Mickey Knox, The Omega Man & Julian Wells all take a look at Stallone's DETOX

Published at:  Sep 22, 1999 2:20:11 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with more on DETOX (which had been renamed THE OUTPOST, but is now apparently renamed DETOX). It seems the name change did not help the film. This seems to just be a dog. And right now I just find myself wondering, "Can it really be as BORING and BAD as they say?" One of the interesting things I've picked up in the reviews is that depending on the reviewer... they are all picking up on different reasons this movie sucks... different things that kinda work... but the words BORING and FORMULA seem to be coming up a lot. So... whatever. I'm not going to waste a lot of lobes pondering this film. It seems that it's going to spend a lot of time straightening itself out before release. Sigh... Here's The Omega Man... (P.S. there are a lot of spoilers in the second and third reviews)

Harry,

The Omega Man here (I know, Its been a while) with a quickie last man on the
planet shout out on "Detox". I just got back from yet another NRG screening.
I know Harry Lime just reviewed this movie and he was calling it "The
Outpost", I'm not sure where he got that title, the version I saw had a title
card in the print that said DETOX so I don't know if they're planning on
changing it or what, but NRG was calling it that too. Another note, this
thing is basically in the can. There was very few shots in the film that were
not final print and the soundtrack was definitely final, it was even in
surround. I'd hazard a guess that they've made some minor changes since Harry
Lime saw it about two weeks ago and now they're giving it another go-round.

On to the movie. I'm not going to discuss the plot specifics because Harry
has already done that, just some brief comments on acting and the movie in
general. First thing I want to say is BORING. Second is FORMULA. I can't
really see what they were thinking when they greenlighted this pic, it has
nothing going for it. It's very flat with a couple slow spots in the plateaus
and an ending you can see coming for miles. It's sad really, cause they do
keep you guessing for a while, but ultimately its just standard finale fare.
Not to mention this film is a colossal waste of talent. Kristopherson is
utterly wasted. Sean Patrick Flannery turns in a great performance and should
have had more screen time. Robert Patrick proves once again that he should be
getting more work. And Charles Dutton is excellent in a character role that
has no utter purpose other than that of comedic sidekick and a crappy ending.
He shouldn't even be in the movie. Not to mention, there are some major
similarities between this movie and "Alien 3", although Dutton just happens
to be in both. Finally, Stallone is back to boring old phoning it in action
stereotypes. What happened to the actor side of him? I thought he was great
in "CopLand". Well apparently actor Sly has dissappeared again. I don't know
what else will be coming out in March when this thing rears its boring head,
but I can tell you there is nothing that will make this a better film.
Hollywood, please take note. How many times do we have to tell you?
Screenplay, screenplay, screenplay.

The Omega Man signing off...

"Wawazat!!"

Then we have Julian Wells here...

On with the review... let's see... pseudonyms, pseudonyms.. how about Julian
Wells (Robert Downey, Jr in Less Than Zero) and with his current situation
and the title DETOX, it seems a perfect fit. but after viewing this movie..
they should rename it to I STILL KNOW THE URBAN LEGEND YOU SCREAMED. How
could such a great beginning turn into just another formulaic teen slasher
movie? And why would Stallone want to do a formulaic slasher movie? Once
again, I'm not good at these things but then again, this isn't a good movie.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The intro was great. We see Stallone buying a wedding ring for his fiance,
cut to the bar where we find he was once a cop and it's been a while since
he's a fed now. We find out the jist of what's going on.. all this is
interesting, great character set up, Stallone actually acts pretty well. All
the way to the death of his fiance. I kept thinking... I feel for this guy.
Sorry, but I didn't buy the 'death' of the killer at all and it didn't feel
like any surprise at all. It was so set up, you knew he was still alive. But
what got me was Stallone's acting, the pain of dealing with the death of his
fiance by the hands of this killer, when he tries to commit suicide, I kept
thinking 'Here's Martin Riggs right after the death of his wife.' DETOX was
really interesting.. up to this point. Then they turn it into this unoriginal
slasher film.

Stallone get's sent to this DETOX center out in the middle of a snow covered
mountain wilderness to 'face his fears'. It's run by cops for cops trying to
get on the wagon and deal with what drove them to drink, shoot up, etc. in
the first place. We meet the other 10 people but we never delve into their
backgrounds except for a couple folks. We are presented with what could be
possible killers at this point also, but if you were to guess, it'd probably
be one of your two obvious choices. So one by one, as if they were at Camp
Crystal lake, cops drop like flies and it's a guessing game of who did it
(eventhough you already know in your head.)

There's two differnent movies here, and a pity one of them ended and the
Scream wannabe started. If Stallone is looking for depth in his characters,
why did he choose this role? I still admit, his best work was the first 15
mins of this film, before it turns into a slasher film. I swear that even tho
temp music was used for pace and timing (which eventhough this came in at 2
hrs, seemed like longer) I could hear that familiar ch-ch-ch-ha-ha-ha of
Jason Voorhees.

Well, here's hoping Rocky 6 doesn't become such an unoriginal movie. Maybe if
I could have gotten my hands on some heroin, I would have enjoyed this more.
Back to my cell...

Hey folks, Harry here with the last of the DETOX reviews. Mickey Knox's. Folks... He really doesn't like this film. And ya know... when ya read this review you sort of get the sense that maybe this movie isn't salvagable. It might just be one of those films that for the star and the studio would best be served by sitting on a shelf or released straight to video. Of course with the money invested in this one, they need theatrical release... But... The money they'll invest in prints, advertising, not to mention the inevitable reshoots... Of course they just signed that German investment deal at Universal and got a quarter of a billion in funny money to play with... Perhaps they'll play with that. I just hope I don't have to see the movie in this state when it hits theaters. I wish them the best of luck in fixing it.

I just returned from a test screening of DETOX, the new film from director Jim Gillespie (I Know What Film You Directed Two
Summers Ago) starring Sly Stallone (I Know How Fat You Got For That Miramax Flick Two Summers Ago).

The NRG Cretin stood up and said the usual stuff about unfinished cut and rough sound, etc. These people always look so friggin'
phony and miserable.

I like Stallone a lot. I thought COPLAND what pretty badass (his best flick in years), and I admire his new career direction (more
character based stuff... no more action crap). So it saddens me to have to write a negative review for this one.

Unfortunately... DETOX falls into that latter category.

It has ambitions to be a strong character piece for Sly (in NIGHTHAWKS mode)... and he delivers a decent performance... but this
film quickly devolves into a well made version of I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST WINTER with Sly in the Jennifer Love Hewitt role.

Here's a quick plot synopsis... with some MAJOR SPOILERS so beware.

Sly is an FBI agent with a beautiful young girlfriend who he's about to propose to. It seems that there is a cop killer/serial killer on
the loose... and Sly's cliche-ridden cop buddies are busting his balls for not having caught him yet.

One of Sly's cop buddies gets offed in the opening reel with a power drill to the eyeball. (Did I mention that this flick has a slasher
flick gore quotient?) Now I've got nothin' against violence in movies... after all MY NAME IS MICKEY KNOX for chrissakes... but the
gore here is rather cartoonishly presented (yet still intense)and is likely turn the ladies away on opening night.

While Sly is at the scene of his cop buddy's murder... the filmmakers take a nod from SEVEN and have the serial killer call 'em up
on the phone... taunting them. (Did I mention that the temp track includes lots of Howard Shore's gorgeous doom ridden score from
that movie? There was also temp music from THE DEVIL'S OWN, THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, ALIEN and ALIENS. If I were
James Horner... I would demand royalties every time that brilliant "Ripley Escaping In The Drop Craft Crescendo" was used in a
trailer or temp track).

Sorry... I digress. Sly's girlfriend gets offed by the killer... and Sly rushes home to find her hanging from the ceiling with her eyes
drilled out. (Poor Dina Meyer... first impaled by one of Verhoeven's arachnids... then she gets two thankless lines of dialogue before
getting her eyeballs drilled out in this one).

Sly drifts into an alcohol drenched depression and (in the movie's coolest scene) slits his wrists with a pocket knife... sitting there
watching while the blood sprays out on the floor.

Sly's FBI buddy, played by Charles S. Dutton (remember how great he was in Alien3?), takes him off to a Cop Detox Center way up
in the remote Snow-Ridden Mountains.

The Cop Detox Center looks a lot like Jabba the Hut's palace in ROTJ. As a way of trying to get the audience to swallow this
"Ludicrous Yet Beautiful Excuse For Showy Production Design", Detox Center Prexy Kris Kristoferson(!) explains that it used to be
some sort of airforce testing center. Or something.

From here the movie quickly devolves into the umpteenth million variation on the "Ten Little Indians Trapped With A Killer In A
Remote Place While A Storm Rages" scenario.

The other miserable suicidal drunks in Jabba's palace are played by some good character actors... including Sean Patrick Flannery
(Young Indy), Robert Patrick (underrated T-1000 actor who needs to be rescued from B-movie oblivion), Tom Berenger
(remember LAST OF THE DOGMEN? Me neither. What the hell happened?), and some foreignish looking new actress who looks a
lot like the chick who smokes grass a screws Al Pacino in HEAT.

This woman is the "Platonic Love Interest Who Our Damaged Hero Must Rescue >From The Serial Killer (Who Explains his
Maddeningly Lame Plan From The Shadows) In Order To Symbolically Heal His Pain From Losing His Dead Wife/Partner/Family
Member".

Did I mention that he uses his wife's wedding ring to open a metal escape hatch in a tense moment? I love symbolism.

This is basically a February dumping ground movie. I hope that they make it better... but unless they do some massive re-writes and
re-shoots... I don't think that's gonna happen.

When will they learn that no matter how much you gussy up the dialogue and tweak with the ending... you still can't disguise a
script that has been made six thousand times already?

Imagine Entertainment is seriously slumming here. Did Ron Howard's intern submit this? Sly deserves much better. Much better
than ROCKY VI. This is not going to help Universal continue their winning streak at the box office. My advice to them is to take all
the money that they're gonna spend trying to scotch-tape this stinker together... and donate it to me. I am starting a fund to BUY
AND THEN BURN the negative to that wretched looking teen flick DRIVE ME CRAZY starring Sabrina the Teenage Bitch. I just saw
the trailer to that one and vomited.

As Kris Kristoferson says to Sly... "we're gonna detox yer ass!!".

Sorry that my rant was so long and negative. I really wanted this movie to rock.

Sadly... it did not.

Mickey Knox

From the way it looks, Stallone has two career choices at this point: (1)Fire his agent, manager, assistants, secretaries, phone answerers, and anyone else who might have been "helping" him in his acting profession lately, and take one last stab at a comeback, or (2)throw in the towel and be done with it. Infomercials are starting to look good for you now, Sly.

From everything I've heard, this movie looks like a stinker--at least in terms of character development and stuff like that. But you know, maybe the picture is salvagible. Maybe Universal could sell it as a slasher movie and let people not expect anything more. It sounds like it could be a fun stupid scary movie--but if they try to press it as an intelligent, Seven-ish thriller, it might as well just go straight to debut on UPN

Never seen such a devoted fan to Stallone and Schwarzenegger. I mean I like both guys because they have done seem decent movies, but its okay to admit when they make the bad ones as well. Anyways has there been a trailer yet for this movie, if not when can we expect it because I'm curious to see what it looks like. As far as watching it, well I might. I usually watch movies because I want to and pass my own judgement.

    by abking

I can't believe they had another screening so quick. For those who saw it, do you know what was different about DETOX/THE OUTPOST this time? I know Brian Grazer and Universal are going to keep testing this movie to audiences until they get it right, even if the movie ends up costing close to 100 million. I agree with the person that said they can sell the movie as just pure entertainment because even in all the bad reviews, people say some things about the movie is cartoony and so is the violence. I still have hope that this movie will be entertaining once March roles around. Remember, something doesn't have to be original (it's nice if you can be) in Hollyowood to be a BLOCKBUSTER. Just entertaining. At least everyone always says Sly gives a great performance.

    Some questions for ABking...

    by superman#1

Just wondering will you ever admit that Schwarzenegger or Stallone has made at least one bad movie? How long have you been a fan of these guys, and why? How old are you? And given the chance would you cast Stallone as Batman and Arnold as Superman? I ask that because you praise these guys so much, and I am really curious why that is. I mean I'm a fan of Nicolas Cage and Clint Eastwood, but I'll admit they've made a couple of bad movies, and I'll admit they are not right for every role they are rumored for.

    by madboy

Hey, let's not start an ABKing offensive here. Man's got a right to his opinion, besides - Superman#1? Nicholas Cage? When's the last time he did a good movie? But hey, what do I know. We all, I suspect, have actors who we will watch in anything, with a sense of hopefulness. For him it's Stallone, for Supe #1 it's cage and nicholson, for me it's Norton, Pacino, and (guilty pleasure) Kurt Russell. I've seen all of 'em, and man has Kurt Russell been in some SHIT. But I love the guy. So let's not get ugly over silly crap like this.

ABking hear: Stallone and Schwarzenegger's films

    by abking

I know I said this months ago, but here are some Stallone movies I think either SUCK or are just watchable: JUDGE DREDD, OVER THE TOP (SUCKED BIG TIME), STOP! OR MY MOM WILL SHOOT and RHINESTONE. I recently rented OSCAR and I think it is actually funny. Sly was funny and he gives a good perfomance. I never said I LOVED all of Stallone's movies. The movies that are Stallone classics of the 80's and early 90's are: the entire ROCKY and RAMBO series (of course), COBRA, TANGO & CASH, CLIFFHANGER, DEMOLITION MAN and THE SPECIALIST. COP LAND was a great try for Sly at doing drama and so was LOCK UP (a very underrated Sly film). DAYLIGHT and ASSASSINS are also good Sly action films but not as good as the ones I listed above. BURN HOLLYWOOD BURN was not a Sly film but I get a kick out of seeing Sly having fun with his image by being very egotistical in that movie. ANTZ was a good attempt at a family film (Sly doesn't make those). Now for Arnold Schwarzenegger. I have to admit, Arnold hasn't been his old self for a few years now. His last few films have been ok to SUCK SHIT. JINGLE ALL THE WAY was a good film for what it was, but it was a comedy so you can call it bad. BATMAN AND ROBIN (NOT an Arnold film) was SHIT, SHIT, SHIT. I dispise that film. JUNIOR is Arnold's worst film ever. Why he did that film is beyond me (well, he did pocket 15 million for it, which was the highest paycheck at that time). RAW DEAL is silly, but viewable. Arnold's last great action film was Chuck Russell's ERASER. Some people hate it that Arnold went back to 80's style fair with ERASER but who cares. It has a great score, Arnold killing over 40 people, a good action plot and Vannessa Williams. ERASER is one of Arnold's GREAT films. Arnold has made some of the GREATEST action films with: THE TERMINATOR, COMMANDO, PREDATOR, TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMNT DAY, TOTAL RECALL, ERASER and TRUE LIES. These 7 films are what makes Arnold a great action star. He also made some other good films (not as good as those 7) with: CONAN, CONAN 2, THE RUNNING MAN, RED HEAT, TWINS and KINDERGATEN COP. McTiernan's LAST ACTION HERO was good for what it was, a spoof on his action hero image. END OF DAYS will shut up naysayers once and for all. Mark my words...

    by superman#1

I have to agree with you 100% on those films you listed as Arnold's best especially both Terminator films which I think the 1st was a classic. Predator was great because we go to see Arnold use his mind as a strategist to take the Predator down. I think "Eraser" was a good film and don't see why people don't like it. "End of Days" is looking good too, but I'll wait and see, still I'll be there opening day. Stallone on the other hand was a little less successful then Arnold. I think his best films were the first 2 "Rocky" movies, 1st Rambo, and a few others. I have to admit I thought "Judge Dredd" was a fun movie, I know I'll get bashed for that but I'll admit it was fun. So I guess in a way I do agree with you on somethings. However as far as "I Am Legend" goes I think you need a dramatic actor to take this role like Mel Gibson, Nicolas Cage, or Val Kilmer. I could see all 3 of these actors take the role, but I'm not sure if Arnold can pull off that deep serious dramatic side unless he proves it in EOD.

    Superman#1: Arnold's films and COMMANDO 2

    by abking

Both TERMINATORS are amazing. PREDATOR is a masterpiece classic action/horror film. I love ERASER. It is a high octane action film with some of the best stunts ever put on film. Also great one-liners that only Arnold can deliver. END OF DAYS has been getting super great buzz and the new photos at cinescape are great. COMMANDO is also one of Arnold's best action films. It has humor and over the top action scenes (much like TRUE LIES). I want Arnold to actually make a COMMANDO 2. John Matrix was a kick ass killing machine and would do great in a well written sequel. Alyssa Milano is grown up and has a hot body. She would look good in part 2. What do you think of a COMMANDO 2?

Predator is the best suspense-action-thriller directed by McTier

    by wesley snipes

Ever. Forget Die Hard. Forget Hunt for Red October. Forget Die Hard 3 (you're probably trying to). Forget all the other shit he killed his career with. This thing has been out for almost 14 years and it hasn't even begun to feel dated, while Die Hard felt dated several years ago. Seriously, watch Predator again. The atmosphere and style just still seems so modern somehow. I don't just mean the clothes, hair, excellent effects and what not, but even the story and pacing. Just very tight and modern. And more importantly, I've never seen an action flick with more sustained tension.. amazing. The score by Alan Silvestri contributes hugely to this of course - it's also a classic (a shame it isn't available on CD legitimately!). I'd go so far as to say that this is in the top 5 best action films of all time.

Guy Pierce as Superman?? I never thought of it, but I gotta admit, what a great fuckin' idea. Huh. Anyway, it is true. Predator is, for me, the BEST fucking McTiernan movie and the Best Ah-nuld movie. OK, Special Forces guys usually aren't built like pickup trucks, but I got psat that. I fucking love that movie. And ABKing, it's good to know you're not a blind fan. But I did think Eraser sucked balls. Hey, what can I say. The guns were cool, though. I have great faith in End of Days, though, but I agree that he is NOT the guy for I Am Legend. It's should eb someone who is the everyman, just a plain Joe who is trapped in a nightmare. Val Kilmer'd be good, and he'd redeem himself after that putrid piece of grabage he was just in with Sorvino. Uck.

MadBoy and Wesley Snipes: PREDATOR RULES!!!

    by abking

MadBoy, I'm not a blind Arnold fan. He has great films and crap films, just like everyone. I have to agree with Wesley Snipes and MadBoy, PREDATOR is a masterpiece action film. The score is AMAZING, the action is SPECTACULAR and the story is WILD. I wish PREDATOR 2 never came out until now and with Arnold and McTiernan doing it. McTiernan did DIE HARD and PREDATOR super great. ERASER was a througback to old Arnold. To me, it is one KICK ASS action ride with some of the best stunts and action scenes ever put on film. END OF DAYS will most likely RULE. There is a 95% chance of greatness for EOD and 5% it could dissapoint. I don't even like saying "disappointing" with the buzz it is getting. So, what do you all think of the idea of a COMMANDO 2? I say bring back John Matrix.

    Why Predator was so good.

    by superman#1

Simply because it was a survival movie. It was a very intense movie, and it was a thriller basically. The atmosphere and mood was great, and I agree it was one of the best action movies ever. I liked the movie simply because it was about survival and using your mind on how to fight the unknown, and instincts as well. Very original movie, and I think it was one of Arnold's best.

I say what the hell - make an Aliens vs. Predator with Ah-nuld AND Sigorney. How fucking cool would that be? That'd fuckin' rock my world. And let either McTeirnen, Cameron or Besson direct it. It'd be the shit, I'm telling you.

    About Dredd and Sly's future

    by abking

SUPERMAN#1, JUDGE DREDD could have been a KICK ASS comicbook movie but it ultimatly was not. I wish it was never made so that they could make it in the new millennium. As far as Sly's future goes, I still have a feeling that DETOX/THE OUTPOST will turn out good. It has gotten 6 bad reviews (which mentioned good things about the movie) and 2 good ones. By the time next March roles around, that could all change. After that movie, Sly has GET CARTER and FORMULA ONE. Those are 3 movies I'm looking forward to.

    About Dredd and Sly's future

    by superman#1

Yeah "Judge Dredd" was a bad movie, but for some reason I kind of enjoyed it and thought it was a fun movie. I was about 15 when I saw this movie so it did have appeal. I had no prior knowledge of the comic until its release. Still it was fun. As for Sly's future, well I like the guy but I have a feeling his movie will turn out like "Fallen" in the sense of box-office. It has potential, but wasn't pulled off right. Yes they have some time to straighten out the movie, but I don't think they can do too much. At this point it may seem like an average or below avearge movie. Still I might go see it, I'd like to see the trailer and if it appeals me then I'll watch it because I have no idea what the feel and atmosphere is like. Now "End of Days" on the other hand has potential and looks good. I have more faith in EOD then "Detox/Outpost" because the trailer looked good, and it had a great feel and atmosphere. The concept doesn't seem to original but its getting my attention. I also like that movie poster where Arnold is just standing looking down at the ground. In a way it doesn't seem like a typical Arnold movie.

    Universal and Detox/The Outpost

    by abking

SUPERMAN#1, if I hear that DETOX/THE OUTPOST has gotten much better with reshoots, edits etc...and the trailer looks good or great, then I know my faith in the movie was justified all along. I think Universal will cut out most of the parts that people considered boring and cut the movie to a faster pace. The first 15 minutes are said to be GREAT by everyone (even the bad reviews) so all they have to do is reshoot some scenes and cut some others. Even if Universal makes all the right moves and fixes the movie, I know the usual people will still not like it. The violence is said to be over-the-top with the killings. It could also add good shock value to the movie.

    "time to get erased!"

Play 'Shadow Warrior' and get a tribute to 'Eraser' when you pick up the rail gun. 'Eraser' is good fun; silly at times, but I enjoyed it. Hell, I own it! Great movie to show off your home theater as well (awesome sound, even on tape). 'Commando' is my favorite Arnold movie, but I wish I knew if the film-makers were playing it straight or not. 'Predator' is a good movie, (one of Jean Claude Van Damme's best:); a friend of mine and I always imitate Bill Duke's two finest moments: him going apeshit on the jungle with the minigun (the screaming part, not the shooting part), and the "gonna have me some fun" mental breakdown. There will never be an 'Aliens vs. Predator' movie, but at least the PC game is cool. No Arnold, though.
