Christopher Nolan On SUPERMAN And BATMAN!!
Merrick here...
The Los Angeles Times chatted with Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas. While not revealing pointed details about the new BATMAN and SUPERMAN films they're orbiting, they do give us a sense of how both projects are being approached at the moment.
Regarding SUPERMAN:
“It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story,” Christopher Nolan said while sipping tea in the sleek editing suite that fills the converted garage adjacent to his Hollywood home. “And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right."
[EDIT]
The Internet flurry that included reports that, according to Thomas, might be better described as fan fiction. The dispatches revealing that the film will be called “Man of Steel” ? and feature Lex Luthor and Brainiac? Or the one about it being a period piece with something like a low-fi version of the hero?
“I don’t know where this stuff comes from,” Thomas said with a chuckle, although, as with any good poker player, it’s hard to say where the bluff starts and ends.
[EDIT]
Nolan says he has no idea who will direct the Superman film (there has been conjecture that it may be his brother and frequent collaborator, Jonathan Nolan) but his role appears to be comparable Peter Jackson with “District 9,” which was directed by newcomer Neill Blomkamp but benefited greatly from imprimatur of the “The Lord of the Rings” auteur.
Regarding the status of his new BATMAN movie, Nolan indicates that it's currently being written by brother Jonathan (MEMENTO, THE PRESTIGE, THE DARK KNIGHT) based on a story by David Goyer (who is now writing SUPERMAN). He goes on to say:
“Without getting into specifics, the key thing that makes the third film a great possibility for us is that we want to finish our story,” he said. “And in viewing it as the finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story.”
...says the L.A. Times HERE, in which Nolan re-empahsizes that he's viewing the upcoming BAT film as "an ending", and also reveals one villain we won't be seeing in the that movie.
There are many more details to be found in the article, including Nolan's assessment of whether or not Batman and Superman do (or should) co-exist in a project together & and some tidbits about INCEPTION. Be sure to CHECK IT OUT.

is AWESOME. Suck it, Nolan.
-
Nolan says--nothing. But it's a safe bet the baddies in Batman 3 will be Riddler as the main psycho genius with Catman as the morally ambiguous love interest.
-
Seriously cant wait, oh and its Mr Freeze, Nolan says will not be in the movie.
-
Don't kill important characters off. Let it go on indefinitely. I like to believe that business is carrying on per usual in gotham.
-
Then it's got to feature the Joker.
-
The Riddler and Catwoman with a small cameo from The Joker.
-
and probably not Man-bat or Poison Ivy
-
Should be the next Superman. No question.
-
...then that pretty much eliminates lesser known players like Black Mask or Mad Hatter, in all probability...unless they play secondary parts. As for taking Superman in a direction Nolan had never seen before, I for one am curious, as I have no idea what that means.
-
Batman is Arnie Grapes instead of American Psychos and now Batman lives in a Matrix. What!? Yes, my dick just exploded on my computer too. This movie as almost sweet as INGLOURIOUS BASTERD BABYZ Tarantino films right now http://tinyurl.com/yztnbwh
-
I'd still like to see him in the makeup if they ever reboot or make an alternate universe Batman flick.
-
He'll never get to make that Batman vs Superman movie now.
-
...while Powers Boothe is still able to play Batman.
-
Finishing off the character arch of Batman. I don't think that means the Joker. Remember Batman is now on the run, an outlaw. I think the villain/villain's will exploit his new status to their advantage. In the end Batman will redeem himself. Batman Redeemed. You heard it here first.
-
for a promise that the Joker will be in Batman 3 so they can finish the story. I'm serious -- the universe can have the little fucker. As long as I gets me more Joker!
P.S. My wife doesn't know about this yet, so please keep this between us. -
I hope they at least consider Brandon Routh again. His performance in Returns was excellent, it was the direction and story that let him down. I'd love to see what he could do with a story with a bit more meat to it
-
The rumors are that the reason Nolan hasn't signed on to direct Bats 3 yet, is it will be a package deal. He wants his brother Jonathon to get the directing gig for Superman. Warner Brothers is a little wary of giving a massive franchise to a guy who has never directed. But Chris Nolan has the clout of the money TDK made. I'm assuming once they have two scripts in hand, they'll get the deals inked.
-
You used your top villain in TDK and the guy who won an Oscar playing him is croaked. I just can't see the final, "story-finishing" chapter having an antagonist like the Riddler, Gypsy Moth or other such lame Bat-villains and Arnie and Halley put the stink on Mr. Freeze and Catwoman, respectively, ever being used again.
-
hamm as supes set in the 40's /50's Please ! Ian Mcshane as Luthor..Carla Gugino as Louise
-
I'm with you. They said the new film with stand on its own. They didn't say it was 100% reboot.Let's say you keep Routh. You're not telling the audience the previous film never existed. You just forward a few years, ignore the kid, and tell a different story. In fact, I'd also like to keep the visual look of Singer's Superman film.
-
will he have a constant five o'clock shadow, smoke like a fiend, and drink bourbon at midday meetings in the Daily Planet? Because I can't shake Don Draper from my mind.
-
Also Thelma.
-
to getting cast as Jimmy Olsen in the Superman reboot.

If the Joker Comers back they should cast the Crazy Guy for Rev

Not that it would ever get made, but I think the way you top TDR is to contrast. Joker was just chaos. The Nolan-verse is serious, dark and gritty, so no supernatural villians.Imagine William H. Macy as The Riddler. No laughing. No jokes. No silly outfits. Just a truly brilliant and distubed villian who Bruce Wayne can't outsmart. He knows that Batman lied about Two Face. And he wants to unravel all the work that Batman and Gordon accomplished the in the first two films. As for The Riddler himself, imagine someone akin to the Zodiac killer.
-
Do it now.
-
Geez...who called the fucking spelling police !
-
. . . Two-Face sits bolt upright and flees as the paramedics work on him. Why on Earth they "killed" him is beyond me . . .
-
The Joker as a big player in the third, if at all. I think it would be too big a change after Ledgers performance and Nolan has never been one to linger on one theme. The first one was about fear and finding himself, the second was about order and chaos, i think the third will follow a theme too, maybe something like redemption. If there is a part for the Joker, i can't see it being any more involved than the Scarecrows in TDK
-
would be interesting if the film is about if he can he give up being batman.
-
A good fit would be Charlie Hunnan from TV's 'Sons of Anarchy'
-
WB will continue to make Batman films just as they've always done. They won't start over. They'll just continue the way Batman Forever continued Batman Returns.
-
Older more serious supes and since the LOST cast will be out of work, Terry O'Quinn as President Luthor!!
-
FTW.
-
oops
-
Why would anyone want to follow Heath Ledger? That's some huge shoes to fill. Audiences won't be fully immersed into the story — they'll be subconsciously comparing perfomances of his Joker to the new Joker. There are so many other great villians in Batman's rogues gallery that could be tapped. One of the memes going around the net is the idea of Michael Emerson as the Riddler — that actually would be awesome. Probably won't happen but it could work. Oh well, I'm happy to hear Mr. Freeze won't be in it.
-
facial structure is the same..
-
Is most of the villains just seem kind of campy. That said, I would not have guessed the Joker would have played so well, but Heath Ledger was incredible. But a woman in a cat suit? An overweight penguin? A guy who tells riddles and wears "?'s" on his outfit? A junkie wrestler? Somebody who goes uber-PETA, but for plants????? Most of that is not compelling. However, if played right, something like the Riddler MIGHT be great. Dr. Freeze could be great. But a lot of the villains would (and kinda have) just not fit in a movie, particularly a series like Nolan has made. Honestly, the villains in Batman I find the most convincing are the ones he's already used like Ra's al Ghul, Scarecrow, the Joker, and Two-Face. You know, normal people or people who have a realistic backstory a/o motivation, and aside from Mr. Freeze's uber-science freeze technology grounded in realistic science (and I can forgive that because he's a great character, but Poison Ivy's too much fantasy-powered, Catwoman is lame, the Penguin just never did it for me, etc.). Some seem a bit too far out there for me to really buy sometimes. So I hope he sticks with realism.-Cheers
-
Somebody get that William H. Macy idea to Nolan, STAT. Utterly brilliant.
-
I hae to agree with you, that type of Riddler would fit in nicely with Nolans Batman. Batman is always at his most interesting when he's up against someone that is on a par, or more intelligent than him. One character i'd like to see is Hush. Bruce Wayne mirror image. A man just as intelligent and charismatic but without the morality. It's a shame they used the finders keepers line in begins.
-
Whether he's in Arkham, Blackgate, or wherever, I can't imagine the staff would let him where his "warpaint" in the cell, so a cameo by an unknown actor with scars on his face should be incidental.
-
I'm guessing that, the way Nolan sees it, Bruce Wayne's alter ego exists for a singular purpose, i.e. to right was is wrong with Gotham City. After achieving his goal he'll then leave it in the very capable hands of Comm. Gordon and his posse. I'd love to see Bruce reveal his secret identity to Gordon and retire the Batman. It would be something we've never seen in any superhero film before and would be a fitting finish to an excellent trilogy.
-
will need to be introduced after Nolan is done with his (reality based) version of the character. I don't think DC Entertainment (especially Geoff Johns) is going to be content with individual superhero movies and not plan a Justice League of America movie. Bring on Darkseid and the New Gods!!!
-
I thought so at first. But think of this: the Joker has been incarcerated for several years, locked way in a dim, high-security cell in Arkham Asylum. He's been changed. The next person who plays the Joker takes on this weight, adds it to his performance, and you have a different Joker. I think you'd have to play it different (as Ledger did from Nicholson), and use the story to alter the character.
-
Damn fine director!! Never stepped wrong once, regardless of what the deluded anti-TDK say.
-
It's been done. Let's move on there are so many other great villains to choose from.
-
Batman will only exist as long as he's needed. So either he's no longer needed because Gotham has a white knight in someone else OR its the much darker depressing idea that he'll be doing this job till he's dead.
-
"I'm very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we've done with the characters," Nolan said. "My brother [Jonah] has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these thing don't go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we're telling. And it hearkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That's what we do."
-
That's the worst idea. Simultaneously diffuse the mystery of Joker in TDK and then shit on Ledger's memory by casting someone else. No thanks. There's only one Joker in Nolan's films. Third film should be new villian.
-
Maybe, but like I said — HUGE clown shoes to fill. I would like to think that they would honor Ledger's memory by retiring the character from this particular Bat-series. They could bring the character back with a new actor when they recast for the next trilogy.
-
...to the character, just an end to the larger arc he has been laying out through the first two films. Both BB and TDK are basically origin stories. I think this is really an origin trilogy, and the third film will end this particular story that Nolan has to tell. My guess is, we will be left with Batman no longer viewed as an outlaw/criminal, but accepted as the hero and protector of Gotham. I guarantee that WB will insist the movie ends with Batman still Batman, so that other filmmakers can come in and tell their own stories in the world Nolan and co. have created, assuming there is a demand for that.
-
Why do the movies never resemble the comics where Batman's love life is always at tier 12-13 of important things he worries about. Yet, in the movies it takes center stage. Stupid pandering to what Hollywood "thinks" women would be interested in seeing in a Batman film.
-
Should be Egghead. You know you want it.
http://tinyurl.com/ygpno9y
-
...we still haven't seen the real batcave, the "real" batmobile (as in one designed/altered to Bruce's specs, like the suit in TDK), etc. I think all Nolan is saying is that the big story he wanted to tell was "who is Batman?", and that story will be over with the 3rd film.
-
he should wait 15 years and make The Dark Knight Returns... and old ripped Christian Bale playing Batman, Joseph Gordon Leavitt as the Joker, and Superman as whoever plays him in Nolan's Superman. That would be the coolest damn Batman movie ever!
-
Now that would be creative casting
-
Go to an all new older cast. Mel Gibson as an aging angry beat up old Batman ! Hamm makes an appearance as supes, and Paul Giamatti as the penguine
-
Featuring Corey Feldman as Hush.
-
Especially with the apparent approach they're taking with Spidey. As long as shit actually happens or the plot doesn't revolve around pointy, jagged real estate, this new Superman should be pretty good.
-
For part 3 would be Hush, the Calender Man (might become too much of a sleuth film), or a darker, less flamboyant Riddler. I could also see Hugo Strange as an outsider. I would be good to see a storyline where bruce Waynes mind is being fucked with which affects the way he conducts himself as Batman causing his reputation to decline even more before the final redemption
-
This arc is perfectly set up for a redemption story. He doesn't have to die or reveal his identity, but Bruce Wayne's struggle to find his place as Batman needs to end, leaving the story at a sort of "and he has many adventures thereafter" place.
-
he loved her (he later got zapped by Darkseid's omega beams in Final Crisis). Zatanna had the hots for him and Wonder Woman as well. (Let's not leave out crazy Talia Al Ghul.)For the next film, the logical choice would be Catwoman/Selina Kyle.
-
OMG that made me lol. Anyway... I like the news about his third Batman film being an ending and "finishing of a story rather than infinitely blowing up the balloon and expanding the story". That's cool, as the second film definitely left room to tie it in to the third and wrap up the larger overall question of what Batman is to Gotham City. But I'll be more than slightly annoyed if Nolan and Bale don't take this as their opportunity to completely obliterate the balloon, either. I see no reason why there won't someday be another Batman film after this one. If said film turns out to be another reboot I will have zero interest. Superman, meh. I liked Superman Returns, but really I'm still waiting for anything that approaches the goodness of Superman 1 & 2.
-
...is a terrible idea. At least as the next film. Terrible. It will not, and should not happen. It would be about as successful as WATCHMEN, and most people would say "what the fuck?". I know it is hard for us to remember this sometimes, but the world is not filled with supernerds like us. Most audiences are just now *finally* discovering some of the psychological complexities that make Batman cool and interesting. They are not ready for, nor would they appreciate, the story of The Dark Knight Returns. Plus, it doesn't even make sense to have that be the next story told after the way TDK ended. Let's have people in Gotham start viewing Batman as the good guy again before we make Blade Runner with superheroes.
-
My grammar is appalling. Sorry guys.
-
No, they aren't ending Batman, they're ending THEIR story. Which could completely screw future Batman films if done incorrectly. This is seriously going to be Nolan's big test in my eyes. I've really liked everything he's done thus far. Don't screw the pooch on this one, dude. Please.
-
Not because the movie failed, or because he did a poor job (I don't believe either is true), but because he's synonymous with the event. Nolan(s) can't move forward with an iconic lead character (it's Big Blue, for heaven's sake) into a new look, feel or storyline with the same Superman. Everyone who saw "Returns" would be wondering where the kid is, where Bosworth is, when Spacey is gonna show up. We all know Nolan wouldn't create a "Singer-y" Superman - even if he doesn't go "all-the-way-dark" with the character like he did with Batman ... and I really believe you can't bring along Routh without bringing along some of the previous cast. Too disjointed.
-
...not really. But the idea made me laugh. Two piece suit with his belly hangin' out. Trying to fly, just make it out of the the top of the screen and then falling to the ground with a loud crash. Heh. I dig Jorge as an actor, though. I'm guessing he'll find more work after Lost.
-
There is a Mr. Freeze roller coaster. I don't think I'd want to ride it, though. http://rcdb.com/281.htm?p=364
I wonder who we'll get as a villain this time? -
And does anybody remember the uproar over Christian Bale playing Batman? I do. It was loud and long. Nolan and crew will find a suitable Superman, but it can't be Routh (as bigsexy mentioned) because of his connection to Returns.
-
It would never work without the joker.....With Ledgers joker it wouldn`t work at all.....
-
There was an uproar over Bale as Batman? I thought that casting couldn't have been any more perfect the moment I heard it. I remember immediately after seeing AMERICAN PSYCHO that my friends and I were discussing over a few beers how Bale would be a great Bond or Batman...
-
I mean, the dude is British. lol I remember people freaking out right up until the first film was released.
-
...are wrapped up tighter than the Pentagon.
-
Just to counterpoint bigsexy75, I'd go with continuity. In part. Forget Son-of-Superman, or don't even. As long as it's not "about" the son. I'd be totally fine with the same cast. I would just want a good script, good direction, and to enjoy the movie. Routh is great, and if they make a good movie people will forget about the problems with Superman Returns. Keeping the same guy for Superman will only help with character recognition and with people like me who can't stand replacements. That ALWAYS bugs me.Routh was great, just worry about the script. Tell a good story and make it interesting with a balance of plot and action and characters people have a reason to care about and they will watch it.-Cheers
-
I'm not opposed to more Joker, I just think it could go a long way towards sinking the next film. Even if the actor playing him was spectacular in the part there are still going to be comparisons to Heath Ledger, debates about his legacy, blah blah blah...
-
...in fact, I recall that "cast Bale as Batman" was something of a fanboy wet dream here at AICN back when the first Nolan film was getting announced. And when he got cast, I'm pretty AICN rejoiced to nearly "Man in Suit" levels.
-
Superman Returns was a fucking shit movie? I guess not.
-
I've thought he'd be a great replacement since the day Ledger died
-
Bale is so loved as Batman now that people don't remember the original reaction to his casting.
-
I can see that, seeing as how no British *actor* has ever successfully played an American until Bale came along. Or vice versa. But seriously, I don't remember one bad word about the Bale casting...I certainly don't think it was a "huge" backlash. Because it wasn't.
-
"Really, the guy who directed Momento?!" I remember very clearly.
-
Raping your eyeballs with ideas!
-
I love Bale and Nolan's Batman films, but it was not a universally adored choice when either of them were announced. Moving on...
-
He was great in the Hurt Locker, and I loved his turn on House, and he seems just the right mix of good actor/not yet well known that could give the Riddler a personality. The rumors like Johnny Depp for the Riddler would suck, though I've always enjopyed Depp, it's be Johnny Depp we were watching onscreen - not sure with his stardom he can truly get lost in a role anymore. And besides, we've already had two hammy, silly Riddlers in Frank Gorshin and Jim Carrey. I'd like to see a more calculating, devious Riddler, one that's brilliantly insane without being a Looney Toons character.
-
Is not the only place people discuss such things.
-
Correct. I remember Chicago Comic Con the summer that the casting was first announced: EVERYONE was excited.
-
I really hope they bring Brandon Routh back as Supes. It's promising that Nolan admired Superman Returns, which was far from a Superman IV-type failure. As for finishing the Batman story, hopefully that doesn't mean the inevitable future films have to reboot yet again.
-
Come on, you know it should happen.
-
LETTING NOLAN do his thing. I shall not question a thing he says or does. He has delivered 2 GREAT batman films(as well as countless others). The man is good, and works from a point of view of things operating in the real world.Im usre his methods require breathing room, and not being breathed on heavy-like by fanboys.Be glad, shut the fuck up, and try not to think bout BATMAN 3 for about a year.Becuase we won't hear anything about it till then Im sure.Or do you wanna end up with Spider-man 3?
-
If by "people", you mean a few gloom-and-doom douchebags who are never happy with anything, then, sure, I bet there was some of that. But a HUGE backlash is what happens when Superman has a son, or when Prof. X and Cyclops are killed, or when the script details for the McG Superman leak and it turns out Krypton never exploded and that Lex Luthor is from there, too. *THOSE* were huge backlashes.
-
since those are the two most grounded villains left. Then I would think the Joker would be pulling the Riddler's strings from behind the scenes in a minor role from Arkham.I like enderandrew's idea above for a Zodiac style serial killer played by William H Macy. If you have someone like that, what would be the ultimate riddle AND the ultimate kill? The Batman.
-
I enjoyed Routh too. Seems he's a polarizing figure to an extent here on the boards, though. I agree too, about script being the main thing. I'd bet the Kent farm, though, that there'd be a pretty loud backlash against a Nolan film that included Routh as Supes and simply forgot the whole son angle, for two reasons: critics would blast it as lazy, too-convenient storytelling, and Nolan fans would light him up for the continuity gap. Maggie G. reprised an existing character in the Nolan Batverse (whether she did that admirably is up for debate, I suppose) ... forgetting Son o' Supes would be some serious revisionist history, especially considering the fathers/sons themes of Returns.
-
Fair point. So I'll split the difference with you and say the backlash was somewhere in the middle. It was more than few gloom-and-doom douchebags, but it definitely wasn't a Prof X and Cyclops killed level.
-
Okay everybody, CHILL!!!!
-
She's too cheesy for the universe they've created. If anybody could do it it would be Nolan and Goyer, though. And I'm all for a hot Catwoman. But for some reason I just don't see her fitting in with their storytelling style. Riddler, that I can see. For sure.
-
Will be a psychotic supremely arrogant evil genius who knows he's smarter than Batman and taunts him with puzzles and in all likelihood deduces Batman's identity, etc.
As for Captain American: At least it's not Kraskinski. What a fucking joke that would have been. -
Batman Year One and The Kiliing Joke, It would be logical to do the Dark Knight Returns.
-
Fair enough. The thing is, I have a feeling that anyone who was disappointed with the Bale casting initially felt that way more because he was not *their* choice, and not so much because they thought he was a *bad* choice, although that might be what they projected. I think the problem with a lot of movie fans is exactly what Cameron touched on when discussing the AVATAR hype, and I hope we don't fall victim to it with BATMAN 3: people build up an idea of what a movie should/will be in their minds, and when the movie is different, even if it is still very good in its own way, they are invariably disappointed with the real thing.
-
who thinks when he says "charachters will be coming back, are the ones still alive, and closing the story arc??
that means scarecrow will probally be the villan again, victor zsasz escaped arkham, and we know the rules of trilogys the end normaly links to the beginning, so im guessing talia-al ghul wil be there,
oh and is ra'a al ghul really dead?? just wait and see ;)
no riddler, no joker, no mr freeze, nothing!! none of these guys i bet!! which is a shame! -
Maybe logical from the standpoint of that being another very iconic Batman story, but not logical in the least from the standpoint of Nolan's storyline. The only thing that makes it "logical" is that all you have to do is add one more word to the title of the second film.
-
bruce wayne dies, gordon and alfred try to keep the legend alive with another because batman became more than just a man, he became a symbol!
cue bond theme. -
THE ICE AGE!!!!
-
Feels right to me.
-
I think he is talking about the characters of Gordon, Alfred, Fox, etc., and the actors who play them. I certainly think Talia and/or Catwoman are likely, because with Rachel out of the way, there is room for one of the comic book love interests, and Bale himself has expressed an interest in exploring Batman's love life. All this talk of "logical" story continuation, I think bringing in Talia or Catwoman would be extremely logical. Batman's problem is he can't let a woman like Rachel get close to him, because it will (and did) put her in danger. Talia and Catwoman can take care of themselves. And Rachel loved Bruce Wayne. Talia and Catwoman are into Batman.
-
as a comic book series in the "Death Era" intended to go in that direction.
I remember the Superman Dies era very well. The excitement of losing the character. Who would help us now. Tons of wanna be superheros came crawling to surface for to fill the void, some on egos, some to manipulate, some on genuine goodwill "must fill the void and protect the people"
I was hoping that eventually the people would see that they were always capable of doing it for themselves and there would be no need for a superman- that didn't happen. He came from the heavens back to earth.
Superman cooks the meal and he washes the dishes, and it's wrong. We should wash the dishes as thanks for the him cooking the meal. -
will be INSANE. I'm guessing $200m domestic and $150m globally. WB knows this, which is why Nolan can pick practically whoever he wants as the director of Superman - and he'll pick his little bro Jonathon. And Jon Hamm and Evangeline Lilly sound spot on as Supes and Lois. Depending on how quickly they age, they'll be good for a trilogy (although Supes 2 and 3 will probably need to be shot back-to-back otherwise Hamm and Lilly will be approaching 50 and 40 respectively if they make the films three years apart).
-
The want someone in their 20s, so they can stretch the trilogy. You don't want a 50 year old Superman running around in the third flick. So please stop this casting wish refrain: it ain't going to happen. Ever.
-
That dude has some serious issues. He hasnt talked to his family for 2 years now. He is mad about something. ow can you ignore your family for that long.. Heartless fuck!
-
in an an 1930's-40's time period. Superman was forced into our time frame. He came from and he always belonged to that golden age.
-
That last movie was a fucking disgrace, but Routh is perfect.
-
Whaaaaaaa? Never happen. Not trying to poke at you General, and I genuinely like the Catwoman character, but I don't see her working in the dark gritty Gotham they've created. I'm not against seeing it. But my gut tells me it wouldn't work, particularly in a third film like this one. I do remember Bale talking about the "love interest" thing. So who knows?
-
...for nearly twenty years on my Fathers side (including him). Literally have not seen them or exchanged one single word. It's made me a better person. And I have not one bit of regret. Cool that you love your family so much. But that isn't the case for all of us.
-
Not only peoppe talked shit about Nolan when he was announced as the director of a new Batman, when his idea of rebotting the Batman franchise was announced most people spit blood in rage. Came THE DARK KNIGHT, and even though people should had know better, they were ENRAGED when it was anounced that Heath Ledger had been cast as The Joker. Literally, the vast majority of opinions was "you got to be fucking kidding me, total mistake, Nolan is crazy, Ledger is so wrong, Brokenback Batman, bla bla bla".The truth of the matter is, Nolan is smarter then 1000 typical "teh fun" AICN geeks combined. IN NOLAN YOU SHOULD TRUST, BITCHES!
-
Rickey wants to see a live action Max Fleischer version of Superman. No contemporary Superman please, the character has absolutely no relevancy in the year 2010.
-
Interesting. Because technically he was in the second film, too. I'm not sure how terribly excited I'd be about it. But it is an interesting interpretation of what they've said so far.
-
The news that Bale was named Batman was greeted pretty well at AICN.

I certainly think Talia would both be easier to pull off AND makes more sense in this particular series, but I do think Nolan and co. could make Catwoman work if they wanted to.
-
remember michael keaton!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
...glad somebody remembers all that. I remember it all very clearly (including the unhappiness about Bale), but people just love those films so much now that any of the original distaste has long been forgotten.
-
I definitely remember the Ledger casting backlash VERY well. However, I don't really remember any big backlash related to the Nolan reboot. The proposed Aronofsky version, though...people shit all over that, and rightly so. I mean, Alfred was a fucking black mechanic called "Big Al"...
-
Everytime I have seen a pic of him he is dressed so well.
I just had to put that out.
Just the tip Chris. -
First, people who can find old threads at AICN scare me. Second, I can't believe how SMALL that talkback is. Freakin' weird. That is fairly positive for current AICN standards. The site was clearly a different place just those few years ago (for the better). However, like I said, AICN is not the only place such things were discussed.
-
You never see his face, just the hints of white, green and purple. Someone can impersonate the Heath voice or you can do it digitally. Joker is the Hannibal Lector if you will.Riddler being a Zodiac Killer type has been said before and will more than likely be how they go I'd imagine.Movie ends with Batman back to hero, all major villains locked up in Arkham. We hear a voice over as a guard walks down the Arkham halls. Camera moves from feet to head and the last shot is of the guard about to open one of the cells and from behind we see the green hair underneath the guard's cap...Next trilogy can go all Arkham Asylum on us now.
-
Didn't actually read the article, did you? I quote: "Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful."
UNLIKE the comics. -
I do sincerely believe the reaction will still largely be based on the product. If Nolan has a Routh-based Superman that is pretty good, criticisms will fade. I'd like to see Routh get a shot at the sequel(?) if for no other reason than he did nothing wrong as Clark/Kal-el. You know? Any fault seems to lie on the script, director, you name it, but not in Routh. It sucks he did his job, seemed to me to do pretty well at it, may even have grown since then so he could be an even better actor in the next one, and still lose his job.Still, I see your point. I certainly would not relish coming in and being tied to the Superman's-kid baggage, especially not how Singer threw it in there. Having your Superman actor tied to that? I can see how Nolan might want to totally bypass that connection.-Cheers
-
Just like any story arch in a comic book or story, the ending they are taking about it just taking the story in the trilogy to a point that gives it some messure of closure.
They will not kill Bats, he will not quit, it will just leave the door open for the next team to take the reins of a charactor that doesn't have unresolved issues.
I don't need to see Supes and Bats in the same movie. -
Although I liked Routh in the role, I think he will be discarded for one simple reason: so as not to confuse the masses. Simple as that. Unfortunate, but that how this will play out. WB and Nolan will want a 100% clean slate.
-
But looking at nolans universe Batman cannot last indefinitely. I would be satisfied if Batman "died" as he did in DKR or if he actually kicked the bucket depending on how it's done. That way they can recast/reboot for JLA or whatever DC plans going forward. Or if he retires and then sees a blue streak in the sky and decides to investigate....
-
but all these actors playing multiple superheroes is a bit lame.
-
The guy doesn't think Batman & Superman should co-exist? Has he ever read a fucking comic in his life? Superman and Batman are World's Finest: the greatest and most well-known comic-book partnership of all time! Fucking douche. I'm not looking forward to his Superman and we'll see how his new Batman does without the Heath Ledger death-hype.
-
Exactly. All they are talking about is the end to their Batman story, not the end of the character as Batman or anything like that.
-
Than Catwoman. Fits in better too with the feel of Nolan's films.Listen, hot women in tight leather outfits is great and all, but the Bat costume only works because it's associated with fear and a bit of a gimmick that became iconic. This is just for me, but Catwoman? A cat burglar who also loves cats and dresses up as one? Good grief! The only redeeming value has been in the camp (which I could live without), and beautiful women portraying the character. Again, I can check out beautiful women without them detracting from the movies I'm watching. Talia fits into things better for me from a sheer story-telling perspective.-Cheers
-
The films have continuity of story. This isn't the James Bond franchise. Their last film should have an ending. I'll be pissed off if it doesn't.
-
...so DC/WB can move forward with Justice League. Give the fans what they want, not what you think they should want.
-
Relax, man. Nowhere does he say that they should not co-exist, only that they won't in the first Superman movie he produces. “Each serves to the internal logic of the story. They have nothing to do with each other.” All he is saying is that the Superman story he and Goyer have to tell has nothing to do with any other heroes, and he probably thinks throwing them in would only muddy the waters. Give the guy a chance to introduce modern audiences at large to the way Superman is handled in the comic these days. Someone has to wipe the slate clean, because 90% or the people out there only know the character from movies or cartoons.
-
forge thte gadgetry, just a guy who wants to save his wife and will steal and cheat to do so... plus with the ending of last film, and parable on the nature of Good vs evil would have been a great idea.
-
I lost all faith in this movie.
-
Speaking of Scarecrow, did Julian Sands provide his voice the first time the character was introduced in the animated Batman series? It seems like the voice changed a great deal when the character was seen in later episodes. imdb only lists another actor for the series, but it would make sense since J.S. was in Arachnophobia and when he uses his fear gas on someone and the victim thinks spiders are attacking, the Scarecrow mentions the person has arachnophobia and then becomes irritated at an underling for having to explain what it means.
-
Finding old articles with Google isn't that difficult.
-
I am a fan, and I DON'T want a Justice League movie. Not yet. Because I have absolutely zero evidence to suggest that Hollywood wouldn't totally fuck it up. Let Marvel crank out the Avengers movie first. If it is a success, then the road map will have been drawn. If it is a failure (from a storytelling standpoint...it will surely be a financial success), then WB will know what pitfalls to avoid. As a fan, it is MORE important to me that DC/WB take their time and introduce movie versions of their characters one at a time BEFORE throwing a big team epic at us.
-
Ledger was great. The Crow was a decent movie, however the acting was not all that great. Brandon Lee was not a great actor. I think Ledger was, and his Joker was chilling, I bought it, and outside of an Alan Moore comic it's the first time I saw his insane-yet-calculating mind combined with his brutal sense of humor in a way that made me get how he could be such a great villain. So yes, he was great. I did not like it because he died, but I thought he did a great job as a psychopath; a mean, insane, yet brilliant criminal. It was one of the most riveting performances I can remember. The only way The Crow compares is kinda/sorta the look of the white face paint, long hair, trench coat. That's only a vague aesthetic. The acting done by Ledger was, in my humble non-goth/emo opinion, great. That is just one opinion, sure, but it happens to be shared by a surprisingly large number of people, so take it as you will.-Cheers
-
Make it so!

Storytelling and character are two different things. You can be perfectly faithful to a comic book character in a film version, while still telling a story that works perfectly within that very different medium, one that has different conventions due to the format and time contraints. And in addition to continuity, comic books also have multi-issue arcs with a beginning, middle and end...similar to what Nolan is discussing here for his trilogy. I guess I am just not sure how creating a three film story arc is somehow not being true to the character of Batman, if that is what you are saying.

I bet they all masturbate about JJ Abrams and Michael Bay.
-
The studio is currently recruiting plasterers to commence set construction in sept and the release date is late 2012.
-
My dream looked like a trailer for a Batman movie with Mr. Freeze in it. There was an actor who looked like either Ben Kingsley or Ralph Fiennes, wearing round glasses. He was explaining a concept to someone off-screen, looking at or past the camera with a very sad, soft voice. He oozed sadness, and said something like, "I want to develop a cure for cancer," and there was a cut to a close-up of a shiny, smooth and possibly metallic black surface that started to be covered with frost and then the scene cut back to him saying, "that will cure a new person every day," and the image cut back to the frost continuing to cover whatever was being covered. That was all there was to the dream.
-
You're NEVER going to get a Justice League movie if WB lets people like Chris Nolan and Christian Bale dictate what should or shouldn't be included in the Batman movies. I AM a Batman fan, and that's why I want to see Superman and Robin and Batgirl and Nightwing and Oracle and every other character that is an important supporting character in the Batman mythos. If done right, these characters would fit in just fine (as always, the challenge lies with the writer). But then, you have douchers like Christian Bale (and you know he's a doucher) saying things like he'll walk if they ever introduce Robin. Obviously, he's never read Dark Victory, a story that fits perfectly within Nolan's so-called realistic Bat-verse.
Bottom line, everyone has their own opinion, but they should at least be faithful to the source material and to the fans who support it. -
because she was way more similar to Margot Kidder than Bosworth (was it Bosworth, I don't even remember). But I know she was 10 years too old and doesn't have the leading lady face that the studios want. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if she auditioned for Lois Lane and Singer liked her and found her a role.

but that bland chick (I fogot her name) that played Lois Lane was a fucking snooze. Where's the spunk and determination of Margot Kidder, or even Teri Hatcher. The Superman Returns Lois was fucking boring. Routh was a great Supes in a bad film, and he deserves another shot. Although Warner, when they announced that Nolan would godfather Superman, already said that Routh would not continue as the Man of Steel.
-
Listen, I think a JL film *should* pretty much be non-stop pants-shitting action from start to finish, which is *exactly* why I want to see most of those characters introduced in their own movies first: there will be little time for character development in the team film. I think the way to go is to follow one hero as he/she joins the League. That should be the only major hero we are meeting for the first time. Doesn't matter who...Hawkman, Flash...someone who would have more trouble carrying their own film. And the villain should most definitely be someone like Darkseid: an epic, I-will-literally-destroy-the-world-unless-the-JLA-stops-me kinda villain.
-
Or is that too unrealistic for Nolan?
-
I was watching Donnie Brasco, but I left to make my lunch. Just came back to sit down and eat. Donnie Brasco is over and Rearview Window with Christopher Reeves has started at 1:00. Crazy stuff like this happens when I'm at AICN. Anyway, sure wish he would have been able to do something else with Superman. Even if it was a passing the torch kind of thing.
-
what crack are you smoking ... shes clasically beautiful .. too old, maybe ... not the right face, no, that's wrong.
-
It's all about story and intent. If Batman was included in Justice League as a side character, like, "hey look, it's Batman!", I wouldn't be interested to begin with. Same with Sups. However, if they have the right story any combination of the characters WOULD work and it COULD BE very enjoyable. Such as, I really enjoy the Trilogy comic books (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman). Since they're also attempting a Wonder Woman movie, why not do a Trilogy flick? In the end it all comes down to the story, and the money, I suppose. Yes, comic books are definitely different than movies. But movies are still all about suspense of disbelief. If they can get us to do that, the sky is the limit for super hero movies. They could even have multiple actors playing the same characters (and may have to) if they can get us (the audience) to buy into it.
-
...Kate was/is a bigger star. Posey is an indie queen and it was probably quite a big deal for her (personally) to get the role she did.
-
I understand where you are coming from, and if the Batman franchise were to continue ad infinitum, like the Bond series, I would have NO problem with those characters being introduced gradually. But here's the thing: Batman is still *becoming* the Batman we know and love at this point in the new series. HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A BATCAVE, YET. And you want Oracle and Nightwing in there? How would that even work at this point? I get it, man. I really do. You want the movies to be exactly like the comics. But the comics' mythology was developed over decades. Nolan has made two films so far. All I am saying is, where is the fire? Let the man develop Batman as a character before we throw in all these other characters. The primary comic series is called "Batman" after all, not "Batman and His Amazing Friends". Well, technically I guess the primary book is called "Detective Comics". But you know what I'm sayin'.
-
I, too, initially thought John Hamm would be good for superman -- but something seemed a little off, and then I thought: Captain Marvel! That is the role for Mr. Hamm.
-
Are you going to call up your buddy at Legendary again and get him to call bullshit on Nolan too?
-
Huh. Never would have thought of that. I have never, EVER used Google. My homepage has been Yahoo since, like 1996. 97 at the latest. I live in the Bay Area and Yahoo! was big here before Google ever existed. I just never switched over.
-
...but he actually looks a little goofy to me. Not so super heroish. I don't watch that series that so many people love, though... Mad Men? So I could be totally off base. But just seeing pics of him, or him at awards shows, he doesn't strike me as the super hero leading man kinda actor.
-
Terrible idea. Seriously, William H. Macy? Good thing you dont make movies...goddamn.

Go fuck yourself. You are on crack if you don't think Heath deserved the Oscar. Who was better?? hahahah idiot.

A JLA story with no origins is exactly what I want. The problem is, and this is something that bat725 and a lot of die-hard comic fans don't seem to understand, is that these movies aren't being made for comic book fans: they are being made for movie fans. The movie Batman IS the "real" Batman to many, many more people than the comic book Batman is. I know that's a hard pill to swallow for people who have loved comics all their life (like me), but that is the truth. It is hard to accept the fact that the pop-culture universe does not revolve around us, but it simply does not.
And what this has to do with your post is simple: the reason you could not do a JLA film without first introducing at least the following characters--Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern--is because most people would be thinking "who the fuck is that?" They have no goddamn idea who these characters are, except for the shitty 70s Wonder Woman, etc.
Now, some characters are pretty self-explanatory, and any movie audience could "get it" in a minute: the Flash, for example...he's a quick-witted speedster. Simple as that. Hawkman is Conan with wings. Pretty easy. Aquaman is king of the oceans. Done. Those are the guys who can just kind of show up in the film and the audience can learn as they go. But the big three, or a character like GL, with his incredibly rich mythology, they NEED their own films so the movie audiences can learn to appreciate them, or they won't give a shit if they ever team up.
The whole *point* of the JLA is that it's a bunch of cool characters who band together, and that coolness factor disappears if the viewer has no idea who they are or why they are considered "cool". -
I have been on here for hours. At some point I actually need to get some work done. Nice chatting with you!
-
Just sayin...
-
Riddler Catwoman Mr. Freeze Poison Ivy Penguin Bat-Mite (ok not really.) All the other ones might work in the comics, where the suspension of disbelief is easier to manage, but I don't want to see them in the Nolan Bat-verse. Bane, Black Mask, Mad Hatter, Hush, Hugo Strange, Firefly, Scarface... all too lightweight/cheesy/C-grade/boring. Guys like Clayface, Man-Bat, and Killer Croc are too outlandish for the realism they've established. I'd love to see Harley Quinn but she won't work by herself and would only detract from the Joker/Batman dynamic. I think that only the ones I've listed at the top have the mainstream name recognition to work in a blockbuster movie, who could still retain their specific comic book trappings while being made to fit in the somewhat realistic movie-reality that Nolan has carefully constructed over the course of two movies. -
I think he would be perfect for the roll, the look , the way he acts in both Dexter and The Gamer
-
....at the same time. Jus' sayin'.
-
He left two slight easter eggs in both movies aluding to this team up. I can't wait.
-
Cause you did it twice, more than an hour apart. Nothing personal Jaka...you're not the first person to make that mistake.
-
But you're right. I did do it up above LONG before it had started playing. lol Oh well. I'll try harder next time. I decided to watch To Live and Die in LA, anyway. Good lord this movie is so freakin' 80's. But much like everything else William L Peterson did before CSI, I forgot he was in it.
-
both would be perfect as the KING PIN of GOTHAM...
-
...Mr. Freeze. Well GOOD! I don't think I can stand any more "ice" puns... (BATMAN & ROBIN flashback shudder)
-
...sorry about that Jaka. And To Live and Die in LA? I haven't seen that flick since the 80's. Think I'll go dig it up outta my old VHS's and reminisce...
-
The b movie director who gave us the Boggy Creek movies and The Town That Dreaded Sundown in the 70s/80s died march 5.
-
....cracked me the hell up because I can totally picture him with the monocle and the costume. But it would just be way too distracting, I think. I'd just keep laughing because it was QT up there as the Penguin. Plus, I think dude is physically unable to not swish his hand around while speaking.
-
That was totally tame by AICN standards. Not even sure it reached the level of snark. All cool over here. To Live and Die In LA on VHS is so perfect! After you see the bar dance scene again you'll understand. I did find it interesting that Willem Dafoe was kissing a dude way back in 1985, though. I thought Bookdock Saints was the first time he "went there".
-
With all the fuss about THE DARK KNIGHT and its success it's easy to forget about the movie that redefined what superhero flicks could be. That laid the groundwork in bravura MEMENTO-esque fashion, with layered time strands, intelligence and excitement (together at last!), and a powerful thematic message about conquering fear...
But above all - what a cast BATMAN BEGINS had. I'd like to submit it as Exhibit A. For potential best movie cast of the last decade...
MORGAN FREEMAN
GARY OLDMAN
RUTGER HAUER
KEN WATANABE
TOM WILKINSON
CILLIAN MURPHY
MICHAEL CAINE
CHRISTIAN BALE
KATIE HOLMES
and LIAM MOTHERFUCKING NEESON.
Anyone care to trump that? And please... don't say I HEART HUCKABEES or I might have to hunt you down and hurt you. -
Just the fact that he's happy with it and excited about it makes me pretty excited. He absolkutely knows what he's doing and he knows how to make great films. Still though I was not crazy for Batman Begins and TDK is solid if slightly overrated. But the Joker needs to be out, or a small cameo at the most. And seriously Joseph Gordon Levitt would be a cool villain, but if I hear one more person cry out for him to take over the Joker...I don't know but god that shit is annoying.
-
Despite what y'all say about plot baggage, if there is one actor who is true to the Christopher Reeve spirit of Superman, it is Brandon Routh. He really nailed Supes and Singer's film is a great tribute to Dick Donner's work. The problem with folks these days is they are spoilt. They want it all to be whizz-bang and ker-pow, where Superman is more about a guy finding his way in the world than kicking some Braniac's butt. All we are saying...is give Routh a chance! (All together now)
-
But if any film could command that pull it's a Batman film. But Katie Holmes was a huge mis-step, and we all know it.

No surprise. We knew from the beginning that it will be a trilog
by mrfloppy
No surprise. We knew from the beginning that it will be a trilogy. The said that while promoting Begins.
-
The Dark Knight finished the story unless you go into future Gotham and the Dark Knight Returns era. So help me, if they give Bruce "closure" I will take a Chipotle powered turbo shit on the premier's red carpet. I know it's risky; Goyer and Kevin Smith are likely to be there and aroused by the aroma; but I will do it--with extra cheese.
-
I hope that they realize that there is no way to close the batman chapter without making two films out of it.
-
I've said a few times that Oldman and Caine are part of what has made these two films so good. The Bruce Wayne/Alfred relationship is effortless (from an acting standpoint) and Gary Oldman just IS Com. Gordon.
-
...that there was room for a third film (or more). It ends with several story threads unresolved.
-
Say you're done directing an extremely successful franchise after 3. Please, please Nolan will you direct a fourth one? Sure why not.
-
Perfect casting in a less than perfect film. He really DOES deserve another shot.
-
who says Jor El has to be about 60?

they did it for Brando in SR - plus Arnie in T4 and Bridges in Tron 2.0 - aint no reason why they couldnt find some shots of Reeve in various films hes done and CGI...
even though it looks like Nolans version wont have anything to do with Superman Returns, there was nothing to do with Reeve in SR was there...so it be ok (like Bixby turning up in TIH)
also like to see them use the Williams score - but only the odd musical cameo - not the main theme like in SR...
can keep all the other Donner stuff though - it be time for a change...otherwise may as well just make it a sequel to SR (which Nolan sure as shit aint gonna do) -

sorry bout dat

Despite the fact that this film ignores Superman IV: The Quest for Peace (1987), a brief reference to the events of said film remain. As Clark is rushing through the Daily Planet, he passes several old headlines framed on the wall. One of them mentions Superman saving the Wall. In the aforementioned film, Superman uses telekinesis to rebuild the Great Wall of China after Nuclear Man destroys it.
-
- Superman - the KING of all 'super'heroes returns...the one that started it all in comics (1938)...toons (40s)...tv show (1950s)...and most important of all the movies - which to this day remain the bench mark for which all others must be judged.
- Sequel to those films - so fans and movie goers in general would love that - Phantom Menace levels of anticipation and nostalgia
- 20 years since the last film and a 25 since the last one everyone liked
- STM did 300m ww (about 1b when adjusted)
- Reeve and Brandos recent deaths - creating more interest (heath ledger style - not that anyone knew that at the time)
- Smallville doing well on tv providing sorta advertising for the movie (the seasons that were near to the release of the film started to homage the Donner verse)
- Bryan X Men Singer directing - fresh off the critically lauded X2...the guy that really brought the superhero film back
- The Spidey films doing 800m....Spidey and Supes have always been similar...and the comic book thing was back in vogue BIG time
-post 9/11 people were wanting superheroes…superman was the ultimate wish for guy…the plane rescue was even kind of 9/11 inspired
instead superman returned and no one gave a shit
-
that was kinda cool - set 1938
maybe Nolan should go retro -
Oooo! Let's hope so! That really makes the movie, like, when Bale lowers his voice and it gets all scratchy and rough and it's like, scary. Like this guy in the Dune piss suit with the black canteloupe on his head could really bust you up, especially with a voice like that!

Its quite apt SR got included in the Reeve 14 disc steel tin dvd
by cartmanez
as a part of the Donner/Reeve series...the Nolan Superman can be a completly seperate entity with a new Box set.
-
"ending Nolan's direct involvement", I pray to God that you are not correct about your "how FOREVER continued the franchise from RETURNS" comparison. WB cannot be that cruel.
-
I know comparing Nolan to Ratner is like comparing apples and dogshit, but Ratner fucked up that franchise and now we've got shitty prequels trying to get around the fact that the rat killed off cyclops and prof x. I have enjoyed the fuck out of Nolan's batman movies and i would love to see him step back and produce twenty more while someone else directs, cuz, honestly, the word "end" scares me.
-
It maintains an always visible spot on the DVD/book shelves. One of my favorite ever movie purchases.
-
...let's all sit back and relax while David Goyer fucks up Superman.
-
...and the studio was clearly not paying attention to trends. Because X3 is one of the biggest and most inexplicable cluster fucks of a movie ever made.
-
remember the early rumours that Terence Stamp was going to possibly reprise his role as Zod so I presume the idea was to have Terence Stamp in jail having lost his powers (and as a result becoming old or something) then with Lexs help gets them back and becomes young again in the form of Jude Law (who was also linked to Zod and who looks abit like a young Stamp) who kicks supermans ass
having Superman II/Matrix 3 style battles amongst all the Superman The Movie style heroics mightve led to about another $100m in overall BO and as a result a sequel last summer or xmas
i suppose that wouldve made it more of a retred of STM and II as opposed to just STM (although there were a few nods to II as we know - the kid, Lex been in the FOS before, Supes losing his powers and being beat up, Clark at the ranch dressed like a depowered Reeve)
im pretty sure the intention was probably to do that and is probably in the original script somewhere but got canned due to casting problems and budget concerns
-
What else is new?
-
Putting his influence on a new Superman movie, is nothing short of geek-gasm inducing. I was one of the few who did not hate Superman Returns but it definitely left a lot of room for improvement. I would love to see Routh back as Supes, even Spacey as Luthor. But Luthor CANNOT be the main bad guy, I have had enough of Luthor. Let him be involved, but please oh please give us a different villain for Superman to battle.
-
but I don't think she's what the studios are looking for in a leading lady. It doesn't even matter that she's an incredible actress, she doesn't have the face that studios are looking for to put on a poster for a high profile film.In fact I'd even be willing to bet that Singer hired her for the role of Lois Lane and the studios said get someone prettier and more famous, because aside from Bosworth the casting for that film was dead on.

Tee-hee. That actually makes me happy.

Jon Hamm for Superman. And while we're at it, bring in Alex Ross for artistic direction or conceptual design.
-
Remember that? I'm getting flashbacks to Nicolas Cage in a black suit. I really hope I'm wrong because nothing Nolans done has suggested he's right for Superman. People seem to want a little more flash bang and wallop with a healthy dose of originality. Why not set them in the same universe? It's not like you have to mention it and it free's up the field for the Worlds Finest that fans have been getting blue balls over for years. My fingers are crossed but I have my doubts that Warners know what they are doing anymore.
-
CARTMANEZ... That concept of Zod being rejigged to fight Superman again is crap... but also genius!
And yes indeed, it would definitely been better and more commercial than that limp love triangle storyline they actually went for.
Zod would have pushed the buttons for us older fans, but as you say the possibility of MATRIX style super fisticuffs would have brought in the box office for the kids too. -

Still wondering how dense some readers of AICN are when they can't tell what Nolan means by "ending his story." 3-film story arc building Bruce Wayne/Batman into more of a hard-ass than previous film incarnations.

I think WB may hire a competent director to run their flagship franchise. They want another Dark Knight sized gross, and hopefully they'll find someone that will be able to deliver on that. If it were any other franchise I'd be worried, but I don't think WB will just flush it down the toilet the way they did with Burton's by hiring someone like Schumaker.
-
He didn't write that shit.
-
That's a new one for me.
-
No, but he didn't have to film it, either. And he certainly didn't have to make the entire movie feel like nobody involved actually cared. The studio get as much blame as him for all of that, too. It was just bad business by all parties involved. Soured a lot of people to a franchise that, up to then, had far surpassed a lot of expectations.
-
Might work. Use some outtakes, body doubles etc etc
-
No cape, no stylized S on the chest, in fact, the colors red and blue will be nonexistent - only black will be acceptable. Because black is realistic and Nolan is all about realism, especially when he makes movies about SUPERHEROES.
-
Seems to me you have to back to the Al Ghul's. With Ra's presumably dead, his daughter would launch her own inquiries to find his killer. She would of course have a massive bodyguard, and a stealthy female assassin-type. They break the Joker out, use Jonathan Crane to F with Gotham's citizens, while Talia goes about dstorying Bruce Wayne publicly.
-
would be like killing the Joker in Burton's Batman. ie: shit

There will be females in this one

doesnt necessarily mean a stone cold ending for the character...Nolan's done too good a job of setting up the universe to close it down definately ("I think you and I are destined to do this forever"in TDK gave me chills, at it sounded like it was a set up rather than a wind down).I think a possible move is that its just ending the Batman as villain arch really. I mean, Batman has been considered quite heavily to be a criminal and a menace even in Begins, not the respected Bats we know from the comics, so the ending might be just that he proves himself to be an undoubted hero, and is heralded the champion of Gotham. Sure, theyre be people who still think hes in the wrong, but he'll have finally cemented his rep as the symbol of good in Gotham, particularly after Dents death(although I admit that could lead to the copycats we saw in TDK again :S)
-
Dude took a job when he was needed, and he got a box office smash on his resume as a result, you can't hate the guy for that. Especially when he came in as late as he did. If you're gonna find fault with him, hate him for saying "The Phoenix Saga couldn't carry a film", hate him for being a douche, don't hate him for doing something that would further his career.
-
....outta left field WTF?! I could get down with that.
-
You can blame a lot of that on the Singer vs. Berry and Rothman situation and Vaughn bolting. The morale was fucked before Brett even signed on, and nothing would have turned it around. For the cast, or the fans.
-
As close as Nolan and Ledger were, do you honestly believe he'll write in some hack cameo in the 3rd film for another actor whether we see their face or not... Get real people.
-
Because it's pretty interesting that Joseph Gordon Levitt was cast in Inception, after everyone was talking about how he might be a suitable replacement for Ledger. People are recast all the time, it wouldn't be a cataclysmic event for someone to take over the role. In fact I'd be willing to bet that 90% of the moviegoing public will have forgotten by 2012 and won't even notice a competent actor that resembles Ledger took over the role.
-
Whats the bet Guy Pearce is the Riddler
-
While I see your point, I just can't see the filmmakers putting themselves or the actor in that position... Soon as the joker comes up people will be taken out of the film and think about ledger... Weeks leading up to the film there will be interviews about it all over the net and tv... People will remember... And other than Scarecrow making a cameo appearance in Knight, the people involved in this franchise don't seem into repeating themselves.
-
Against Gordon's wishes, the GCPD hires renowned serial killer profiler Edward Nygma, not realizing that often Nygma is the killer himself, leaving clues that implicate him, but also point to someone else.
Meanwhile, Bruce, without Rachel as an anchor, is on the verge of slipping into darkness (Alfred even jokes about adopting), when he gets on the trail of a cat burgler.
Don't know much about B-Plots, but essentially, Nygma figures out and reveals that Bruce Wayne is Batman and, instead of telling everyone torments him with riddles and blackmails. Bruce considers leaving it all behind with the cat burgler, Gotham socialite Selina Kyle, playing an equally dangerous game.
Don't know if it ends with him giving up Batman for good, or having the public believe, again, that Batman doesn't exist, and is just a legend. Meanwhile, in the shadows, criminals still fear his name. -

Superman Returns in 1992 (if it really had only been 5 years)
by cartmanez
somewhere in another universe SR came out in 92 (i.e. the same amount of time supes had been away in the movie) with a similar story and a big budget - like $80-100m
this was the cast
Supes - Christopher Reeve
Lex - Gene Hackman
Lois - Linda Fiorentino
Richard White - Tom Selleck
Kitty/Eve - Jennifer Tilly
Perry White - the guy who played Murtagh & Riggs boss in the Lethel Weapons and was also in STM (Jackie Cooper retired in 1990)
Jor El - Brando footage (even some more vocal stuff from the still living Brando)
Batman (cameo) - Michael Keaton
Zod (cameo in jail) - Stamp
directed by Richard Donner
-
His movies are basically just a few graphic novels stuck together but somehow he's a genius and its all his vision lol.
Plus I'm pretty sure he murdered Ledger so he didn't get all the credit for TDK. -
it robbed the world of a great Rocky Balboa style Superman film with Reeve as superman (probably Superman Returns made by singer except with Reeve in the role)
-
Why would I say this? Because it looks like that the Nolan brothers have been subtly upturning what we know of the Batman mythos and going against what we expect from it. For example, they burned down Wayne Manor in Batman Begins. And in The Dark Knight, there was no Bat cave HQ for Batman. These are two "home and hearth" elements for Batman/Bruce Wayne we've most associated with the mythos. The third element would be Alfred.

Box office wise the Reeve (I-III) films were just as big as Batm
by cartmanez
STM made so $134,218,018 (domestic total in 1978) = $427,891,600 when adjusted today....it made $166,000,000 overseas = about $560m today
total estimate = about $980-$1bm ww
SII made abit less than STM - around $250m ww in 1980...= about $650m ww
SIII made $60m domestic in 1983 which is $130m when adjusted... overseas will have also fallen quite abit - so maybe about $80m for overseas - so $140m total in 83 would be around $300m ww when adjusted - a big drop from I and II, but far from the flop everyone makes out..)
-
I find Superman boring, so having Cranston play Luthor is probably the only way I'll see a Superman movie again.
-
about 600-650m...instead it did a little better than Superman III(when adjusted)...therefore no sequel
-
2nd best scene = Superman gets drunk...
those 2 scenes alone make it better than Superman Returns...

You know I'm right. I said it here first. You're welcome...

After Batman 3 take it to the next level, its the next logical step for WB to make.

I think Joe Anderson from The Crazies and Across The Universe would do nicely as The Riddler or Joker (IF used sparingly) I think he resembles Heath enough that he could at least pull off the visual side of it (have him in Arkham and make sure he keeps his mouth shut (unless he's able to do a serviceable impression

If it doesn't start with Ra's waking Harvey up in a cave (with a smokey lazarus pit in the background) then I will be very disappointed. "hello mister dent. Would who like to know who the dark knight really is?". "did you miss me, detective?!"
-
Yeah, I have no clue who the bad guy is gonna be. The Riddler seems like the most likely "Realistic" villain for Nolan, but stop with all this Catwoman bullshit, she isn't going to be in it. Nolan said it during all the DK interviews. He said "No penguin, Robin, Catwoman, or Mr.Freeze." Why the fuck would you want Catwoman in it, it's retarded. Go back and watch the first two films and try and decide how Catwoman would work out. Recasting the Joker would be interesting, but what's he gonna do, bring chaos back to Gotham for another 3 hours? Doesn't make sense. The Hannibal Lecter idea is possible, but honestly, the only idea I've heard so far that makes any sense with bringing in a new villain with theatricality is The League of Shadows. They observed Gotham after Ducard died and then saw what the Joker and Batman did, and how powerful they were and decided to strike the city by using their own theatrical agents, maybe the Riddler or something. But fuck Catwoman or Mr.Freeze or any of those stupid fucking Tim Burton/Schumacher villains who suck monkey balls! God those ideas are fucking horrible!!! And if anybody posts Robin Williams for anything, get the fuck off this site!!!
-
PLEASE BE GOOD!!!
-
Nolan ended the series with the Dark Knight. It was poetic. The Batman shit was all destroyed, the mob was eliminated, Joker was captured, and Gotham was self-sufficient, all because Batman took the fall for what Dent did, because he could choose to be what Gotham needed him to be, fucking brilliant! Nolan ended the series already but the movie made so much fucking money coupled with the fact that the main actors signed on for 3 films forced Nolan's hand. Disappointing in one sense, exhilarating in another. Can't wait!!!
-
All the main actors contracts are up after the 3rd film. Bale, Caine, Oldman won't do any more films if Nolan is not involved. When he goes they go. Batman 3 is the end. And it will be glorious.
-
Bats voises da insects. Yowp!
-
The mob has been more a part of this Batman arch than any other Batman arch on film, but it's never really had that BIG BAD SCARY element to it, because it's never had a BIG BAD SCARY mofo in charge. Eric Roberts was good, but he showed too much of a human side near the end of TDK. Gandolfini, even when he's playing the good guy, seems to lack any humanity at all. He's just a dark, foreboding presence you don't want to fuck with, even in kid's movies -- just watch Where the Wild Things Are for those unsettling flashes of unpredictability. They don't have to make Penguin the central villian, but if the mob plays a role, Penguin would make a great mob boss -- trying to reform and rebuild the ranks after Batman and the Joker destroyed them, and doing it with massive bloodshed. I can just hear the trademark Tony Soprano heavy breathing in the first Batman 3 teaser as Penguin calmly and coldly lays out his murderous plans for taking back Gotham.

Listen up. Let's have a confab. Here, lemme grab a cold one from the fridge...brb.
OK, there ya go.......ahhh, tastes great. Well, I brought you here today for a few concerns that I have regarding Superman and Batman. I'll preface by saying at 3 years old I drew a 1-page panel of Superman and Batman fighting beside one another, and even though my cartoon balloons didn't have anything legible in them, I'm pretty sure they said:
You can't have Superman without Batman. That is the law; that is the rule. Does a Yin have a Yang? Did Tango have Cash? Did Martin Lawrence have Will Smith? Jackie have Chris?
Erm, okay, I'm going for a deeper, more resonant analogy here; but you get the ideer. Batman and Superman redefined one another over the years the same way the two iconic, mythic figures redefined "hero" in our eyes. Batman and Superman have a bond, a connection forged by heroism and duty, respect and power, knowledge and righteousness. At times resentment and compromise. But the dynamic between them should not be denied and could make for the most splendid movie magic given a brave enough, bold enough director.
No matter how successful "Dark Knight" was (yes, I loved it, awesome job. The Joker wasn't really "Joker-y" enough, but hey, Nicholson, right?) because you played the gritty realism card, you have a larger sense of duty to the audience, the beloved myths of these heroes, to keep them in the same universe, to acknowledge the ebb and flow of their relationship and in turn create a possibility for a story we would all want to see: the Superman and Batman "team-up".
Think about the possibilities. Handles right, it could be the further redefinition of the superhero movie genre; for the first time an inter-hero dynamic explored, and what better than the World's Finest to do this with?
You pushed the genre further than anyone has before with The Dark Knight; do the right thing here, for a fantastic tale - nay, an amazing movie - could be told.
Respectfully Yours,
jedimast3r -
The X-Men movies didn't "bring the super hero movie back".
Look back a little farther, get some insight, maybe rent The Crow or Blade. Those 2 movies paved the way for the X-Films. Blade really revitalized things at Marvel Films, and once Marvel movies began to catch on after the success of both Blade and Spider-Man, DC/Warner wanted their piece, of course.
The shitty ass X-Films did not start the new era of comic adaptations. (Sorry, I never liked them. All the characters were mishandled and miscast for me, seeing as how I come from the late 70's tales to Claremont days as a reader.) -
.....Batman villain is Firefly.

.....Batman villain is Firefly.

“It’s very exciting, we have a fantastic story,” Christopher Nolan said while sipping tea in the sleek editing suite that fills the converted garage adjacent to his Hollywood home.
Fucking asshole. This description makes it sound like he insists on himself as much as his movies do.
“And we feel we can do it right. We know the milieu, if you will, we know the genre and how to get it done right."
Yea, you know the genre all right, you know how to take all the life out of Batman and make a terribly overrated, monotonous trainwreck of a movie. The Dark Knight was weak. All right, all right, it was average...at best. -
I thought you gave up that routine? PS- Fuck Firefly.
-
Enough with the one-man, armored tank version of Bats. Batman is first and foremost a detective, a private eye who doesn't require compensation. How many police, police detectives, and private investigators constantly need full body protection? Give us a sleeker Batman. His cape is his trenchcoat, his cowl his fedora. He doesn't need to be all frontal assault all of the time. And when there is a need to take people down, he does it from the shadows with his ninpo skills and his batarangs. He wouldn't constantly engage hoards of people every time. Also, please return the fantastic element. This is a superhero, after all. It doesn't need to be all four color and camp, but the hard slant toward realism paints the writer, the character, and the milieu into a corner. Gotham needs to be balanced on the spectrum.

Most people are neglecting the obvious: Nolan's third Bat-pic will SURELY involve Talia (and perhaps even a return of Ra's) in some way. Perhaps she/they won't be the ONLY antagonist(s), but bringing this "story" full circle, "giving it an ending" as Nolan states, clearly indicates to me that he's ALWAYS had this story element in mind. Since I'm already not too fond of Nolan's Bat-films, I really don't know what I think of him "godfathering" Superman. While the Supes film franchise does need good, hard kick in the ass (far, FAR away from anything Donner/Singer), I'm not quite sure Nolan is the right person. However, Goyer knows his comic-book mythology shit (even if he's a crappy screenwriter and an absolutely atrotious director), so that gives me a bit of hope. Oh yeah, and for the last time -- ROUTH WILL NOT BE BACK!!!
-
ROUTH WILL NOT BE BACK.
-
from what i've read, nolan has simply stated that he disagrees that catwoman has to be in the next movie.as far as how she could fit into the story...well she could serve as a continuation of the theme of misguided individuals who, inspired by batman, hit the streets as vigilantes, but lacking his sense of "rules".i would like to hear why a woman who dresses like a cat is somehow less plausible (or more stupid)than a man who dresses like a bat..or for that matter a man who uses a clown motif.and you make a point about catwoman and mr freeze being "stupid fucking Tim Burton/Schumacher villains who suck monkey balls!" when joker and the riddler were both used by those directors respectively. mr freeze would seem out of place in the type of world that has been set up by batman begins and the dark knight, but catwoman fits right in with the existing themes and story arc of gotham city.

Mr.Freese is easily one of my favorites, such a tragic character, his portrayal in the old Batman animated is amazing.
Secondly, the Supes movie will fail if it doesnt have a HUGE epic fight like in the DC animated, all these supes films and we have yet to see such a thing. -

Would there really be a need for a Batman in a world with Superman? And if the world was really filled with that many metas, mutants, what have you, I think it's pretty safe to assume that they would replace humanity more or less over night. As cool as stuff like Justice League and Avengers might be, ultimately, it becomes sort of silly. The stories are MUCH stronger when they're written as if there is only one team or one hero, not THOUSANDS of them. Imho.

Hire Morrison and Johns As Consultants (At The Very Least)

A nihilsitic villain who wants the city to tear itself apart, a man who escalated the organised attacks of Batman Begins? Where the hell is Nolan going with this? If he is expecting resolution think carefully to any third installment in a trilogy and it has to balance ramping up the ante with neatly resolved plot threads.I trust Nolan & Nolan to do a damn good job refining whatever raw material Goyer puts their way, but in the whole universe of trilogies can anyone cite ones that have been successfull, other than LotR: RotK? I'm talking big trilogies here...Godfather III? Nope. Terminator III? Nope. PotC III? Nope. Spider-man III? Nope. SW: RotJ? Nope. Jurassic Park III? Nope. Then there are the clusterfucks which went beyond trilogies: Indiana Jones III? Shameful and IV was worse. Star Wars: Return of the Jedi? Ewoks and the next three films were hollow cash-ins on the initial two films. Please make this film the exception which proves the rule.
-
...is not measured by Box Office numbers. It's measured by posterity.
-
Oh, and do lets get past the age thing as it's totally retarded. It's not an origin film, so he doesn't have to be a teenager. Further, I'm sure he could bulk up enough to fit the role as Bale did for Batman. (Btw, NONE of the actors cast in ANY of the recent superhero movies have bodies even remotely as ripped as they are in the comics (because their bodies are impossibly perfect in the comics and impossible), so do please let that argument go as it makes no sense and bares no relation to how audiences view these films (unless, of course, you're a morbidly obese virgin living in mom's basement, then I'm sure that line of reasoning makes total sense.)
-
as that article shows, they're not confirming that Lex and Brainiac are the villains nor does it state that it is or isn't an origin so the rumours that followed Nolan's mentoring and Goyer writing may or may not be true.
-
and reports last year had Johns, Morrison and Wolfman acting as consultants to DC films. And Johns being promoted to "chief creative officer of DC Entertainment" would mean he has more influence and involvement.
-
are necessary because we need metas sitting around the Watchtower bored and waiting for work. Let's have some realism here people. It is Nolan for cripe's sake.
-
Jonn Hamm would have needed to begin playing him 5 years ago unless you just want him in 1 movie. The ONLY way a Superman Trilogy would work with an actor beginning at 40 or 41 years old is if they shot it Lord Of The Rings style back to back, which they don't have the balls to do. And if they did decide to, it would mean the end for Mad Men or like a 2yr hiatus. And he would definitely need to go on the HGH and start throwing around monster truck tires 300 style.
-
that people have wanted make stick for a while now. It's become like a meme. Spread by the Borg. It's almost up there with the Krasinksis.

...will have Bruce and Alfred back in newly completed Wayne Manor, changes and additions to the Batcave to make it more high tech and hospitalble; since the Batmobile destroyed this has been updated; finally even more gadgets and training sorted since he has to be SUPER STEALTH to avoid police and fight and capture bad guys- so this would mean it could focus more on his detective and sleuth skills- most of that should be a given in my humble opinion but I'm probably wrong!??!!
No idea about the villian(s) though! He could go in any direction, having said that I know the reality of Nolan's university is more gritty and grounded in reality but his Batman films stopped being "realistic" half way through BB when that car chase kicked in...not that I'm complaining, I love 'em! -
I'm not convinced he could pull off Clark. When I heard Clooney was playing Batman I thought he would be perfect, but he blew it because he played Batman and Bruce Wayne the same.
-
and then it will look like Schumacher's! The cave, the gadgets, the puns etc. Finally. Closure.
-
Cloney smirk and bobblehead action.
-
as far as trilogies go.
-
I'd like to know when you last read a Batman comic. Batman wearing body armour and viciously hospitalising wrongdoers isn't Nolan's invention. What's the point of being the worlds best martial artist if you going to stand in the shadows lobbing things - and how exciting is that actually going to look on screen?
-
...were guys- make them chicks in Batman 3- which Nolan will call something else but should have Gotham in the title... so chick bad "guys" Talia Al Ghul and Harlie Quinn- both want to take revenge on Bats for killing/stopping their mentors. He takes them both down...consolidating his view that hate and revenge is not the path to choose and that he made the right decicison to choose the path for good blah blah...clutching at straws here...

Jon Hamm Is 38, Not 41, And He Looks About 32, 35 Maximum
by laserpants
I'm not sure if you guys realized, but these movies are magic! They have people playing teenagers who are, like, 30 years old! I'm not even joking, man, it's crazy. So, given the wonderful magic of Hollywood, I think it's pretty safe to say that Hamm could EASILY play Superman in a trilogy of films, and if WB wants to make it awesome? They'll all but beg him to do it. There's a reason why the Jon Hamm is Superman meme has taken off (it's not just here, but all over the internets), he's basically PERFECT for the role. Of course, if Nolan loses his mind and decides he wants to dumb it down and make a tween-friendly romantic comedy out of it, he can cast Tom Welling.
-
Just wondering. (Pauses as "Jon Hamm is too old" retort slowly sinks into the sea.)
-
that like in the comics ("The Long Halloween") the threat in Gotham will move more from mobsters to costumed supervillains.
-
Hmmm...I'll take...DJ Cotrona!
-
That's my boy!
-
Why would Nolan separate Supes and Bat's worlds? That is fucking retarded. They exist in the same universe for a reason... look how Iron Man and Marvel are developing their universe... it's hella cool and necessary. In other words, I don't think Nolan should separate the two worlds. We want one world! And fuck the end. We want more Batman movies. Fucking hate this idea of good franchises only being able to live to 3. Fuck that.
-
And they're not shooting this movie anytime soon
-
I think all that Nolan meant was: 1. The third Batman film will be an end to the story arc he has been telling, and, 2. His Superman film will have nothing to do with Batman, not that the two will never ever meet in the movies. That said, A LOT of people seem to be assuming that Batman will die or stop being Batman and that WB has no plans to ever consider a JL movie, and I think WB and/or Nolan needs to make a statement to correct this thinking ASAP, because they are well on their way to having a terrible buzz on two of their biggest upcoming movies before even a single frame of film has been shot.
-
are saying those things...it's all over the web.
-
...how Nolan acts like his movies are 'too good' for Mr Freeze or Catwoman. Maybe the real reason these characters in Batmans universe aren't involved is because you SUCK ASS at making movies and aren't clever enough to think of realistic interpretations. I never liked Robin, but if I was playing Batman in a movie (or directing a Batman film for that matter) I wouldn't be so up my own ass I'd ever say "Robin isn't going to be in these movies." Seriously, TDK was horrible, it licked more balls than a roofied Paris Hilton.
This is the reason its frustrating when movies like TDK get heaps of praise: it gives way too much confidence to the people making them. Now Nolan thinks hes some visionary when he's just a tool that actually made Batman boring. Congratulations, you took one of the most interesting super heros and threw them in a generic crime drama with a piss poor attempt at 100% realism. -
TDK was "horrible"? Come on man. I get that you didn't like it, but how was it horrible? Either you are being a tad bit hyperbolic or you are just really trolling this tb hard...

would be brilliant. A Superman in the middle of the Depression. That would be so wonderful.
As for Batman 3 being an ending, that makes sense. He is a criminal on the run at the end of 2, so he needs to be redeemed, both as Batman and Bruce Wayne (who blames himself for his sweeties death).
Riddler and Catwoman.
Riddler can be the foil to redeem Batman.
Catwoman can be the "foil" to redeem Bruce.
BOOM write the story. -
I'm sorry, but I am 32, and the guy looks a good 5-7 years older than me, which he is. He is TOO OLD to play Superman in the first film of a franchise that is not even going to begin until two to three years from now. Not to mention the fact that he does not have the build for it, and it is not as easy for a guy in his late thirties to put on muscle mass as it is for a guy in his late twenties. It is a geek pipe dream that will never happen. Sorry. Nothing against Jon Hamm--Mad Men is one of my favorite shows--but Hell will literally freeze over before he plays Superman in any movie other than the one in your minds.
-
You heard it here first. He can get the build for it (have you seen BRONSON?), he is a good age, he is a great actor, and he is in Nolan's INCEPTION. You heard it here first.
-
on Superman is that it should be treated as a serious science fiction film, as opposed to a "superhero movie". Similar to how they treat the Batman franchise as a series of crime dramas. Just a guess.
-
Star Trek IV The Voyage home was a great last chapter to the Genesis trilogy
and what about Evil Dead 3?
and the Good the Bad and The Ugly was arguably the best of the Dollars trilogy -
Goldfinger is another.
-
Doesn't 'A Fistful of Dynamite' mean that Leone's films don't count as a trilogy? And Eastwood is known as Joe in 'Dollars', Monco in 'Dollars More' and Blondie in 'TGTBATU' so they aren't really a trilogy in the same vein as..YES...The Bourne trilogy. Which does go some way to suggesting there can be exceptions, thank goodness.
-
Inception intrigues me and I've loved all his films so far (except Following, which I haven't seen before anyone points that one out). I would have loved to have seen his rumoured Prisoner remake.
To be fair, nobody would have thought of Ras Al Ghul and Scarecrow as a villain combo, so I suspect there's a surprise there.
As much as I'd love a Superman/Batman showdown, I can see Nolan's logic in giving him a solo stage. And sad to say it, I wasn't a big Superman Returns fan (Spacey excepted) -
No. Case closed. JON HAMM IS SUPERMAN.
-
Brillant! Again, proof that Nolan knows what he's doing.
-
Make it totally stand-alone except for (maybe) the John Williams. Singer's movie was confusingly retro but at the same time it was full of cell phones and modern touches. If you'r going to be modern in Metropolis then look to the FUTURE, not the past, for inspiration. Superman is the Man of Tomorrow, not the man of 1978.
-
Bale was not 36 when they cast him to play Batman in the first movie of this trilogy. That movie came out in 2005. Bale was 31, eight years younger than Hamm is *now*, let alone when filming starts. Your argument actually helped me to prove my point.
-
A few things. First, the Eastwood character's name is "Joe Monco", so his name in the first and second installment is the same. Second, "Blondie" is obviously a nickname, similar to "Angel Eyes". I don't think anyone seriously thought his *name* was Blondie, as in Blondie J. O'Malley or something. Third, Leone, and numerous people involved in the production of those films came to refer to that series as the "Dollars Trilogy". Finally, A FISTFUL OF DYNAMITE has as much to do with the Dollars Trilogy as ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST, which is absolutely nothing.
-
How can you seriously suggest that a film titled "For a Few Dollars MORE" is *not* meant to be viewed as a sequel to a movie called "A Fistful of Dollars"?
-
...you won't like the new Superman movie unless they cast it the way you want. Which means that you won't like the new Superman movie. Sucks for you.
-
just to add my two cents, Bale can be older because Batman's, you know, wearing a freakin' mask!
-
Also, defending this fantasy casting by saying it is an internet meme doesn't really do it any favors. The internet is not exactly filled with reasonable, rational individuals. Most of it is total fucking insanity.
-
I didn't think so. Hell, Bale managed to play a 20 something Bruce and a 30 something Batman IN THE SAME MOVIE and nobody batted an eyelash. But Hamm, who is a MUCH better actor than Bale, is too old? Makes no sense. They've already said that it's not going to be an origin story, so a 30 something Supes makes sense. Further, Hamm looks younger than 38; I'd call him early 30s. Finally, in this magical place called Hollywood, you will often find actors playing characters younger than they are (like Bale in Batman playing a 20 something Bruce and a 30 something Batman), in some cases, MUCH younger (30 year olds playing teenagers and the like).Ergo, the argument against Hamm being too old makes NO SENSE AT ALL. And, as Nolan says, they want to emphasize quality acting, so Hamm is the guy. (The whole "build" argument also makes no sense. He could easily bulk up (although I don't really think he needs to), and, I'm sorry, Reeves had about the same build as Hamm, and Routh looked to be about 50 pounds lighter, so, the "build" argument also makes NO SENSE.)
-
...going into the 3rd film of the new Superman franchise, I would be fine with that. But the fact is, at this rate, he will probably be 47-49 by the time a third film rolls around, assuming the franchise makes it that far. And that is too old.

I'm curious how you came to that conclusion. I'll be disappointed if they don't, but if they get someone else good, it won't matter. But if they cast Welling? EPIC FAIL as SMALLVILLE is TERRIBLE.

Peter Dinklage for Superman: heres why
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
He is better looking that Jon Hamm. he is charismatic. Chicks dig the lil guy. Superman is an alien - so what would be more alien than having a super powered dwarf who can kick unholy ass? I say again, superman is an alien, so why does he need to be 6'4? Why not 3'8" ? Peter Dinklage IS superman! case closed.
-
Why not? He might be 49 at the hypotethical time, but that doesn't mean he'll look 49. You're aware of how actors often portray characters who are much younger than them, right? He's 39 now and doesn't look a day over 32, 33 (imho), so if he looks 39 by time he's 49 in this hypothetical Supes 3, would that be bad? And if so, why?

Steve Buscemi for Batman: heres why
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
Batman is a fuckin psycho. Who can play fickin psychos better than Stevie? No one. Don't give me the 'he's not big enough' garbage. Put him in a padded rubber suit!
-
First of all, Reeve was MUCH more muscular in the first Superman than Hamm is. It was hard to tell in the costume how big he was, because the spandex gives an overall smooth appearance since it sits on the highest points of flesh and not the lowest (i.e. the recessed spaces "in between" muscles that are visible when someone has a low body fat percentage, which is what makes a lean person with the same muscle mass look more muscular than someone with more bodyfat), but there are behind the scenes photos of him while he was in training wearing a tank top, and the dude was *big*. As for Routh looking 50 lbs. lighter...you don't work out, do you? 50 lbs. is the difference between Brock Lesnar and Anderson Silva. Google those two and then tell me that there was a 50 lb. difference between Routh and Reeve. Third, I do work out, and trust me when I tell you that at 32, I have to work out a lot harder than I did at 22 to maintain the same level of hypertrophy. And I have been working out for years, so my muscles are used to that type of stimulus and it is *easier* for me to put on muscle mass than it would be for a 32 year old man who had never been as muscular. I cannot even imagine how much harder it would be for a 39-41 year old who was *never* that big to begin with to try and transform his body in six months for a role in a film like that. Hamm is fit, but I certainly wouldn't call him "muscular" or "big". Superman is both. He doesn't have to be built like The Rock, but he should look formidable in that costume. And, yes, Routh did not look big enough. But he needed about 12 lbs. of weight on him, not 50.

Fair enough. But where did I say that Welling should be the guy? All I said was that Hamm will be too old and would have a lot of trouble bulking up for it. Yes, I am well aware that people in their late twenties play high schoolers. I know how that works. But people in their late twenties don't have wrinkles, etc. People in their late thirties and early forties do. And, man, if you think Hamm looks 32, you would think I look 25, which would make you my new best friend, because I know I feel old...

by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
Is the obvious choice! he does not need to be big - just alien!
-
...is that you seem to be basing it on Hamm's acting ability and not his look. Which is fine, theoretically, since he is a very good actor. But I would suggest that you could find another, younger actor who is every bit as talented AND is more age-appropriate and has the build for it (or has the potential to achieve that build with relative ease). I agree that Hamm has the look for Superman from the neck up, although I think he is too old to play the character now. A few years ago he might have been great. But if what you are saying is that no one would *play* the role better, well...what are you basing that on? Hamm might be one of the better actors on television, but I wouldn't go so far as to call him one of the most talented actors out there. Not yet.

Who is the better actor? Jon Hamm or Peter Dinklage?
by hey_kobe_tell_me_how_my_ass_tastes
Dinklage's sweat can act better than Hamm. I have already given scientifically irrefutable proof that muscles do not matter with regards to kryptonians strength because they get their strength from the yellow sun! So why would anyone be opposed to Peter Dinklage? There is no reason.
-
...like Clark Kent. They are polar opposites. So please don't tell me that his role on MAD MEN proves he is *the* guy. Sure, both Kent and Draper have secrets, but that's as far as it goes. Although I love the character of Draper, he does a lot of things that Kent would never even consider, let alone do. Draper's morals are questionable at best, although he does obviously have lines he won't cross. I just want to keep it spoiler free here because I think everybody should be watching MAD MEN. But you know what I am talking about.

..we can pick this up later...

In the context of Batman movies, yes, I'd say it was pretty god damn horrible. They try too hard to make it realistic, in turn castrating the balls this movie no doubt could've had. For example, the fighting. I recall Batmans style of taking out criminals was a lot sneakier than portrayed in this movie, in the shows, Burton films, and comics. Criminals would hear a noise. "Whats that?!" Look around, creeped out, but still pushing forward nonetheless. Then all of the sudden, one of them would be knocked out cold, and you'd actually SEE it happen. You'd see Batman swing by on a rope, kick the guy in a face, then recede into darkness. No shaking camera, no quick cuts to avoid a lack of choreography. Which brings me to my next point: if you wanna give Batman a more 'realistic' fighting style, film it right. The fight scenes in TDK are filmed close up, the camera shakes, its in barely illuminated areas....in other words, it seems like Nolan intentionally made the action hard to decipher. Why would that be? We sit through painstaking amounts of poorly written dialogue, only to be subjected to poorly filmed and choreographed fight scenes? They FINALLY show some action, and what do we get? We get fucked. We can't even make out whats going on in the 3 minutes of actual fighting shown in this 4 1/2 hour snoozefest. Too often I see people claiming this movie is "realistic," when the term could easily be substituted for "boring" and "generic." What happened to Gotham? When did Gotham lose its character? Oh, I forgot, they don't make sets for movies anymore, that'd be too time-consuming and unrealistic, lets just set the movie in Chicago. Not to mention plotholes. You see Batman save Rachel at that dinner party, but then you never know how Harvey Dent gets out alive, how the Joker evades being captured...it was lazy. They threw too much stuff in this movie, it was like throwing shit at wall and seeing what sticks. What about the cell phones at the end? That was fucking stupid. Batman is such a pussy in this. Heath Ledgers Joker is overrated. Sure, he died, that doesn't mean he automatically did a better job than Jack Nicholson. And Two Face...they show so much of god damn Harvey Dent in the movie, you're sick of him by the time he makes the switch. And then they kill him off after 5 minutes of wreaking havoc. The whole movie was building up, building up...to nothing. There are elements I liked, sure. But I ain't delusional enough to think this movie is better than the Godfather (or worse than Fantastic Four). Like I said before, this was your standard, boring crime drama with popular and well-known characters thrown in. The whole thing seemed sloppy, overproduced, and uninspired. They were trying too hard. Kinda like me trying to hard to defend my opinion that the Dark Knight sucked. And yes, I actually do believe TDK was a horrible movie. Just because it had a big budget doesn't mean it was a sloppily written and directed film. The ONLY redeeming quality is the performances of Heath and Aaron. (Yea, I liked Heaths Joker. Still doesn't mean I'm gonna overrate the performance like everyone else seems to)

to this news. I hate getting cum in my keyboard
-
I have to run, but I'll be back with a more thorough response to many of your points (some of which I do think are extremely valid). I will say that I think the following statement--
"I recall Batmans style of taking out criminals was a lot sneakier than portrayed in this movie, in the shows, Burton films, and comics. Criminals would hear a noise."
--is just flat *wrong*. The Burton films featured much more straightforward martial arts fighting than the Nolan films...in the first Batman he "dances around" with guys in the alley, including one armed with swords, before being knocked out, AND has a prolonged fight with one of the Joker's goons at the top of the cathedral. And maybe he was stealthier in BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, which was awesome all around, but you say "shows", so I hope you are not referring to the 60s Batman or SUPER FRIENDS, because that is just absurd. In BATMAN BEGINS, the way he dispatches the Scarecrow's goons in Arkham Asylum is *precisely* the kind of stealthy, in-and-out-of-the-shadows fighting that you seem to want. Same goes for the sequence in TDK when he goes to Hong Kong and storms that high-rise. -
I recently read a book about Marvel and its reflection of politics in the Cold War Era and beyond. Sure enough, the story of various characters changed over time.
Likewise, there are various perspectives of Batman. For me this the appeal of the character- like James Bond, he can reflect society without losing the corner charactersitics. -

1.)Begins and TDK are great Batman movies. That shouldn't be up for argument.
2.)Part 3 would have Talia al Guhl, the return of Ra's and the Riddler if I had my way.
3.)Besides LOTR and Bourne, another trilogy that ended with part 3 being the best was the StarWars prequels. Say what you want about them, but Revenge of the Sith ended the archs, finished the threads, and was better than the 2 films that came before it. Also, it nicely tied things up in a bow on the twin suns of Tatooine to lead us into another trilogy. (i'll probably get crap for that, but I don't care. SW rocks) -
That was one of the mistakes that SR made: assuming that everyone knew the backstory and didn't care. In fact, it had been 20 years since a Superman film and the audience I watched it with, which were mostly teenagers and some parents with their kids, had NO IDEA WHO SUPERMAN WAS! They didn't know he was from another planet, didn't know he grew up in Kansas, didn't understand his powers, etc. Even with Lois' brief recap of who and what Superman was during the film, they were still lost.
I think the best thing that Nolan and Co. could do would be to go back to square one, like they did in Batman Begins. Embrace the iconic origin that a lot of people know and love. Then go forward with it, saving Lex Luthor for a future film.
Have any details been leaked on the direction that Nolan wants to go in with Superman besides not wanting to do an origin movie? -

I've long said that Holly Marie Combs would be a good Lois Lane
by royston lodge
For some reason, this idea has never taken off and "gone viral".
-
The title misled me into thinking Nolan had truly upped the ante with this series. Bring on a Nolan-directed Dark Knight versus Man of Steel.
-
At least in the minds of many moviegoers. Unfortunately. I kind of like the SAW series as a guilty almost-pleasure, but its villain really carved THE niche as a convincing mastermind who unloads de facto riddles on his victims. I could see a Nolan Riddler doing similar work and getting compared to Jigsaw. Unfortunately.
-
i dont understand...he was even in 10 Things I hate about you - what he play his twin or something?
anyway have the joker in Batman 3 but use footage of ledger (im sure there must be some stuff they cut out) -
But I think it would depend on what Nolan would want, now not just with Batman but with Superman as well. We don't know what his plans are for Superman, whether he will stick around for a trilogy etc. And then there is a question of when he leaves what happens to Batman and Superman, new directors, reboots (I don't see why we would continually need new origin stories with new teams taking over.) So yeah, it might take a while, or any form of teamup could establish its own rules, its own "internal logic" within the context of its own movie. I don't see it as the end of that possibility.
-
THE BATMAN
That is all. -
I think the perfect choice for The Riddler has got to be Stephen Colbert.
-
A teamup movie has to cater to the continuity of the solo movies before it. Not vice versa. The solo movies don't need to be shoehorned into fitting a teamup movie. Like that time in the comics Superman turned blue. Suddenly in JLA, he was blue.
-
There's a movie for her.
-
Not a bad idea, but she's way too young to play someone so powerful...Mo'Nique would be a better choice.
-
Yes, I've heard Mo'Nique, Gabourey, and Oprah (hmm I sense a trend here). I brought up Sidibe because of an old thread (someone suggested her to play Doomsday) and because everyone is helping Precious find work now after Howard Stern's mean comments.
-
how many want to take odds that she runs a yoga studio or some shit?

Look, friend, you can offer up any number of rationales and arguments, backed up by any number of doctorates or MFAs in Film and/or Screenwriting (coughcough) and these people will continue to berate you, call you names, and shake their heads in "pity" (and FUCK YOU times a thousand to those people). To the vast majority of AICN talkbackers, film critics, and money-paying John/Jane Does, TDK was a great film. You and I may know in our heart of hearts (and brain of brains, more importantly) that there are more holes in the plot than swiss cheese and more pretention than a squadron of Lars von Triers lead by General Michael Haneke (a truly terrifying thought), but we're outnumbered eleventybillion to one.
-
what is the premise of this movie? i can't seem to find it in this thread. thanks.
-
Are you still bleating away making lots of noise with no substance?
-
"backed up by any number of doctorates or MFAs in Film and/or Screenwriting (coughcough)"
Little pretentious? I happen to have a film degree myself (coughcough), and as that is the case, I know full well, as you do too, that film is art, even when it panders to the broadest and sometimes lowest denominator, and art is *subjective*. If all those people "think" TDK was a great film, that's because to them it *was*. You might disagree, but who are you to tell us they (we) are wrong? Where are the rules of what a "great" film is written, anyway? Show me the film students' textbook, written by a highly educated luminary such as yourself, that qualifies "greatness" as a property.
TDK is certainly flawed, but who are you to say that someone is wrong if they found it to be entertaining, if it struck some sort of chord with them, and if they are happy with it as--if not the ultimate Batman film--then certainly close to the best we can reasonably hope for from a big budget Hollywood event movie?
But, hey, maybe you're right. I am sure that someone with such a distinguished academic career could probably do better. You should march into the WB offices and slap your degree and your transcripts onto the desks of the top execs. After they are done shitting their pants at the sheer gravitas of those documents, you will no doubt be signed to a multi-picture deal posthaste. -

Cosmo: Draper Is Nothing Like Kent, True, But Dick Whitman Is
by laserpants
The whole Don Draper / Dick Whitman thing is kindof a real world inversion/mutation of the Kal El / Clark Kent thing isn't it? At least it seems that way to me.
I get your reasoning on why you don't think Hamm is the best choice, but nothing will stop me from wishing and hoping that it does happen. Further, I still think he's perfect. He's got the look, the acting chops, and the charm. Maybe he is too old, but I don't think so. Either way, Cosmo, do you have any other suggestions for casting? I honestly can't think of anyone else, but I'm open to whomever they get as long as he can act and looks the part. I'm not too concerned about the muscle mass (I don't do weight training, I exercise to keep in shape, tall n' thin, but I'm not really interested in bulking up), so it doesn't matter to me if the guy looks like a body builder or not. I reckon a dude with the same body type as Bale would be fine. -
I have a strange feeling the role is going to go to Tom Hardy. He is in INCEPTION, so if Nolan got along well with him on that production, I am sure he will keep him in mind for casting in future projects. And Hardy is a very good actor who I think could pull the look off extremely well, including the build. Have you seen BRONSON? He is built exactly like Alex Ross' Superman in that movie: barrel-chested with thick shoulders and upper arms, but not huge and muscle-bound like a contemporary pro-bodybuilder. As and actor, he is VERY intense, and his dedication to the parts he plays is refreshing and exciting. I think he would plunge headlong into embracing a part like that, and could pull it off nicely. He might seem like kind of a random choice, but like I said, he is in INCEPTION, and Nolan likes to use the same actors over and over again...I have a feeling he will pop up in another Nolan film for sure...but which one is the real question.
-
but as a movie,it has a lot of flaws.IMHO its biggest flaw is its length. It could have said the same things in a lot less time, thus becoming less bloated and more solid. It would have also avoided a lot of things that didnt make sense and instead focus on things that needed a bit of more development.
For instance you have Joker, who suddenly,in one scene only,he decides that he is bored with the Mafia's plans and wants something a bit more chaotic.
p>Ok Nolan this is in his character,he is crazy, but as a viewer i need a bit more development on this,on how his mind went from chasing batman into becoming a force of chaos whose ultimate goal is to challenge Batman's morality and code of ethics.
Have him a scene talking to his goons or rather to himself, how he thinks of Gotham City and its people, philosophizing it and then deciding it,in a moment of pure craziness, that he is the true savior of GC and wants to save her by the means of chaos.or some shit like this.(Remember when Batman asked Joker what was the whole meaning of his experiment with the ships? really what was the point? Joker could have said to him,in a serious way, that he wanted to save GC by making her look into her true, ugly self,or something like that)
anyway mark my words.IF Nolan falls in the same trap like Raimi did with SM3,and use the same formula but in a more excessive degree, make a new cop drama story but bigger and louder, then you can bet that Batman3 is going to have the fate of SM3.It will big BO success but a very mediocre movie.
And the same applies with the Superman reboot, when you hear that he intends to have his brother direct the movie, then that sounds like an ominous thing for the future of this movie. -
I used the word "eleventybillion". I called up the image of an army of Lars Von Triers. Wasn't that enough to tell you that even though I'm firm in my conviction that TDK is deeply flawed, I'm not trying to call anyone lesser because of their opinion? And that I'm having a laugh at the fact that no matter what I think, my opinion doesn't particularly hold much weight around here? As well, I never used the word "wrong" in that post, did I? I *may* have used it in past posts to make a hyperbolic point, but I certainly didn't use it here. An opinion can't be "wrong", but it *can* be well-supported or poorly-supported. Calling up the degree was an expression of my bemusement that regardless of how well-supported my arguments always were (and how often the opposing arguments weren't), I would get shouted down by the vast majority of talkbackers. Who, I'm guessing (and maybe this makes me pretentious or elitist) don't hold degrees in Film, particularly in Screenwriting, which is the aspect of the movie that I most frequently criticized. Why would I approach Warners with my degree? Obviously since they made a shit-ton of money, there's no reason for them to listen to me. This is the type of "nana nana boo boo" statement that makes no sense. Warner Brothers are in the business to make money. TDK made them money. It doesn't matter how much I can support my argument that TDK is flawed, the vast majority of the movie-going public either disagrees or doesn't care. I'm not under any delusion that they do.
-
There is nothing more obnoxious than a fucking thousand nerds with nothing to back up their bullshit shoutdowns except subjectivist rhetoric and vitriol.
-
Guys you cant write off the previous Batmans.
