Marvel Tracks Down A Director For Brian K. Vaughan's RUNAWAYS!

Beaks here...

As one of the few people I know who really, really liked NICK AND NORA'S INFINITE PLAYLIST, I've no problem with Marvel Studios going to director Peter Sollett for the big-screen adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona's RUNAWAYS. Given his talent for coaxing natural performances out of young actors (particularly in the wonderful RAISING VICTOR VARGAS - ninety-five on my Top 100 of the last decade), I honestly think hiring Sollett could be something of a coup. In case you've never read it, the comic revolves around a group of six teenagers who, upon learning their parents are part of a nefarious organization called The Pride, decide to use their specific powers/talents for good. It was reported a while back that Vaughan was writing the screenplay himself, but there's no word in today's Michael Fleming story at Deadline Hollywood as to whether this is still the case. Sollett may not be the sexiest name out there, but I'd much rather they take a chance on a gifted director who thinks character first than a capable hack who'll get the film to the finish line with a minimum of fuss (Devin at CHUD is surprised the studio isn't talking to Joss Whedon, who wrote on the comic for a while, and is evidently in the running for Marvel's THE AVENGERS; he'd be interesting, too). Considering the quality of the source material, this has the potential to be something special. If you're worried about the action, I'm sure Sollett will have plenty of help from whichever experienced second-unit team Marvel brings on. Sollett is still in negotiations, so there's time for you to make your voice heard in talkback. I'm pretty sure Marvel's listening.
