Megadesk!! Learn What’s Ahead For THE OFFICE!!

Published at:  Mar 11, 2010 8:03:14 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Last week’s Cecelia-centric “The Office” hit the series’ second-best 18-49 score of the season, just slightly behind last fall’s wedding episode. It marked the first time “The Office” beat a new episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” in that demo, a major milestone.

This Week:

“St. Patrick’s Day”
Michael thinks he impressed Jo only to discover someone else in the office caught her eye. Meanwhile, Dwight makes trouble on Jim’s first day back from paternity leave. Andy and Erin have an interesting first date.

Next Week:

“New Leads”
When the sales staff lets Sabre’s new “sales is king” policy get to their heads, Michael hides their new, prized leads.

March 25:

“Happy Hour”
Michael gets kicked out of the bar when he whips out all the stops to impress a friend of Jim and Pam’s. Meanwhile, Andy and Erin do their best to keep their relationships under wraps. Dwight rethinks his pre-natal contract with Angela.

I liked last week's episode other than the continuing evolution of the Pam character from a sweetheart in seasons 1 through 3 to something edging towards a castrating bitch. She's not quite that bad yet but too close for comfort.

I'd say give The Office a couple more years (depending on ratings though, who knows) but I think the real reason more and more people are watching is for Dwight's antics.

The side characters are the genius of the show. Every line Kevin or Creed delivers is golden. Toby is the awesome pathetic defeated fool. Oscar really wants to try, and would be awesome if he did, but he is afraid to commit. Stanley wants to be given a reason to try, he has shown in the past that he can be the company's strongest asset if given a reason to be. Erin is wallpaper, an much better wallpaper than Pam ever was. Phylis / Angela is one of the most disfunctional and childish relationships on TV.

    by dk1138

One of the best parts of the end of the UK version was it happened after the rest of the series had aired in the shows universe, and the repercussions of what the characters saw etc. I think that'd be really cool, to see how everyone reacts when they see what Michael got up to in the earlier seasons and how their relationships could be affected by revelations on what took place in the past, hidden from everyone but the cameras

No new Fringe = higher ratings for The Office

    by chestrockwell

I think the audience for Fringe and The Office overlap. So when those two shows are on at the same time, they split viewers. When Fringe quit airing new episodes, it's audience switched to The Office, thus the higher ratings. I'm in that boat because I like them both. Grey's Anatomy's audience is totally different.

    by dk1138

I thought that was the way the show was heading, when Dunder mifflin was starting to struggle that is how they would fix it, by airing the doco. At one point I thought Jim had an idea to help the company and I figured that was it. I guess not, but it would interesting to see a final couple of episodes or the final season dealing with their newfound celebrity etc

    by inwosuxred

I always thought they would use the doc as a fallback to explain how Michael and maybe even people like Dwight were able to keep their jobs. Pressure from the production company, combined with the company fearing bad publicity for firing a "character" on TV. I also feel like Michael would be the type of person to sign up his office for a reality show about how his company/industry is dying without permission from the company, and accidentally get job security out of such a stupid action.

    DK1138 -- This. Exactly this.

    by speedbumped

I have been thinking all season that this is the fundamental problem with The Office at this point. These people have been filmed for several years now, but to what end? As far as we know, none of the footage has been aired in any medium, and therefore has no consequence. Originally it was one of the most engaging parts of the show. It allowed the actors to play with the idea of the fourth wall and break through it regularly. But how many years can they carry off this conceit without anyone ever wondering what is happening to all this footage? For that matter, why haven't any of the film crew ever been a character on the show? I can easily see Kelly or Meredith deciding that they're going to go after the guy with the boom mic or something. I'm glad other people are thinking about this element of the show, because I really do believe that exploring facets of it could be a pretty organic way of injecting some fresh life into the show.

    Evil Pam & Jim

    by detectivemills82

This is my favorite superhero series. We have Good Pam and Jim from seasons 1-3. Pam was the nice girl in the sweaters behind the reception desk. Good Jim had the bangs, and was the average joe that the common guy could relate to.

Seasons 4-6 their bodies have been taken over by Evil Pam and Jim. There is Evil Jim who combs his hair back, hiding Good Jim's bangs. Evil Jim is angry and cocky. Evil Pam has ditched the sweaters and gained an attitude. No longer a receptionist, her goal is to be bitchy to all of those she encounters. No longer the girl next door, she will punch you in the face, give you the cold shoulder, and kick Good Pam's ass if she looks at her wrong.

Who will win in the end between Good Pam & Jim and Evil Pam & Jim? Stay tuned for season 7. Winner takes all.

    by tall_boy66

That may have been part of the gag, but it took forever. However, while I think Erin is way cute I think Andy is still the wall-punching jerk anger-maniac from when he was first introduced so I can't get invested in his happiness. He's still a bad guy. Or antagonist. Whatever. I think they're giving Ed Helms more face-time because of the Hangover but still. Anyway, can a single person name a series where the injection of a baby actually made the series BETTER? Anyone? Much like in real life, babies on TV series ruin everything.

It certainly is an interesting notion to see what would happen. To have characters such as Michael and Dwight deal with their public perceptions. Maybe Michael would realize what a tool he is capable of being upon seeing the footage and change, though I don't see Dwight ever changing. There is only so far you can take a mocumentary before it becomes stale. I am worred the Office is in danger of that (and that clip show after the holiday break had me fearing the worst, fortunately it was merely a misstep)

I have removed The Office and 24 from my DVR season pass, they are no longer worthy. I've been trying to give The Office a chance the last two seasons, but it's been a slow erosion of "the funny", and I found it more of a chore to watch then looking forward to it. Stay in The Office!

    by tstewie

I love this show and will continue to watch until it stops being funny, and maybe after that out of morbid curiosity, but it definitely is in a slump. I hate that they are trying to make a "new Jim & Pam" with Erin and Andy. Just like I hated Michael saying at the end of season four that he and Holly were basically the same thing. Grr... Still, I watch and love though not so passionately anymore. Community and Parks & Rec. have surpassed The Office in terms of what I look forward to on Thursdays (plus 30 Rock, but that shit is just solid! [thats gross what I just said]) Mainly though, I don't like how they seem to have abandoned the documentary aspect. Have Jim and Pam signed some reality show deal? If that is the case why wasn't there an episode where we saw it, that would have been good, and justified what they're doing now.

    by thejokesonus

and it's a shame. They knew appealing to female viewers was key, so they took a smart comedy about a dreary office and made it a romantic drama starring two good-looking people who for some reason found ways to not knock boots within five minutes of meeting each other. Then they changed their personalities to make them unlikeable, assholish and self-centered, under the mistaken notion that since they were "right" more often than not in the beginning, they are beyond reproach. I'm waiting for the episode where one of the other characters calls them out on their self-satisfaction. Until then, the really good comedy is found an hour before, with Community and Parks & Recreation.

They should acknowledge it at some point, because they have acknowledged the camera crew at various points during the show. And no, it doesn't stop me from enjoying the show. It's still funny, it's just straining believability. Why are you so upset about me saying this? You can like a show and still criticize it. Stop writing in all-caps and getting weirdly defensive about it. Like...really? Someone says they like a show you like. Then they make a mild criticism. And then you start casting aspersions on them, writing "WHO GIVES A SHIT," and declaring they're "too pedantic to live?" What are you, in The Office Army? Cheers, Friends... sure, Cheers didn't have a baby, but they went there for a while. Fuck it.

...why no 30 Rock update? Not trying to bust your balls, but do you post ratings and snarky comments for shows you DO like?

That had to be one of the most horribly written episodes of any show that I have ever laid eyes to. The Office is now the television comparison of a racehorse with a broken leg. There ain't no fixing this shit.

    by soylentmean

Plus Dwight remodeling Pam & Jim's place due to unsightly mold! It's a half hour sitcom folks, it's not your fuckin' life. If you don't like it don't watch. Keep it movin' keep it movin'...

    I would have called Jim's desk "Uber-Desk"

    by big jim

or, as it looks like an Olympic podium, "The Olympian". BadMrWonka, difference between The Office and Modern Family is on The Office we sometimes see the camera's reaction, whether it be nodding, or hiding around a corner or shooting through blinds to capture a private moment. When I watch Modern Family, to me, the asides are simply that - asides. They are not being followed by film crews putting together a documentary. Rather they are addressing us, the audience, directly. For Modern Family, forget about The Office; think Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Same could be said for Parks & Recreation. They may have in the beginning used the same camera tricks The Office does to portray a character within that world behind the camera. I can't remember how they did it in earlier episodes, but the more recent ones don't seem to use this conceit.

I know K.B. is a writer friend of the site, but Modern Family kicks CougarTown ass.

So is Pam still a regular on the show?

    by hucksterfinn

Now that she's on mat leave, they would have to find a bunch of arbitrary scenarios to have her drop by the office every week, or have Michael obnoxiously dropping by their house regularly.

Creed-centric episode is a bad idea

    by mrgray

Creed is best in small doses. I think if any episode focused significantly on Creed, it would actually kind of suck. He's the guy you bring in for a snappy punchline, not the anchor for an A story.

first off, I've had my name since 1999, as long as I've been coming to the site. and if you think mine is as ridiculous as a name that is too long to even exist without being broken up, referring to one whiny instance of you disagreeing with Herc, well, I can't help you there, kiddo.and way to play the "kid in the basement" card. very creative. unfortunately I'm 30, and I live in a townhouse. but that's neither here nor there.I get "mad" at the complaints about the film crew in the fictional office universe for a couple reasons. first: there truly is NO earthly reason why any crew would film these people for 6 years. I mean, come on...so that means that if they did try to force some heavy-handed, illogical ending to it (a documentary, a tv show, local celebrity, etc.) it would just be for the sake of appeasing the pedantic complainers (like yourself), at the expense of the irreverent spirit of the show.but more importantly, the more you acknowledge the film crew, the less it becomes about the characters, and becomes all high concept. the few moments where they acknowledge it more than usual (Jim telling the camera guy to duck when they were hiding in the car, drunk Pam yelling into the camera with her Dundie award, the cameraman knowing to pan to Jim so he could mouth "that's what she said" along with Michael after a particularly obvious one) those things work because they're sly, and happen infrequently. if the ending of The Office is all about the documentary crew, that would be a monumental failure. it should be about the characters, not some meta-universe where everything has to be tied up neatly with a bow on it.
honestly, if there were any realism it at all, Creed would have been in jail a long time ago, and surely no one wants THAT. he confesses to multiple felonies in the talking heads!and just for you, princess, I only used caps once in the whole post. I know using them for emphasis (which I only do because this site doesn't allow html italics) is scary for you.

    Wonka's right

    by buffywrestling

Complaining about the format is inconsiquantial [I completely spelt that wrong. I think.]

There are actual legit storyline reasons why things are not clicking this season. The format is not one of them.

Nor is "bitchy" Pam. Seriously, she's carrying something that kicked her ass from the inside for nine months. She can act a little grumpy without people calling her a bitch.

is for Angry Andy to come back. He was much funnier when he get's pissed. Bring angry Andy back, and have a subplot where he gives Erin a huge Spiderman and puts a video of it on the Youtube.

    Disagree with the documentary point

    by bass ackwards

I think maybe you guys are used to reality tv or Michael Moore styled documentaries. In the universe where this is a real documentary, this isn't an expose styled Michael Moore documentary, its observational. There are several Frontline documentaries that are filmed over many years, Murderball took 4 years, Hoopdreams was filmed over 8 years, and look at the 7-up series, which isn't continuous, but you get the idea, and that's just off the top of my head The point is, real documentaries actually do take time, obviously now that we're approaching the 7-8 year point, it is out of the norm, but on the other hand when you think about it, if you're trying to document the life of an American workplace, you'd probably have to film for a very long time to get enough worthwhile footage. I could see a documentary greenlit on the pitch that "we're going to document the life of an American office over a period of 8 years," or 10 years, or whatever. The point is mostly that if you buy into the world of the Office, there's no reason not still buy into the documentary aspect of it as well. And frankly, as someone else said above, there are things about the show's current status that are more off-putting or unbelievable than simply the length of the filming by the doc crew.

Hoop Dreams? This fictional documentary has been shooting a PAPER SUPPLY COMPANY for 7 years and doesn't have enough footage yet?come on, man. that's silly.

Depends on what they're trying to document

    by bass ackwards

Especially with the dynamics of the company continually changing, maybe their endgame keeps shifting too (back to the Hoop Dreams example, that started off being a one-month look at an inner city playground before turning into the 8-year journey it ended up being). But if you want to arbitrarily decide it's silly and get hung up on it, more power to you, I have no intention of trying to that away from you. If that's your feeling than that's your feeling. My point was only that in the realm of documentaries, it's really not that implausible.

    by badmrwonka

    worst sentence ever...
anyway, it's not arbitrary. I've pointed out specific reasons why I think resolving the documentary crew's existence is unnecessary and would detract from the show. any specific reason why it would HELP the show? it would appease very pedantic Office fans, sure. but should that be the goal of the show?
