Where is/are the talkbacks???????

Bring Firefly back. Don't care how. God it sort-of sucks but is awesome to imagine where that show could be after seven seasons. What could have been. I avoided it for a long time - wasn't a massive Whedonite, dug what Angel I'd seen, never bothered with Buffy), and I thought the DVD cover made it look like some shit along the lines of Andromeda or Lexx...

God was I wrong. The characters and the universe that were built in thirteen short episodes. I remember thinking "this could be the new Star Wars", and meaning it. Thank God we got Serenity. Too bad it was totally mismarketed as Freaky Kung-Fu Space Chick - in a perfect world we'd either have a trilogy or a continuing show.

You know, those episodes that end and you're like...damn... that was good.

Thanks for all of the information. I don't follow the expanded universe, so I didn't hear about the Angel flap/ Interesting.

As a die-hard comics geek,I found this article massively entertaining and informatvie. I wish more companies would listenup and do what Dark Horse is doing-I've heard from numerous sources that the reason we dont have more Firefly merch is because the companies dont think theres a market for products based on a cancelled sci-fi show. Like Charlie Noodles,Dark Horse is good peoples!!!

i think there actually is a reference of how much time passes between the show and movie. at the beginning of the movie when the ship goes phooey, Mal complains to Kaylee that she claimed a certain ship part would last a week and she then corrects him saying its been 6 months. i always figured that was a reference to the episode Out of Gas. either way i dont see why the comics matter to continuity. sure they might be considered canon and all but most people havent and probably never will read the comics. all they know is the show and movie. sorta the same boat that Buffy and Angel are in. as a fan it WOULD be cool to see a new movie/show go from where the comics lead off but i would be shocked if that ever happened.
March 22, 2010, 7:54 p.m. CST
I can't read all this, and I'll never read the comics, but yeah, add me to the list of people who still really miss Firefly.
March 22, 2010, 7:54 p.m. CST
and I've never liked any of his work except Firefly, which I dearly LOVE! Articles like this make me sad that we will never see season 2. How hard would it be to get Ron Glass in a Sci Fi movie of the week doing A Sheperds Tale? Come on. Even if we don't get the rest of the crew.

So glad to know there's still stories coming from that universe. That was a helluvan interview.
March 22, 2010, 8:28 p.m. CST
I'd sell a testicle if it got me a few more Serenity sequels. Seriously - who needs a spare?

What did he do there? And I haven't enjoyed the Serenity comics, I don't think they're capable of writing/drawin the characters anywhere near as well or uniquely as the actors portrayed them.
March 22, 2010, 9:18 p.m. CST
Killing Wash was just plain pointless and didn't work for the movie at all.
March 22, 2010, 9:27 p.m. CST
but I didn't take it so hard. Buffy eps used to be spoiled 2-3 days before they went on air through wildfeeds & I think a lot of old school Buffy fans were used to it [the newer fans - yes, Buffy is being rediscovered - were the most vocal about it, I think.]
What a great interview. So glad to hear Joss is keeping busy. Can't wait for the next project.
March 22, 2010, 9:58 p.m. CST
Not nearly as great as the series. I think they should pretend Serenity never happened. I agree that killing Wash was pointless. Another issue I had was the Buffy element with River. I was hoping she'd be more powerful in a way not physical (face it, you have the physical elements in play). It would have been better if she could "hi-jack" bodies, telesentience. More eerie and less reflexive than a 80 pound girl doing sidekicks. Firefly was much smarter and darker than the film.
I was disappointed in the movie. But I want Firefly back.
March 22, 2010, 10:04 p.m. CST
He's not dead, he's been Reaverfied. Mal and Zoe will get him back, and deprogram him somehow.
March 22, 2010, 10:42 p.m. CST
Awesome, because I love and support many of the titles you discussed with my hard earned cash. Awesome because I love Joss, Buffy AND Firefly. But! I just want to know when you'll be getting around to publishing some new Grendel stories. Can ya help a geek out with that? Please.
March 23, 2010, 1:02 a.m. CST
would be awesome
March 23, 2010, 7:59 a.m. CST
Wash's death, was not pointless. Shocking? Yes. Pointless? No. Interviews with Joss regarding the death, have said exactly what I felt. That being said, when Wash dies, It's so fast, you are given no warning and there is no time for greiving. At that point,2 of the old crew are now dead, and all bets are off on who's next. It raised the stakes for the final battles.
March 23, 2010, 8:36 a.m. CST
You know I felt the same watching the first episodes.
If they could just rein in Josh a little and get him to center himself, he could be GREAT.
March 23, 2010, 8:56 a.m. CST
Saw the movie. Just didn't get it. Not gonna waste my time with the tv series.
March 23, 2010, 8:58 a.m. CST
going away now.

Excellent interview, Mark and Scott! I'll definitely be picking up the "Serenity" comics, especially Book's story. Can't wait to read that.
It's also great to see Patton Oswalt, multi-talented bastard that he is, writing a comic episode. He's been doing a great job on "Caprica" as the talk show asshole, so he's definitely got the chops.
Also, thanks for the Dark Horse art previews. It's wonderfully expressive stuff. Praise to the artists involved.

The entire point of firefly is that its bigger than life, idealized scifi folk tales. Having wash die had no meaning. If this were 'Saving Private Ryan' it would have been ok. It's not... Despite all the stupidity that Wheadon spouted about killing off Wash as a "good idea", in reality we all know he regretted it. The story itself just kind of tacks it on. If he had died in the middle, and there had been real time devoted to what happened after, that would make sense. Just a bad call.

The best thing about Firefly though is that this can be undone.... simply have Zoe sign the final papers on his "insurance policy" that she never knew about and make a new Wash show up in a box one day. Bio-consciousness-backups or something like that.
You could play it funny or serious... in that universe, you can get away with that.

I just wish it was given a few full years. They renewed Dollhouse but trashed Firefly. Go figure. I'm pleased they're doing comic books. I think Book's story is one of the big mysteries that were never solved.
March 23, 2010, 11:47 a.m. CST
Everything you just wrote makes me thankful Joss Whedon is the man in the driving seat of Firefly/Serenity, and not you.
March 23, 2010, 1:51 p.m. CST
Thankfully, I didn't see the cover solicitations, so I was completely unspoiled for the Angel/Twilight reveal. Wasn't shocked, but definitely had a second of whaaa? Now I'm really curious how they're going to explain this and if they will fit into IDW's continuity, despite Bill Willingham's bitching. Though I will give him credit to be the first Angel writer that didn't completely suck since After the Fall.
March 23, 2010, 7:23 p.m. CST
I don't know how you consider killing off a main character a cheap ploy? That's as expensive as it gets. A cheap ploy, is when Lucas kept Han Solo around for ROTJ. Harrison Ford even lobbied to have him killed off at the end of Empire. Watch A New Hope, then jump right to Jedi, and you will be wondering, WTF happened to this cool as fuck smuggler bad ass, that made him such a disposable, bored imitator. That's cheap.
March 23, 2010, 8:16 p.m. CST
ok I guess we agree to disagree.

Raw_bean, chill out dude. I was simply stating my opinion. If you don't think my "Wash in a box" idea isn't something Whedon compatible, I think you don't pay very close attention to the Firefly universe.

Oh and lets not make Whedon out to be a god. He's good, and I am a big firefly fan, but lets not make him out to be something he's not.
March 24, 2010, 12:09 a.m. CST
The world of Firefly is dead as far as the live cast&crew... It's a sad fact we have to deal with.

Joss just took story points that he was going to use for Serenity/Firefly and used them in the unnecessarily long and drawn-out plot of Dollhouse.
