Soon after Betty White’s commercial for Snickers aired during the Super Bowl, the Internet started twittering that White should host “Saturday Night Live.”

NEW YORK, NY - March 11, 2010 - Legendary and multiple Emmy Award winner Betty White will take her long-anticipated turn at hosting NBC's "Saturday Night Live" on May 8. White will make her first appearance in Studio 8H.
The six-time Emmy winner and cultural icon will host "SNL" for the first time in her illustrious seven-decade-long career. White is best known for her performance as Rose Nylund on NBC's "The Golden Girls," the beloved comedy series that aired from 1985 to 1992. Previously, she co-starred as Sue Ann Nivens in the classic comedy series "The Mary Tyler Moore Show."
In January, White was the proud recipient of the 2010 SAG Lifetime Achievement Award. White appeared in the 2009 romantic-comedy feature film "The Proposal," alongside Ryan Reynolds and Oscar winner Sandra Bullock, and can be seen again this fall in the film "You Again," starring Kristin Bell.
"I can't think of a better way to spend Mother's Day weekend than with Betty White ” said Lorne Michaels, Creator and Executive Producer of SNL.
"Saturday Night Live" is from SNL Studios in association with Broadway Video. The creator and executive producer is Lorne Michaels. Steve Higgins and Marci Klein are producers. Ken Aymong is supervising producer. Seth Meyers is head writer. Don Roy King directs.
Word is the Mother’s Day show is also expected to feature a number of past female cast members, among them Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.

I wish they would do stuff like this more often. As someone said above, why not Bruce Campbell? There are so many funny, talented professionals out there and yet SNL keeps offering hosting gigs to hopeless flavor-of-the-month types who have no business being there and add nothing. Yay for Betty White!

Not (usually) a crazy fanboy, but I totally approve. Granted, this hosting gig should've happened about 25 years ago, but better late than never. Besides, Betty is far classier and has far more natural comedic talent than 95% of the current hosts - and cast even. She should do great, provided that her material is all there.
I think that I'm probably as stoked at the possibility of seeing past female cast members pop up. I'd LOVE to Ana Gasteyer appearing in a new skit - doing a Martha Stewart Mother's Day special. Really. Ana one of the greatest female SNL cast members who just, somehow, slipped through the cracks. She had a great personality & some amazingly funny characters. Everything that she needed to hit the big time, but.... she just didn't. I call it the "Dana Carvey Syndrome." Glad that Lorne hasn't forgotten about her. -

No matter who or what orchestrated this random meme/campaign, Betty White seems a 1000 times better than any unfunny, never acted a day in his life, famous athlete host, or insipid, young hot actress at the moment, cough, cough, Megan Fox/Lindsay Lohan. I hope Betty White has the time of her life! She seems like a genuine, lovely person.

to kids young enough to think that Golden Girls is what Betty White is "best known for".Title character on two sit-coms by the mid '50s, starred in "the Betty White Show" in both 1954 and 1973, recurring panelist on a dozen game shows, recurring role on Boston Legal reprising a character created in three episodes of The Practice. She was a superstar long before the Mary Tyler Moore Show was lucky enough to land her.This is all kinds of awesome and is a good sign for SNL - they did a Betty White gag on Update and apparently paid attention to the audience reaction it got.

...a mildly annoying floodgate has just been opened. I imagine facebook petitioners as a spoiled child throwing a tantrum in a toy store. SNL is the mother who gives in and buys them the toy to shut them up. The result: petitions for every conceivable dumb idea that some idiot on facebook is able to get attention over. Granted, a very minor, inconsequential problem, but still... fuckin' internet fads.

Yeah...Thats what they say...I gotta tell ya I grew up watching her on password with her husband Alan Ludden and I always thought she was hot and humourous...Just that combo alone raises her hotness factor in my opinion.
