Darth Siskel takes us on our first look at SLEEPY HOLLOW!!! And says that 'THIS MOVIE F*CKING ROCKED!'
Well, hell's bells and nimble elves, I'm friggin jonzed to see this film as in NOW! For quite some time now, us, the secret league of Tim Burton Lovers (folks like me, Moriarty, Frankenseus, etc) have been waiting with baited breath to hear the word on SLEEPY HOLLOW... the film. We have known that the script was great, that Tim Burton was great, that the cast was great, that his DP was his best yet, that Danny Elfman rocks, that ILM rocks and that we were assured that the movie itself would rock. But this review goes past expectations of any mere ordinary rocking. "THIS FILM FUCKING ROCKS!" is the level of rocking that this film is allegedly set at. I'm dying. I SOooooooo want to see this film kick our collective arses. With the year of horror being as strong as it has been... Having seen END OF DAYS and knowing that that film is a pretty damn good film in it's own right... Well, I wante and needed to hear about SLEEPY HOLLOW as a film print. I am... so pleased right now. Heh. Here's long time AICN=er... Darth Siskel to give you the mostly Spoiler-freeish review, nothing major is revealed at all that could ruin the movie. I mean... you did know the Headless Horseman cuts off heads right? Good, here's Darth...

Darth Siskel here.
I'm proud to say, I've just returned from New Jersey!
Why was I in 'the Toxic-Waste State' ? I was there to see one of the
most anticipated movies of 1999.
Yes, I got to see Tim Burton's latest before anyone else in the world!
(including that evil bastard Moriarty!)
SLEEPY HOLLOW!!!
I am a Tim Burton fan. I love all of his movies, except for Batman
Returns.(It was half good).
PeeWee's Big Adventure, classic. BeetleJuice, classic. Edward
Scissorhands, another classic.
Ed Wood, classic. Mars Attacks, I understood it and I love it long
time. When I heard he was doing Sleepy Hollow,
I didn't need to see any posters, or trailers, I knew I had something to
look foward to. The material seemed more than perfect for him, & vice
versa.
WOW! I thought okay, this is going to be good. We're going to see some
great visuals...the sweetest of eye candy..
another classic. I was not prepared however for the power of THE
HEADLESS HORSEMAN!!
I'll try to be as 'Spoiler free' as possible..
THIS MOVIE FUCKING ROCKED!!!
Ray Park played the Headless Horseman, & he just gave us more of that
Darth Maul magic. This guy is good.
He knows how to move with a sword & it really shows. By getting a
martial artist to play the role, they brought the
Horseman to the highest level of believability achievable. Watching the
movie, this was not some guy in a costume. This was a full-on badass
spirit of vengeance!! I would not want to walk the woods in the next
county with this guy around!
THIS MOVIE IS RATED 'R' !
There is no way in hell this movie is getting a PG-13. It was graphic.
We get to see EVERY decapitation!! And I mean
we get to see 'cuts free' decapitations! ILM has their hands in this
movie. There are some shots in this movie that will make you mourn the
actors that lost their heads. You gotta love digital compositing! There
was some really good dummy head work done too.
THE MOVIE IS ABOUT Ichabod Crane trying to solve the town's recent rash
of beheadings.
At the end of the movie, when the mystery of the horseman is cleared up,
you might think it's silly. I thought it was
pretty good.. The movie has a pretty serious tone for the most part,
with some nice humor sprinkeled throughout, & a few odd moments that
seemed slightly out of place. The rest of the movie is just glorious.
THE CAST WAS GREAT!
Johnny Depp was a great Ichabod Crane. Cristina Ricci was very good.
Burton fans will see alot of familiar faces including
Lisa Marie, Christopher Walken, Martin Landau, & that guy from
BeetleJuice. Oh yeah, Palpatine is in it too! He's good,
but man all I can think of when I see him is.... Palpatine!! Depp had a
great accent. They all had great accents. Walken's part was pretty
small, but he made a terrific Headed Horseman.
VISUALLY BEAUTIFUL. This movie was so beautiful. They really pulled off
1799 New York. Ichabod's ride
up along the Hudsen River to Sleepy Hollow is amazing to look at. The
town of Sleepy Hollow itself is just.....wow.
Wonderful lighting & texture all throughout. The dark woods, the fog,
creepy. This movie was a fairytale brought to life. And nothing really
looked CG'd. The costumes were just as remarkable. I really like the
Horseman's getup. Too bad the movie won't be out until after Halloween.
Burton did an overall great job with the camera, & the storytelling. I
was not expecting as much action as there was. Whenever the Horseman
shows up, which is often (Thank you!!), he just
shows us his badass moves. I can't say anymore...
Thank you for not making a tame movie about people getting their heads
cut off! Thank you for doing it right.
When the first decapitation happened in the movie, a woman behind me
said "This is disgusting."
Seeing a fable brought to life with such fierceness was the most
beautiful thing I've seen in awhile.
The poster says "HEADS WILL ROLL!"
They weren't lying folks. This movie delivers!

Thanks for the Review, until now I did not know Ray Park was in this. For me this is a great thing to look forward too. Hopefully this film will gives us more time to enjoy Parks moves without the director killing him off too soon. oh ya, Jar Jar sucks. Dam it is hard to type when your body is covered in KY jelly!!!!
-
Anybody out there know when the U.K. release date is ?
Please.........not Christmas !!! -
I too am a lover of Tim Burton, and was overjoyed when I heard that he was doing Sleepy Hollow. Finally, doing a horror film. I supect that guy from Beetlejuice that Darth Siskel is speaking about is Jeffrey Jones. He also played the psychic Criswell in Ed Wood. As for the effects, I hope they were good. We just got The Mummy here, and some of the effects were appalling. Too many people working on Star Wars? Hopefully Sleepy Hollow managed to get in after SW was finished, so the effects really are up to scratch. ***** www.homestead.com/vertigofilms/

I live in NJ and we're not just gas refineries and airports...
-
Ray's character can't be killed off so easily this time since he's apparently already missing body parts to begin with =) Looking forward to his third faceless role in X-Men!
-
There is a trailer for this attached to Stigmata, Well Stigmata sucked, but the trailer for Sleepy Hollow Rocks,
http://www.auroramediaworks.com/cinemaedge/trailers/sleepy.mov
Yum, Yum Yum

Yeeeeeaaaah! I KNEW this would rock from the first moment I heard it was going into production. Lets thank the movie gods that Burton so quickly ditched SUPERMAN to do this project. And so what if it's not totally faithful to the original story? Its not history we're butchering here (like our friends at Disney like to do)- its merely a story (that has been adapted faithfully a few times...so thats not really a problem). Can't wait for opening night! (as long as it doesn't interfere with the DOGMA premiere)
-
Even though it's not exactly a planned out act of defiance, the fall movie sked is sure to rankle these knee-jerk jackasses like Roseanne singing "The Star Spangled Banner" in their living rooms. As for Timmy, while I love some of his work, he usually frustrates me by delivering one near classic after another. For my money, he's hit the bull's eye twice: PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, and ED WOOD. By far, the biggest letdown in his oeuvre is EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. It looks and feels like a classic, but the storytelling simply leaves me cold. And that's my main caveat with most of his work. Hopefully, with Tom Stoppard on board as script doctor, he'll finally deliver his masterpiece. A question for Darth Siskel: do you think SLEEPY HOLLOW is Oscar worthy?
-
Of production design, maybe. Ask yourselves a question: were any of the 'Batman' movies actually good? At best, they were sporadically entertaining. I'm talking of the first two, lets not go near the last two. The 'Batman' movies are all about marketing and hype, nothing more, nothing less. They were all visually impressive, but empty, for the most part, with meandering plots; the first two tried to be deep, at least, but any attempt at meaning got lost in the visuals. Even Tim Burton - who I like, so put away the flamethrowers - said that 'Batman' was "kind of boring." As for Ray Park, his name will be in the news shortly, and not in a good way: when he shows up in Toronto to start filming 'X-men', he will be presented with a lawsuit. It seems our dear friend Mister Park reneged on an agreement to appear at a fan convention. His agent feels that this sort of thing will hurt his client's career. I'm sure that the fans will be disappointed, but at least Park won't be able to charge the kiddies $35 for his autograph, like he was doing in Britain.
-
And this is a good thing? OK, I guess everyone has their own tastes, I don't want to see gore - especially in this legend. The horror isn't in the gore - if anything graphic depiction detracts from it (for me) because I just instinctively tune out everything from that point on. *strikes movie off list* :(
-
Am I the only one who thought this movie was gonna suck to begin with? I never have and never will understand why these fan-geeks go ga-ga over some of these movies. And btw, New Jersey DOES SUCK!
-
You may not want to read this if everything has to be a surprise to you, but I won't give away any major plot elements...
While I can't vouch for what Darth Siskel did see, I was part of the lucky audience who saw Burton's amazing SLEEPY HOLLOW in lovely Wayne, NJ. I am not the hugest Burton fan, but this movie was really really good. Even though the version we saw was so rough(out of focus 5% of the time, special effects were not all completed, rough editing)you could still appreciate how amazing this is going to be when it is completed. Johnny Depp outdoes himself as Ichabod, who manages to be funny, serious, terrified all in about 30 secs worth of screen time. Christopher Walken as the Headed Horseman was amazing, I was scared shitless in any scene he was in (not too many so enjoy them!). Great performances all around, I even bought Christina Ricci as a blond. I don't know how to prove to anyone that I actually did see the movie, any spoilers given might actually be changed by the time the actual release date is set. The ending could be edited to completely change the whole feel, in fact my friend and I thought it was over at one point (and we were severely disappointed)until we realized it was still going. The final climax could use a little polishing, which I hope it will get before it's premiere.
There are a lot of elements that a lot of Burton fans will love, scarecrows that resemble Jack from NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS, dream sequences with Elfman's so familiar "ahhh-ahhh" music and all your favorite regulars. There is the amazing scene where Ichabod discovers the resting ground of the horseman, and all I will say is that it involves a bleeding tree and a lot of heads. But right after there is a scene where Ichabod is trying to piece together the mystery of the Horseman (yes there is a definite Scooby Doo thing going on)where Burton lets the audience in on it, while Crane is still clueless. That's how the whole movie is, freak you out decapitation scene followed by laugh at idiot Crane, townspeople etc. All in all exceptionally well done!
Even my fellow NJ'ers laughed at all the right times, and despite the poor visual quality of the film still applauded the ending. On a final note there were some small children in my screening that seemed really freaked-THIS IS NO KIDS MOVIE! There are at least 6 decapitation scenes, nothing left to the imagination. There is plenty of violence, including one character who gets sliced completely in half. But I still reccomend it to anyone with a strong stomach. Excellent film!
-
I don't feel any need to include spoilers in a review. I wrote it the same way I'd talk to my friends about a movie they hadn't seen yet. If I see something I really like, I'll praise it & tell them why it was good, because of the visuals, or the action, story, or whatever. Summarizing the plot, or explaining every scene is not a review, & most people I know like a movie to be fresh when they see it for the first time. Nowadays most trailers do enough to spoil a movie, I don't want to contribute to that.
Mr.Beaks, is this movie Oscar worthy? Not this year. It's a great movie, but it's not perfect, & not better than American Beauty or Iron Giant, two perfect movies in my eyes. Visually it was great, so for design awards it might give Ep1 a little competition. -
I forgot, Tim & Danny were there.
I chatted a sec with Tim. He was signing autographs & answering people's questions & being really nice to people. Everyone was saying they loved the flick, & he was very thankful for their praise. He said the decapitations were accomplished in several ways, sometimes using digital effects, other times using other techniques. I gotta say, each decapitation in this movie is done in a different way than the last.
Do not mess with the Horseman. -
I've seen the trailer for this film and it looks to be a loose but stylish interpretation of the legend of sleepy hollow. Icabod Crane was a teacher who got his head lopped off in the story but is some sort of detective from the big city that cracks the case in this one. In my opinion, it's a major stretch that needs to be treated as a comic book.
As far as pre-judging films - if you enjoy going to the movies alot it become very easy to tell whether you will like a film from the poster alone. Add the trailer and spoilers and you have even more info to make a decision. This also slants your view before you see the actual productin it's totality...so if you are really looking forward to a movie it might be good to stay away from all hype, reviews, spoilers, trailers, etc.
Compared to the generic crap that is churned out today, Sleepy Hollow looks to be higher calibre action entertainment then say Wild Wild West or The Matrix. It's not only visually stunning and truely legend but unlike most stylists directing films these days Burton knows there is a line where it all becomes too much. Bigger stunts, landscapes, effects, and explosions just serve to batter the audience into approval without improving the story telling. See new star wars for a good example of not respecting the line. -
Burton is most definately not a hack. He is one of the true 'artists' in modern cinema.
I won't go into great detail about every Burton film, but for every single one, their strengths far outway their weaknesses.
The point about Burton 'butchering' a piece of classic literature is absolute crap. It is Kevin Williamson's script (it was him wasn't it?) that makes the changes to the original legend, not Burton. I don't think anyone wants to disagree with the man that wrote Se7en (anybody?)
Also, can anyone elaborate on Danny Elfman's score?
I have no doubt that Sleepy will be a good movie. You guys should be happy that you get to see it in November. Being in the UK, we will have to wait (yet again).

The good news is, it's directed by Tim Burton. The bad news is.
by jimmer72
ED WOOD was his masterpiece, BATMAN RETURNS is, repeat IS, the best of the series, but after that, what have you got? Although my hopes are high because of all the talent involved, I have to say that Mr. All-Dressed-in-Black is a strong VISUAL storyteller, but in terms of plot and characterization, he usually botches it. OK, he doesn't write his movies, but most of the pacing and direction is all wrong--look at the first BATMAN and MARS ATTACKS! (which was one of the biggest wastes of talent until PHANTOM MENACE came along). Just the fact that SLEEPY HOLLOW has Walken in it makes me happy, but I will be more than a little surprised if it's really that damn good. (I also liked the first PEE-WEE. It was cute.)

Oh thank God! finally, a movie that takes decapitation seriously
by caligari
I for one hope the decapitations aren't too graphic. An audience's imagination is more powerful than a straight-forward bloody special effect. Remember "Resevoir Dogs?" Tarintino shot the police officer getting his ear hacked off. It was bloody and shocking... and the audience was revolted. However, Tarintino discovered by moving the camera away--so the ear chopping happens off screen--the policeman's screams created an terrifying image in the Audience's minds' eye. Leave the cut-rate slice and dice mentality for the direct to video horror crap.
-
Please don't use the words Batman returns and masterpiece in the same sentence. I didnt like it because it was stupid and boring , nothing to do with Michelle or Danny. Hell "Batman & Robin" was even better (yes i'm serious).
-
Ok, this IS old but if anyone wants to see a flawless mix of humor and horror should check "Go To The Head Of The Class"...a one hour Amazing Stories episode from over 10 years ago directed by Bob Zemekis. This is probably one of the best of the Amazing Stories episodes(tied w/Family Dog and the Amazing Farnsworth for my 2 bits).I only mention this because this is the first thing that popped in my head when you talked about "Sleepy Hollow".The horror/comedy is a difficult genre at best(especially, with the void left by Vincent Price)and I can only hope the movie can live up to expectations. Also,I can't agree w/ the Batman sentiment being any kind of triumph except for the late Anton Furst who was the real design genius behind Batman. Finally, thank GOD Burton is staying with ILM, his previous films really suffered from the poorly scaled models and cheesy matte paintings. And in closing, it occurred to me how much I'd rather see Christopher Lloyd in Sleepy Hollow then Christopher Walken doing the Christopher Walken thing...AGAIN.Oh and to the flame boys, yes I know Mr. Lloyd is currently booked doing phone commercials w/ the equally talented David Arquette.

That's the link, follow it. Sleepy Hollow will be listed second to X-Men (his role there being Toad).
For a dude who only has four movies to his credit, I like his taste so far. :) Can't wait to see Sleepy Hollow, though it's not necessarily because of him, ya know. WooHOO! Bring it on! I want th'decapitation movie! yeah!yeaH!yeAh! laKe pLacid whet my appetite:) There isn't anyone that would be more appropriate to direct it than Burton. Elfman was a must, as is Depp. Walken is bonus, kinda like he was in Mousetrap. :) He made that movie worth the rental fee. Ricci and Depp, I'm anxious to see actually work together. I don't count Fear and Loathing cuz they mostly just stared at each other - like there's some ethreal element at play that stuns them into just staring mostly. Mostly... -
Jelloboy,
not only are you apparently only capable of spreading bad vibes and never-ending negativity, you are obviously also a racist, judging from your comments about Italians and Jews. All I have to say is that instant Karma is gonna get you!
Now to change the subject, reviews can only be subjective and reflect the reviewers personal opinion - nothing more nothing less. I basically don't care if Mr. Darth Siskel did or did not see Sleepy Hollow, but I'm sure he did, and if he thought the movie rocked, then peace be with him.
I know that I will love Sleepy Hollow for two very simple reasons: it's a Tim Burton movie, and more importantly, Johnny Depp is in it. That's all I need to know. I have tremendous respect for these two people, and nothing anybody says can ruin my feeling of complete JOY to see them working together once again.
Peace be with you all! -
Sleepy Hollow sounds good. In response to Jobriga 1, I was under the impression that Casper VanDien was going to play Brom Bones. In response to maxwell demon, where the fuck do you get off? If there's something that really gets to me, it's people who post 1,000 word diatribes condemning regulars of this site as fanboy losers. If you're so much cooler than everyone else, maxwell, what are you doing wasting your time here?
And how do you go from defending Batman Returns to telling Ray Park fans they "deserved Columbine"? You sound like a jealous, deeply bitter, sexually frustrated prick
to me, max. -
I usually don't enter or read talkbacks simply because the conversation in here usually degenerates into personal attacks by one user or another.
I simply don't understand why people can't come in here and conduct a half decent conversation about the pertinent subject. I was reading through some talk backs recently on this movie review and some other things last night and this morning, and what I found was utterly disgusting.
People like "Jelloboy" post meaningless drivel about how their state "kicks ass" and then launch into attacks about anyone who criticizes them.
Who cares???????
Who cares if someone else out there doesn't like your state? What has THAT got to do with Sleepy Hollow?
If people don't like tim burton's movies, then the solution is VERY simple. Don't watch them.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but it's a shame that things must degenerate so badly. Finally, what disappoints me the most is the individual who calls himself: "HARRY IS STUPID". I've read some of the personal attacks he's made against Harry Knowles, and personally, I'm amazed that Harry puts up with it. He's done all of us, that's right ALL of us a tremendous service by providing a website we can visit, which is FREE and is entertaining. It's really too bad that some people out there can't appreciate that. If you don't like Harry or his website, then might I suggest you find somewhere else to post your crap and your criticisms.
THIS is why I don't go through talkbacks, and I'll bet there are many many others who feel the same way. It's really too bad that some ignorant individuals have to take something that is supposed to be fun and enjoyable and ruin it for others.
In my humble opinion, that's just plain pathetic.
Personally, I can't wait to see the movie and I am grateful to Harry for posting the information for all of us to read.
Thanks Harry!
-
(First off I apologize for that extra post, my bad)
Anyways, jelloboy, your powers of deduction, as with most of the people I see on the Internet, are horribly wrong! I am, in fact, not from New York. I was actually BORN there! Yeah! And I hate admitting it to ANYONE CAUSE THAT PLACE IS A HELLHOLE! Everytime, I have to visit a relative there, I suffer mental anguish. That place is so ugly, and the people are incredibly digusting. What a bunch of scumbags they are. There might be a few exceptions, but I will NEVER go back to that wretched place. Now, if you want to guess where I live again, be my guest, cause you'll probably get it wrong - again! BTW, I do NOT like any of Tim Burton's movies. I think every Batman sucked, didn't like Pee Wee Herman, and I hate that goth stuff. -
I have to agree with Brimley's sentiment that God should be thanked that Burton is no longer involved with SUPERMAN. He only would have destroyed the character with his cookie-cutter goth "vision." Hopefully Donner will get to take over that film. As for SLEEPY HOLLOW, I'll skip it. While most other directors show a capacity for evolving and improving their skills (Spielberg, Howard, Nicholas Meyer, Cameron, Donner, McTiernan, and David Fincher, to name a few), Burton hasn't evolved at all over the years. All of his films are almost exactly the same; if you've seen one, you've seen them all. And the man still has no grasp of plot of pacing or characterization. I really have no interest in seeing his mockery of Washington Irving.
-
Hey, there are some of us who want to go in fresh to the movie. We like hearing how the movie was made, what the plot generally is (without giving away suprises and endings) and if it's worth the expense or time to watch. I'm all for people posting reviews that have spoilers in them as long as there is a warning like SPOILER ALERT! written above the spoiler stuff. Yeah, I can usually tell when I am not going to like a movie, too, but sometimes I want to be surprised on just how bad it is. ; ) BTW, I trust Darth Siskel because every time I read something of his it is intelligent and thought out.
-
Um...these boards have been messed up lately, posting new messages on top, then back on bottom. It gets confusing. What's going on with the TalkBack, Harry?
-
Remember that scene in Clerks where Randall and Dante are discussing a guy (Randall's uncle?) who died trying to suck his own dick? Well Kevin Smith based that story on a true story about a guy who broke his neck (but didn't die) trying to suck his own dick. And that unfortunate guy, who I knew when I lived in Jersey, is now known as "jelloboy". So, although he puts off a lot of negative vibes and is kind of a jerk, you should have some sympathy for the guy.
-
Because it seems that ever movie that hasn't even been released yet gets picked apart or bashed or both. Believe me some of you people need to take it easy and start enjoying movies again instead of worrying about every single detail and inconsistency. I thought Batman was good. So what it wasn't a direct translation, but I enjoyed it. Hell I enjoyed every one of them because it had Batman in it. I thought Clooney was good, but he just had a lousy script. Anyways "Sleepy Hollow" looks to be good, along with "End of Days" and its good to see movies like these that are willing to take chances.
-
Just because IMDb has someone listed in a film does not mean it is correct. Any fanboy with an e-mail address can put himself in any movie in production that he wants. There are several cyber freaks who have added themselves to dozens. He can also make himself, or anyone he wants, the star, simply by submitting the name and credit order. You will also note that IMDb lists Sleepy Hollow as "filming." Sounds to me like it is in the late stages of post production. If it is filming, or still in post, then how can there be credits listed in credits order? There can't be until the film is finished and a print is available for viewing. The credits listed for the film, and the order in which they allegedly appear cannot be the final credits until the film is finally completed and released. Only when the film is released will the IMDb be able to gather the correct credits and have them verified. Until then it is all fanboys on parade. Just check the IMDb listing for virtually any movie in production. Every local day player and extra lists themselves with their production board number as the credit order, which makes them look like the star, while the real stars float around in alphabetical order until the film is finished and the actual credits determined.

All of your personal slanderings are pointless and tacky. Get off each other's backs and talk about the topic at hand!
-
i thought i would never see the day when yet a another form of bigotry would arise, even among us so called enlightened pop culturists. its the kind of seperation that states that if someone doesn't like something that another likes, that person is a fool and an idiot. this sickens me. we are allowed to like whatever we want, regardless of what others say. it just a movie for crying out loud, if you don't like it, don't go see it, and don't ruin the experience for others. harry and i are a lot alike, methinks, we like everything, not as a whole, but for its parts. that brings us a lot of naysaying, but who cares, we are entitled to our opinion, regardless. if you don't like the reviews or the lack of info therein, why are you here?
and to maxwell:
HOW DARE YOU!!!!! how dare you throw around the columbine incident like it was a tea party accident! people were KILLED there, it really happened, it wasn't some movie of the week on tv you evil asshole! i pray to god your not as bad as you sound because if you are, i will be more than happy to take you out myself
-
Is the Beetlejuice guy from the Howard Stern show gonna be in this?
-
I don't get why you few people think that Tim Burton ruined Batman. If anything, he should have made it even darker. The first two were closer to Arkham Asylum than that lame outdated comic book series. Schmacher is the one who ruined the series. As far as Burtons evolution as a filmaker, there is a huge difference in skill from one film to the next. Ed Wood and Nightmare before Christmas were his best films so far and I am looking forward to this one more than any other one of his before now. This year is gonna finish off great in the theatres starting with The fight Club (and maybe the straight story) on the 15th of October, then possibly being John Malkovich on the 29th, then Messenger November 5th, then Dogma the 12th, then Sleepy Hollow the 19th, then End of Days and possibly Toy Story 2 on the 24th, then Fantasia 2000 and the Green Mile on December 17th and finally MAN ON THE MOON!! on the 25th. Even if I am disappointed half the time, I will be a happy filmgoer. Oh yeah 'F' KingKrypton, 005, jelloboy and Maxwell Demon and lest I forget, Gilmour you must be high.
-
Hey all. I grew up in Sleepy Hollow, went to Sleepy Hollow High School, and even played for our football team, the "Headless Horsemen" (I know it's cheesy) :)
Anyway, I'm just wondering why the hell none of this movie was filmed here? I mean, a lot of the things from the legend are still around. The Old Dutch Church, or the covered bridge still stand for example. I just think it'd be neat to have some of the original elements that inspired Washington Irving in the actual movie, it's not like they still don't look cool, and there's plenty of woods around the bridge at least. Oh well...should be cool anyway, and I assure you all, ole headless is real...seen him myself! -
I have no idea where on the board this message will end up - messages seem to be posted in random order, and I apologize if anyone already said this.
Casper Van Dien plays Brom Van Brunt ( = Brom Bones??? ), and I understand that he is the character who competes with Ichabod Crane for the affections of the girl ( Ricci ).
I am not familiar with Irving's story ( not part of the curriculum in Denmark - sorry ), but I have heard of a German fable which alledgedly "inspired" Irving to write the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Everyone gets their inspiration from somewhere, and if Irving's story "inspired" Burton et al to do a slightly different twist on this old fable, then fine with me. I'm completely cool with the fact that this is Burton's way of telling the story, and the same goes for Batman. Sacred texts like the Bible get re-interpreted every day all over the world, and if your personal "Bible" happens to be the Batman comic books or Washington Irving's story then I can understand why you would take other interpretations so hard, but, ultimately, it's all fiction that goes through endless re-tellings in order to make whatever point about life you want to make. And that's a good thing, in my opinion. -
DOES NO ONE LISTEN TO ME?
BURTON DID NOT CHANGE THE LEGEND, THE WRITER DID (KEVIN WALKER). IT IS WALKER WHO MADE ICHABOD CRANE A DETECTIVE AND NOT A SCHOOL TEACHER, NOT BURTON.
Sorry about the caps, but obviously nobody actually reads anything on these crappy 'talkback' things. -
Hardly anybody who ever wrote a talkback to this website had a good word to say about TPM.......yet because there's a rumour going around that the stuntman who played Darth Maul MAY be in this film.....it's enough to make several of you soil your panties in anticipation !
What gives ?
He'd only have a minor role at best, and that depends on his acting ability. It's easy to act scarey when your hace is painted red and black and someone glued horns to your head.
So why all the fuss ?
Why not check out an actor/stuntman who delivers the goods each and every time instead.......go check out Kane Hodder ! -

Tim IS The Furthest Thing From Hack, But He's Not All Good
by grouchlord
As for the inevitiable Morons citing media violence as the cause of Colombine, et al, I'm sure these fellows watched Sesame Street as kids, let's talk about how that warps people. Let's ban Sesame Street for providing an unrealistic world veiw! Ha! People always freak out over the assholes that go awry, that's a given, but why do they always have to link up their personal agenda to it. In Ft.Worth, some dunderheads were on the television likening the Killer to the Colombine killers immediately after the tragedy, and SHOCKINGLY we later learn he was not a GOTH rocker at all, just a pathetic man with a sick brain. It happens! The brain is an organ not a soul... If you feel the movies are taking us to hell, you're on a old train to nowhere. WHY do people act as if these atrocities NEVER happened before movies, music, or goth chic? Hell, they did this report on a guy who dynamited a school back in like the 30's or something? Agh,end of rant. Tim Burton is the furthest thing from hack that I can imagine. True, he often sucks, but that's the price you pay for his cool stuff.

This is such an appropriate forum to discuss the bloody personal attacks and intolerance of certain posters to this site. Tim Burton's films have always had a common link... an 'outsider', a 'square peg', someone who is a little (or a lot) different from the norm, who just wants to be accepted as is. He doesn't want everybody to think like him or be like him or look like him, he just wants to accept others and be accepted in return. His message seems to be lost on too many people, who hate everybody and everything that isn't in accord with their view of the world. Fuck, everybody says they want to be individuals, they want to be unique, but they're ready to shoot down anyone or anything that isn't just like themselves or as they want things to be. What a bunch of losers!

For the record, your fishing hook is 'baited' while your breath is 'bated'--unless of course you've been snacking on the nightcrawlers :)

You are the man Dave. But of course the only people who get your point are the ones who already knew that so you are preaching to the choir. In this world the misfits and the artistic will always be seen as freaks and degenerates who are wasting their time. If you can relate to what Burton does, fuck the rest of the dickheads.

Okay, this whole NY vs. NJ thing is kinda moronic isnt it? I mean who the hell really cares? Does it matter? No. My mom is from NY, my aunt is from NJ. So what? How did seeing Sleepy Hollow in NJ turn into a fight? Its pretty dumb. Anyway, this movie looks to be good and entertaining. Jelloboy, I respect your opinion and you make valid points, but let me remind you that the unoriginality is not because of Burton. A director's job is to interpret the script and how he/she would like to portray something to the viewer. Who could have made a better Batman? Why is it that Burton's two Batman films are given credit as the only good comic book films (read the talkbacks on the X-Men articles)? Why am I writing so many questions? Anyway, I don't think that people will complain too much about the descrepancies when they see the final project (how many people's only experience with Sleepy Hollow is the Disney cartoon? - which I always loved as a kid around Halloween time). I think we should all just relax and wait till the movie comes out before we pass judgement on it. But if you don't think it will be good, there's 3 things you can do. Go to a bargain matinee for $4-5, wait till it comes out on video or HBO, or just don't see it. Works for me. I for one, will be ready and waiting for it on November 19th.

PUDGE: Re: `Harry is stupid'; I'm actually surprised Harry allows that person to continue posting. You should try to read the TalkBacks within the first 5-8 posts. That is when the posts are about the topic, and there is no slandering; It's either `This movie will be good.' `I can't wait to see it.' Or `It will suck.' But the personal attacks won't start until someone feels like getting attention for being a moron. DHALGREN: Why, exactly, should anyone have to show sympathy for another persons stupidity? He broke his neck trying to `suck his own d**k'. That in itself is moronic, because anyone with any amount of sense wouldn't try it, let alone *want* to try it. Then again, I could assume you were being sarcastic, and you telling us to `show sympathy for him because he tried to suck his own d**k' was a hidden way of saying: `Pity this fool, he is a complete and utter idiot.' Yes, yes, I think I like the second part better. Then again, I still wouldn't show him sympathy. JELLOBOY: Ichabod was a teacher, not a cop. Casper Van Dien plays the part of Brom Bones. So, I guess that would mean Brom *is* in this.

Sleepy Hollow looks fantastic. I'm very curious to see what it will be like compared to the Disney movie that I loved as a kid. Anyway I just want to say that I love Batman Returns. Michelle Pfeiffer gave an AMAZING performance in that movie. Mars Attacks was a disappointment. Even Tim Burton said it didn't come out as he wanted it too. Anyway, if someone wants to see an amzing performance see Michelle in Batman Returns.

What i don't get is people go on about how much this movie will suck and then say they'll only lose $4 going to see it. If its gonna suck so much DONT GO SEE IT!
-
".. The movie has a pretty serious tone for the most part, with some nice humor sprinkeled throughout, & a few odd moments that seemed slightly out of place."
Gee, no kidding? A Tim Burton film with all the above in it. Like the Joker disco-dance through the art museum. Crap. You just described how he screwed up every Batman movie he did.

Jeez, lol so what if Batman wasn't the comic book on celluloid? It was a damn good movie, miles above most of the summer blockbuster trash we're fed these days. What next? You're going to complain that Vicky Vale's breasts were bigger than the comic book version? Heaven forbid a director inject his own vision and idea behind a story that's already been done to death. But alas, you're probably the biggest fool...you're actually paying $4 to see a movie from a person you consider to be a 'talentless goth hack' (or something to that extent). If you really feel that strongly against Burton just buy a clue and don't go see his movies. You might actually get laid sometime soon.
-
Tim Burton may, or may not be a `goth hack', but his movies are still enjoyable. `Ed Wood' was a pretty funny film, and if he's trying to do a straight-on horror film, then I will go see it. Maybe I'll enjoy it, and maybe I won't, but at least I'll be able to come back with a valid opinion of it `sucking' or `rocking' and won't sound, or look, like an idiot (and if that wasn't a run on sentence, wait until I get going.). And God forbid someone says a movie will/does suck and then gives a well thought out opinion as to why he/she disliked it.

Anyone who can write the sentence: "MARS ATTACKS, I *understood it* and I love it...(emphasis mine) is an idiot of the highest order and should be forever banned from reviewing movies.
I can't believe Darth Siskel has the gall to think that Mars Attacks was a movie that had to be 'understood' to be enjoyed.
Pull your head out, Darth Siskel. MARS ATTACKS *SUCKS*! There is nothing there that needs to be understood. It isn't an intellectual comedy that some people didn't 'get' (like RUSHMORE). It was simply a terrible movie that failed miserably on all levels.
That said, I do like most of Burton's other films.
