The Director Of The New PARANORMAL ACTIVITY Film Could Be...

Published at:  Mar 16, 2010 11:40:08 AM CDT

Merrick here...

THIS snippet at ShockTillYouDrop says that...

Paramount Pictures is close to announcing a director for Paranormal Activity 2, slated to open on October 22. And sources tell Shock Till You Drop that Akiva Goldsman is the one closest to sitting in the director's chair.

Goldsman's extensive credits include producing I AM LEGEND, MR. & MRS. SMITH, HANCOCK, and the LOST IN SPACE movie (a few of which he wrote as well). As a scripter, he's adapted ANGELS & DEMONS, I, ROBOT, A TIME TO KILL, and...well.... he wrote BATMAN FOREVER and the infamous BATMAN & ROBIN.

If Akiva signs on to the PARANORMAL ACTIVITY follow-up, 'twould represent his first feature film directing gig - although he's recently directed eps of FRINGE and the now-defunct KINGS for television.

PA was not the great movie I was expecting.

So much good word, so little delivery of the promise. Colour me unenthused for a sequel.

    by jaylenotookmyjob

...but Akiva Goldsman must NEVER be forgiven for Batman & Robin! If possible, he needs to be forever vanished to some hellish, immaterial phantom zone for all eternity. I know B&R was 12 years ago, but such an offense to everything should never be forgiven.

One of the worst screenwriters of all time...

    by gozu

Easily. It's really between him and John Logan as for absolute worst. Also, I really liked Paranormal Activity but part of that is was because it was just a guy who decided to make a movie with his friends and no budget and managed to pull it off (arguably). I don't see why they have to reinvent the wheel. Different house, maybe a family instead of a couple, and different demon. It's not like you need some marquee name to sell this. It's "the sequel to that movie that really scared your girlfriend." There's no need to class it up. That's how you get films like "Exorcist II: The Heretic" or "Book of Shadows."

    by soup74

thats my prediction, im sticking to it. $14 million it's first week from name recognition, then thats the last we'll hear of it.maybe the studio could take a chance, and make the sequel bat shit crazy because they really dont have much to lose... but they wont.

    by skraggo

...that's fucking perfect, actually. A useless, in-name-only, studio-mandated, instantly forgettable sequel to a mediocre low budget box office surprise. Yep, "Book of Shadows" all over again. This thing DESERVES Akiva Goldsman. Wow. Akiva Motherfucking Goldsman. When is he going to team up with a Uwe Boll? Can you imagine that unholy union? That's a movie that could be weaponized and used for nefarious purposes.

I actually thought Goldsman did a good job with the Fringe episode I saw that he directed. But as the above post said, as least this cash-in-for-the-opening weekend bux-sequel will not tax the talents of a REAL director.

and completely unnecessary. If all he wanted was a happy ending, the infected Dark-Seeker woman could have been cured, and she would have escaped, to make it to sanctuary. A much better ending, because you wouldn't know how it turned out until the last 10 seconds. He's a hack.

Don't try and explain everything away. I didn't hate it like a lot of people seem to but it could have been scarier. The low budget effects and jump scares are whats going to bring in the masses of mouth breathers again. They are the ones who saw it three times opening weekend. The rest of us just got curious and couldn't help it.

    BI smell Blair Witch 2

    by le phantom

Paranormal was a small project done by nobodies that caught lightning in a bottle and made tons of money! now Hollywood of course will throw money, a name director and cast at a sequel! Bad move! Sometimes things work because they are small and cheap an personal and done by nobodies,,,Remember the success of Blair Witch? How about that ship that sank called S.S. Blair Witch 2?...The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre worked because it was cheap, gritty and made by nobodies in 16mm! It wouldn't have been the same if it were made for 30 million and filled with names!

    by le phantom

I guess I missed something, but why not let the director of the first one direct the sequel? Let him do it in the same way and style and maybe just give him a 1 million dollar budget? The film, good or bad, would be almost pure profit!

Will be made into a multi-million dollar sequel? Maybe it doesn't say that but you know its gonna come up that way. This guy doesn't know how to make a movie with a small budget. Which was what made the first one work so well. It was creative for making small things look big. This one will just be bigger, and look bigger, with CG ghosts and monsters. Fuck this.
