs<p> Angry Black Guy(tm) = Angry Black Guy(tm)
-
And another great episode... so realistic compared to 90% of TV today.
-
Why didn't Ely or the Colonel reveal their proof of Rush hiding the gun after the suicide? Might change some minds about Rush and the Colonel.
