Quint at SXSW says people have been hung for crimes against humanity less offensive than A SERBIAN FILM!
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with another review from South By Southwest and this one is a doozy.
There came a moment a little more than half-way through A SERBIAN FILM where my jaw was literally hanging open. I had always assumed that was a figure of speech, an exaggeration of the moment of shock and sometimes I’ve feigned it when giving my friends a look during a particularly fucked up moment in a movie (which usually tend to be Japanese), but this time I realized that does happen in real life.
This moment I cannot reveal. It’s not that I don’t want to reveal a big spoiler in case you see the movie… there is a little bit of that, but the main reason is that taken out of context it will sound like shock for the sake of shock, something so offensive that it will probably make you write the movie off sight unseen.
I’m a pretty open audience member. I’ve seen some horrible shit… centipedes crawling out of an Asian lady’s vagina, animal endangerment and mutilation (thanks again to the crazy Asians and a special nod to the Italians), people taking a shit, people eating shit, people becoming shit, cocks being split, cocks being removed, cocks being jerked off until an orgasm of blood erupts from the head… There’s a lot of weird shit out there and I’ve seen much of it, usually at the Alamo Drafthouse.
I’m not saying A SERBIAN FILM takes the cake for most offensive, but I can say without any exaggeration that this film was the first in a long, long time to make me feel genuinely shocked at what I was seeing. I mean deeply disturbed kind of shock.
A SERBIAN FILM is an ugly film, not in technical quality (it’s actually quite professionally done), but in its tone and feel much the same way Paul Schrader’s films are ugly films. It’s a film that slaps you across the face and dares you to stick with it and if you do you’re either going to be fuming mad at the filmmakers for putting you through all that shit or you’re going to be moved.
Gaspar Noe, Lars Von Trier, Jon Waters and David Lynch have all made films like that and now Srdjan Spasojevic (director) and Aleksandar Radivojevic (co-writer) have joined those ranks with this allegorical tale of the state of politics and living conditions in Serbia.
Basically we follow a famous porn actor (played by Srdjan Todorovic, the Serbian Kevin Bacon according to writer Radivojevic at the Q&A) who has quit the business, taking bit roles when his family needs money. But basically he’s a family man, raising an adorable little boy with his incredibly understanding and beautiful wife.
Enter Sergej Trifunovic’s Vukmir, a charming artist in a suit and fancy house that has more money than God, apparently. He’s eccentric, but an artist and big fan of Todorovic’s Milos. Vukmir believes that pornography is art and wants to prove it by making a film with Milos and his famous ability to will an erection with zero stimulation.
Going into the movie the buzz was that this was a movie that Alamo founder Tim League described as one of the most fucked up movies he’s ever seen, so naturally I knew Vukmir wasn’t up to any good, but even with that expectation I wasn’t prepared for what happened when Milos signed on the dotted line.
There’s a little bit of Fincher’s The Game in this movie as the world starts to unravel around this guy, but unlike The Game there’s no big twist that lets us sigh with relief. Instead the movie hits us with escalating horrors that reach a boiling point at a certain point, culminating in what’s essentially a giant knife being plunged into the audience’s heart… then the movie fades back up and twists the knife one last time before going to credits.
A SERBIAN FILM isn’t torture porn, it’s not exploitation, but I’m sure it’s going to receive those labels. I’ve already heard comparisons to a piece of trash called Murder Set Pieces, which is absolutely unfair. I sat through that horrendous film and it’s miles apart from Serbian Film, which, at the end of the day, is a big proclamation about life in Serbia and how victims are controlled like puppets via their very own victimizations.
Murder Set Pieces is offensive for the sake of being offensive and is sold that way. It’s hollow, the kind of film anybody who rails against horror as a genre thinks every horror movie is.
Love it or hate it, A SERBIAN FILM is saying a lot and is extremely intelligently executed. It’s the kind of movie that grabs you by the collar and drags you through shit you’d rather not. It doesn’t allow you to be passive. You’re involved, like it or not, which is going to cause people to bail and I can’t blame them. It’s tough.
The allegory is there, but not highlighted and because it’s an Eastern European political allegory not many in the US will understand it even if they sense a deeper meaning. I know I didn’t fully grasp the concepts behind the movie… hell, I still don’t even after a very illuminating and passionate Q&A with the writers and director.
All the performances are top notch, the writing is multi-layered and suspenseful, the cinematography (on the Red camera) was extremely professional and the direction was assured, which all helped to give credence to the message behind the offensive imagery.
This film can and probably will cause protests and righteous indignation. But I can tell you this: you might be offended by this movie, but you will not be bored by it. It crosses the line like it wasn’t even there, then goes across another line that you didn’t know existed before coming to a close. You might not trust you’re in the sanest of hands and you’d probably be right, but if you do end up seeing the film it will have an impact on you. It will challenge you, it might enlighten you, or it’ll just piss you right the fuck off.
I’ve embedded the absolutely NSFW trailer below that might give you a little of the insane taste of the film. Consider yourself warned.
I seriously doubt this film will see any kind of major theatrical release, but if SALO ended up a Criterion release who knows where this film will end up? If you’re at SXSW the flick screens one more time tonight.

But I suspect I might regret it.
-
That's the impression I get anyway. This is now on my radar.
-
this movie looks amazing. i can't wait. it looks like a RESPECTABLE "disturbing film" has been made. can NOT effing wait...
and, i have ex-girlfriends who would get wet at just the trailer... -
I don't think my Aunt Dorothy will be coming with me to see this one.
-
centipedes crawling out of an Asian lady’s vagina 2:electric boogaloo
-
I've seen everything else on your list there, but the centipedes one I haven't seen. More details please.
And as for this movie, I think your review needs a BIT more info. Like, the details of the contract he has signed.
I am only guessing, but I suspect it might be something like .. he signs a contract which gives the movie maker free reign over his life, to create situations which should make boners impossible, and when those moments arrive, out jumps the camera, and they go "ACTION!" and he has to get erect.
Then the movie guys get him into progressively more and more fucking awful things, and he keeps sprouting boners on demand.
Until eventually he does something very fucked up with the wife and kid.
Something like that? -
I got no interest in putting myself through this shit. There's always going to be an audience for the shock value stuff, hipsters and geek's wear it like some kind of badge of honor. " I sat through Antichrist" or " I own Salo and Irreversable" good for you. If I want to see fucked up shit that will mess with my head for days afterwards, it's always free on the internet just waiting to blow somebody's mind. I'll pass.
-
Any comparison is based on ignorance. This is shock exploitation at its most extreme...Martyrs (which shocking) was COMPLETELY overstated by people who hadn't seen the film. Martyrs wasn't nearly as rough as people described...and the second half was far more nuanced than anything depicted here.
-
is the international title of this film everywhere I've read about it so far
so....is it retitles 'a serbian movie' for the US? (and if so...why???? isn't the word porn acceptable?) -
i will give it a look
-
just to let you know:
http://tinyurl.com/yk7sjw8 -
How about THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE? Any word on a release?
-
really want to see this
-
no they r 2 different films.
-
...fucking a newborn baby is shocking.
-
if they wouldnt put the word on the "zack and miri make a porno" posters then i'm sure they wouldnt put it on a movie like that. lol
-
I don't even think I wanna sit through the trailer again. I'm just not up for this kinda thing. And I don't care if it has some deeper meaning or if some people in the world really engage in these kind of things. I'm not a fan of being disturbed by a flick.
-
Next thing you know, baby steaks will be just for 4th July and "special" occasions.
-
You piecked two poor examples. Salo and Irreversible are two expertly made, artistic films.
-
yes I realize that now....
strange though that TWO Serbian films get made in the same year that combine porn & violence in a shocking way -
Zivot i smrt porno bande
Plot description:
Young director Marko, after several unsuccessful attempts to shoot his first feature film, makes an acquaintance with a porn director Cane and starts making films with him, showing his anger towards the society he lives in. After an argument with Cane he starts his own porn cabaret club in which socio-political shows are frequently performed. He gathers porn stars around himself. (Gay couple Johnny and Max, a transvestite Ceca, junkies Rade and Darinka and others) However, Cane's brother who is a policeman interrupts the premiere, and the press destroys them as well. Marko decides he should leave Belgrade and tour around Serbia with his crew. Shortly after, a series of arguments happen with the audiences from the villages they visited. On the way, they meet a German journalist Franc, who is fascinated with the Balkans. Franc suggests that Marko make films with authentic scenes of sex and violence for him, with volunteers - victims who do not care for their lives. The Porn gang then sees the possibility of getting their revenge on rural Serbia. -
that's the mistake I made as well: these are 2 new Serbian films that mix porn with horror
apparently they're both very good as well
strange -
I really would like to know what caused the jaw-dropping.
-
but I like movies about gladiators.
How about a damn Peter Graves obit, guys? -
Because I'm cool like that. And dark. I'm really dark. And nuanced. I like my subtlety with 2 olives, ironic, no puns. Oh did I mention I'm dark?

When you're talking about hanging a person, the past tense is "hanged." I don't know why it's that way, but it is. Sorry... I'm an editor...
-
Closest thing you can get to a snuff without breaking the law. People die in accidents, suicides, etc... and it's all on tape.
Alternatively, trawl the 4chan and stickam websites until some emo kid decides to kill themselves live on air. That seems to be getting reasonably popular now. -
Urotsukodoji. There's a lotta things going in and out of vaginas. Vaginas with teeth, tentacles and whatnot. Those crazy suppressed Japanese and their anime.
-
I have drank so much coffee to follow all this aint it cool newes that my dick jumped off and is running laps around a living room. SHIT!!!!

I have the regular R-cuts in two volumes, and a special NC-17 uncut Japanese import, and while there's a lot of sick tentacle stuff in that series, I don't think there was anything remotely like a centipede crawling out of a cooch.
-
Quint's reaction to the movie reminds me of many people's reaction (and my own) to the french movie MARTYRS. I call this "horror with a philosophy", as a reference to a line of dialogue from VIDEODROME.
-
What did you gain from watching a film like this? seriously man, issues.
-
Is very much different from "Life and death of Porn Gang", as these are two movies. Cinematography is nothing alike between those two as well as directing..
A Serbian film is completely independent movie, while the other one has been supported by Serbian cultural government..
A Serbian film is the first movie in Serbian cinematography that did not receive any help from government. The film was made exclusively from their own funds.
And they did it!!
A SERBIAN FILM - A MASTERPIECE !!
-
Thanks a lot V'Shael. ;)
-
I don't understand the hatred for this film. It's well made, makes it's point very well, great loose adaptation of a flawed but still great book, and is directed by Pier fucking Pasolini! I love it and it completely deserves its Criterion status. And Serbian Film looks great. But it's just because I want everyone to know how dark I am, right? Moron.
-
European pseudo-snuff porn gets coverage on a "cool news" site, but a documentary about Bill Hicks does not.
gotcha. -
but man does this hold no appeal for me (curiosity about what made his jaw drop aside). I love violent, gory movies (I sat through City of the Living Dead just to see a woman throw up her intestines), and I have no problem with films that use uncomfortable situations to make a grander point. I don't know, maybe because as a psychologist (and one who works largely with offenders), this stuff is too real for me. I'm constantly talking to people who have been raped, were assaulted as children, who have been violent (sexually and otherwise) with others... the idea of watching what I suspect is going to be the worst of the worst, no thanks. It still comes off as exploitative to me. One could argue that Cannibal Holocaust was making a comment on larger society and the notion of ourselves as civilized, but it doesn't stop the movie from being a big pile of shit. I never understood Faces of Death either, and despite the argument of "art," people are going to have a hard time convincing me that the 10 minute anal rape scene in Irreversible served a point at all (the extent, if not the entire scene, is unnecessary to evoke the intended emotion).
-
whinge whinge fucking whinge
-
Just wanted you guys to know.
-
I find this spurious depiction of retired porn stars wholly inaccurate. Furthermore I can will my own boner to its full 13 1/2 inches length anytime I like simply by whispering "Shazam!" Most professionals can. It's not a big deal (though my funstick is).
-
Wow, I've got to see this.
-
Please tell. Huge Hicks fan, but I'm not in the US, so the only doc I knew of was "Sane Man" (I own it on VHS... fucking VHS man....)
-
Nice ad before the violent nude snuff film trailer.
-
OF THAT SONG. Movie looks crazy too.
-
...And i hope you didnt need JettL to fluff ya

it would be very much like this. Great, boundary pushing film. And the score is one of the best electronic scores I've heard possibly since Clockwork Orange. It's like John Carpenter for the new age. Doubt even Daft Punk will top it in Tron.

I assume you mean people have been 'hanged'?
The again, given the subject matter of this film, perhaps not. -
Most of the movie is completely fake. The footage has been systematically discredited. See here: http://www.sptimes.com/News/102600/Weekend/Lifting_the_mask_from.shtml
There used to be a site that broke it down scene by scene with stills, but I can't find it. -
That shit looks right up my alley. And in that alley is a club called 'Le Club Filth'. Yes. Thank you for the heads-up on this one. And holy shit that song in the trailer hits. I want to OST for this.
-
...an animated documentary on Bill Hicks? Why aren't we hearing about this? The man even lived in Austin, for crying out loud.
Predictably, most of the stuff I've seen on this doc has come from over in England, a country that really has affection for, and the intelligence to understand, Hicks. -
It's not like I'll ever watch it, so just tell me what happens so I can die happy having never witnessed it.
-
Never going to see it, but I'm perversely curious.
-
like the music too. Him being a porn star immediately makes you want to giggle and dismiss the film, but I totally want to see this.
-
doesn't need anyone to discredit it anymore because the people who made it admitted it was all fake during the press interviews for the blu-ray release last year.
-
Although several of the "human death" scenes are obvious fakes (with Allan A. Apone, make-up and special effects artists for the film saying that about 40% of it is fake), some of the footage is genuine. Famous scenes of death from the media are included.
http://blogs.amctv.com/monsterfest/2008/05/makeup-artist-a.php
Apone says FOD's more notorious moments -- about 40% of the film -- were the result of creative low-budget wizardry. "We totally tried to preserve the reality of it," he says. "All of us who worked on it were very close friends, and we just loved the fact that people thought it was real."
But like, R. Budd Dwyer's suicide was notoriously live on TV and that was included, wasn't it? I think you can even find it on youtube...
Okay, not youtube but google returned it easily enough

I have been instructed by Waka_Flocka (who apparently IS the boss of me0 to stop "whinging" about it (whatever the fuck THAT means). However, if you're looking for more info on the Bill Hicks doc, try this link- http://tinyurl.com/ ychgoev

Scary Movie, Date Movie, Not Another Teen Movie.. making this a parody of Serbian movies, right?
-
I'm sorry but you are a prude. A man got to know his own limitations. The truth will set you free.
-
...on the story. I´m one of the people who thought that "Antichrist" was a boring, inconsistent and unplausible movie. That´s why all the bloody images didn´t move me; I felt like watching a movie by a teenager who wanted to show the world how gross and audacious he can be. Phony stuff.
If "Serbian Film" is in the same league, count me out. If it is a movie like, for instance, "Oldboy" or "Audition", I´m interested.
It´s all about the story, not about the horrifying pictures on the screen. -
Talkbackers are frequently the best reason to come to this site.
-
I'm hoping MAYBE there'll be coverage of the big screening tonight.
Good to know that AICN has us covered for all of our Twilight needs, though... -
That's how I see it, at least. It's got me intrigued, but looks like the gross out aspect will drive the movie...which annoys me.
-
...The fucked up meth-head rat bastards of Europe... Fact! I had three of them try to start a fight with me at, of all places, the fucking Eiffel Tower. Yes, we were actually ON the fucking Eiffel Tower. "You are Yankee, you in our country, we no like you. Fuck up you face." Yeah, uh, what's your country? "Serbia" Yeah, well, in the US, as well as France, we don't start fights 100 feet up the sides of National Monuments. Plus, there's a lot of fucking cops and witnesses here. (Serbs look taken aback and start edging away) ...and by the way, Milosovic was an assclown! (the stopped for a moment, but only looked confused at the term)
-
But Croatians ... have I got some stories to tell.
-
I doubt even you could bring the sexy to THIS movie. Not even the addition of Zooey Deschanel could make this palatable.
I understand all the film school analysis about this, and how it works and what it's meant to mean, but I REALLY don't think I want this in my head. So if someone could please spoil it for me, I'd be grateful. I'm still recovering from MARTYRS.
And for you guys who DO watch A SERBIAN FILM - hope it's everything you thought it would be. Looks like genius, but a little much for the Spud. -
Milosh: So, you're married?
Summer: Yeah. Crazy, huh?
**DELETED FOR THE SANITY OF OUR FRIEND AND FELLOW PROFESSIONAL BSB. THOUGH IT INVOLVES DONKEYS, CHAINSAWS, DILDOS, A PIGEON, AUNT BERU AND HER DOWNHOME COUNTRY PEACH PIE, A HUGE PILE OF WHITE VADER, A RECENTLY DISINTERRED DEAD DOG, A TUBE OF PAPRIKA PRINGLES, AND SOME CODE RED MOUNTAIN DEW...** -
NOOOOOO! You're missing the point!! "It's got me intrigued, but looks like the gross out aspect will drive the movie...which annoys me" -- it's TRANSGRESSIVE!!
I think that means the extreme sick stuff is a metaphor for life in Serbia, but I'll stop here before some film degree graduate starts up telling me HALLOWEEN is scary because I'm afraid of male rape and NOT because I'm afraid of being stabbed with a fucking big knife, which is what really scares me when I watch HALLOWEEN.
You can tell I'm not a semiotics kind of a guy... -
i thought this was from the guys who made date movie and meet the spartans.
-
The twix ad that popped up during the trailer. It was just wrong.
-
But we all know Zooey would turn the tables on any psycho Serb and make him her bitch. Inside of a minute, even. And film it for fun.
As for spoilers for this movie. Someone made a short comment above, and that seems to jive with a couple of the keywords associated with this movie. If true, then I welcome the end of the world because humanity has run its fucking course. -
Albanian. She's still cool though.
-
He has sex with a new born baby. and from a review I quote, "hrows around terms and phrases like “newborn porn” and "involuntary incest". In the trailer there is a scene of a women giving birth and IMDB lists childbirth, and death during child birth. So, what conclusion do you come to...
-
and that was a great trailer, the droning techno music really adds to the fucked up imagery

Seriously. I can stand some crazy shit, but I have limits. Not saying anything against those who do, it just simply isn't for me. It's fascinating to look at a movie like this and see the difference in what a person can or can not handle. Oh and torture porn bores me to tears. Blah blah blah.
-
Horrific, X-rated, insane.... but interesting. I'll keep an eye out for it.
-
The depiction of child sex, even in fictional form, is illegal in the UK. Even owning a copy of this movie would fall under the CP laws.
-
...of the old joke:
Why do women watch porn to the end? - Because they hope that the couple will get married. -
.... Count me out, I guess. I didn't realize....
-
It can be as transgressive, metaphorical or just plain surreal as it likes - but at child sex, I am OUT.
The New Moral Crusade starts here. I'd rather sit through Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN 2 ten times in a row than watch a baby getting fucked. No matter what the context, that's just every kind of wrong... -
My ex Media Studies teacher would have had a field day with this - all arty pretension and frequent references to Milosh's penis being used as a literal weapon in this movie, rather than being the underlying connotation to the stabbing weapon used by many slashers (yep, apparently slasher movies are metaphors for male rape - didn't know Freddy Krueger actually was wielding a hand full of dicks, did you??) - and she'd have loved it. You could probably write thesis on it at many universities in the UK and win brownie points for watching something so subversive in the name of film studies. But you know what? There's no way that scene that's described can possibly be right in any context. Sorry, just NO.
Aaaaaaaaaaaand... let the "torture porn is vile, pointless shit VS torture porn can be an extreme expression of art" argument begin. -
You mean Barack Obastard...
-
Or did they get Rob Bottin?
I loved his work in "John Carpenter's The Thing." -
Pile up all the pretentious arguments you like. There's no excuse for this. Just because it fascinates you and you can rationalize it doesn't mean you're not ill. There's a point at which making symbolic use of simluated reality cheapens the devastation of that reality, and in my opinion, this does just that.I'm not quite ready to opine that they don't have the right to make it, but it depresses me.

Serbs, Croats, et al... Here's how to tell the diff:
by jaylenotookmyjob
Serbs never go to Orthodox mass, Croats never go to Roman Catholic mass and Bosnians never go to mosque. Otherwise, no one else on Earth but them can tell the difference.
-
You thought Serbians ar nation of criminals, maniacs and ogres? You haven't seen anything yet!
-
Not transgression. Not art. Just disgusting. Could argue the point, not gonna. I despair of the day pro-quality filmmaking equipment became affordable for any sickminded fuckwit trying to "push the boundaries". See also the Toetag morons, that Murder-Set-Pieces... The Japanese though - whole different can of... centipedes. Crawling out of vaginas. Strange, repressed, sexually fucked-up bunch. Yikes.
-
and it's story, a story of people being tortured and raped, forced to eat there own shit or some one else's shit until they eventualy die, is such a moving story it must be owned. For art reasons. Totaly true,I was sooo wrong about Salo. Now Baby fucking is the new Oscar bait. No more movies of Tom Hanks or Sean Penn going " full retard" or even showing the struggles of homosexuals. Nope, baby fucking. Stay classy Serbia.

but the cheap rip-off version from a couple of years ago, Mondo Cannibale was shit.

denying the dampness of water. That said, I would strongly suggest not mentioning the fucking of babies in front of a uniformed man in a country where it's legal or accepted to shoot you for any reason. See, we can argue about whether or not moral relativism is good or bad, but that makes us look like flat-out, grade-a fucking IDIOTS because that's the whole POINT of the idea. What really matters is what happens when we are held accountable by those in charge for what we have decided to portray. Striking a balance between being disgusted to the point of nausea in regard to those who would take it upon themselves to be the arbiters of what is good and evil, what is allowed or not allowed, what should or should not be shown (you know them when you see them.. you know.. like people who kill film-makers for insulting Islam) and wanting to live in a world where the raping of a newborn is ALWAYS seen as something that should not even happen, but something that should never even be portrayed, is a very.. very difficult thing to do. I wish you all the very best of luck. My best advice? Make sure you have the biggest gun, because the guy with the biggest gun can always decide what's good and evil. That's just as real a FACT as moral relativism. Both are true, both are correct. It's a bitch, aint it? I for one, will leave this one up to you all because I just personally must draw a line somewhere. These people, from what I have read, have found that line. If I was the one in charge, would I ban it? Nope. But if I ran into the guy who made it, I might nut-punch him.
-
Yes I second the nut punch!
