Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. You know, I've caught a lot of shit for disliking DIARY OF THE DEAD. I love George Romero to death, have most of his films on DVD and Blu-Ray, but even his most die-hard fans have to admit that Diary sucked at least a little bit. I can still like the dude as a filmmaker even if he's made a bad flick and, let's be honest, Diary wasn't Romero's first stumble... anybody that has seen the nearly unwatchable hippie dreck Season of the Witch can attest to that.
But he's always swinging for the fences. When you do that you're gonna strike out, but when it connects it's going to be something special.
I saw his Diary follow-up, Survival of the Dead, at Fantastic Fest last year and I can state it's a step up from Diary... maybe not Romero at his best, but at least he tried to make a real movie again and his budget limitations weren't as apparent as they were in Diary. In an ideal world Survival would mark an upswing in his later career and he still gives us one more Night or Dawn-level masterpiece. I believe in the dude.
Survival has its problems, but it also has some really interesting shit going on... You can see some of it in the red band trailer, which IGN debuted, complete with a shout-out from the man himself at the beginning of the video! Check it out:
