You used it in the last post about the spinoff. I'd look it up but I'm too lazy.

How's that for a definition!

What the fuck?
Why the need to take it off for so long? -
I watched all of SG-U (feel free to question my taste, but I do like Robert Carlyle in virtually everything he's in), but I don't think I could be arsed watching it when it comes back after 6 months.
Same for Flash Forward. Same for V, despite Elizabeth Mitchell. I can just about tolerate it when South Park does it because it's never on long enough to build up a head of steam anyhow. Most of the year, it feels like South Park was cancelled years ago. -

If Only Caprica had built up a head of steam to start with
by thegoldbergv
I know people knock this show for being slow. And I get that. I like shows that would be classed as 'slow builds', ie The Wire, Mad Men, Deadwood etc. Caprica though is just ponderous bullshit half the time. 2 weeks ago they delivered a pretty solid episode, moved forward the story A BIT and introduced Vergis, who seems like a interesting character. Then last week the brakes come on again...
What did Joe Adama do last week? Well he tracked down that V world kid, went into New Cap City, walked around, walked around a bit more, then some more, found another V world kid and that was it. Wow, what a great hour of television. Amanda Greystone meanwhile saw her dead brother. Then saw him again, then got drunk, then got stoned. Another peice of compelling drama. Lacy sat on the swings and retold her whole arc thus far to another character who knew it all already, and Daniel found ot that the MCP chip (or whatever its called) didn't work before he stole it. Yeah you could argue that there was some interesting backstory sprinkled in as well with crazy Amanda and stuff, but overall it doesn't add up to much. Considering this will be the 9th episode of Caprica (counting the pilot as 2) how much plot progression have we actually had?! No one knows about the bombing, no one knows why they were going to Gemenon (not even the audience), no one knows what Clarice is up to, no one other than Lacy knows about Zoe in the cylon body. That last one looks like it might change, but really Caprica needs to get into gear or make its characters more interesting, because its at the moment people will struggle to remember much about it when it goes off the air for 6 months. I'm still watching for the occasional bit of intrigue and because I loved BSG, but honestly I don't see how this deserves a 2nd season commission based on what we've seen so far -
Serge knows!

Friday Brings Syfy's Almost-Last CAPRICA Till Autumn!! ...
by jimmy rabbitte
Yeah, Autumn of 2011. Because that's how SyFy screwed BSG; and that's how they'll screw any of the poor souls who have been taken in, by another SyFY / Ron Moore offering.
-
Confident.
It was called high school. You should have attended. -
I don't care if it's canonical or not, it wasn't on the show, so you can't expect the audience to know.
-
Last week was a total FRAKKING WASTE! I HATE Zoe's mother. She is stupid and boring. Her actions are senseless. The previous week was a huge improvement on the story telling but last week felt like two steps backwards. Please please please get better Caprica before you piss it all away.
-
I think all the talky talky is not making Sci-Fi all that happy about the show. The ratings have been steadily decreasing since day one. Its an ambitious show, but its a complete 180 from the original. It seems rather boring.
-
starting with the whole "new cap city" thing, so SyPhy better not cancel it
-
Don't feel embarassed - and SG-U is about to get A LOT BETTER! Also Caprica exceeded my expectations - hope there is a satisfying conclusion.
-
the hiatus has successfully killed any interest I had in the show. (Which wasn't much to begin with anyway.)
-
And the gaps between are far too long. But if that's what it takes to get some good television, fine. It seems to be the way they do things in the UK. I honestly hope we do not start adopting that model though. With things like the last season of Torchwood blowing it's load in a week. Or Survivors just getting good again and then being over. Well, at least we have Breaking Bad this week. Can I get a huge SHIT YEAH??
BTW, SG-U was actually not too bad and went into hiatus on a promising, risky note. Unless they resolve it cheaply in one episode. And that's saying something, coming from someone who just never "got" and of the Stargate shows. It always felt like a cross between Gilligans Island, Xena and bad outdoor episodes of Voyager, featuring the same Canadian forest for every alien planet. And the same Renaissance Faire village every week. Maybe I never gave them a fair shot, but every time I tried I was bored to death. SG-U has some pretty damned fine acting, an interesting story, a great main set, more than decent effects and no forehead-ridge aliens so far. (not that there's anything wrong with that.. hey it worked like magic at times on Farscape) -
and he's bullSHITting us. I'll believe it when I see it. And I do want a second season of Caprica. I'm just so used to being disappointed in Skiffy, I don't buy anything anymore. Except season sets.
-
I loved seeing the Vipers a couple episodes ago, the new/old designs are pretty badass.
Anyone else notice the insert shots of the pilots working their controls that came from BSG and Razor? Bet their kicking themselves for selling all the props and costumes now. -
Damn enter key.
-
successful with the last season of BSG: if by success you mean PISSING OFF the audience and giving them several months to lose interest. This channel is run by fools and tools.
-
and it would still be 75% below my interest level now. Hugely disappointing--more of the SGA writing style that requires them to be complete morons for the first three quarters of an episode, and then brilliant geniuses for the last quarter. So much potential with the premise, but they began pissing it away in the early episodes.Writer's room: We got nuthin, here, no ideas. Dammit. Hey, grab that boiler plate outline again, wouldja? Okay: they arrive at a planet, desperately in need of __________. They go thru the gate in search of ___________. On a time limit, of course, they have to go really far from the gate before they find _________. Will they make it back in time with the __________???? Yes, but just barely. Lots of cuts to the clock counting down because that is The Only Way To Create Tension per our Hack Handbook.Okay, we can do this lotsa times, right? 2-3 times already--silica sand, water ice, lattes, er not lattes, but something else. Okay we just need a new ______ and we can recycle the hell outta this thing. Specially with long hiatuses, they might not even remember the boring shit recycles from before, so it will seem Fresh.
-
Clarice wants Zoe's avatar program because she thinks its the first step to immortality. She made that pretty clear in last week's episode. They were going to Gemenon to meet up with a larger group of monotheists where Zoe could develop her program (covered in the Pilot). The idiot kid detonated the bomb without Clarice's knowledge or authorization, probably at the behest of the rival leader played by Marsten, who didn't know about Zoe or the Avatar program. Admitedly the show is dense and a little slow, but like BSG, much of the plot is not spelled out directly but rather implied. The audience has to pay attention.
-
Not so vocal these days?

...as someone else pointed out above. Which seems to be a reference to the Basestar Hybrids' way of ending one of their avant-slam-robo-poetry readings:
"...End of line."
Think this about to get a whole lot more interesting for us longtime BSG fans. -
Tron is an avatar in New Cap, and New Cap is run by a Caprican named "Flynn".
Or not. I'm very high right now. -
I do pay attention. But its difficult when at least a third of each ep is soooo boring. If the slow pace is to build the characters, then at least show us them doing something interesting. The biggest problem is Amanda Greystone. So far, Caprica has given us no reason to care for her character. We know she's a doctor but we've never seen her at work (although she did sit behind a desk once), we know she went nuts, we know it only takes one drink to get her to let you into her husband's top secret lab and we know that she is prone to acts of hysterical idiocy ("My daughter was a terrorist! I know this because she had this badge in her room!"). Otherwise she just sits around smoking and looking thoughtfully into the middle distance. In terms of interest, Daniel's go-to-guy at Greystone Inc, (the asian guy) is more interesting, even though I can't remember his name. Then we have Joe Adama, who we know from BSG is a wizz human rights lawyer, although we've never seen him in the courtroom. In fact, we very rarely see him take charge of anything, he just reacts to stuff. Clarice is a mystery, but thats ok buts that the point. With the lack of a single major narrative to tie everyone's arcs together, it all just lacks focus and nothing feels urgent or vital. Then every now and again they throw a good scene in (like the Vergis/Daniel showdown or Barnabus' intro) just to remind us the potential of this show. But man is it fustrating.
-
Especially when it comes to sci-fi shows, which are generally more intelligent, and require more buildup before the fan base gets behind them. Fringe, Jericho, even BSG ... all lost significant steam with a huge gap. Very annoying. I was just starting to get into this show...
-
Nice quick recap, I love the show. Yes its slow at times but to me thats going to pay off in the long run. I think the slow build will turn around by the end of the 1st season. Mid season 2 will bring the 1st Cylon war.
-
Syfy and their 'we put on 6 episodes, now you can wait a year for 6 more' bullshit can KISS MY ASS. I'm so tired of waiting for the second half of damn near anything I'm just giving up on this channel.
-
Showing 1/2 seasons at a time is nothing but a money grabbing ploy from the Powers-That-Be. They air 1/2 a season and then package it for purchase, and the sum total cost of x.0 and x.5 is greater than what they could sensibly charge for a full television season. "Stargate Universe 1.0" has been solicited, "Eureka 3.0" is available for purchase, and you can expect "Caprica 1.0" to be solicited in the near future. All this began when the @$$h0l3$ in charge decided to split up BSG Season 2 into two separate DVD sets.
I thank them, though. I decided to not buy BSG 2.0 when it was first released because I was pissed off by the obvious money grab. My intent was to eventually buy BSG 2.0/2.5 together for cheap when it would inevitably be released at a lower price. Then, BSG Season 3 happened, I lost any interest I had in buying more BSG, and I saved a bunch of money. -
"Stargate Universe 1.0" is already available for purchase and it costs $41.50 on DVD and $40.50 on Blu-Ray at Amazon.com. That's for 10 episodes.
-
To be fair, Graystone merely suspects that Zoe is in the Cylon body at the end of last week's episode. He doesn't have definitive proof, yet.
-
And all this shit will be hashed over again.
So say we one, so say we all!
--From The Prophecies of Merlin -
Zoe Greystone's Avatar is in the Cylon's body!
-
For a genius, the guy is quite the idiot.
-
That was some pretty cold shit, making ol girl shoot her dog! And I am still loving the NEW CAP CITY insanity! Although I do wish Papa Adama had blasted that Tranny on his way out.....
-
make SG: Universe AND Caprica worth watching. Caprica is really surprising me as I loathe prequels.
-
but not as good as TIAS a few shows back. Hopefully in season 2 the show will have found its footing to such an extent that it can feature an entire episode in NewCap.
The only thing holding this show back is Amanda. She is dead weight. -
Zoe's mother is going to turn out to be one of the final 10 cylons which only 5 survive to BSG.
-
It was almost completely divorced from the plot lines in the first half of its season.
-
IT'S TOO SLOW !!!..........WAAAAAAHHHH..........IT'S TOO BORING !!!..........WAAAAAAAHHH..........I DON'T UNDERSTAND IT !!!..........WAAAAAAAHHH..........I JUST PEED IN MY DIAPER !!!
-
New Cap is getting very cyberpunky.
Daniel is a cold-hearted SOB making her endure all that.
Looking forward to the next episode. but the delay I'm afraid might kill the show :( -
C'mon, way to kill off momentum. Sci Fi is the master of killing off great shows. I sometimes think they do it on purpose to justify churning out crap like Dinoshark vs. Mansquito.
-
I didn't care for the show to much early on, but the last 6 or so episodes have really turned it around. I'm really liking it and not because it's BSG, but because it's good Science Fiction. I do agree that these six month gaps are hurting some shows. A show like Flash Forward was starting to get a lot better before its hiatus, but its winter break killed any momentum it had left and now no one really cares about it (myself included). Hopefully V won't suffer the same fate when it returns, that was a lot better and I suspect is about to kick into high gear. Oddly Burn Notice and Leverage both do really well and go unaffected with their long breaks between half seasons.
-
He said it more matter-of-factly. If you're excited about the line, put the exclamation points after the quote or something.
-
What a tragic loss for him. It's like when my mom and dad took my Nintendo away in 7th grade for spitting on the teacher.
-
Anyone else notice the Graystones’ house looks like Baltar’s house in the pilot of BSG?
-
Only less canibal/more rape?
-
Man last nights episode of both shows was great...some much hot ass on Spartacus..loved the girl fight..the show gives me a woody. Loved Caprica, shame that she was able to get through his tests and be hidden still.

One of the most fucked up episodes of TV in recent memory...
by tailhook
Between this and There Is Another Sky... Caprica has at least shown it can put out some high quality watchable episodes. The rest have been /yawn, but these two are the clear standouts and bode well for the future. I'm particularly liking Eric Stoltz bringing the crazy and I've never much been a fan of his.
-
I seem to recall most people spotted that in the pilot.
-
Is from programming. It denotes a command or phrase used to tell the system you are done with that line of code and to move on to the next.
-
Caprica started off really slow but has become interesting. Spartacus is a poor mans "Rome" but if it eventually moves into more ambitious territory it could be quite good. Right now spartacus is just a guilty pleasure with cheesy effects.
-
thank god! i thought i was alone about spartacus!
-
But I agree with Frodo, if it doesn't expand out of the ludus and become something grander it will run out of steam. Some simply awesome hot naked babes are on this show heh. I had a feeling that the girl Spartacus was boning was the one that hated him. Damn did she fuck that other girl up something fierce though.
-
It started off kinda soapy but seems to be moving into sci-fi drama proper. Good stuff.
And yes, Spartacus has become a guilty cheesy pleasure for many, including me! -
NOTHING has happened on this show, and it's almost halfway through the first season! We are still basically at the point we were at the end of the pilot. Zoe is still trapped in a cylon body. Her parents still think she blew up the train. Her friend still hasn't found her a ride to Gemenon. There is still only one working cylon. Nobody knows how to build any more. Nobody has died. Nobody is in any danger. You could skip several episodes by accident and never realize it, because every episode ends with everything in the exact same place as it started. This is worse even than the final few episodes of BSG where the fleet just sort of drifted in space going nowhere for episode after episode.
-
Sure if you compare Spartacus to Rome it sucks, most shows suck compared to Rome. But even being a quarter as good as Rome is better then just about everything else on TV. They seem to be shying away from the cheesy blood spatter screens as well. But the characters are definitely getting more interesting. Plus Xena naked every episode helps as well!
-
Lucy Lawless's character started playing mind games with her "friend".
And yeah, she messed up that girls face pretty badly. I had to watch that scene again because I couldn't believe what I was seeing.
But when Lucy Lawless bent over and kissed her, I thought the producers missed a trick. They could have bought a lot of fan attention by casting Renee O'Connor in the role. -
http://i101.photobucket.com/albums/m80/EvanescenceGir1/renee_o_connor0010.jpg
-
...as is everyone on this show. Something that frustrates me about this show, as with LOST, is that people don't simply talk to each other about whatever the fuck is going on. I tell my wife probably too many mundane things about my daily life, why wouldn't these people tell others about the BIG things happening in their lives?
Also, think Joe would do better in gangster world if he brought, I dunno, a real gangster, his fucking brother, into gangster world with him? -
for their "sweeps" or something. But you've hit the nail on the head, re: communication. The characters act extremely dumb, so the writers can craft their A->B moments.
-
They don't talk or ask questions that normal people would ask. You could pick every single show on tv apart. The reason he doesn't tell his brother is because he would be furious to know that Joe is still chasing after his dead daughter after they already did the Tauron death ritual to release his wife and daughters soul. Also he is neglecting his son while he is chasing after his dead daughters avatar. His brother would never understand that, in fact he would be furious with him for it.
-
Let's say Joe tells Sam all about the avatar thing and spins it into Tamara's soul has been captured in the v-world and we need to free her so she can take her dopey boat ride. There's probably other ways to explain it to Sam, but the point is that it's retarded to exclude him from Mafia Wars. They could buy a few more of the v-glasses, invite a few other Taurons, and mount a full assault on Mafia Wars, take over the whole damn game, and then do whatever the hell they want.
All of this is pointless anyway, Tamara is the guide chick, I guaran-fucking-tee it. -
She got shot, didn't she?! I remember thinking about that for a moment, then it appeared she was just clipped, so I just went along with it, but yeah, she's probably the guide!
That tranny freaked me out by the way. No more tannies please. I was having my breakfast for fuck's sake! -
It has potential.
-
was shot, I changed my mind because the fx were different and she seemed concerned about de-rezzing.
If they do make her the guide, like something out of Robin Williams' "What Dreams May Come" then I'll be pissed. -
Please explain that, I am not clear on what you guys are talking about.
-
this girl appeared to him, and said she was being paid by someone in the real world to act as his guide.
Now, since the only other person who knew Adama was in the real world was the kitchen working kid, this is highly unlikely.
She also admitted that she doesn't look like her avatar.
She was the one who gave Adama the "AMP" drug. Do you know who we mean now? -
So your saying that Tamara changed her appearance INGAME to be this other girl who is guiding him around looking for Tamara right? Makes sense...
-
Personally, I hope they didn't do that because it's a real cliché.
-
I thought the line was more like "I'm someone who's being paid to help you." The only person I know who's being paid to help him is that Law Clerk woman (Evelyn?) My first thought was that the guide was her.
-
My last post is for you as well...
-
...in either this episode or the previous one that it was explained that Joe Adama himself was paying her in the real world with real world cubits to guide him and it was setup by the now "dead" kid.
-
Oh, okay then. Still would be cool though. Didn't Joe Adama send her to find that kid? I know I'm grasping at straws, but it's fun.
