The Sorcerer's Apprentice International trailer has more Molina, more Cage, more dragons and more plasma bolts!

Published at:  Mar 26, 2010 3:16:59 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Yes, I'm a little nuts for Nic Cage at the moment so maybe that's clouding my judgment a bit, but I'm actually kinda excited for THE SORCERER'S APPRENTICE.

Listen, it's a movie about Nicolas Cage as a wizard mentoring a geek to shoot plasma bolts and turn old cars into hot sexy cars... and fight dragons and deflect fire and stuff. With Alfred Molina, apparently born from a mass of bugs, as the bad guy.

I mean, come on. If you're going to do a big budget ridiculous action movie, I say go all out and that's exactly what Jerry Bruckheimer and Jon Turteltaub seem to have done.

Or maybe this stuff works better in 3 minute or less spurts of footage. Or maybe it's going to be awesome. Or maybe... maybe...

    Yes. Excited.

And it's nothing like Harry Potter. Not even a little bit. What, because it's got magic? HP has it's own mythology, setting and a massive cast of original characters. This looks nothing like any of that.

Too bad this is not a Dr Strange flick. I can see Cage as Stephen Strange, and Molina looks like Baron Mordo.

Jerks off in the face of the source material

    by daggor

The whole idea behind the classic is that a sorcerer isn't supposed to show off or otherwise abuse his power. And yes, they are attempting to create a franchise LIKE Harry Potter (not duplicate, my Asperger's-afflicted talkbackers). You know, ride the coattails... imitate the success of.

Harry Potter doens't compare to this

    by shub-wankalot

It's more like Doctor Strange brought to the screen, or even White Wolf's World of Darkness game, Mage: The Awakening. Even the flick of Clive Barker's Lord of Illusions covers similar territory, from another perspective. Hell, if tweak the rules a little even Constantine starring Keanu Reeves dips into the realm of conjurers and summoners.

I don't think the source material is relevant here

Obviously, other than sharing the title, this movie has nothing to do with Goethe's poem.

is the "It's not about good or evil, it's about power" line. But then, Joss Whedon had the First Evil say it in Buffy, so it seems to be becoming a standard villain cackle.

Kristen Stewart doesn't seem as "dead behind the eyes" as usual. She must be making a consious decision to suck in the twilight franchise because I like her in ANY other roll.

Of how many generic Potter-esque books are still out there un-optioned and then pool our money, buy the options and then let them ROT for 10 years? Jeebus on toast am I weary of this stuff and I love the whole sorcery thing but god I feel like if I watch one more teen hero falters then makes good cliche I'm going to projectile vomit golden sponge cake and creamy filling everywhere. Makes me want to put on a mesh sleeveless shirt, check out a late night matinee of the Expendables and start a fistfight in the parking lot for no good reason.

    by kevin_costners_recycled_piss

But it definately seems a bit generic. Wise old man tells young boy he has "special powers" trains him, cue appearance of the big evil guy, the wise mentor sacrifices himself and the boy defeates the bad guy, becomes a hero and gets the girl. Movie ends with the standard sequel setup.

Outside of the upcoming Kickass movie, Cage has really been pumping out nothing but trash over the last five or so years. Like most Fanboys I was a Cage supporter back in the day, but whatever good will he built up with me is long gone. Pass.

    by kayleefan

Cage was an executive producer of The Dresden Files for the Sci-Fi Channel. I can't imagine where he came up with the idea for this movie. Hmm, he's even dressed exactly as Dresden is portrayed in the books.

I find it funny that Disney's producers keep on insisting that this has NOTHING to do with the short in Fantasia... but if you look at the "A" in Apprentice, it has the 2 stars and the Moon just like Mickey's hat.

Now I have to say that I'm excited for this movie. I, for one, do not hate Nic Cage at all, and IMO, is actually a very talented actor. He's just been working in a lot of crappy movies in the last few years, but some like Lord of War, Bad Lieutenant and, to a certain extent, Knowing show that he still has the talent. And this movie overall just looks fun as hell. And with Alfred Molina as the main baddie? Now I know it'll at least have a good villain :)
