Worst Fucking News Ever! Paul WS Anderson to do BUCK ROGERS in 3D! ARGH!!!!
Hey folks, Harry here with some pretty horrendous and incredibly depressing news that will take some time to recover from. Now we know that PARADOX is a company that is spending some big money to get some pretty amazing properties. Right now they're making CONAN with a Baywatch guy and Marcus "I love orange" Nispel. Well know they're making BUCK ROGERS with Paul "Worthless Shit" Anderson. This is a director that has continually made shit at a scale that stinks for ages. And yet, I find myself still hoping that this director, whose films I continually dislike - and has only ever moderately distracted me... is now making one of my fave characters of the past... in 3D. Fuck. Seriously - you go with Paul W.S. Anderson? There's dozens of directors that I personally know - that given this property they would go head over heels making it. I'm sure Paul is excited, but he just isn't very fucking talented. He's a goddamn grade-school artist trying to make things for the Louvre. Fuck this news that Mike Fleming broke. Fuck this is sad.

Noooooo. Wait, who the fuck cares? Where are the DVD reviews Harry? Where?

Shit sucks.

The worst news is that Robert Culp passed away today! I need to watch my 'Greatest American Hero" DVDs now again.
-
Now you see the danger of typing the f-word in a subject line...
-
That is terrible. R.I.P.
-
It is sad indeed. It sounds like he had a heart attack.
-
So Harry- you don't like Paul W.S. Anderson? Or you kinda do? I'm just clarifying.. I need you to be a lil more up front with how you feel and not be around the bush... :P
-
box set yet. I guess today is a good day to do so. Truly sad, sad news.
-
I need to finish watching that last season. I was only a few episodes in before it was set aside.
-
They always come in 3s: Fess Parker, Robert Culp, there's one more waiting in the wings...
-
Duh, what the fuck buck?
-
Wasn't that show on for just one season? Amazon had the whole series available for purchase awhile back for about 8 bucks. I still didn't buy it.
-
And you really think this Buck Rogers news is really that bad?
-
And we are talking about a Buck Rogers movie by Paul WS Anderson? Jeez. Priorities...<p>Where are those DVD reviews?
-
I don't think a whole lotta people are talking about the Buck Rogers movie in this thread...
-
RIP Mr. Culp Loved your work....P. Anderson(the shitty one) fucking pos stop fucking with genre properties or just die already. OK I can't wish that on anyone...but how boy just go blind and deaf so you can't direct another movie again.
-
True...<p>I am kinda more shocked that Robert Culp died. All my childhood heroes are slowly croaking.<p>Oh...and I want to see those DVD reviews.
-
Paul WS Anderson is a great pulpy director of totally fun B movies. The unearned hate spewed towards him on this site, is old, unfair, bitter, and outrageous considering the untold hordes of equally talented (or shittier) directors regularly lauded on this site. Take a step back, Harry and take a deep breath. What THE FUCK are you DOING still shitting on this poor fucking Englishman? Because he directed Soldier TWELVE YEARS AGO?
-
March 24, 2010, 6:09 p.m. CST
Ok, Ok, LET Frank Miller direct it instead, I'm sorry I bitched
by Clavius
I mean shit, if THIS is the fucking alternative! Jesus fucking Christ!!
-
Oh well. Looks like that webisode series of Buck is the best we can hope for because the movie is going to be a fucking trainwreck.
-
I completely stand behind Shopping, Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Alien Vs Predator and Death Race as superior, well-directed, modest, genre films. I even kind of enjoy Resident Evil. While I grant you Soldier is terrible, the idea that the screenplay was a magnificent work of art that Anderson trashed is total horseshit. A weak script from a great screenwriter, plus less than great direction rendered that film completely dull and lifeless, not Paul WS Anderson alone. Even if it was TOTALLY his fault, one film is not worth desecrating the poor dude's name for a DECADE, Harry. A DECADE.
-
I've never been able to take Harry seriously since the Blade II review (I was eating my breakfast at the time and had to spew).
-
...now, this??? Paul W.S. Anderson is the worst director working in Hollywood. This company has to be a tax shelter, designed to lose money. They should have casted Vin Diesel as Conan, and they could just about hire any other director and they would be far better than Anderson with respect to finding a director for Buck Rogers.
-
"Paul W.S. Anderson is the worst director working in Hollywood." Just looking at the top ten this week: Andy Tennant, director of The Bounty Hunter, Fool's Gold, Hitch and Anna and the King. Fuck your hyperbole.
-
...they could've hired Stephen Sommers. Oh, but you liked his crapfest Van Helsing, didn't you?
-
I've always liked him better...and AVP wasn't too bad, I liked the director's cut.
-
That is all.
-
give the camera to a blind man and you'd get a better film.
-
is either a liar or an idiot. Some of his movies have interesting concepts and a few good moments, but that's it. None of it holds together. He has no attention span. He blows his load in the first five minutes.
-
to his version of Buck Rogers!! Best of luck!!
-
a brilliant artist. Fuck you, Anderson for that! Fuck you in the ass!
-
How did that happen?
-
file this under movies I won't see. Anderson sucks donkey balls.
-
scene Buck Rogers? I've heard of him. In fact, I'm more familiar with Duck Rogers. Get over it Harry. Hollywood raped my childhood hero cartoons when they hired Bay to direct Transformers, and I actually liked the first one a little bit. Deal with it!
-
Okay, Alien vs Predator was mediocre, I actually enjoyed Soldier (for the most part), and I heard Event Horizon was pretty good (never got around to watching it) but still... giving him Buck Rogers? At least he's a much better director than Uwe Boll....
-
Resident Evil, Event Horizon were definitely watchable. You dorks are just pissed because you have to wait on the prequel Smurfatar 2.
-
Event Horizon was great... shopping was great. even death race was great in a chewing gum for the eyeballs... Also why the FUCK does every movie in 3d make such a big fucking deal... its like saying ' star wars' IN COLOUR. Its the norm now for event movies to be in 3d... fuck me harry you like that talentless hack Kevin Smith... and as for not liking the princess and the frog.... shame...
-
...and still don't due to past dealings with them on a production. They're completely focused on making money and more than happy to take the advice of producers to fatten their accounts over the creative individuals around them handling their properties. Its a shame how the Conan franchise petered out the way it did, but no one to blame but themselves. PWS Anderson is a good BUSINESS decision, and it will probably break even and maybe brings in a profit in the end (he always does) but its never going to do AVATAR business, or JOHN CARTER business (that has PIXAR and DISNEY behind it at least). Unless all our grandparents are thrilled by BUCK ROGERS IN 3D! I don't see where the audience is for this. Then again, there's a forth RESIDENT EVIL movie coming out so what do I know. Then again, PANDORUM didn't do squat. Personally, PWS Anderson's always seemed a bit distant and calculating at Cons - he knows his market and how to lead them along just enough to get them in theaters time after time, but has never come off as PASSIONATE. Paradox can rot though.
-
The problem with this guy is that he takes awesome characters/ideas/properties, and makes them atrociously average. That ain't cool. At ALL.
-
March 24, 2010, 7:18 p.m. CST
Maybe this will get him away from remaking The Long Good Friday
by torontoxic
At least that would be something because him remaking that would be a travesty deserved of the death penalty.
-
"Worst Fucking News Ever"...not really because I don't care about the character. Pixar making a PG-13 John Carter movie was pretty bad news to me. It might be pretty, but it's not what I wanted. I would say P.W.A is "good enough" for Buck Rogers.
-
Nic Cage as Buck Rogers
-
Paul W.S. Anderson is a bad director, and there isn't a visionary bone in his body. Whether he is the worst director in Hollywood is entirely subjective, and I understand that fully--that said, he is one of the worst, if not the worst, director in the history of Hollywood. However, the thrust of my attack is not on him--rather, my attack is on the production company that miscast the lead of the new Conan, a guy who can't act...and has no real stage charisma, although he tries, miserably so on Stargate: Atlantis, and now they have miscast the director of the new Buck Rogers??? That is already two major strikes to start off their company with; one more and they are out!!!!
-
Fuck him and his crappy milkshakes.
-
...it could be worse b/c that fucking scumbag or that joke, Robby Cohen could've gotten the job.
-
I thought the "Star Trek Phase II" people now owned the rights!!
-
He is the only logical choice for Buck. Since Corey Haim is gone.
-
...is evidently not so worthless in the eye's of the studio bean counters. Like it or not, he's commercially successful and while not the best shooter out there he's certainly not the worst. Death Race was a hoot imho(not a patch on Corman's mind) and technically, pretty well executed. Give the poor sod a break, and ease off on the invective, or Milla Jovovic will come looking to whoop your ass (or is that the real reason you're persistantly raggin on him?! him ;-)
-
Dominic Sena, Marco Brambilla, David R Ellis, Stephen Hopkins, Renny Harlin, Brett Ratner and so on. And EVENT HORIZON and DEATH RACE are pretty good movies taken all in all.
-
an actually good director can't make a good movie in 3D, then what chance does this turd have?
-
...DeathShrike has said here. Except that AVP is shite, obviously. Anderson makes great, entertaining B-movies - since when was Buck Rogers anything other than a 'B' property?
-
How does this news affect the James Cawley (Star Trek Phase II/New Voyages) production that is already shooting? Best as I can tell, Buck is not in the public domain, so you may have a rights battle on hand. Let Dr. Theopolis magistrate a ruling!
-
At least it's not Uwe F*#%@ing Boll!!!

Ben Affleck and Paul W.S. Anderson belong together...
by Alice Cooper Stalker
Anything that they touch goes bad.
-
until the onslaught of futuristic, demolition car flicks that's coming over the Horizon. <p Buck Rogers....eh
-
Fact.
-
That might help.
-
And I am pretty sure the W.S. in his name stands for Water Sports which he gets to do with his lovely wife Milla Jovovovovich.
-
AVP could have been done so well on half that fucking budget. Fuck it give me Sommers at least that guy tries to have fun in his movies. Anderson just sucks off the suits and makes a movie they can sell. Palimpsest had a good point though he is better than the choices he listed. I laughed out loud when I read Sena and Ellis's names because I thought "Those guys are horrible".
-
Thank god I don't give a shit about Buck Rogers! Sorry for the rest of you though...
-
so maybe its good material for Worthless Shit. Anderson is a proper geek with zero talent who has somehow become a C grade Hollywood director. To give him his dues he has only ever made genre films and his dubut Shopping was a quirky, brave little film. And when my 14 year old self first saw Event Horizon I thought it was a great flick. Why does it get sooooo much hate?

Paul WS Anderson, Uwe Boll and Michael Bay walk into a bar...
by Colt19801980
not sure what happens next, but im sure a terrible movie would result.
-
Anderson, you lucky bastard.
-
Bridgette Wilson, yum.
-
I see a lot of sweeping statements that this guy is a 'bad' director, but none of you expert critics offer specific details regarding his directing style. Mortal Kombat conjured memories of the old Sinbad movies, and Event Horizon was a pretty good movie. I am looking forward to seeing who he casts in this. I might even try to compose the score this one myself.

But worst news ever was NO GIANT SQUID!!

Yeah, Eli Roth's Buck Rogers would be 100% better, huh? Maybe even Albert Pyun's Buck Rogers... I wonder if Matt Salinger's up for it.

RARRGH!!! VOOOREEEGGH! MMMAARRGGHH!!! JORREEEEEGH!!! AARRGGHH!! REEEEEVORRRR!! AARGH! ARGH! ARGH! AAAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!
-
Are shock peddlers with no business near anything other than more shitty b-movie fare.
-
...get a proofreader, man. Your writing is horrendously bad.
-
I won't argue that he's a shock peddler, cause he is, but he at least has some semblance of artistic vision, lacking though it may be. Uwe Boll is just a travesty.
-
Beedee beedee beedee FUCK YEAH!!!
-
Why is it, Herc, that it's fine for someone to say, "Anyone who says they like W.S.'s movies is either a liar or an idiot," but it's considered a ban-able offense to exclaim that those who like reality shows are idiots? Why the double standard?
-
was badly burned by Soldier as he had so much faith in that film. But "Mortal Kombat" and "Event Horizon" are still fun to watch now. Just saying.
-
The difference is that Boll gets his hands on properties people care about, which brings on the Boll hate. He makes exploitation flicks just like Roth does. Boll has retardedly bad ideas in his movies, but at least they're his wheras Roth rips off of everything else.
-
how'd you like that shoved down your throat, eh Hollywood?
-
Awesome.
-
Harry loved GODZILLA. Harry loved DETROIT ROCK CITY. Harry loved WATCHMEN. Here's my used dildo, Harry. I'm black but my pussy juice isn't chocolate. But feel free to suck on the dildo anyway. You have no taste. None. You put WHITE DOG on a movie festival. And EVENT HORIZON and DEATH RACE are both better uses of time than WHITE DOG. Fuck this I'm out.
-
Ok, I'm not out just yet because of this insanely funny idea. Can't wait til Twikki does a backflip and yells SPACEPANCAKES!
-
Obviously Harry has personal issues with certain directors...I'm thinking theres some level of butt hurt behind the scenes here. As other have stated,it could have been worse...and I've actually enoyed some of Andersons flicks.
-
lol. get real ass wipe. say something worth a shit besides idiotic hate.

I WOULDN'T CALL THIS THE *WORST* FUCKING NEWS EVER
by BringingSexyBack
Maybe the second worst fucking ...
-
I am familiar with Duck Dodgers, but Buck Rogers, never seen anything with him. Sort of like Doc Savage- an old timey character mostly forgetten by everyone for the last 50 years who is now ressurected because studios hate originality.
-
Paul WS Anderson is one of those directors that AICN is obsessively bitchy about. He's just average, not terrible. Kind of like Ratner.
-
the TV show blows. i'd personally be happy to work for him. PAUL, i've got ORIGINAL PROPERTIES!
-
Alright, what's the word? Who owns the rights? James Cawley or the paul NOT THOMAS anderson people?
-
I think your ego is overly inflated. I think the worst fucking news ever would be finding out you only have weeks to live.
-
I don't have a big problem with PWSA's films. Even Soldier at least had a very compelling and stylish first 20 minutes. His produced films like Pandorum & Resident Evil 2 & 3 are frequently more entertaining than his own work. And he makes cheap films look expensive. However, the one major issue I have with his flicks is that they often feel like R-rated exploitation films that have PG-rated sex & violence. If your films are R-rated anyways and your material is obviously low brow, why not be all you can be and fill your films with the gratuitous carnage & boobage that your audience loves? Why try to be so classy about it?
-
I mean what the goony goo goo does this mean? <p> "Well know *now?* they're making BUCK ROGERS with Paul "Worthless Shit" Anderson. This is a director that has continually made shit at a scale that stinks for ages. And yet, I find myself still hoping *hoping for what?* that this director, whose films I continually dislike - and has only ever moderately distracted me... is now making one of my fave characters of the past... in 3D. Fuck." <p> I am seriously confused by that post.
-
I could hear is that someone would actually think harry has a credible opinion on something.
-
Hello Ill try to clarify this for you guys .... Our Project is a WEB series and has nothing to do with this project that is for theatre release RFS/CEC has the WEBSERIES RIGHTS PARADOX has the MOVIE RIGHTS It is our hope to compliment the movie production by providing more BR and increasing interest in the franchise...Our Production shares nothing with the movie or paradox studios Tony Production Crew RetroFilm Studios
-
For those of you that havent seen it Our project is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xUmCVPEvoc
-
In case you hadn't noticed. Joseph Campbell! Edgar Rice Burroughs! Shut the fuck up.
-
The guy that made the only video game-to-film adaptation that didn't suck with Mortal Kombat.<P>The guy that gave us titties in a PG-13 zombie film during the height of the "Scream / I know what your breasteses did last summer" 90s.<P>The guy that made Lance Henricksen happen in the admittedly abysmal AvP.<P>Harry... he's one of us. When will you realize?
-
Event Horizon and Mortal Kombat SUCKED BALLS. Christ almighty.
-
AVP was looney, Death Race was fun, and Mortal Kombat is one of the greatest fighting movies ever made. And I'm an old school Bruce Lee/Jet Li fanatic. Even heaps of ideas (set design, shots etc.) were borrowed by Peter Jackson for the LOTR trilogy! You can see heaps of influence by MK in LOTR. So a big raspberry to you, hater!
-
seeing as he's so hypercritical of a mediocre genre film director when he is HANDS DOWN the worst entertainment writer ever. It's like that assload of barbeque he took a picture of and posted on Twitter before he destroyed it. Lapband? Yeah right. Find some standards and credibility will follow.
-
Just saying.
-
What. The. Fuck. Are. You. Smoking?
-
That's right... Nathan Fillion of Serenity/Firefly and Castle fame is the PERFECT Buck Rogers... His Firefly character is compared to Han Solo, a wise cracking space cowboy... I think with the right storyline, plot, and casting (yes, Nathan Fillion!) the movie *could* be good... Of course, if they pass on Nathan as Buck, there's always the role of Flash Gordon.
-
It's probably the New Line connection that there's similarities. Boromir saying "You fool!" The shot of the light shooting up out of Minas Morgul. The camera rising and spinning round the tower shot... they're all just off the top of my head!
-
Nobody cares about Firefly or Serenity. And Castle? Fft. Ask your wife for the key to the box she keeps your balls in.
-
Harry that film kicks arse even if it does do a ridiculous rip off of the penultimate scene in Don't Look Now. The one with the freak dwarf lady who is the murderer. Anderson must laugh his arse off at Harry. Why would he be bothered by a man who spends all day either watching movies or typing on a computer and actually thinks he is contributing something to the world.
-
Hahahah I read that at first as Wes Anderson. I bet that fucker has been skating along with that name his whole career. <P> Well that and no one really gives a shit about the properties he touches. Whats weird if you look at his box office track record its really fucking week.
-
Everything he touches turns to shit. His work as a director peaked with Event Horizon which only strength is the concept and gets weaker with every repeat viewing. His Mortal Kombat movie is meant for 8 year olds. Even teenagers are embarrassed to watch that shit. His AvP was a complete waste of potential. The predator costumes were obvious and amatuer. The scene were the predator runs side by side with the black chick in slo-mo was a huge "fuck you" to the fans of the original predator. When you're using Death Race to defend a director you know your scraping the bottom of the barrel. Anderson should be barred from any film with a fanbase. He doesn't deserve the opportunity. He weasels his way into every genre movie cause he smells easy money. Opportunistic bitch-whore.
-
well played, Sir. Even now, Harrison Ford and his mid-life crisis earring could eat Nathan Fillion for breakfast. Actually, that would be great show. "Harrison Ford and His Mid-Life Crisis Earring". Together, they fight crime! And fashion!
-
1.Paul is a great genre director with vision.if you are just a movie lover and not a stupid fanboy you can understand that this is a fact, not an opinion. <p>2.Most of his movies have a visual style that a lot of other genre director can not match. <p>3.Most of his movies are commercially successful.that is valid argument only when you start comparing him with a hack like UWe Boll. <p>4.The only backlash he gets is from the insane fanboys because they are bitching for not making their favorite franchises into the movies they want. <p>5.Unfortunately a lot of geek sites follow this wave of negative in order to comply with the general consensus of the bitching fanboys.See Harry above <p>6.I dont know about you,but personally i have enjoyed most of his movies for what they are.I consider MK the best videogame adaptation ever and EH one of the best, most underrated space horror movies ever made.Even a recent videogame has ripped of his movie. <p>6.He is banging one of the most beautiful women in the world.accept it you pathetic wankers. <p>7.Apart from his talent,he is in personal life a very good person.well at least that is what a lot of people who hate them, say about him after meeting him. <p>8.yes he should stop writing the scripts for his own movies. He is a good director but not a good writer. <p>9.unfortunately he is also a yes man that why studios give him to movie adapt a lot of franchises.thats good for the studios to have a lapdog but unfortunately is bad for the movies themselves and for the reputation of the director. <p>10.fuck you.Paul is one of my fav genre directors at the present time.he may not be the best but at least i enjoy his movies a lot more than trash from hacks like Bay or Ratner or MCG.
-
the hypocrisy from people.Take for instance Harry and his pal Del Toro.I like del toro a lot, he is also one for my fav directors but his Hellboy movies are a disgrace to Mignola's masterpiece. And not only that but unfortunately his movies, although visually stunning (the sequel more precisely) and good fun, they are very shallow as story and characterization go.and what Harry did to his reviews? he praised both films as cinematic masterpieces.and this kind of double standards is unacceptable, especially from "professional" movie critics like Harry.
-
I think that sentence got away from you, big guy. you aren't hoping for anything, judging from that sentence. you're just mad. right?
-
He has always tried his strange best doesnt he!?!? surround him with some good people and it would be great. Just dont let him act!
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7dckKRmYzI
-
For what its worth, he's consistently been making/producing genre movies that are few and far between these days. Ya, its a shame he's not more talented, but he still makes very watchable movies. At the worst, you can say that everything he does is average, and that's not such a bad thing. I'll take him over somebody like Sommers any day of the week. Also, death race was legitimately awesome. Just an endlessly rewatchable action movie with great all practical stunt work. I'm really surprised with the level of hatred for this guy.
-
....for fucking up "Resident Evil".<p>Burn in hell, Anderson!!!

is of 500 people sitting in a theatre with 3d glasses on watching a slowly rotating turd for 1.5 hours.

How you cans slam Paul WS Anderson at the same time...
by BurnHollywood
...You're eagerly awaiting Kevin Smith's next effort is beyond me. Smith's an entertaining, likable guy, but come on...
-
I'm pretty sure there's a whole bunch of people living in Haiti, Sudan, Afghanistan and Somalia that would disagree with you... But then again, they don't make Sci-Fi or Fantasy movies so fuck 'em, right, Harry?
-
PWSA is a B grade film maker and a perfect fit for your B grade memories.
-
along with Resident Evil, AVP & Death Race they represent some very watchable genre movies, I personally enjoy Paul WS Anderson's movies as many people have rightly pointed out he has a great unique style that makes his flicks stand out, sure they mighten be up there with the cinematic greats but for a friday nite movie with a beer and curry I know I’m at least gonna be entertained, your hatred for the guy would be more believable if you were I dunno maybe making your own fucking movies that we could all critique, and i betcha a million bucks mate your effort wouldn’t come within a million miles of Pauls' worst.
-
a videogame franchise with a laughable storyline, which gets rebooted in every sequel? and even as gameplay goes, from the dozens that have been made only 2-3 from them are worthy. <p>and lets not forget the terrible movie named RE:regeneration which according to the japs creators was supposed to be faithful to the games opposite to anderson's franchise.and they made a turd. <p>yeah anderson who probably will make RE4,has fucked up the franchise really well.
-
Going to "W.S.'s" "movies". I've never seen someone so terrible get to ruin movie, after movie. Some might say Kevin Smith does that...to them I say fuck yous. W.S makes smith look like fucking Scorsese.
-
He's a horrible director who ruins everything he touches. I'd rather see Brad Bird direct Buck Rogers, rather than do MI4
-
Anything Twilght related on this site.
-
But that had to do with the excellent script. a monkey could have directed that and gotten the same results.
-
There are more talented people on youtube doing creative shit then there are in hollywood. Im dead serious.
-
Frank Miller could have still been directing it!
-
There isn't some NEW Talent out there?
-
...Rob Liefeld of movie making? Wouldn't surprise me in the LEAST if those 2 joined forces...
-
Anderson is a competent director. Hell, I even like the Death Race remake. Event Horizon was pretty good too.

How does this hack keep getting these gigs?
by KEVIN_COSTNERS_RECYCLED_PISS
He's almost as untalented as Uwe Boll. How can you fuck up Aliens vs Predator? I don't know but Fox seems to think hiring talentless retards is a good start. Death Race was so bad I walked out, and I was on a plane at the time! Bada-boom.
-
a better editor for the action scenes and a script supervisor with an IQ of average
-
or Sommers or Ratner or Emmerich?
-
Hope so. Dan Dare is the British Flash Gordon, Buck type...but classier. A straight laced, stiff-upper-lipped David Nivon-type, unless confronted with alien invaders, and then he is BAD-ASS! Anyway, Anderson doing Buck...I liked Death Race and Event Horizon and even the first Res Evil movie is a guilty pleasure, but this guy is still a B movie Hack...so unless they're making a really cheap, knock off version (with Anderson's obligatory computer maps showing the audience where the f**kin' squad are!!!!!) then he's your man.
-
hardly. giant asteroid on a collision course with earth which mean imminennt destruction for every man, woman and child on earth, that is worst news. A boss saying to his employess that they have lost thier jobs is worst news. an insignifigant story on a site which has been killed by an indifferent owner. is not worst news.
-
OK some don't like Paul W.S. Anderson but I like his films, I liked Sodier, Mortal Combat, Death Race. OK Alien VS Predator was poor it was 100000% better than Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. I can think of worse directors and better but on results Paul W.S. Anderson seems safe enough for a Sci Fi film.
-
And that is all that matters.
-
And Event Horizon. It could be so much worse.....Eli Roth, Michael Bay, UWE BOLL?!
-
has changed direction as a film maker. goodby torture porn hello, mainstream!
-
Yes, PWS Anderson is a hack. We know this. There is ample evidence of it. But c'mon...like the TV Buck Rogers was anything other than pure 80s cheese. Fun when I was a kid, sure, but a laugh now (although Erin Gray still looks hot in those shows). The Gary Coleman guest shot? Twikki? Puh-leeze. Point being, it's not like Buck Rogers is hallowed ground any longer. Hard to see WSA doing much worse to it than has already been done.
-
Have American censors done the same shit to the Resident Evil flicks as The Transporter series and Taken? <p>What about Death Race? Was that also PG-13 in America?</p>
-
This Anderson guy could probably pull off a decent WWI UNION JACK flick. At least the action would be right and Statham would be Jack. <p>(Milla as a smoking vampire.)</p>
-
dang miss typing.
-
Okay, Harry, I get it, you're trying to sound like a cool fanboy, but saying "fuck" in every sentence just makes you sound uneducated. I come to AICN less and less these days because of the amateur nature of your writing. Re-read your rant, you just sound dumb.
-
It's all your fault.
-
pocket as much cash as he can and go away and never come back.
-
Presumably by some weird internet meme, Event Horizon & Resident Evil 1 have all become pretty underrated sci-fi horror movies. But when you catch these movies again on tv, they're all really great, solid, dark films. </P> <P>Harry, it has to be said, that when you take a dislike to somebody in the movie business, you certainly don't hold back your vitriol at all. In fact, you get pretty dogmatic about it, to the point where you instantly seem to reject decent films before you've even given them a chance. As a result, I've long since given up on taking your opinion seriously on anything. Especially when you enthusiastically champion some incredible steaming bowls of shit, regularly, in your reviews.
-
... is that it hasn't happened sooner. Seems there is not a single hack in Hollywood that doesn't want to make Buck Rogers. Before, it was Stephen Sommers who showed an interest in it. A director no better then Paul WS Anderson, as anybody who had to suffer through VAN HELSING can testify.

Harry's hate for Paul WS Anderson is puzzling, though...
by AsimovLives
... considering his support and enthusiasm for other hacks like JJ Abrams and Michael Bay. I really never understood Harry selectivism about that. I mean, if you are to despise an hack, despise all of them! Be consistent, for fuck's sake!
-
"There's dozens of directors that I personally know" ... I personally know the lady who sells me cigaretts at 7-11.
-
I heard he doesn't like JJ, could this be true?
-
A few weeks ago they reported that he was in talks for it. What happened? Honestly, I'd rather see Eisner give it a try than PW Anderson, whose only flick I've ever liked was Event Horizon.
-
He's a fucking HACK! He is the very DEFINITION of a hack! Christ - RESIDENT EVIL 1 to 3, SHOPPING, SOLDIER, ALIEN VS PREDATOR - ALL absolute shite. Come ON! MORTAL KOMBAT - yeah, watchable, fun, cheesy, but no classic, and EVENT HORIZON was a great movie - possibly PWSA's one glitch, his happy accident. DEATH RACE was fun in a straight-to-DVD-Van-Damme-type flick, but when you compare it to the original, it's fucking awful. Substituting decent satire for better SFX and stuntwork does NOT make a better movie - and you're an uninformed fucking knuckle-dragging mouthbreather if you think it does.<P> I'll give him MORTAL KOMBAT and EVENT HORIZON. DEATH RACE is okay for a Saturday night with beer and pizza. But the rest of his shit? Godawful. Even Milla can't save the RES EVIL movies.<P> This will suck. How could it not??
-
Usually the Paul WS Anderson TBs are good for a couple really incisive beat downs. You guys are getting fat in your old age.
-
Adults are talking here, fuck off and go play with your JJ Abrams' action figure. By shoving it up your fucking ass.
-
... but to that fucking retard motherfucker called "quantise" or whatever the fuck that bitch likes to call himself. Craptise more like it.
-
Not even those two pieces of shit deserve defending. Event Horizont is like all of Paul Ws anderson, movies with inicial great promise, but terribly executed, and dumbed down to an extreme degree. Event horizont in particular gets the mos thate form me becaus etha tone had a good chance to be really good. But nooooo!!! That would be asking too much from Paul WS Anderson the Hack, wouldn't it? God forbid he even have coherence

Asking cohoerence from start to finish in a Paul WS Anderson mov
by AsimovLives
... is just asking too much from that hack. I don't despise Paul WS Anderson as much as i do Michael Bay, Rennyn Harlin and JJ Abrams, but fuck if i'm going to mistake Anderson for anything other then the hack he is.
-
The Mekon is a great villian and deserves the big screen treatment (if they can do it right). I can only think of Jude Law for Dan Dare right now but Sky Captain might have ruined that...
-
you've had a really easy life on another planet.
-
Who gives a f*** about Buck Rogers? You want the olde skool retro 30s serial version? Go buy them on dvd and boycott the crappy new version.
-
80s cocaine disco FLASH! AHHH AHHH! SAVIOR OF THE COKEYDISCOVERSE!
-
Well, Buck, you're heading direct-to-video.
-
Dan Dare, great idea. The problem is, Dan is english, and the studios would turn him american because, they say, audiences can only identify with americans, you know? They were this close to turn Harry Potter american, but Rawlings told them to go fuck themselves in their asses, either they buy him english or not have him at all.
-
One that had Ming played by a white guy?
-
The sets, the story, characters everything about made for one fucking very enjoyable and scary at the time movie and it still hold up to recent viewings, how any geek/genre fan could not like it seems mad to me
-
Uwe Boll comes to mind ...
-
I hope you're joking, and didn't take the headline literally. I really do.
-
I'm just trying to stay off the "mean Talkbacker" list. The NY Times might be reading this!
-
then we need a British Director with a bit of clout to insist it's done properly. Matthew Vaughn? Cast Jude Law who's quite hot right now and pitch it as 'James Bond in Space' then maybe they stump up the cash....<br> ah well, i can dream can't i?
-
This guy has got to be overseeing it because Buck belongs to his family. Check out his hit list of projects - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0226863/
-
They made that movie though. It was called SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW...
-
Is doing Buck Rodgers?</p><p>I got no fucking problem with that. Besides....this is BUCK FUCKING RODGERS we're talking about here! It's not exactly like he's remaking Star Wars!
-
Buck is not just another super-sci-fi-hero...he is the FIRST! It originates the genre and actual science. Flash, Star Wars, Dan Dare, and Star Trek all took directly from Buck Rogers. So in a way, the film may have the burden to reclaim the genre that has been evolved by others characters over the last 80 years. It could just be a one shot reboot OR Buck comes out of retirement and reclaim the title! Oooh the drama! That is why it should be handled by experts.
-
That's like saying only Stanley Kubrick could do a remake of The Great Train Robbery because it was the first film.

The One Way to save this- LISTEN UP DUMB MALMBERG
by CharlesThomasMathewsMom
Flint Dille is not involved. He licensed the rights to you Malmberg because he believed you would do right by the Family Legacy. Dille is an amazing creator. You need to stop disrespecting him, man up and call the guy. BEG him to get involved. If you do you will have what you dream of, a successful franchise. Conan is gone- Avi Lerner is incapabale of making anything except bullshit- it is not in his nature. Get Dille. Do It today. Or you may not have anything tomorrow.
-
Event horizont is a great horror movie? Have you ever seen a really great horror movie? It's the othe rway around, what's suprising is that a self-confessed movie geek would like such a piece of bullshit as Event Horizont. We are geeks, striving for excelency is our game.
-
How many english directors making american movies staring british actors playing americans do you know? Yeah, exactly! Seems the only movies that americans can accept watching british characters as leads are Jane Austen adaptations and James Bond.

J.J. Abrams should've been hired to direct Buck Rogers.

What that movie needs is a shitload of lens flares. And to keep the original ship design from the 80s series. And maybe Chris Pine as Buck.<P> Yeah, I could see a JJ Abrams BUCK ROGERS... ;D

Sorry had to steal that line from Duckman. And yeah PWSA is pretty shit..
-
a fun yet cool and sharp Buck Rogers, retro WWI and all that. And Rupee, w/out Buck, no Flash would've followed, though I love the Alex Raymond original era, both art and story in those Sunday strips, though Buck is just as entertaining as the feline Martians become Japanese-like baddies, looks-wise, by WWII.
-
Sorry to disapoint, friend. Mas nunca tenhas dúvidas da minha nacionalidade. Português até morrer!
-
Talvez a sua ancestralidade portuguesa, mas tem muitas vezes deslizado idiomatically correto em inglês para me a crer que vocês são realmente português.
-
and even though I loved it, I knew it was shit. Cheesy and repetitive. So maybe a shit director is needed so as not to fuck with the shitness that is Buck Rogers!
-
Are you REALLY surprised by this? I think I realized Hollywood's secret to film making.First off,w e all agree it's just a business, to make money.Art,craft,etc. is 4th on the list of reasons why.Okay, so basically the take a bunch of cards, write the director's who've had big-screen releases, and are the cheapest(thusly the worst), same with script writers, and such. Then they toss it into a giant sphere-like thing(oddly resembling a bingo machine), twirl it aorund, and out comes your hollywood disaster.Makes things real easy.Works for Rothman!
-
Seriously Harry, all these years and this is the worst news you can think of? Paul W.S. Anderson may not be a spectacular director, but by far is he the worst. There is absolutely no way anyone on this talkback can say with a straight face that hes the worst director, if you can then you obviously havent seen very many films. Its true that Resident Evil didnt exactly turned out the way Id hoped, but it was still good nontheless. The only problem with his filmmaking style is that he tries to inject too much action into his films. Thats why he was the perfect choice for MK. Anyway, I havent seen whole alot of Buck Rogers, but enough to know the overall theme of the show. Hopefully he can find a balance between good storytelling and his trademark action. Oh, and I love the idea of Nathan Fillion being Buck. Lets hope they go that route.
-
I'm saying that about Buck.
-
It's so obvious that your "portuguese" post is just an bable fish translation of english to portuguese. No portuguese speaking person, even a brazilian, would write as you did above. By the way, anything i would write in my own language would look strange in a isntant translation into english because portugeuse is a romance language. Structurally, and grammatically a very different language then english. There would be no wway anything i write in my own languagwe would be mistaken for english if instant translated by bablefish. Estás a compreender, compadre?
-
partially because there already was a movie - which did well back in the day and became the show. It is about it being the first influential sci-fi comic hero character. It is PRE-GOLDEN AGE! No other comic character has this resume. And I have to think that Dille is involved as more than a rights holder. If not then YIKES...UH OH is about to happen!
-
Follow up to KILL BILL.
-
That's genius. I can get behind that. And the Resident Evil movies fucking suck ass, I'm always shocked when they turn a decent profit. Death Race was surprisingly watchable, though. It wasn't too bad compared to the average shit Hollywood churns out nowadays.
-
<p>Hello ladies, my name is Buck and im here to...</p> <p>Directed by James Cameron.</p> <p>Starring Sam Worthington as Buck.</p> <p>Milla as some hot chick, Lucy Lawless as the planetary queen.</p> <p>Gamechanger.</p>
-
Harry, your weakness is showing.
-
Well the "worst news" for wingnuts like Chriisssm and that coughlin guy is that Bam signed off on the Healthcare reform bill. <p> buahahahahahah!<p>But seriously, who gives a fuck about Buck?reacting much Harry?<p>Paul Weasel Shit Anderson should be flogged for ruining the Resident Evil series, but damn if MK and Event Horizon was stinkers. I give him props for those two atleast.<p>Everything else, is Shitsville USA.
-
Is that like being turned into a buttock???
-
His Spirit was far worse than anything PWSA had directed or produced.(Yes, even AVP.) I dare any of you say otherwise.
-
Hmmm, It's obvious that you haven't been reading the past TF2 threads during last year.<p>NAY to BAY! (My response to those Gays for Bay.)
-
You sure that they aren't just remaking that crappy video game? They could make THAT in 3-d
-
But he seems inclined to try out his deeply average talents on scripts close to fanboys hearts.<p>Technically his work is fine, but he does seem to lack any real skill in pacing, tone and script editing. A director on films with the modestly high budgets Anderson now recieves should have the clout to push for the best version of any script he takes on. All his work since Event Horizon suggests that he either has no ability or no will to get this done. Somebody mentioned earlier that the script for Event Horizon is a good one: well, no it isn't. It's a fantastic concept with a highly derivative screenplay that doesn't do it any justice at all. The resultant film is NOT frightening and lifts almost all it's big scares from other, superior films (The Shining, Alien, Hellraiser, and most obviously the 1958 version of The Haunting) and really struggles for atmosphere. If the production design hadn't been so fabulous we wouldn't even be talking about it. His decision to foist the abomination that is AvP onto the world hasn't made him a lot of fans of either of those franchises, and with good reason - it's cheapened both to a staggering degree (and let's face it - the people begging for that kind of crap also think a Darth Vader vs Hulk film would be 'kickass') and given all the fun that could've been had with the Deathrace remake, he chose instead to drop as much sick satire as possible and set the whole thing in a prison.<p>The guy seems to have no judgement whatsoever.
-
Movies are supposed to entertain me, his entertain me, i'll watch his movies a million times over movies like brokeback mountain or american beauty and more of these boring depressing movies.

It gets by on being beautifully designed. The concept is great, but blown to crap almost immediately by a script that just rips off other films as much as is legally possible. In the hands of another director (and a better writer) it could have been amazing.

The guy makes entertaining movies, and doesn't deserve this pathetic vendetta. I liked AvP a helluva lot more than Predator 2 or Alien Resurrection. I hate to burst your bubble, but Predator 2 was weak sauce, and until I see something more from your bud, Rodriguez, his take looks equally trite.
-
.. what you actually mean is Anderson will hold Buck down and brutally force himself upon Buck, leaving nothing but a broken, empty shell where there was once a proud, vibrant man.
-
You are as far from sn intelligent movie fan as it is possible to get without getting into metaphysical territory. BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and AMERICAN BEAUTY are movies of such sublime poise, of such nuanced performances and intricate direction, that Paul W S Anderson can spend the rest of his life attempting to rise above his mediocre level and he will never - NEVER - be fit to be a craft runner on a movie as truly great as both of those are. I too have the occasional need for a brainless action epic, but you know what? Even action can be INTELLIGENT. Something PWSA's movies will never, EVER be...
-
So did Stallone. Come on, you think the original was an oscar movie? Pizza and beer ain't always bad.
-
They show it on HBO all the time and I usually end up watching it. At least he's not a fat, leprechaun looking hack like Brett Ratner.
-
While I'm not overwhelmingly interested in a new version of Buck Rogers (well, I might be, if it's REALLY exciting), I think Paul Anderson is getting a lot of undue hate. Event Horizon is one of the best sci-fi horror movies ever made, PERIOD, and Mortal Kombat is without a doubt the very best video game to movie adaptation ever filmed to date. On top of that, he took Resident Evil and managed to turn it into a damn good zombie franchise. You can whine incessently about it pissing all over the video game or whatever, but as has been pointed out previously, only a 2 or 3 of ALL the RE games has been worth a crap. Odds are, in Anderson's doing a film, I'm gonna see it and be at least moderately entertained, and that's the best I can ask out of any director these days.
-
Aliens vs. Predator was actually a lot of fun, as long as you take it for what it is. Saw it in the film, enjoyed it for good fun, bought the DVD, so what?
-
Had some horrible voice acting. <p>Maybe only bested by Silent Hill 1 on Playstation 1. I know. Own it, played it, beat it several times. Not a huge fan. Anymore. Horrible, horrible voice acting.</p> And seeing as the RE1 movie is a prequel, it didn't piss on the game either. If anything it made the story of the game better.
-
I hear ya. But let's not be so serious. One mans pile of crap, another mans pile of gold.
-
Resident Evil 1 was an excellent sci-fi/horror. Maybe by writing this, it will encourage a few others to agree with me. </P> <P> Come on out, anyone else who agrees. You don't have to be afraid of the hive-mind and their memetic 'opinions'. Even some of the writers on this site have their taste in their arses.
-
Paul WS Anderson is a jobbing director, takes the gigs, brings them in on time and on budget, no real flair of his own, totally workmanlike, purveyor of pretty much B-movies (in budget and execution), slightly slicker than your straight-to-DVD fare, that get a shot at a cinema release because usually they're video game adaps or whatever. <p> <p> He's not a fucking pox on cinema. He's churned out one or two perfectly serviceable and entertaining movies within the last decade, which is two more than some of the over-the-hill one-hit-wonders-from-years-ago, and outright hacks, that continue to get fellated by this site and yourself in particular. <p> <p> Am I glad Anderson's doing Buck Rogers? Fuck no. I want to see Fillion (SOMEONE give that dude a shot - along with Josh Holloway now he's unemployed, those guys are Harrison Fords-in-waiting) as Buck in a mega-budget, Indy/Bond-in-spac e franchise, starting with a kick-ass £250m Summer tentpole. <p> <p> Looks like that ain't happening. <p> <p> Disappointing. But not the WORST FUCKING NEWS IN THE WORLD EVER. Get a grip dude. <p> <p> You're hatred of this guy (along with Ratner, who's pretty much of the same ilk) is baffling, when there are so many more candidates deserving of such scorn. <p> <p> Biddi-biddi-biddi.
-
.. filming this fucker in 3D means, under PWS, it stands a high chance of being 33% MORE below-average.
-
Funny Dino De Laurentis story, told by Milius on the Conan commentary track(which everyone should have heard by now.): <p>Arnolds reaction upon first seeing De Larenthis, sitting behind his big office desk.</p> <p>"Hahaha, why does such a small man need such a big desk?"</p> <p>Dino proclaimed:</p> <p>"That's conan!"</p> <p>The rest is history.</p>
-
I said it earlier, but it bears repeating because Ray Gamma has inspired me: I loved the first movie. Thought it was perfectly entertaining on it's own regards because it didn't try and copy the video game directly, blow for blow (which would most certainly have sucked big time). Bixby Snyder is right..."You, Jill, the Master of Unlocking"...need I say more? RE1 was a lot of fun though, and an (almost) full frontal from Milla? Definite win across the board.
-
EXACTLY! That line was horrible. Also, if she was "The Master of Unlocking" why was Barry the one with the lockpick!? The Jill Sandwich also comes to mind...
-
It was a really serious movie, it took itself seriously within its own 'universe', in the same way that Event Horizon works well too because it took itself seriously. </P> <P>I would put Resident Evil 1 on a par with Romero's original classic "Dead" films, it certainly has the tone of "Day of the Dead (1985 original)", which I personally consider to be the greatest zombie film ever made to date.
-
About Transporter and Death Race. PG13 or R in America? What are the ratings on the Resident evil flicks over there?

I will never forgive the man for AVP.
by NomoredirtyjokespleaseweareYanks
The Alien franchise was destroyed by this man. He even made a dumbed-down Predator film. I was always dubious on the guy, Event Horizon being your best film does not bode well, and when they gave him AVP I was mortified. Turns out my suspicions were correct as he turned out the dumbest, most predictable film he possibly could.<p> Look... the Predator films are great fun(the first is an action classic) but the Alien films were something else entirely(cept for 4). They went beyond the call and were intelligent, well acted genre films. Now you can argue all you want about part 3(killing off Newt and Hicks seems to be the biggest annoyance) but compared to pap made today is seems like the fucking Godfather. Yes it has it's problems but AVP is trash. Utter fucking trash that makes Alien Resurrection look like a good idea. <p> Anderson defenders can go and get fucked. All you have to say to win this argument is the guy made AVP. Fuck him.

..atleast his adaptation of RE was more tolerable than Bay's Lameformers. The RE games were never meant to have serious dialogue when compared to the MGS games, as a matter of fact Mikami likened the RE franchise moreso to John Carpenter's films than Romero's.FYI The music from the RE Movie was partially inspired from JC's soundtracks.
-
<p>Yes it's true. NOW, go watch Conan, learn what's good in life. Also: Listen to the commentary track for more hilarious stories and statements.</p> <p>"Hahaha! Look at me spanking her butt...I love it!" Bless you Arnold.(No sarcasm, i mean that.)</p>
