Clint Eastwood to make J Edgar Hoover flick? Hope he casts Nathan Lane.
Hey folks, Harry here... Now this... God, who even knows what a J Edgar Hoover pic would be. That J Edgar Hoover was a short, paranoid, power-hungry cross-dressing oddball that forever changed Law Enforcement for the better... well, that we know. But what would a bio-pic by Clint Eastwood hone in on. Would he leave the shots of J Edgar in his dress at home as he reads through reports? Would it focus on Hoover's obsession with Hollywood and his intense hatred for that hotbed. Honestly, I'd kill to see Clint Eastwood's J EDGAR HOOVER no matter what, but if it starred Nathan Lane - I'd cheer. Right? Giggle.

His turn as JEH was about the best thing about PUBLIC ENEMIES. Reprise!!!
-
You're fat, Harry. How does that feel?
-
because Lane likes to dress like a woman too..?
-
...human being, ever!
-
...I seem to enjoy Clint's directing (haven't seen Invictus, yet), so this sounds cool.
-
Probably too old now.
-
...than Spielberg. I say give all the projects that have been gathering dust in development hell to Clint.
-
Liddy did time though so who knows
-
Nixon was the finest film of this type ever to have been done in my opinon and hoskins was indeed brilliant. Still, Nathan Lane could do a cool job especially since a Eastwood project. One to watch..
-
...that came up with this one?
-
Hahahaha. Well, short people usually are. Just look at Tom Cruise.
-
Guy had more files, wiretaps, blackmail dossiers than anyone in history and was not afraid to use them. Could be a creepy good biopic.
-
As in star and direct. He needs a best actor Oscar before he bucket kicks. And what better genre than the one that made him famous?
-
Clint is all that is awesome. He just keeps getting better. Behind or in front of the camera. I'm getting my celebrity worship in BEFORE he dies. Unlike the Haim thread. He'll cast Phil Hoffman.
-
There's no reference to any source. Where'd it come from? It looks odd to see an article that's just Harry opining...
-
Big Cheese..giggle. J Edgar Hoover in a dress...giggle.Harden the fuck up Harry.

Will they include unfounded crap like Hoover was a crossdresser?
by palooka_boy
The only "evidence" for this is a single, unverified claim from a single unreliable witness quoted in a biography. It's just been repeated so many times that it's taken as accepted fact.
-
And it's widely known. Not just wikipedia nonsense, either. There are no known pictures of this dude in a dress, but if it talks like a tranny, walks like a tranny, and Eddie Murphy picks it up, it's a tranny.
-
The guy took it to the mob during his run and kept some actual commie conspiracies at bay. He had his moments of kickass.
-
And know their source. It's amazing what photoshop can accomplish. There are plenty of (also unproven if not more probable) claims that he was a homosexual. But a crossdresser? No. This is one of those things that the collective unconscious has come to accept as fact because it's been repeated ad nauseam by various forms of media. Just like many people think the day after the Superbowl is the most common day to report domestic abuse. There's absolutely zero reliable verification of this. Don't believe me?
http://www. straightdope.com/columns/read/2423/was-j-edgar-hoover-a-cross-dresser -
But the post stands regardless. And, to the point, a crossdresser and a tranny are two very different things.
-
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/03/08/100308fa_fact_denby Take out the spaces of course.
-
It is unsubstantiated, but I think he was such an unmitigated prick people are all too happy to accept anything negative about the guy.
There is substantial circumstantial evidence he may have been a closet homosexual however, He had a very intimate and peculiar relationship with his assistant. Oh, and then there was his hatchetman Roy Cohn. -
And nobody was moreso than Hoover. Douchebag that he was, he built the FBI into what it is. Gay? It's very possible. Roy Cohn even moreso (if Cohn wasn't gay, I'd eat my hat). But neither of these men have ever been confirmed to be gay. Then again, neither has Liberace. The whole cross-dressing thing really gets my goat though. It's just unnecessary character assassination.

What would be worse? If he was a cross-dresser or a cock-sucker
by bumlove
There's more evidence pointing to the fact that he was the latter. And really, if he did suck cocks, which he most likely did, would it really matter if he wore a dress before doing so? I say...let's call him a cock-sucker instead of a cross-dresser and set the records straight.
-
"Before my awesome vacuums were around this guy sucked harder than anybody else"-Dyson.
-
and have him climb a really tall building in a dress. Phallic symbolism. Do it Clint!
-
Then we'll know if Harry will love it. It might even be as good as The Phantom Menace!
-
I know all the stories, but I also heard it was bullshit. Anyone know the real deal?
-
They're becoming as December as Grinch reruns now.
-
No, it's not. In fact, Truman Capote pretty much confirmed that it was a rumor that he made up because he didn't like Hoover, because Hoover didn't like gay people.
-
Super Cop
-
people back then must have thought gay = transvestite. His lover was named Clyde Tolson. Great read at http://www.rotten.com/library/bio/usa/j-edgar-hoover/
-
Sounds exactly like his kind of film..

I like the Larry Cohen version with Broderick Crawford
by margot_tenenbaum
All of the best docudramas were made in the '70s. It was a golden age. Helter Skelter with Steve Railsback, the Jonestown thing with Powers Booth, All the President's Men etc.
chien_sale, most conservatives like law & order but aren't super thrilled with all-powerful federal agencies headed for decades by unelected dudes. -
If he did Hughes he can do this one.
-
If you think of J. Edgar Hoover, J. Edgar Hoover will appear and destroy us!
-
Neither mind the fact that he was gay, but the idea that he was a racist. talk about the opressed being the opresser.
-
A Hoover movie will inevitably have to span a TON of interesting 20th century history. It will be too much to take on.
Liberals hate Hoover for his unethical ways, but surely they must love the fact that he was at least POSSIBLY as gay as a chorus dancer. So will this biopic worship or deconstruct him? Or will it deconsruct his ethics but praise his gayness? -
Big ass muumuus, like Homer Simpson. It's fucking scary. Living in Austin sucks sometimes.
-
He wasn't alone. Napoleon was a short, dead dude. Apparently.
-
Vote what fucking shit movie review I will write this weekend now
-
Napoleon, while dead, I've heard was actually of average height for people of his era.
-
pretty wacky on the good stuff. How about Michael J. Fox and Tim Roth? Short but not odd in the slightest. Michael Emerson is only on this list.
-
an oddball? He was horny as hell and one hell of a military force.
-
No photos of him in a dress, but a bio I saw on him some years ago had many photos of Hoover and his close friend in matching outfits. It does raise questions to the extent of that relationship.
-
Thought I would bet money that Clint will not just make some scandalous biop, I doubt that he will make him a TOP COP..justice obsessed...Law Dog.
he will talk about the good things that he did, establishing the FBI, and his profiling and blackmailing and his general facist mentality.
Clint ALWAYS delievers! -

They should let Johnny Fever reprise his role from Clue
by rev_skarekroe
It's the only logical casting decision. They should also film an alternate ending to Ghostbusters in which Hoover is chosen as the form of the world's destruction, as suggested by Venkman.
-
..and might not have been gay, not that there's anything wrong with that. Right Liberals? There's two words that don't go together. Just go to the Straight Dope web page and look up J. Edgar Hoover (7th article down). Cecil Adams is one of the most even-handed, level-headed columnists you will read. (He only lets evidence dictate facts)

Nathan Lane, as long he's 10 times more flamboyantic than
by ricarleite2
the character he plaied on Birdcage. And the other characters are played totally serious and his sexuality is never mentioned.
-
He'll probably complain Eastwood made a film featuring a non-black Hoover...
-
It's a fact that the Hoover administration's fondness for illegal wiretaps, harassment and torture paved the way to the Patriot Act and the horrors perpetrated at Guantanamo Bay. I think your statement up top was flawed, Harry. Don't let your politics get as sloppy as your reviews.
-
..what's offensive is/was his hypocracy and vindictiveness, not the fact that he may have been one way or some other way. His personal life was non-typical to say the least, and if one can believe what some madames and dominatrices say about their most powerful/responsible clientel's tastes in sexual fantasy, and what psychologists tell us about those who crave psycho-sexual kink as being those whose public personas are such that they have to subduct them-selves until they can alleviate their controll issues sexually in some lived-out fantasy that may go way beyond the 'wifely duties' as they used to be thought of.
Wearing a red dress as a costume, or assuming some other fanatasy roleplay in addression our highly constrained and socially informed sexuality, should not be confused with how we perform our public roles. He was still one mean prick from all accounts and the record supports that if it can be measured by the degree and manner of vindictiveness it expresses. -
Actually, law enforcement pre-Hoover was rife with constitutional violations. And, granted, Hoover continued many of them. However, in many (if not most) other areas he established levels of professional that were unheard of that time. Furthermore it is generally acknowleged that federal law enforcement pre-Hoover was far more corrupt than under him. Does this excuse Hoover's own abuses? Of course not. But the fact of the matter is that, as bad as he might have been, he was far, far, better than what went before.
