The @$$Holes pick their @$$ies for the best in comics for 2009 as AICN COMICS PRESENTS THE SIXTH ANNUAL @$$IE AWARDS: DAY ONE!!!
Welcome to AICN COMICS: SIXTH ANNUAL @$$IE AWARDS, where your favorite @$$Holes pick the best in comics! I’m Ambush Bug. We’re doing this year’s @$$ie Awards a little differently. Much like our highly successful Best of the Decade Lists from last month, instead of having the entire awards show happen in one day in one bulky column, we’re prolonging the magic and spreading the @$$y goodness over a three day span for much easier consumption. As always, the @$$Holes can’t agree about anything, so each reviewer picked their own @$$ie winner for each category. So enjoy this, the first portion of our awards ceremony and join us all week to find out who will win the coveted @$$ie Award!
And the categories are…

what a narrow view of the last year's releases
-
Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....
-
either the @$$ies have no taste, or this is really the best comics have to offer these days... soulcrushingly dissappointing,
-
Awards Shows never get no respect. No respect. boo boo boo
-
I've realized every other answer is wrong, so I'd like to change my answer marked "Best Cover Art" to HOUSE OF MYSTERY.
-
Weird thing this weekend at STAPLE! I overheard 2 guys talking and one started mentioning this friend of his..Vroom Socko. I knew he was lying because...you have no friends. Right?
-
...not the interior artists.

...not the interior artists.

But, Mynamesdan, if that is your name, could you try to make your criticism just a little more founded? Or, alternatively, more unspecific, since then it would be harder to refute straight off? A narrow view of comics? The @$$ies are many things, but even from this sampling, narrow isn't one of them. You've got indie comics, web comics, big two superhero comics, Image, Dark Horse, original graphic novels, a wide variety of genres, works from established masters like Alan Moore, R. Crumb and David Mazzucchelli down to self-published books. All this and we also pick out some of the worst and most sarcasm-worthy comics for attack. Hell, we're not even limited to last year - Optimous Douche picked FINAL CRISIS for best cover art. The first post had to be claimed, granted, but I think you'd struggle to find a *less* narrow best of list on the webs.
-
So much for me feeling superior.
-
...is that it actually took first poster 3 tries to get that one right. LOL
-
Glad to see You Have Killed Me here. I read their last story 12 Reasons Why I Love Her which was fantastic. I didn't even know about this story until I was at my LCS and they had it on the 60% off counter. SCORE! Good read with great art (what grabbed me the first time I saw 12 Reasons) <br> Nice list, overall. It does feel a little lat though. We are almost 1/4 of the way through 2010...
-
I just want the @$$holes to know that their work is not totally unappreciated! That Iron Man Marvel Zombies cover is glorious! Look forward to the rest of the awards!
-
...to not one, but two of you singling out X-Factor #39 for being memorable. It's much appreciated.
-
We've run our awards closer to the Oscars (which we base it on), rather than be lost in the shuffle of all of the other best of lists that happen around the beginning of the year.<br><br> And how cool is it that Sir Peter David showed up to give thanks for his award. Your @$$ie is in the mail, sir.
-
Excellent choice, by the way!
-
Norman Osborn - Sort of like what if the Joker was really Luthor.
-
...and only slightly used. Please disinfect before handling.
-
Even though FINAL CRISIS STARTED raping our souls in 08 -- it didn't shoot its final icky wad until on our collective backs until March 09<p> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Crisis
-
It was the Elseworlds book from the '90s where Superman's ship crashes on stately Wayne Manor.<p>Dark Reign does it better, frankly.
-
And pretentious.
-
How so? Each reviewer brings to it their own individual tastes and preferences. It is only as "narrow" and "pretentious" as it is just not lining up with someone else's choices I think.
-
To my penis — and it is narrow and pretentious.<p> I beat it into submission as often as I can, but the little bastard keeps rearing it's ugly head.
-
so what you're saying is that your penis requires someone's hand up your @$$ to get it working?
-
And how badly do I need a life that I even care?
-
Barely took any time to read through this. So maybe it could have been a bit more substantial. <p> While I agree that the reveal of Madrox's baby was shocking, I must say that the ONLY reason I still buy that book is the gay subplot. Also, my straight friends make fun of that book in particular, because it has gotten pretty crappy. Sorry Peter David. <p> The cover selections were good. I liked Realm of Kings but don't really remember it that much. <p> I can't believe Legion of Three Worlds won anything. Talk about fluff. If every any book needed an edgy writer/artist, it's the LEgion...which continually gets very traditional types of both artist and writer. Years ago, Abnett/Lanning/Coipel all made their names on this book, and it was good. Good characters, edgy storylines. Legion of Three Worlds seemed to reinforce the stale, stale, opposite-of-futuristic (unless the future is ruled by white kids) Legion of which I am so very sick. <p> thanks for not awarding Osborne or the "Dark" books anything, though. Osborne's comeppance cannot come soon enough.

You broke me of you, JMS. You broke me of you
-
Optimus is riht, as little wow as there was inside the cover, J.G. Jones almost the exact opposite amount on the covers. Great work.
-
FUCK JMS doing Superman and Wonder Woman. That dude need to finish the last half of The Twelve first. What the hell happened to The Blue Blade??? I would give away most of the Marvel comics I bought last year just to get a paperback collecting that full story.
-
Even if he finishes it, which he won't, I will never buy it. Never.<br><br><br><br>I did, however, buy the first trade of Chew and X-factor. I'm looking forward to both. Also, I finally watched Crisis on 2 Earths and I love how Ultraman is all super guido. He's like an extra from Jersey Shore.
-
will happen tomorrow...on @$$ie Day 2! @$$ie Day 3 on Thursday!
-
If you thought that MODOK was wrong you should read the MODOK strip from the very next issue written and drawn by Jhonen Vasquez. That was insane. Awesome, but insane.
-
Just like they probably won't finish Infinite Horizon or War Heroes. All three were pretty good, but I guess there just wasn't much else to do with the gimmicky concepts.<p>That said, if I don't get another issue of Bad Dog soon, that will make ANOTHER cool series that got cancelled, which would be a shame since I liked that even more than The Twelve.
-
Holding out for a trade that is NOT 30 bucks. Wasn't that just two issues?
-
...but since I provided so many examples of why our selection of comics was not in fact narrow, but broad, how about you give an explanation or two?
-
it looks like Power Girl is trying to distract some photographers from the building on fire behind her, by getting her tits out. And wehat's with that stupid expression on her face. I like good girl art as much as the next man but why draw her with a face like that?
-
This Year. Which is still WAY the fuck quicker than the final issue of Planetary took so quite your whining bitches.
-
"quit your whining"
-
..is perfection
-
is indeed perfection.

I'd say you guys jumped the gun with the Deadpool Overexposure
by Series7
Award, that'll be this year. You forget about the first half of the year leading up to the Wolverine movie where there was a one shot with him coming out every week, and he or his son have had at least 2 if not more lines going all year. Sure the Deadpool train has kicked into high gear, but this year will be a lot worse then last year.
-
The Twelve was the last one. JMS has done this to me before and now... now he's on the list right next to Liefeld and Loeb and Winnick... and Rick Leonardi...
-
Side story is seems this week.
-
The Twelve's suspension in limbo broke me of JMS, as well. <p> Sadly disappointed in the Crisis on 2 Earths DVD. It was boring. And after Wonder Woman was so awesome. I loved the Aquaman live-action pilot, though. Also, did enjoy Jersey Shore Ultraman.
-
Here's what bothered me the most about the thing... At no point do any of the characters acknowledge the fact that they are fighting evil versions of themselves... At the very least, you'd think it would be a tactical onsideration... Did they just not notice?
-
They're great! Fast and hard boiled without posturing because Parker never postures. He just is. Like the bad don't have to tell you how bad they are! Often clever and unpredictable. Oddly, Parker may have lost me a screenwriting job once. I was pitching a crime script to this producer in the immediate post RESERVOIR DOGS era, and it involved this guy trying to recover dirty money (as Parker often must) and the producer said, "See, yer all about money. Yer characters are all about money!" I said, "Yer a fucking movie producer and yer tellin' me I'm all about money?" Okay, so maybe it wasn't Parker but the damned Oppositional Defiance Disorder, or perhaps those six shots of tequila but my point is still valid.
