Fox Could Announce CONAN O’BRIEN SHOW By Its May Upfront??

Published at:  Mar 17, 2010 2:35:13 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“Fox Broadcasting is inching closer to bringing Conan O'Brien back to late night,” begins Meg James’ story in Wednesday’s Los Angeles Times. The second paragraph:

Key Fox executives, including Rupert Murdoch, are on board with the plan and would like to finalize a deal in coming weeks so they can make a splash on May 17 when the network unveils its fall lineup. Several significant issues remain and the Fox talks could fall apart, according to people close to the negotiations who asked anonymity because the discussions were meant to be private.

According to the piece Fox appears to be looking to spend less than $60 million annually to mount a new Conan show, compared to the $90 million per year earmarked for O’Brien’s version of “The Tonight Show.”

Interestingly, there’s talk of leasing the old “Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” stage on NBC’s Universal City lot for any new show O’Brien might undertake, according to the article. NBC Universal, which spent nearly $50 million renovating the facility for the short-lived talk show, appears to be good with this idea. (Jay Leno is now hosting “The Tonight Show” from his old “Jay Leno Show” stage on another lot a short distance away.)

Under the terms of his multimillion dollar NBC settlement package, O’Brien is prohibited from launching a new TV show until September.

    by spice-orange

Dave can't even tackle Leno, Conan wont stand a chance. I would much rather have Kimmel and Conan on ABC. FOX doesn't have a good track record in keeping their late night shows up to snuff. Regardless, late night TV is pretty awful in general. I much prefer podcasts these days. uncensored, great hosts, great guests, FREE, and no one is afraid of telling it how it is. SO refreshing.

    Taht stage is poison

    by daggor

The stage Conan's Tonight Show was on was WAY too big - it sucked the fun out of the show. The close quarters helped make the Late Night show feel cheap, intimate and weird, and that's important. He was yelling at Andy over at the podium, and guests had too far to go to get from behind the curtain to the desk.

    by tensticks

It's a bad idea for him to go head to head against Leno AND Letterman. Let those two slog it out--Dave is my personal dog in that fight--but Dave fans are more likely to be Conan fans and vice versa than either of them are to be Leno fans. So go on an hour later, Conan! Please! That's a win/win for everyone!

    by ledgerat

Fox doesn't have news at 11, they have it at 10...everything I've heard is that the idea is to get Conan on at 11. People can watch him instead of local news..he would have a 30 minute jump on Leno and Dave...and at least have good ratings for that time frame...people might watch 30 minutes and then go to be instead of staying up and watching Leno.

I only ever watched 30 minutes of Dave or Leno and went to bed myself, at least before my daughter came around and I got too old and tired to make it that far.

    by bizarrojerry

But I often watch it Friday nights if I'm home, and I usually DVR it and watch if someone I like is on it. In any case, I like Conan and don't like how NBC handled things, even though the guy still got all kinds of cash for his trouble.I don't know if he's going to beat Jay or Dave if he's at Fox, but his very existence will spread out the ratings a bit. I think the drama at NBC will at least get some curious first time viewers. The only problem there is that the several month gap is going to slow down the momentum that he would've had if he showed up a few months later. But I'm sure Fox will be willing to wait it out longer than NBC was.

The BIG problem is Fox syndicates don't have their hands tied like the majors do. Many are doing great w/reruns of Simpsons, The Office & whatnot...they're doing well as an alternative to late-night talk (which is down huge over the 80's to begin with). They are NOT going to take a risk of ratings/ad-revenues plunging if/when they shift to trying to splinter the late-nigh gabfest world.

11:35 Conan will steal more from Letterman than Leno

    by spyguy

The mentally bankrupt tune in to Leno religiously as long as he doesn't compete with the 10 p.m. local news. He's nice and safe and predictable and therefore boring as hell, which doesn't appeal to people who like Conan.

But I checked in on Letterman for first time in several months (I usually watch Colbert on Comedy Central) and man, is he looking old and stale these days. As bad as Leno is (and that's pretty bad), I can see why he's kicking Dave's ass right now, especially now that Dave comes off like a creepy older uncle. So yeah, if Conan's on Fox at 11:35, it could be the final nail in Dave's coffin instead of Leno's.

    by smackfu

Anyone who has any reason to watch Leno is really just interested in the first segment of the show, his monologue and his stupid newspaper jokes etc. If Conan started 30 minutes later than Leno he wouldn't be competing with Leno as much, because Conan's most interesting part of the show will be on at the same time as Jay's most boring part of the show.

I think the 11pm slot can work

    by bumlove

Conan's competition will be Simpsons re-runs (which suck and have been done to death), the news (and I think most people would rather have something better to watch), and the Daily Show. However, many fans of the Daily Show also tend to be fans of Conan, so given the events of the previous months, they may split their time between the two based on principle alone. The earlier time slot might even woo a few old farts who have trouble staying up to 11:35 to watch Leno. By the time the Leno and Letterman shows start at 11:35, Conan will be interviewing his guests, and his interviews are pretty good, whereas Leno and Letterman's monologues tend to suck.
