The fantastic Aussie Crime-Thriller and Sundance Favorite ANIMAL KINGDOM gets a trailer!

Published at:  Mar 26, 2010 1:40:09 AM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. One of the highlights of Sundance this year was this flick, Animal Kingdom. It's directed by David Michod, part of Nash Edgerton's group that also produced THE SQUARE and another Sundance hit (and one of my favorites of the year so far) HESHER. In fact, Michod wrote Hesher for I LOVE SARAH JANE's Spencer Susser.

I'm telling you, this group is putting out some of the best films out now. They all have a bizarre '70s feel to them, but don't feel like throwbacks or like they're nodding their heads so hard at that era of filmmaking that they almost roll off.

The flick's about a kid whose junkie mother ODs and he's forced to move in with this radically criminalized family. The detectives, led by Guy Pearce, trying to nail the head of the household (Ben Mendelsohn) naturally see this kid, newcomer James Frecheville, as their ticket to finally putting Mendelsohn behind bars. Take a look at the trailer:

Joel Edgerton is great in this flick... he's the one who has been tapped, quite smartly I might add, by Universal to headline their THING prequel/reboot/whatever. I also loved Jacki Weaver as the matriarch of the family... she looks like Harley Quinn's mom to me.

So, yes... See this movie when it opens near you. We'd be better off if movies like this made a bajillion dollars. Thanks again to for the embed!

Thanks Quint for keeping this Aussie living abroad in the loop. I have never even heard of this. Biggest question though is Peter Phelps in this? As it is not a true Oz movie unless it has Peter Phelps.

    Guy Pearce

    by bass ackwards

Seems like he's been taking a lot of smaller roles in interesting projects, such as this one (I'm assuming its a smaller role by the way he's credited as "And Guy Pearce"), Hurt Locker, The Road. Though he's got a lot of good looking projects on his 2010 plate (The Hungry Rabbit Jumps especially sounds interesting), be curious to see if he starts picking up some meatier roles or if he's just happy to lend his name and talents with these smaller roles.

I'm a sucker for all the Walsh St/Underbelly/Chopper type Melbourne crime stuff so I'll certainly be catching this.

I don't think living here would keep you in the loop up and coming aussie movies. We only hear about them 5 years after they were made and won prizes at some mysterious and exotic film festival far far away.

    Really nice guy

    by sonofmccorriston

David Michod that is. He did a Q @ A last week at my school and we got to see his two short films and this doco that he helped editted. His short films got him the funding he needed fo Animal Kingdom. Yet the best thing was that he was a approachable guy and really understood our position of students.

Another movie based on a Disney Park...great.

    by jimbojones123

Next up Disney's Main Street USA. A timeless tale from a 1920s small town where motor cars and horse drawn buggies coexist. Wait til you see the riviting Penny Arcade scene! It all ends with an ice cream cone and a smile that will last a lifetime.

    Disagree on Air Supply

    by gseif7

The trailer "kind of" had me going, until Air Supply came on, then I was too distracted by the song to pay attention to the trailer. I kept thinking, who though putting that song in the trailer was a good idea? It didn't work for me at all.
