HBO Sets
TRUE BLOOD's Season 3 Debut...

Merrick here...
HBO has set a premiere date for TRUE BLOOD Season 3.
Pay net's vampire drama "True Blood" will begin the 12-episode run of its third season June 13. Season two, which ended Sept. 13, drew record ratings, making "True Blood" the cabler's most-watched contempo show.
So says Variety HERE. As I've previously indicated, TRUE BLOOD touches on some of the same material as the TWILIGHT stuff - but far more cleverly and less...abrasively. I'm not intricately familiar with the TWILIGHT books, so I may be wrong here, but the TRUE BLOOD universe appears to much more expansive than TWILIGHT - encompassing various fanciful creatures from mythology and lore, and a more complicated web of interconnections. You can find previous seasons of TRUE BLOOD HERE , and the Sookie Stackhouse books on which it's all based HERE. HBO was completely jerky (and more or less rude) when I was talking to them on the phone yesterday, but I still wish them all the best with both this show and THE PACIFIC. Interesting stuff.

The Sookie books were written a few years before Twilight.

    by blackmantis

Stephanie Meyer clearly stole a lot of her ideas from the Sookie Stackhouse novels, watered it down and filtered it through Mormon symbolism.

    Pretty good, but...

    by newkie brown

There was some great stuff in Season 2, like the vampire lord burning in the rooftop dawn, but it doesn't feel like there's much overall story in True Blood. Are they following the novels closely are they doing their own thing?

    by skycrapper

    There's no comparision.

  • March 16, 2010, 12:30 p.m. CST

Stephanie Myers never reasearched hardly any Vampire stories

    by skycrapper

before she wrote those books. So I don't think you can say she "stole" anything. She just wrote some god awful crap.

  • March 16, 2010, 12:33 p.m. CST

    No

    by frozen01

I've read all of the Sookie Stackhouse books except the one still in hardcover (and watched both seasons of True Blood), and I've read all four Twilight books (don't ask). The only similarities between True Blood and Twilight are: 1) the lead female is human, the lead male is a vampire, and they are in a relationship and 2) there are werewolves in both (True Blood is filled with all sorts of supernatural creatures, though; Twilight only has vampires and werewolves).
Other than that, the two aren't even comparable.

I didn't have an interest in this show until my wife showed me season 1 and good golly enough skin and sex to make cinemax go "wha...". Just to see a naked Anna Paquin blasts this far past Twilight...

They are doing their own thing, though the plots are loosely based on the books. But seriously, the "vampire lord" subplot was only one small part of season 2. Did you miss the whole pagan god thing?

according to my sis-in-law who's read the books, season 1 is pretty much the whole first book. so i'm guessing this may be a pattern and each season will reflect each book. i dont think there's an overall arc like Lost here, i've seen both seasons and i get the Buffy vibe from this. so it seems to be contained single season stories but with some elements spilling over, especially the cliffhangers. i just hope that teenage redhead vampire finally gets some nude scenes this season, she's fucking gorgeous and tasty.

If only this show was as transgressive, demented, provocative, nuanced and just plain, cooly atmospheric as its opening credits, it could potentially have been a cult classic. As it now sits, it's literally just a tarted up version of the most superficial aspects of the Whedon-o-verse.

Vampire novels, whether it's Anne Rice, the TruBlood chick

    by V'Shael

or Twilight, they are all written by grown up dried out versions of the tweeny girls who moisten up at the thought of 900 years of abusive boyfriends.
That said, at least the Tru Blood series has naked Rogue a lot, and apparently has deviated from the books into actual "plot" territory.
If only they could have convinced Michelle Forbes to take part in some of those nude orgy scenes.

it's not important what the TWILIGHT books say

    by frg10

it's important what the Twilight movies say. And they say $20+ million budgeted SHIT of unheard unseen proportions!!!!! Why for the God sake anybody would mention twilight movies in the article about True blood?! The difference is like comparing Taxi Driver to Alone in the Dark!!!! The saddest part is that Pattison "I have no balls" dude doesn't know that his carrer started and will end with Twilight Shit. Plus, there are some rules in life: you don't fuck your sister, you always worship your parents and you NEVER EVER PAINT FAKE ABS ON SKINY DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I admit: I dig the Sookie Stackhouse books

    by David Cloverfield

they're best in audiobook format - Sookie's narration with ridicolously thick southern accent is hillarious. In the books we've met all kinds of fucked up creatures, and - minor spoiler - they're hinting at a coming civil war thanks to the US policy of accepting supernatural refugees from all over the world, which doesn't sit well with extremists. I don't think they're anything like the Twighlight or Ann Rice books.

    Newkie Brown

    by Auriellis

They are following the books somewhat. The books are told first person narrative from Sookie's point of view. Essentially everything that happened following another character never happened in the books. Jason wasn't in Dallas, Maryanne never existed. Tara and Eggs were orgy people but that was a choice, not led on by the maened. The maened left the town alive. Etc..

But Godric existed by another name in the books and he did kill himself. Good stuff. There is a plot to the books although it's mostly about Sookie's revelation of her powers and her relationships. The over-arcing plots have to do with the werewolves, vampires, and other creatures and their politics. Frankly the second book/second season was one of the weakest plots so I'm looking forward to getting into the meat of Season 3, where it starts to take off.

    Book Vamps

    by PrivateIron

There were several vampire series like Sookie/Twilight years before, for example, Tanya Huff's. Then Anita Blake became the template for 80% of the shelf space in the SF/Fantasy section of bookstores; so you could not swing a dead cat without imitating some or all of them if you work in that field. Hamilton's first four books or so were actually pretty good, but they brought a million bad imitators, plus her work has sucked, not in the good way, for well over a decade now.
