Here it is, the @$$Holes pick their @$$ies for the third and final day of AICN COMICS PRESENTS THE SIXTH ANNUAL @$$IE AWARDS!!!
Longer than Avatar and the Oscars combined…it’s AICN COMICS: SIXTH ANNUAL @$$IE AWARDS, where your favorite @$$Holes pick the best in comics! I’m Ambush Bug. We’re doing this year’s @$$ie Awards a little differently. Much like our highly successful Best of the Decade Lists from last month, instead of having the entire awards show happen in one day in one bulky column, we’re prolonging the magic and spreading the @$$y goodness over a three day span for much easier consumption. As always, the @$$Holes can’t agree about anything, so each reviewer picked their own @$$ie winner for each category. This is our third and final portion of our Sixth Annual @$$ie Awards. Check out the rest of our picks for comic bookdom’s finest from Day One here and Day Two here. And scroll down to see this our grand finale of what the @$$Holes have picked for the best of the best in comics in 2009!
And the categories are…

Best Western Comic
OUTLAW TERRITORY (Image Comics)
Best Zombie Comic
Max Brooks and artist Ibraim Roberson’s fantastic THE ZOMBIE SURVIVAL GUIDE: RECORDED ATTACKS (Three Rivers Press)
Stones Throw - Well, it’s not Marvel or DC. I like most Dark Horse books I read, but I can’t say I read enough this year to justify giving them the prize. Image Comics had THE WALKING DEAD and IMAGE UNITED and, uh, we’ll stop there. What do the most interesting books of the past year all have in common: ASTERIOS POLYP (Pantheon ), Crumb’s BOOK OF GENESIS ( W.W. Norton), Darwyn Cooke’s THE HUNTER (IDW Publishing), SCOTT PILGRIM (Oni Press), THE PHOTOGRAPHER (First Second Books), the newest LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN (Top Shelf Productions)? That’s right, none of them were published by any of the big four nor in pamphlets. So I’m giving this award to all the publishers who take a chance by publishing quality, long form graphic novels. Controversial, huh?
Best New Series You Aren’t Reading But Should Be
THE UNWRITTEN (DC Vertigo)
Best Horror Comic
CREEPY (Dark Horse)
Comic on the Verge of Greatness
Jonathan Hickman & Dale Eaglesham’s FANTASTIC FOUR (Marvel Comics)
Indie Jones Independent Comic of the Year
WHY I KILLED PETER Ogn (NBM Comics Lit)
A devastatingly powerful read that proves that comics can tell stories that matter and resonate.
Best Villain of the Year
Pyg (BATMAN & ROBIN, DC Comics); hopefully we’ll see more of this freaky-deek real soon.
Funniest Comic of the Year
Michael Kupperman’s TALES DESIGNED TO THRIZZLE Vol 1. (Fantagraphics Books)
Well, that’s it! Congrats to all of the winners of the coveted @$$ie Award and congratulations to yourselves for making it to the end of the column. Check out who won for Best Miniseries, Best Comic Book character, and Best Art Team here!
And check out the winners of the Best Single Moment/Single Issue, Best One Shot/ Annual/ Special, Best Cover Artist here!
Look for a pair of very special interviews tomorrow in our AICN COMICS Q&@ Column. And now, once again we will leave you to pick your own @$$ies in the Talkbacks!

The Walking Dead is one of the best series going. Period.
-
My bank account recedes further into financial retardation. Thanks a lot.

Personally, I'd have given Incredible Hercules "best ongoing" except, that "sniff" it appears to have just ended. But can't argue with Guardians, Jonah Hex, Batman and Robin and Secret Six.
Best Surprise: Avengers, The Initiative. More Osborne hijinks, a bunch of nasty losers working for the government under the "Avengers" banner...ugh...But then Taskmaster, Constrictor, Diamondback and even Tigra get some great storylines and make this my favorite Avengers-related title.
Best New Series: Have to say Batwoman because it's so well done, but I love Spider-woman as well. It's just a little slow.
Palmiotti & Gray have been my favorite writers since Daughters of the Dragon. Their "Claws" mini is also one of my ultimate favorites.
Kudos on some super choices today!

I wish I could read more of these, but I'm: 1. Too Broke To Buy 2. Reformed From Illegal Torrenting 3. Too Lazy to Go To Borders and 4. Too Self-Conscious To Manhandle Every Comic Without Purchase @ the Local Comic Shop. At least my local libraries are starting to stock more graphic novels and such.
-
Much as I love Jonah Hex, the same plot twist has been used two issues in a row, and various other times as well. Maybe that particular variation should be given a rest...
Pleease somebody tell me Hercules isn't dead? But he certainly appears to be, since no next issue of Incredible Hercules is advertised.
I assume #50 was the final issue of Ms. Marvel? Only liked it when Karla Sofen was featured, anyway. Carol Danvers is just a little too straight-arrow for my taste. -
Sad state of affairs when I have to type that one. And I think Johns is writing something to make death a bit more...permanent with the ending of Blackest Night coming. But Basically, Athena predicted that Herc would die and the last few issues has had Amodeus doing his damndest to make that not happen. The prophecy was that Cho would be Olympus' next champion. But in true mighty marvel manner, I'll bet there's going to be a Firestorm like deal where Herc and Cho are sharing the same body. Brains and brawn in one package.

I AM GROOT!

I think I'm going with Hickman and Secret warriors for Best Writer and On going. That book is building and the sotry keeps twisting. It's this hidden spy under belly of Marvel that I love. It's the book I look forward to the most.I hope the new Hawkeye/Mockingbird on-going and her W.C.A. crosses paths with Fury and his Commandoes.

I picked up the first trades of both... if these pan out... I'll try out the MArvel Cosmis stuff, although Abnett and Lanning, honestly, are like Slott for me... a little too mired in Silver Age tropes and a little light on actual 3-D non-comic book characterization. Also, they are often times too compressed. I hate it when a guy is talking like: "Oh no, a bomb, I need to diffuse it before it... ARRRGGGHH!" And then the panel is a picture of the bomb exploding. Also, they don't often work with artists I like...BUTif Chew and X-factor work out, I'll dive in
-
X-Factor is awesome. Best book on the stands each month
-
I said this earlier this week, but...It really bothered me that in Crisis on 2 Earths NO ONE mentioned that they were fighting eveil versions of themselves. You'd think that would be an important thing to take note of...
-
Best Zombie comic is and always will be Walking Dead. NARROW!
-
He asks misogynistically.
-
And I was so happy to read a great story like SPEARHEAD than I can't even be snarky today.
Really, this is the best depiction of wartime Captain America ever. -
Mostly because all my friends hate it and make fun of me for buying it. And to be honest, if it weren't for the Rictor/Shatterstar homo subplot, I'd have dropped it months ago with the stupid Future Layla storyline. And currently it's really bad, the worst it's been. At least the old trades are good.
I think "Best Rack" was covered yesterday with the Best Cover awards to Power Girl #1. -
Well, thanks for the heads up, Homer. I only got the first trade, so, we'll see. Either way, I don't mind supporting it a little bit, bot only because of the Liefeld's hilarious reaction to the homo subplot, but the fact that Peter David keeps putting little jabs in there to needle Rob. Hilarious
-
Sure it's a rip off of Days of Future Past, but I think her personality helps set it slightly apart.
Kind of like what if Kitty Pryde and Wolverine has senses of humor — and wanted to bone each other.
I also appreciate how David had a plan for this 50 some odd issues ago, when Layla had preminitions abouther and MAdrox being the same age one day. Made me go WTF? How? -
but did! Ladies and gentleman I give you the final years and years and years late issue of... PLANETARY. I thank you.
-
Consult the latest issue. It's a perfect example of what makes the book so fun.Maybe if Strong Guy hadn't gotten that hair cut, I would think differently.
-
seriously? o.k. here is the thing, i'm guessing that was said with tongue firmly planted it cheek, but i've had this rant about tiger boiling inside me and i might as well get it off my chest here.
tiger woods is an asshole of epic proportions and deserves all the shit thrown his way. "but i just want to see him play golf" i hear you say? well, here are a few things to consider. worshiping tiger woods ability to hit a golf ball is not going to put any money in your pocket. tiger isn't going to pay your rent, he isn't going to give you a ride to the airport. in fact, i'm pretty sure tiger wouldn't walk across the street to piss on you if you were on fire.
so why on EARTH anyone would want to support this guy, in any way, shape, or form is beyond me. you like watching him play golf? fine, your time is yours to waste. do what you want. but bear in mind you are basically excusing a guy, who obviously doesn't give a fuck about his wife, his kids, his side pieces of ass, and sure as shit doesn't give a fuck about you. just something to think about next time you cheer as this asshole chips in for a birdie.
*exhale* ok sorry about that, like i said... i had to get that off my chest. i feel better now. lets get back to talking about the funny books again, and forget all about how forgiving any athlete, any transgressing, as long as they say "i'm sorry" is costing america a little bit of it's soul, a piece at a time. -
but the Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy books really are that good. I was hoping their writers would get a nod at the end of the year.
-
Thats because those first few trades are incredible. I'm talking amazing. X-Factor, for its first 25 issues or so, was arguably the best book on the stands by any company. Yep, I said it. Peter David at his absolute best, which is up there with anyone who has ever written comics......WHEN hes at his best. Unfortunately, Marvel did what they always do: fucked with him and forced some crossover on him that he didnt want. He immediately went in the tank (just like he has EVERY single other time Marvel editorial has done this, fucking DUH!! HEY EDITORIAL, it didnt work the first 37 times you did it, did you really think it would work now??) and the book went to shit. To say nothing of the now-legendarily infamous Larry Stroman Incident. Now we get a bunch of colorful, tomato can future mutants that no one cares about, acting out "future mutant cliches" that we have all seen a million times before. I truly dont get the hype about this book recently, best book on the shelves?? Are you high?? Oh, and Mr. David, if your reading this: Madrox was one of the best mini's I've ever read in my life. Thank you, sir.
-
Nova/GOTG= The Bomb Yo. Come to the dark side! Everyone is just going to harrass you every week til you read them and admit that they are the Brooklyn Decker of comics. Do it.
-
That statement is epic in its complete wrongness. Theres a book they put out every month called Walking Dead. Look into it, chief.

"Best Villain of the Year" was Gail Simone's "Junior"...
by burnhollywood
...From her SECRET SIX series.
Pyg was just a Joker retread with a funny mask. Junior was a beautiful girl that horrifically maimed herself to mimic her rapist father and freakish brother, Ragdoll, then launched a West Coast criminal organization she ran from within a wooden box with a phone and notepad. Ripped a hooker's head off for interrupting her phone call, tore a priest to pieces in his own confessional booth, and bragged about forcing her victims to have sex with one another before she killed them.
She'd eat Pyg for breakfast. Hope she's still out there somewhere... -
...Star Trek license. I love 'em for that. I'd still say Vertigo is kicking the ass of all other publishers if you don't read traditional super hero books. And I mean kicking it for miles and miles down a dark, deserted road with strange eyes staring at you from the edges where an oddly "alive" fog clings ominously. On the super hero front, I gotta say I agree with the greatness of Secret Six. Plus, it's got nice stuffs to look at.The Boys! Nice! Wouldn't have expected anyone to claim that one. I totally agree with MA about Herogasm, too. It mattered to me way more than I was expecting. Haven't tried Questionable Content, but it very much looks like "my kinda thing". Hearing about anything new and interesting is half of why I read your columns. Good job guys.

I wouldn't exclude the Blackest Night three-issue mini from this year's Secret Six. For one thing, it was more a Suicide Squad mini, and putting Ostrander and Simone together is always a guaranteed. Yeah, it's a slugfest, but sometimes you just want to sit back and watch three teams slug it out. The Bronze Tiger/Catman fight alone was worth the price of admission. Bane vs. Nightshade, another.
There were a few flaws, sure. The promised "Let's emotionally crack Deadshot" never materialized, and there was some sloppy work on the Homicide Squad (who the hell is "Angel Jones"?). But the Squad has always been about fighting zombies and reanimated teammates. Check out their second go-round with the Jihad way back, and #50 of the original Ostrander Suicide Squad.
Also, honestly, I'm getting a little bored with the "one of the Six betrays the others" and we're getting that again with the current storyline. Yeah, these people might not be friends and loyal do-anything teammates, but I'm not buying Bane sacrificing Alice in the most recent issue, or his concern about Ragdoll's sex life (or Alice's, given he was just willing to let her die). The characterization where they all try to kill each other, and then shrug and go back to working as a team, and then try to kill each other again... Simone needs a new schtick there. At least the BNight episodes gave us them working as a team. -
Power Girl owns this award. Always has, always will.
-
*SPOILAGE ALERT*Sleazy, Kick Ass gets Skooled Home Style at the Home Town Buffet.*END SPOILED ROTTEN ALERT*I'm sorry that I spoiled it for those of you who haven't read it either.
-
I did 3-4 issues of it and it just seemed really lame and boring. The art was terrible as well. NOW Chew on the other hand, is amazing. Same with Air.
-
Jean-Pierre Jeunet directed movie, you know the guy who did Alien: Resurrection.
-
But what the fuck about Joe Kelly's Bad Dog? Phil Hester's Golly as well? Golly is an awesome comic.
-
JMS and Weston have both said it.
-
Maybe Grayson will get to stay on as Batman too. If we can have more than one Flash, Green Lantern, etc.... Why not more than one Batman? Hell, have Dick wear the yellow oval around his Bat symbol, so we can tell them apart...
-
Having John Ostrander write his Suicide Squad characters again was a lot better than the repetitive zombie appearances in the other DC titles.
-
is why Radical are still around? Good titles, yes. Sales, no. Can anyone say "Nick Simmons"? A simple Google search reveals them as douche-bags, especially Levine who seems to be auditioning for a role in the remake of 'The Illustrated Man.' Ambush Bug, I'm ashamed of you, but you gotta make a buck, right?
