'Everybody Went Except For Russell!!' SURVIVOR 20.5!!

Published at:  Mar 11, 2010 7:09:21 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

So much to love about “Survivor” this season. Boston Rob’s arrogance. Russell’s treachery. Coach’s madness. James’ (roid?) rage. Amanda’s borderline nakedness. Then an amazing blindside, with JT unexpectedly but wisely throwing in with Tom and Colby to oust the devious Cirie.

Will Russell learn this week that Tom found a hidden immunity idol before he did? Will the knowledge shake the boastful oilman’s confidence?

Despite increased competition from “American Idol,” “Survivor” hit an uptick last week:

    This season is epic.

Heroes aren't so heroic! Villains have decent qualities! For the broad television that is "Survivor" it really doesn't get much better.

This is almost post-modern reality TV

    by orschigh

I love that they've separated these contestants into teams based on publilc perceptions largely generated by the show's own editors over the years, and now those very perceptions are coming into question due also, in part, to that same editing process. "See what we've been doing to you, dear devoted fan? We're still doing it."

    Boston Rob vs. Russell

    by jtp8000

This is shaping up to be great. If Rob is smart he and Jerri will throw a couple of votes Parvati's way so if the others vote Russell and he pulls the II out (and votes for Rob) they still get rid of someone they don't like. Otherwise Rob will go home and Russell will rule the game

    Russel's idol

    by himbo

I'm sad that Russell hasn't found it yet. He should have snuck away at a different time, but since he was busted anyway, he should have persevered and hoped some subsequent victories gave him time to smooth over.
And I'm thrilled Cerie is gone. JT made the right move, since Amanda and James are easily swayed.
And I would posit this game IS different from the others. More merged reward/immunity challenges: leaving us time to spend with people (characters) that are already known. It gives a better show for the diplomatic component.

    I like Russell...

    by eustisclay

...he brings a lot into the game, but his search for the idol was one of the stupidest things I've seen. People are putting up the tarp, he could've snuck off or waited, but he yells at them, hey, I'm going for a walk, right down to the beach. He might as well have said hey, I'm gonna go look for the idol.

    by richier123

Russel is one of my favorites, but I can;t see him making it past the next two tribals unless the villains manage to avoid both of them. He went after that idol after everyone said DO NOT GO AFTER THE IDOL OR YOU WILL BE VOTED OFF. His only chance is to get the heroes to tribal fo4r the next 2 times so he has a chance to smooth things over. I was also surprised that JT actually switched sides! That was amazing!

    Russell and the Idol

    by ecupirate71

I think he has it. I feel that the producers would be smart to not show us if he did find it, keep us guessing at home. I think that the announcement about his walk was way to un-Russell like, that he might have been trying to get someone else to go look so he could put a target on someone else. Also, getting the idol is power, no matter what idiots like Sandra think. Russell is smart enough to manipulate a vote and get someone voted out *ahem, Rob*, by using the idol to split a vote. If he survives the next Villans Tribal Council, and the villans get immunity by beating the Zeros, he has a week to ten days to save himself and get back in everyone's good graces. Russell is way too good to pull a bonehead move with no backup plan.

    by mjbok1

The thing about Russell is on his own season he played an odd mix of the best and worst gameplay ever. He did some amazing things that no one has matched before him. However, he made a bunch of really dumb things that would have sunk any player. You put him in an all-star season and his mistakes will be magnified.

    mjbok1, my thoughts exactly

    by big jim

He was great at finding idols and being smart enough to play them. He's good at spotting potential trouble in other players and getting others to see his point of view. He even knows when to back off and not play too hard. However, his strategy of making his tribe miserable before the merge, when they need to be strong in order to win challenges and avoid tribal council, is really stupid. Last season, after merging with a 2-1 disadvantage, the only thing that saved him was the overconfidence and supreme stupidity of the other tribe. He will not have that luxury this time around.

    Russell is gone.

    by fiester

He better have that idol or else it's game over for him next time the villains hit tribal council. He's a dipshit, that's the problem. Boston Rob is in complete control and the only one of them that's actually thinking clearly and not in the grip of paranoid, narcissistic self-delusion (i.e. Russell and Coach).

    by mjbok1

Was he couldn't keep his mouth shut. Whether it was about him having the hidden idol(s), being an oilman. He also pitched the same story to multiple people verbatim. I was amazed at how good he was while at the same time being so bad at it.

Just fyi one of the extra scenes on nbc.com shows that Russell did first wait till everyone was asleep and then look for the idol at night, but it was too dark for him to find anything. So he had to take his best chance during the day. Not that that makes his timing choice any less stupid.

    by mister_eko

Not to pick a fight or anything, Herc, but I'm curious--why ban Whittiest? I've seen people say things here that are a LOT worse than "idiots." On a daily basis, in fact. Why would that warrant banning? Why not the countless others on AICN's boards who constantly berate, insult and curse at you, and at each other? Why is "idiots" considered a banning offense, when none of that is? With all due respect, it seems kind of arbitrary.

next week: I'm sure Rob is gone

    by auriellis

With Coach in Russell's corner, that will bring Jerri over. Sandra will go wherever the power is so likely Rob is gone next week. If not, he will play the bonehead move of trying to flush out the idol and wind up getting voted out himself. Either way, Rob is gone.

    Weird thing about Candace...

    by jaka

The more dirty she gets, the more stringy her hair gets, the more I recognize her. Kinda weird. Anybody surprised by James this season? I remember him being tough, but kinda chill. This season he's tough, but kind of an ass hole. I didn't post last week, so I'll take this opportunity to reiterate that Coach is the douche of the world. Really, REALLY looking forward to the Russell/Boston Rob showdown next week. Because this season, while good, hasn't completely rocked my world yet.

    Regarding the idol

    by jaka

Like Rob keeps saying, they didn't have them when he played. There's a ton of ways the idol could be used, and Rob seems pretty clueless to all of them. I actually think there's more strategy in Survivor now than there was in the early years. The social popularity contest still matters, but now everybody has 19 seasons (or so) of strategy to copy. Makes the game totally different.

B-Rob use to be the man. Fav moment of Survivor (until Russell showed up) was when he gave Lex the ole bait and switch, but Rob just doesn't compare to Russell and needs to be voted out immediately to get the message. See ya Rob and thanks for breaking down like a bitch on day 3.

    Villains Rule!

    by harrywannabe

This is only my second season watching this show (after being hooked like a crack addict to last season thanks to the awesomeness, win or lose, that is Russell Hantz!) and I'm starting to consider watching all the other seasons now just to get all the back story on the current players! Having not experienced Boston Rob till this season, I do kinda like the guy...he's gutsy and he can certainly lead when it comes to challenges. But, I have to stick with Russell *knocks on wood* when it comes to the two of them. I hope Coach sticks to his word of loyalty to Russell, but I'm taking that with a grain of salt at the moment. I don't have much of an opinion (yet) on the other Villains because they seem to (so far) be non-players. As for the "Heroes" team? I think they made a HUGE mistake by voting Tom off this week. JT should have bitten the bullet and stuck with Tom and Colby to get rid of James, but then it didn't matter because even Candace voted for Tom in the end when she was all about taking out the gimp...I mean James...as well. And I'm sorry, but I'd have voted James out not for his injury but for his attitude. He really is a complete asshole it seems. He bitched about the team not following "one voice" a few challenges ago, and then tonight when that "one voice" was literally HIS, he didn't follow through and they lost! Plus, he can say that his knee doesn't hurt all that he wants, but the fact remains that he can't even walk (comfortably) on it! How is that not an issue for upcoming challenges!? Going back to the Villains, I think Russell should try to get Tyson on his side as well. Tyson's been very quiet so far, other than telling Coach to basically man-up and quite crying...and we all know, ya gotta watch out for the quiet ones!

    by jaka

I'm pretty sure he's going to be a turncoat and work with Boston Rob to vote Russell out next week. I'm HOPING that doesn't happen, but my gut says it is. James is being an asshole, but he didn't used to that way. At least I don't remember him that way. Not at all. Maaan, I would love to watch 18 seasons in a row for the first time. lol Been an addict from season one. It's the show I've currently been watching longest in prime time.

"Dumbest bunch of 'Heroes' evah!! "

    by big jim

They should be controlling the game. They should have been the tribe who works well together as opposed to the Villains who are basically a bunch of solely self-interested players. The Heroes did work better together when it came to making a comfortable camp life. Then there's the Villains who had to rebuild their shelter 3 or 4 times. However, the Heroes lost the first immunity challenge and right away the alliances formed. Sure, they finally agreed as a group to vote out Sugar but the seeds of separate sects were sown that day. The tribe made the smart move of voting out the "weakest" player instead of voting according to alliances or post-merge strategy. But the damage was done. What was for the first few days a highly functioning and cohesive group became a disjointed tribe made up of a collection of factions. On the other side, Russell once again tried, for some reason, by hiding the machete, to demoralize and weaken his tribe. It may have worked had they not won that fancy tool kit a few days later (they did end up going to tribal council that day, or the day after he hid it). Coach will follow whoever strokes his ego and swears their loyalty, regardless of how disingenuous they may be. Coach may live by the rule that he will never lie, but he doesn't seem to appreciated that not everyone plays the same way. Russell has no intention of giving him the idol, but if he can make Coach think that, Coach will be impressed by his "loyalty" and "integrity" and "honour" as much as he's impressed by Robb's "warrior spirit". He'll flip back and forth depending on who is playing him at that particular moment. In other words, I think whoever is the last person to talk to Coach before the vote is the person who gets his vote.

    great stuff JT

    by the__natural74

JT was smart to take out Tom...he sees "leadership" of this tribe on the horizon. If James is healthy, I think he sticks with Tom & Colby, but now with Tom out of the way he gets favour with those he screwed the week before. If James' knee is as serious a problem as it appears, he'll eventually be cut if they lose another immunity challenge. Colby has proven out of touch and useless, leaving JT as the alpha male.
I was a big fan of JT's and absolutely thought he deserved his win, and to me he's proving to be the MVP so far this season. To have Cirie and Tom as notches on your belt is a big ticket in Survivor-land.
Similar to Russell last season, JT went into a merge outnumbered and instead of Stephen and him being picked off, they found the holes on the bigger tribe and eventually took advantage of Coach's nature to secure themselves. Russell worked a lot harder and relied on idols to stay alive last season, but JT could be positioning himself quite nicely come merge time as both men did before when they played.
Tyson has quietly impressed me too. Good to see he's learned from his past experience, and he's not pissing people off acting like a kid on spring break. If Coach falls for Russell's charms (and I fully expect him to), there could be a good crew forming if Coach brings Tyson and Russ has Danielle and Parv.
Good to hear from Big Jim, Jaka, and Shermdawg again this season! Good thoughts guys!

It's OK to be insulting as long as it's just a difference of opinion. However, Hercules has been clear that he won't tolerate those who repeatedly post negative comments without adding to the conversation at hand. It's one thing if two people disagree and things get heated; it's another when someone posts inflammatory and insulting comments right off the bat, with no provocation other than, I assume, the thread simply existing.

I think the medium is the message in this case.

Wiki Alert!Extensions of Man, published in 1964.[1] McLuhan proposes that media itself, not the content it carries, should be the focus of study. Beginning to think he might be gay. In his first season, he rejected Jerri's amorous advances. Now in this season, he got annoyed when sweet Sugar tried to get cozy
with him. Wut up wit dat? Or maybe he's just a bit dense. Look at the way he tried to boss Jeff around by refusing the chocolate. First he says he wants to get on with the challenge, then he decides to sit out. I loved the way Probst smacked him down cold.
